'Skirts were strange.' Cara thought to herself, pulling the long skirt on over her jeans and sneakers. She had a feeling that (as it usual was with the Doctor) that she could or would be running.
Might as well be prepared.
"Cara." The Doctor said suddenly opening the door, closing it behind him. "What's wrong?" he said instantly, folding his arms, looking down at her.
"Do you know how to knock?" Cara replied, copying his stance. Hoping she might divert his attention away from that to her snark.
"Cara." The Doctor said warningly. "Nothing! Doctor, for the last time, I am fin—Ah!" Cara lied, a sharp pain suddenly shooting though her. The Doctor flying to her, shaking his head. "No, you not."
"There's this…feeling…" Cara started sitting on the bed; the Doctor next to her. "This bad, awful feeling—"
"Like someone emptied a can of worms, cold water down your bad, the twisting in your gut like there's a snake whined around it…" the Doctor listed, seeming to know exactly what is was.
Cara nodded. "Yeah."
"Time sense." The Doctor said, glancing at her, seeing her confused face. "It's basically like an instinct, how we as Timelord's know what fixed points are, or vulnerable points in time that can be changed, or what wouldn't impact time as much…Time Tots are usual much more sensitive to it." he explained. "Must be why it's affecting you so badly."
"I felt it; at the hospital…but not like this. Doc, I think something bad is going to happen...Really bad." Cara whispered, glancing up at him. "Can't you feel it?"
The Doctor paused, running his hand though his hair. "Lightly, but if you're feeling it as deeply as you are, you're definitely more Time Sensitive." he sighed nodding his head, seeming to formulate a plan.
"Alright, I'll try and block some of it out, help you along…Little bit of influence on your emotional and mental state should do it…" the Doctor mused to himself.
Cara shooting him a look. "Infu-Emoti-What?-"
"I'm really out of practice, should have sensed the discomfort." The Doctor said mumbling something in a different language; irritably at himself. "Really have to think about this—
"Wait, Doc-" Cara started, just as a loud bell rang out. "Oh, Supper time…" the Doctor said, looking up. "Probably going to need it. Mental and emotional transference and manipulate without practice. Errgh…" the Doctor said, making a face.
Cara stared back blankly, sighing to herself. "When this is over, you really need to give me a crash course on this stuff."
"Your companion begs an apology, Doctor. Her clothing has somewhat delayed her." The slightly creepy servant said; after they had finished some of there food.
"Oh, that's all right." The Doctor said, licking his finger. His Scottish accent returning. "Save her a wee bit of ham."
"The feral child could probably eat it raw." The Queen said smartly. Captain Reynolds laughing loudly (a lot more than was needed for that comment). Cara stared at him weirdly; she and the Doctor sharing amused looks.
"Very wise, Ma'am! Very witty!"
"Slightly witty, perhaps. I know you rarely get the chance to dine with me, Captain, but don't get too excited...I shall contain my wit in case I do you further injury." Queen Victoria said, sharply. The Captain slowly deflating like a lead balloon. "Yes, Ma'am. Sorry, Ma'am."
"Besides, we're all waiting on Sir Robert! Come, Sir! You promised us a tale of nightmares." The Doctor said, shooting Cara a cheeky grin.
"Indeed. Since my husband's death, I find myself with more of a taste for supernatural fiction."
"You really miss him." Cara said softly. The Queen instantly turning to her. "Very much." she said, seeming to be lost in her thoughts.
A sudden deep sadness running though Cara. One that she knew was not her own.
"Oh, completely. And that's the charm of a ghost story, isn't it? Not the scares and chills, that's just for children, but the...hope of some contact with the great beyond." she said, the Doctor watching her, a strange look on his face again.
Much like the one at the hospital. When Novice Hame called him the 'lonely God'. She still didn't understand and the Doctor seemed to avoid telling her.
Except this time she knew why.
He didn't want to make her sad.
"We all want some message from that place...it's the Creator's greatest mystery that we are allowed no such consolation. The dead stay silent. And we must wait." The Queen finished.
Cara slowly sliding her hand in the Doctor's, squeezing it tightly.
