Chapter 11
The Last City, Earth
The Crystal Gems were at the tower to tell each other about their experiences. Zavalah, Ikora, and Cayde were in the command room.
"Hey, you're back!" Cayde said gladly as the Crystal Gems walked in. Ratchet, Caleb, and Vera followed them.
"So have you all become true wielders of The Light?" Zavalah asked.
"Yes we have!" Steven said.
"They were awesome" Ratchet said.
"Caleb, Amethyst, and I saved some citizens from the Hive outside the city." Steven said.
"We can call you the Void bois" Cayde said.
Caleb replied "those who have stared into the void are not bound by the laws of space and time"
"Ruby, Eva, and I went to Mercury and fought some Vex" Connie said.
"And while Sapphire became a Stormcaller on Io, Pearl and I were on Mars fighting Cabal" Ratchet said.
"Good work, Guardians" Zavalah said. "And perfect timing because we've already got a mission for you. Get in your ship and head to the Reef. We'll explain on the way"
The Gems got in a ship that could fit all 6 of them and took off.
"Are you all ready for this?" Cayde asked over radio.
"Oh yeah" Ruby said
"So what's the situation?" Pearl asked
Ikora began to explain "You're headed to the Reef. A place full of Fallen, and a race known as the Awoken."
"Isn't Zavalah and Vera an Awoken?" Steven asked
"Yes, they both are." Ikora replied. "The Awoken were once Human. During the collapse, people were trying to escape the doom that came to the system. The Traveler's explosion reached the edges of the asteroid belt, where the colony ships were. When the Light and the Darkness collided, the connections turned the humans into the Awoken. After the collapse, some went back to Earth while others remained in the belt to build the Reef."
"That sounds interesting" Connie said
"The Queen of the Reef is Mara Sov" Ikora said. "Good luck"
"Alright, we're almost there" the Ghost said. Then the ship slowed down out of hyperspace. The area had a purple fog throughout it. As they flew, they saw the remains of a couple ships.
"I've got a bad feeling about this" the Ghost said.
Suddenly two ships came behind the Gems ship. Someone radiod to them
"Stay your course or you will be shot. Now who are you?"
"We're Guardians from the Last City. We're here to see Mara Sov" the Ghost said. "We mean no harm"
There was a moment of silence as the Gems waited for an answer.
"Alright, follow me and you can meet her" one of the ships said. The Gems followed them to a hanger area. When they got out of their ships, they noticed that everyone was Awoken. Blue or purple. One of the pilots came out of her ship.
"Follow me" she said. "I am Petra Venj. So, who sent you here" Petra asked.
"The Vanguard of The Last City sent us" the Ghost answered. The Gems followed Petra until they got to some kind of throne. They saw some pink person sitting on the throne.
"I think that's Mara Sov." The Ghost said to the Gems. Suddenly a blue person came towards them.
"Who have you brought to us?" The blue man asked.
"These are some Guardians from The Last City" the Petra said.
"And what are you doing here?" the blue man asked
The Ghost replied "We were sent here to check up on you... see how the Reef was doing. And hope that we can become allies." Suddenly some Fallen came out from behind the throne.
"Fallen!" The Ghost said. Steven pulled out his gun but as soon as he aimed the blue man grabbed Steven's gun and pointed a knife at him.
"They're not our enemies" the blue man said. "They listen to the Queen, as you should too".
Mara finally spoke "You can let go of him Uldren Sov. They didn't know" .
Uldren was the blue man's name, and he was Mara's younger brother.
"So did Zavalah send you?" Mara asked
"Yes he did" Steven replied.
"That stubborn man, who just sits in a tower all day" Uldren said
"He didn't send us to fight you or cause contention of any kind" the Ghost said. "We just wanted to see if our Guardians would be allowed to pass through here. And we can be allies when something threatens the system."
"Why should we help you? What have you done for us?" Uldren asked
"This will help all of us" the Ghost said
"All that Zavalah wants is power by claiming to be a leader" Uldren said
"Stop it Uldren. Often when we guess at others motives, we reveal only our own" Mara said and had Uldren come to her. Uldren and Mara whispered to each other.
"Yes, good idea." Uldren said to Mara and then walked to the Gems. "We want you to prove that you can help us. Bring us the head of a Vex Gatelord."
"A Vex Gatelord? Those things are huge!" The Ghost said.
"You can find one on Venus" Uldren said.
"That won't be easy" The Ghost said the the Gems.
"So, do we have a deal?" Uldren asked
"Deal" Steven said in a serious tone of voice
As the Gems approached their ships they discussed what they will do.
"I know of a few places where we can find a Vex Gatelord" the Ghost said
Suddenly Petra walked to them. "you can find one near the Black Garden" she said.
"Alright, let's do this! Connie said and they boarded their ship. "thanks Petra!"
The Ghost turned on the ship and said "We're going to Venus" and the ship took off.
"So what's the deal with the Reef" Ruby asked the Ghost.
"The Reef is ruled by the Queen, Mara Sov" the Ghost explained. "Not all Fallen are evil. There were some that helped fight off the Hive when they attacked."
"I thought they came here because of the Traveler" Connie said.
"They did. The Traveler had transformed their home world. They followed it because they wondered why it left them, and because the Hive destroyed their world not much later, so they had nowhere else to go."
"Well at least they survived" Amethyst said
"Only three races have survived a war with the Hive. The Fallen, the Vex, and Humanity." The Ghost said
The Gems began flying to Venus and prepare for the next fight.
