4.2. Battle: Bird

Note: Aside from [Earth Spear], all spells in this chapter are non-canon. Only a few spells per school of magic have been revealed in canon, and the set-up of Heresy Magic suggests that there are ten spells per skill tier, one for each level.

Apex Eagle Lv19 (no name) HP: 500/700

A minute ago, the Apex Eagle Lv19 had gone for a simple beak stab and swallow, having seen an easy meal out of the large, squirming Earth Worm on the ground.

Now it was the one that squirmed on the forest floor. In agony.

Such a large and powerful predator had never, in all its life, thought to fear a such a small, weak worm.

Oh well, I can kill it some other way. The stomach acid isn't in the stomach anymore, and now there are all these holes I can go through.

Eenie meenie miney mo.

Proficiency has reached the required level.
Skill [Enhanced Piercing Lv5] has become [Enhanced Piercing Lv6].

If I eat my surroundings, I can recover stamina as I go, and my health isn't going down anymore because I'm out of the acid.

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 3/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 30/49 – SPL: 25/49)

Munch munch munch.

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 4/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 32/49 – SPL: 25/49)

In fact, I think I'm getting my health back too, not just my stamina.

Proficiency has reached the required level.
Acquired skill [HP Automatic Recovery Lv1].

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 5/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 34/49 – SPL: 25/49)

Yup, definitely getting my health back. The stamina pool isn't going up though... I mean, it's going up, but then it goes right back down again to restore my health and stamina. I guess that's fine. There's a lot of meat here, so I'm sure my SPL will get back eventually.

Proficiency has reached the required level.
Acquired skill [Heat Resistance Lv1].

Gee, it sure is warm in here.

Apex Eagle Lv19 (no name) HP: 475/700

The eagle continued squirming, now in discomfort as well as agony, as the thing squirmed inside its body.

Now if only I could get my MP back automatically.

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 8/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 40/49 – SPL: 25/49)

Munch munch munch.

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 9/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 42/49 – SPL: 25/49)

I wonder if there's anything I can do to get the MP version of the health recovery skill. I know it exists. I saw it on the skill points list.

I'm already at 0 MP, so... do I just... I don't know... think about magic really hard? C'mon, magic. C'mon, magic. C'mon, magic.

Well, there are plenty of other skills I can level. And hey, guess what? My entire surroundings count as food and as an enemy, all in one. Infinite stamina and infinite grinding until this thing dies. This is perfect!

Impact could use some training to catch up, couldn't it? Let's do some damage!

How about destruction? But I need something to wrap my body around to level destruction... how about some of these big bones? But I need to get through the muscle first...

Okay, piercing then destruction it is!

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 45/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 5/49 – SPL: 25/49)

Okay, that's enough physical for now. Even though my SP recovers over time, my skill grinding is outpacing my stamina recovery.

MAN I wish I could switch to magic grinding, but my MP are at 0 and they aren't recovering...

How am I supposed to unlock [MP Automatic Recovery] on my own?

I KNOW it's possible, I already unlocked all the others. I even unlocked [MP Lessened Consumption] already.

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 48/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 15/49 – SPL: 25/49)

In fact, how are MP supposed to recharge normally? I don't think creatures are supposed to rely on level-ups to get them back.

Maybe mana potions... but wild animals can't rely on those, either, if they even exist.

Drinking water for MP instead of eating food for SP? That's how it is in a lot of video games... but I've been drinking plenty of blood, and that isn't working.

In Morrowind, you had to wait or sleep to get magicka back.

So I guess... I could try going to sleep?

This isn't exactly a safe place to sleep.

I could try "waiting" instead, but I don't know how that's supposed to help.

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 48/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 25/49 – SPL: 25/49)

Hold on. How about instead of "waiting", I try "meditating"? That's supposed to be something wizards do in RPGs, right? Or monks, or something like that. It might be dangerous to do it here of all places... but this enemy isn't fighting back like that squirrel did. This animal is a lot bigger on the inside than that squirrel was, so it probably can't find me. If it makes any sudden moves, I'll stop meditating and keep fighting. And it would help if I had my mana if that happens.