Queen Victoria shook herself out, as if trying to get rid of her sadness. It diminished, but didn't disappear.
'Are you okay?' Cara thought, glancing at the Doctor his face pained and solemn. 'Yes, of course.'
Cara raised an eyebrow. 'You not getting out of it that easily.' she thought relaying his own words to her. The Doctor's lips twitched. 'Cheeky.'
"Come! Begin your tale, Sir Robert. There's a chill in the air. The wind is howling through the eaves. Tell us of monsters!"
"The story goes back three hundred years. Every full moon, the howling rings through the valley. The next morning, livestock is found ripped apart and...devoured." Sir Robert said, quietly. His voice mysterious and a little fearful.
Cara spotting some of the servants whispering to each other in the back.
"Tales like this just disguise the work of thieves. Steal a sheep and blame a wolf, simple as that." Captain Reynolds said confidently.
Cara suddenly had an urge to move. Something was calling her. She glancing to the Doctor; she could feel him in her head, but of some reason he didn't seem to sense this.
She couldn't quite reach him too. Like there was a rushing train between them. Stopping then continuing. On and Off.
"But sometimes a child goes missing. Once in a generation. A boy will vanish from his homestead." Sir Robert said gravelly.
'I'm going to go check on Rose.' Cara thought when she could feel the bond strengthen.
The Doctor nodded, glancing at her. 'Be careful, there's a low level telepathic field. I can feel you-but you might not always feel me…..Come right back.'
Cara nodded, discreetly sliding out of her seat, disappearing down the hall.
Cara walked down the halls, dodging the guards and servant people as much as she could. Eventually she found her way to a locked brown door.
Cara smirked, pulling out a hair pin in her jeans pocket. 'Who's says you need a sonic screwdriver.' she thought, bending down, proceeding to pick the lock.
"Are there descriptions of the creature?"
"Oh yes, Doctor. Drawings and woodcarvings. And it's not merely a wolf. It's more than that. This is a man who becomes an animal."
"A werewolf?"
Pushing open the door, Cara walked in staring at the man in the cage. "Cara?"
"Rose?" Cara said surprised, turning around staring at her. She, and what seemed to be most of Sir Roberts household were locked and chained to the wall. The man in the cage growling and hissing under his breath.
"How you down here? How'd you find us? Where's the Doctor?" Rose asked instantly, hardly giving Cara time to breath.
"Up-Upstairs. What's going on—" Cara started, bending down facing the man in the cage.
"Don't child!" a well-dressed woman said sharply. "He will kill you." she whispered fearfully.
"But's he's—"
The man jumped violently against the cage, making them all flinch. His eyes were completely black, looking like someone poured liquid into them.
Cara took a step back, her heart hearts hammering in her chest. "You! The child of a million galaxies and the burning planet." The man hissed, his voice thick with pure hatred.
"The one that billions died for, just for one to live…The wolf...the wolves...the creator and destroyer…the child of stars…" The man said, gazing up at her, laughing.
A laugh that sent chills down her spine. Cold, distant, evil. "Who are you?" Cara whispered, staring at him. It was…angry and hurt…and so deeply sad.
The wolf stared up at her, his pure black eyes shining.
"The wolves send their love…"
"My father didn't treat it as a story. He said it was fact. He even claimed to have communed with the beast, to have learned its purpose. I should've listened. His work was hindered... he made enemies. There's a Monastery in the Glen of Saint Catherine. The Brethren opposed my father's investigations."
"Why are you here? You don't belong here." Cara said, swallowing hard.
"I belong nowhere. Because of you…" the wolf hissed, slamming himself against the cage.
"Perhaps they thought his work ungodly."
"That's what I thought. But now I wonder... what if they had a different reason for wanting the story kept quiet?"
"Don't bother with him!" Rose snapped, all her back burning irritation at Cara unleashing. "Get the Doctor!"
"What do you mean, because of me? I don't know who you are." Cara continued, ignoring Rose. The wolf hissed. "Lies."
"I'm not, I promise." Cara replied, bending down, letting out a string of whimpers from behind her. "Why…why are you doing this, I know you don't want to…"
"You know nothing!"
