Chapter Eighteen

I won't forget you, I promise

Year one apart, two years left

It had been a week since Temperance had left the Booth's and it had left a sense of insecurity over the family. They were all abandoned by some they thought they were gonna know for the rest of their life.

Today was a big day for Mary, it was the last PA meeting for the seniors, she was president of the PA meetings and she took it with great responsibility. She had gotten to know a lot of the mothers that came to the meetings, but the one that she had gotten closest with was Josie. When she met Josie she didn't know that it was Toby Donovan's mother.

"All right, settle down ladies." Mary spoke up in front of the mothers that had gathered for the meeting. The room turned towards Mary and stopped talking. "Tonight is our last meeting of the year and the topic is quite straightforward. Graduation is tomorrow and with our valedictorian.." Mary paused and she caught Josie's glance. "Our valedictorian is not attending the graduation this year so we have another student stepping in." Mary got out before feeling the air out of her lungs leaving her body. She had not said those words before tonight. Mary had tried to forget that she was gone, that she was on a school trip.

"Wait." Josie spoke up. "Tempe's gone?" She asked in confusion. Sadness took over her face. She knew how much this must break Mary's heart. Mary nodded gently. "When? How-" She lost her words when she thought back to the phone call that Toby had taken a few days ago. How he had been so unsure.

"Yeah, uhm, she left. Toby is going to be taking her spot according to Principal Cullen." Mary told the ladies in front of her. The group stayed quiet not really knowing what to do. They didn't know the girl they were talking about.

"To- Toby is taking her spot?" Josie stuttered and let out a deep breath. Mary nodded her head once again. This entire night had turned in a different direction than what Josie had anticipated.

"The graduation starts at ten am tomorrow morning." Mary shared with the group. They went over the entire schedule for tomorrow. A few questions were asked but everything was straightforward otherwise.

An hour later they had gone over all of the points of the agenda and closed for the year with a cake that one of the other moms had brought. The night ended with laughter from Josie and Mary, even though the morning would be sad for Mary. Her chosen daughter had left her.

"TB, what are you going to do about graduation?" Toby asked Brennan through the phone. She sighed and shook her head.

"You don't think I prepared for that?" She smiled.

"Of course you did, I know you, you neat freak.." He chuckled. "What did you plan?" He asked her and leaned back in his seat.

"You remember that book I gave you before I left?" She asked and fiddled with the cord of the phone. He glanced around his room and saw the book laying on his night stand. He put down the phone and got the book before picking the phone up again.

"The hero and the crown by Robin Mckinley, I have it here, why did you give it to me?" He asked knowing that there was something behind this.

"Well, for one, it's a good read." She smiled. "And.. Open it." She instructed him. He chuckled and furrowed his brows.

"Okay Miss Secret." He said and flipped open the book. As he did that, a piece of paper fell out. He glanced down at it. She stayed quiet, not daring to speak. That paper held a lot of heart on her part. He picked it up and sat down. "TB.. What did you do?" He whispered with a sadness covering his voice. "Don't tell me this is what I think it is.." He added and shook his head. His fingers grazed the paper and he held the phone tighter.

"You're going to read my speech." She told him as simply as she could without breaking down. "I talked to Principal Cullen. You're taking my spot, with my speech." She added quietly.

"You can't.. This can't.." He tried. "Are you still getting your scholarship?" He asked in confusion.

"Yes, I don't have to be at graduation, as long as it's my words that reach the peers, someone else can read them." She told him and sighed. "And I chose you." She whispered. "Please do this for me." She pleaded.

"You know I would do anything for you but.." His words disappeared into the air.

"But?" She asked him. "I know it's a lot to ask for.." She added. "I Just.. You're the only one I trust with this." She whispered.

"What about Silly?" He choked out through his thick breaths.

"He can't.. I.. He wouldn't be able to do it." She got out. "Read it before tomorrow okay? Please do this for me?" She asked.