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 48/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 35/49 – SPL: 33/49)

Okay, so how does meditation work again? It's NOT the same thing as sleeping or resting, I know that. I... think I remember watching a video about meditating once... yeah, the guy said that meditating isn't something that has to be religious or spiritual. That's why I remember it. It can be purely physical and mental.

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 48/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 45/49 – SPL: 33/49)

He said... the point of meditation... is... to clear your internal thoughts. Right, that was it. Don't let your brain think any words, which is something it's constantly doing on its own. If you stop your own mental chatter, that's supposed to be healthy, somehow. And if your brain tries to think thoughts on its own, which it will, focus on your breathing. Actually, you're supposed to focus on your breathing anyway, I think. Especially if you're just starting out.

(Individual Earth Worm (no name) HP: 48/48 | MP: 0/47 | SP: 49/49 – SPL: 49/49)

Okay, let's try that. Worms actually do breathe, so that's something I can do.

No!

YES! Success!

Take THAT, brain!

And would you look at that?

(MP: 1/47)

My MP are coming back. Excellent.

But...

(MP: 2/47)

...it's taking forever. I guess the skill is only at level 1.

I wonder what I should level now.

Not [Earth Magic], that takes too much mana.

I have my SP back.

How about...

Apex Eagle Lv19 (no name) HP: 350/700

The eagle panted heavily on the ground. The pain had ended some time ago, but not after a good many [Pain Resistance] levels were acquired – enough to reach [Pain Nullity] and acquire [Pain Mitigation Lv1].

Thankfully, the eagle couldn't feel the worm anymore. It must have finally died, but now the eagle needed to recharge its health. It had felt its stomach repairing itself with [HP Automatic Recovery], but it was still bleeding as much as it was healing, which meant it needed to find some food. It was low on stamina, so it would have to stick to magic. Luckily, it knew some wind magic. Now, to find a tar-

Perfect!

My new [Ground Attack] skill works like the opposite of spells – rather than taking one SP and a bunch of mana, it takes one MP and a bunch of stamina. Well, not a bunch. It only took 2 points of stamina to use that ground-enhanced physical attack. Probably because it was only level 1.

Let's fix that.

Oh, and I'll keep my mind as blank as I can while I'm grinding. Maybe that'll get me another level of [MP Automatic Recovery].

Cool!

Man, this meditation thing is just like when I'm in the grinding zone... or maybe it helps me get in the mood for grinding even more. Maybe I should focus on it for a while. It's a skill that doesn't even take any stamina or mana to grind. All it needs is for me to be on low MP.

And would you look at that, my MP is at 0/47 again.

Meditation time, here I come.

Apex Eagle Lv19 (no name) HP: 240/700

The worm wasn't dead. The eagle knew that now. But the worm wasn't attacking anymore, so the eagle didn't know where it was inside its body.

The eagle knew, in order to survive, it would have to kill the worm.

It couldn't rely on automatic recovery.

It needed the source of the pain OUT.

So it readied a [Wind Scythe] spell. The moment the worm moved again, it would cut the parasite straight out of its body.

I wonder what I should grind next-

Apex Eagle Lv19 (no name) HP: 245/700.

There!

[Wind Magic Lv7: Wind Scythe].

HP: 200/700.

The eagle dove into the freshly-cut wound on its body, tearing at flesh as quickly as possible to GET THE WORM OUT.

Wha-?

HP: 165/700.

At last, it managed to grab the worm's tail and yank it free, violently throwing it far away from itself.

Whatever. Not important.

Looks like this thing still wants to fight. Fine, we can fight. I've got a few new spells now that my [Earth Magic] leveled up, so let's try...

Unable to avoid the rapid succession of spells due to its injuries, the eagle's sharp vision narrowed on the worm. It had magic, too.

[Wind Magic Lv7: Wind Scythe].
[Wind Magic Lv5: Wind Blast].