Cara nodded. "Alright…but that boy and person you're inhabiting; he hasn't done anything wrong."
"Cara!" Rose shouted. "Get the Doctor!"
Cara ignored her, turning her attention to the Wolf. "What about him, hmm? I know you're not heartless. Whoever's making you do this, it's wrong. You have to understand, you can't—"
"CARA!"
"You don't have to do this." Cara finished. The Wolf pressed his head against the bars. "I have…no choice."
"What if they turned from God and worshipped the wolf?"
"And what if they were with us right now?"
Suddenly the doors were thrown open, moonlight flooding inside directly over the Wolf's cage. "Stupid girl." Rose grumbled under her breath.
'Heard that.' Cara thought, stepping back, turning to the prisoners. Following the chains, all she needed was…
Cara smiled, jumping over in the middle of the locked up prisoners. "So brave…" Rose mumbled under her breath. Cara rolled her eyes, finding it safe to say: Rose did not like her.
Picking the lock, Cara glanced over her shoulder, the Wolf, grabbing the bars. The cold wind rushing though the room.
"All of you! Stop looking at it! Flora, don't look. Listen to me. Grab hold of the chain and pull!" Rose ordered, as she began yanking on the chain. "Come on! With me! Pull!"
A satisfying click ran out, Cara disposing of the main lock. Running over to the right she tried that one. Growling sound's emitting from the cage.
"Wonderful, we've got our own personal Remus Lupin." Cara grumbled under her breath, finishing the lock on the right. Jogging around to the final one on her left.
"I said pull! Stop your whining and listen to me! All of you! And that means you, your Ladyship! Now come on, pull!" Rose shouted, all the people pulling on the chain.
They all stand, helping Rose pull on the chain trying to free it from the wall. Cara swallowed hard, as the wolf let out another hiss.
"Child of Stars….you're first…."
"What is the meaning of this?" Queen Victoria cried, standing behind Captain Reynolds, who was pointing a gun and Father Angelo and Sir Robert. The former who was staring out of the window, chanting in Latin. The Doctor shutting his eyes concentrating hard.
The room was in chaos, but he needed to focus he needed to hear her.
Cara was there, but he kept on losing her, like an on and off phone signal. Why, why did he let her out of his site…why did he let her go alone?
It was Parenting Rule 1: Never leave the child alone. Alongside: Never let the child play with low-level radiation blocks until they learn not to put them in their mouths.
Oddly enough, he always used to forget that one.
Her emotions were erratic and strong. Powerful even, as he could feel them beginning to affect him. Every single emotion of hers, running though him like a water.
"Explain yourself, Sir Robert!"
"What's happening..."
She was scared, terrified.
Hurt, worried, afraid…So afraid, so alone...so scared and alone.
"I'm sorry, Your Majesty, they've got my wife." Sir Robert mumbled, snapping the Doctor out of his stupor.
"Cara! Where's Cara!" the Doctor shouted at Father Angelo. "Where's my daughter!? Where is she?!"
The Wolf began to transform. His skin bulging, as he screamed. His bones cracked and broken in unnatural ways. His screams were awful to hear.
But Cara could feel it; pain like she had never experienced before. She wanted to scream, scream and cry. But they were all going to die, all of them.
Unless she picked this lock. It was all well and good, if they broke the chains on the walls. But the lock bound them together.
Unless she and Rose broke them…Well she would be wolf supper, not that Rose wouldn't mind. And no she did not come up with that by herself. Rose's annoyance and anger at her were rather strong.
"Three... Pull!" she shouted, Cara fumbled with the lock.
The transformation was almost completely, she thought. He did look similar to Werewolf-Lupin, but considering she was basing her knowledge about werewolf's on Harry Potter…
"One... two... three... pull!"
Update: The Werewolf was definitely scarier than the one in Harry Potter. Maybe because this one was directly in front of her and attempting to attack all of them.
"One, two, three, pull!"
But maybe it was just a scary werewolf. She didn't really have much information to know which one, she thought, cracking the lock. Just as the chain's snapped.
Brilliant for them.
Bad as well; as the wolf in question had just broken the side bars of his cage.
'Oh shi-'