"I.. I just.. Yeah, yeah of course I'll do it." He sighed and rubbed his face. What was he getting himself into? "But you owe me." He added.

"I'll make it up to you.." She said and they gave their goodbyes and he opened the folded paper. His eyes met the words in front of him.

"Class of 1992 I stand before you today, happy to say that we made it." Toby said into the microphone and glanced down at the paper. "Today we leave this building for the last time with hope and happiness in the air. What we are today is what makes the future what it is. Not the roles that we have played these four years. But the person that you are. The person that can say 'I did it.', you're the one that makes your future. Make it great. Make it your own." Toby told the audience.

Seeley sighed in the audience. "I can't believe she isn't here. She had been talking about this for weeks." He hissed to his mother.

"Seeley, I know this is hard, but listen to her words, please." She whispered back to him. He shook his head and turned his attention back to Toby.

"This year I was welcomed into this school with open arms. This year I will leave a better person. This year I will leave a happier person because I got to know you. This year you will leave with more knowledge and power. This year, this year is when your future starts." Toby spoke in front of the audience with pride of his friend's words.

"She was in our future, and now she is what, gone?" Seeley hissed at his mother. Mary sighed and grabbed his hand.

"Sweetie.." She whispered. She caught his sad glance and she gave him a weak smile.

"I want to thank Principal Cullen for making this year possible and making this school what it is today. You make sure that every student feels at home and welcome. I want to thank the teachers for teaching us to not only count to ten.." A laughter broke out among the students. "But also how to be decent human beings." Toby said once the crowd had settled down.

"This year wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for a few people." Toby started and looked at the family that had taken her in. Mary stopped breathing for a few moments. "Toby, thank you for being you and for teaching me to always carry a backpack with both straps." He chuckled remembering the moment in DC. "Inside joke." He said after. "Student counselor Charlotte." Toby turned to the person in question. "Thank you for helping me this year, I wouldn't be where I am without you." He turned back to the crowd. "The people that helped me the most this year were the Booth family." Toby stood for a moment and held eye contact with his best friend. The friend he had gotten to know through the wonderful that had left them all. Toby would be seeing her this fall, but no one in this room knew that.

"Mary and George. Thank you for taking me in and loving me as your own daughter. Thank you for making me feel safe and thank you for all of the memories." Toby told them and smiled. They smiled back at him and Mary blew him a kiss.

"Jared, thank you for being the little brother I have always wanted. Thank you or making me laugh every day. Take care of the turtles, okay? They mean more than you know." Toby told the smaller Booth in the crowd and a toothy grin broke out on his face.

"Seeley Booth." Toby announced. Booth's eyes widened. What did she say here that she didn't say in the letter? "You saved me." Toby had to pause and make sure that his friend was okay. He saw how his brows furrowed and he bit his lip to contain his emotions. "You saved me from evil and from myself." Toby paused before reading the next part. He wasn't sure if even dared to read it. "Thank you for being there for me when I needed it the most. I love you." Seeley sat up straight and put his hand on the chair in front of him. Did she really say that? Mary and George turned to him and had question marks covering their faces. Seeley didn't dare to look at his parents, what would he say? Would he tell the truth?

"That's why she left." Mary whispered. "That's why.." She shook her head. "Is that why?" She turned to George and then back to Seeley.

"Class of 1992, I wish you all a good future and I hope to see you soon again. Class of 1992, we did it." Toby finished off the speech and the crowd started cheering. The Booth's sat in their seats stunned at what had just happened. Seeley stared ahead whilst his parents stared at him.

The car ride home had an eerie silence over it. Seeley held his gaze on the trees that passed by the car. Jared held his gaze on the turtles in his lap. What was so meaningful with them? Mary and George stared ahead with an empty feeling in their hearts.

As they parked the car Jared ran inside straight to his room, to investigate what she had meant by her words. The three other people in the car stayed in their seats. "What happened between you two, Seeley?" George asked after a while.