Unfortunately for the eagle, [Earth] naturally resists [Wind]. Actually, [Earth] resists many things, not just [Wind]. Generally speaking, [Earth] is defensive.

[Earth Magic Lv6: Stone Lance]. (MP: 10/47)

Apex Eagle Lv19 (no name) HP: 85/700.

The eagle's keen eyes noted that the scythe had done the most damage to the worm, even as its wing was pierced by a stone lance. It used the rest of its mana on as many scythe spells as it could cast.

More magic, huh? Well, I've got just enough magic left for my newest spell.

[Earth Magic Lv7: Stone Scythe]. (MP: 1/47).

Apex Eagle Lv19 (no name) HP: 65/700.

The eagle's other wing was lanced.

Now out of mana, and out of all other options, it charged.

[Motion Perception] is telling me that the enemy is charging... but I can't get out of the way! I might not be able to survive another physical attack. I needed to avoid this guy, but I've got no speed. How does this world expect worms to be able to get that [Evasion] skill naturally if we can barely move? [Pebblekinesis] is faster than me, for Pete's sake.

Wait, that's it!

[Ground Magic Lv3: Pebblekinesis]. (MP: 0/47).

Proficiency has reached the required level.
Acquired skill [Evasion Lv1].

Ah, [Pebblekinesis]. Is there anything you can't do?

Apex Eagle Lv19 (no name) HP: 65/700.

The eagle's keen eyes were fast enough to track the fact that the worm floated upwards on a pebble, avoiding the beak jab at the very last second, but the eagle's body wasn't fast enough to respond in time. It was low on stamina by this point, and its reaction time was sluggish.

So sluggish, in fact, that it couldn't get out of the way as the pebble stopped floating and dropped the worm right on its back.

Stamina pool recovered. Condition satisfied.
Individual Earth Worm can now evolve.

Ah, perfect. Time to get stronger.

There are multiple options for evolution.
Please choose from one of the following.
Greater Earth Worm.
Earth Lizard.

Hold on.

Wait a minute.

"Lizard"?

As in, I'll get eyes? I'll actually be able see things again?

Oh, I am so choosing that one.

Earth Lizard selected. Please choose sub-race.
Chameleon.
Tegu.
Monitor.

Wait, I didn't mean right away-

Whatever. So long as it doesn't start evolving me until I'm safe. Good thing there was another option menu pop-up before the evolution blackout.

But wait, how does it make any sense that a worm can evolve into...

If the worm had been able to look at its own evolution requirements, it would have seen just how lucky its recent grinding had been. In order for a worm of any kind to evolve into a lizard, the worm must first unlock all three stat recovery skills – that is, [HP Automatic Recovery], [MP Automatic Recovery], and [SP Augmented Recovery]. The worm must also get all three skills to Lv5 or higher. You can't have a lizard in a fantasy setting that's incapable of regeneration, after all.

In fact, worms can evolve into many different things, but these evolutions are rarely unlocked. There are quadrillions of worms, though, so a few are bound to stumble upon them just through sheer, random chance. That was the whole point.

...never mind. Maybe I shouldn't ask how it makes sense that worms can evolve into lizards, just in case the "administrators" decide to "fix" the evolution path.

100 skill points are not worth not being able to evolve into a lizard.

As for which lizard type evolve into...

Chameleon might be cool... but they're slow.

I don't know what Tegu Lizards are... so that just leaves the last option.

Monitor lizards are the big ones, right? No more insects or squirrels or birds trying to eat me if I choose that one.

But before I evolve, let me finish this eagle first...

Now let me go down into the soil a bit...

Okay voice-in-my-head, I choose the "Monitor" sub-race.

(Blackout.)

A/N: In real life, the sort of meditation that reduces inner mental chatter cannot be learned in mere minutes. The theory of meditation can be learned in a few minutes, and everyone has to start somewhere, so he started at level 1. Also, I'm not sure if there are any requirements in canon to unlock the stat recovery skills or the lessened consumption skills. It doesn't say anything in the Wiki. I'm pretty sure Kumoko just gets them after a while. No explanation. I could be wrong, though.