"It doesn't matter now, does it?" Seeley muttered and got out of the car. He walked straight to the lake and sat down on the pebbles in front of the water.

"Do you think..?" George asked Mary as they got out of the car.

"I don't know.. I don't think we ever will know.." Mary said as they walked inside. Seeley sat out there for hours before deciding to go inside again.

Brennan walked the streets of her new town. She needed to find a new job and a place to live. The Library she had worked at in Philly had been wonderful, so she wanted to find something similar to that.

Story books and life lessons, she read to herself. Brennan shrugged and walked inside the store. She was met by the wonderful scent of books and a burning candle by the register. "Welcome to Story books and life lessons, would you like a story or a lesson?" A cheery voice of an older lady made it to her ears.

"How about a job?" Brennan asked her with uncertainty. The Lady chuckled and waved her over.

"What's your name, dear?" The Lady asked her with a smile.

"My name is Temperance Brennan." She told her.

"An author's name, I'd say." She smiled, which made Brennan blush. "What brings you to my store today? I haven't seen you around before."

"I recently moved here for college and I need to find a job to support myself." Brennan told the lady.

"College?" The woman asked. "You don't look more than 16 to me." She eyes Brennan up and down.

"I'm not. I am 16." She told the woman. "What's your name?" Brennan asked her and shifted her weight on her feet.

"Rose Hansen Crawley" She told Brennan with a smile. "So, you need a job to support yourself? What about your parents?" She asked her with concern.

"They uhm, I don't have any." Brennan told her quietly.

"Where are you staying?" Rose asked her.

"At the motel down the road at the moment, I haven't found a permanent living arrangement for now. I'm living on campus once school starts." Brennan told her and pointed in the direction of the motel.

"No you're not. I don't trust that fella." Rose told her and shook her head.

"But I have nowhere else to go." Brennan protested.

"Check out today and bring your things here this afternoon. I have been looking for an employee and someone that can occupy the vacant room above the store." Rose told her with a smile. She had been wanting to take in a college student since her daughter passed away a few years ago. Brennan reminded her of Lara. She had a bright future in front of her but a drunk driver thought otherwise.

"What? Are you serious?" Brennan asked with a toothy grin as excitement took over her body.

"Yes. Yes, I'm serious." Rose smiled. "But, I have a few rules." She told Brennan.

"Rules?" Brennan asked her as she tilted her head in confusion.

"Number one, the curfew is eleven pm." Rose saw a smile reach Brennan's lips. "Number two, no boys."

"No need to worry about boys, the boy I love is in Philly." She told her with a broken heart. Rose gave her a weak smile.

"Number three, always tell me where you are, I don't want to go around worrying." She told Brennan. "And number four the most important one." She leaned in. "Never. Ever. Get into a car where the driver had been drinking, are we clear?" She asked Brennan. She nodded quickly. "Those are my four and only rules." Rose smiled and put the papers that were in her hands in a neat pile.

"I can follow those four rules." Brennan said and straightened her posture.

"Then I'll see you here at five thirty." Rose smiled and waved her off. "Go look around the shops and tour the town a little." She told Brennan.

"Are you sure? You don't need any help today?" Brennan questioned and glanced around the shop.

"I just have to move some boxes to the back of the store" She gestured to the boxes that stood packed on top of each other in the corner.

"I can help you with that." Brennan smiled. Rose sighed in defeat.

"If we finish it up early we can get some pastries at the shop around the corner and I can show you your room." Rose told her and Brennan nodded. She walked around the counter and started lifting the boxes and Rose pointed to where she wanted them.

The summer went on for both Booth and Brennan. She had gotten to know Rose very well and she spent all of her time at the shop and with Rose when she wasn't out with her friends for a glass of wine.

Booth had declined his offer for the military and had taken a job at school, working beside Janitor Wilson. Mary and George had been excited to know that their eldest son didn't go off to war just yet. They knew it was something he would eventually do.

As the beginning of the school year came near and the summer was coming to a close a letter in the mail came for Booth. Actually two letters, but one of them he never opened. The letter that he had been waiting for he ripped open as soon as his fingers touched it.

"I got in." He smiled to himself. "I got in." He repeated. The community college in Philadelphia had accepted him. He was giving himself a future. The other letter burned in his hand. He knew who it was from just by the way that the B's were written and the way the S was bigger than the rest of the letters. It was from her.

He walked inside and greeted his parents. "I got in." He repeated the words he had said to himself. His parents cheered and gathered him into a group hug.

"We knew you would get in, son." George said with excitement. Seeley gave him a toothy grin. The third person he wanted to tell had written a letter that sat firmly in his hand. The fourth person ran down the stairs and joined into the celebration. Mary told the group that they had to go out for dinner to celebrate the wonderful news.

The fifth person lived across town. They were meeting up at the basketball court later this afternoon. They only had a few days left before Toby left for college in Illinois. Toby had been his rock since she left. They had met up almost every day, sometimes just to hand out and other times they met at the court.

They met up shortly after five in the afternoon, Mary had told Booth that they were leaving for dinner at half past six so he had to be home by then.

"Did you get the letter today? What did it say?" Toby asked as soon as they were in ear reach.

"You are now looking at a college student." Booth called out with pride.

"I knew it. Dude. I knew it." Toby cheered and quickly gave him a hug. It wasn't something that usually did so they let go of each other quickly. "Congratulations." Toby said with a smile.

"Thanks man." Booth said before his smile dropped. "It wasn't the only letter that came today." He said with a quiet tone.

"Oh? Did an acceptance letter for being a grumpy pants come too? Did you get in?" Toby asked with a mock pout.

"Fuck off Donovan." A smile broke out on Booth's lips. "No, not that." He reached into his back pocket and gave Toby the letter. "This came." Toby's smile dropped as he saw the letter.

"Is that from?" He asked without mentioning who he meant. Booth nodded gently. "Are you going to open it?" He asked as they walked over to sit on the bench. Toby Eyed the letter in front of him. Brennan hadn't mentioned this letter so it came as a shock for him as well.

"No." Booth said simply and sighed.

"Why not?" Toby questioned. "You have been begging all summer for her to give a sign of life and now you have it and you don't even want to hear what she has to say?" He glanced at Booth's focused expression and then back at the letter. He saw staind from tears that had dried into the paper.

"This is my sign of life." Booth said and pointed at the letter. "If she has something important to say she can say it to my face." He added with a hurt expression.

"I know this sucks, having someone close to you leave." Toby started. "But, at least she is reaching out."

"She left us Toby. She left. She broke up with me." Booth told him harshly. "What am I supposed to do? Cry and pray every night that she will come back one day?" He asked and stood up. "Because news Flash, Donovan, I do that." He winced as he heard the words leave his mouth. No one was supposed to know that.

"Then why won't you read the letter?" He asked the pacing boy in front of him

"Because.." Booth told him and stood still.

"Because..?" Toby repeated

"Because I- Because I've read her other letter a million times already." He exclaimed and hid his face in his hands. "I know it word for word. She says one day we'll meet again. One fucking day we'll meet again." He said into his hands before letting them fall. His gaze fell to the ground. "I miss her so much.." He whispered. "I loved her more than I have ever loved anyone." He confessed. "And I don't want to open that letter because what if it says that it all was a lie? What if she says that, that one day she mentioned in the other letter, won't happen?" He questioned and glanced at Toby. Who sat in silence because there weren't any words he could say to make the situation better. He had already said everything that he could. "What if all of the things I said to her that last day made her change her mind about the things she said in the letter? About everything we did together? I can't imagine how I would feel if that's what that letter says, so I'll leave it in one of my books until I can handle reading it." He sighed. "It might be years from now." He then smiled and kicked on a few pebbles. "When I'm old and grey and have her by my side." He whispered.

"If you love somebody, let them go. For if they return, they were always yours. If they don't, they never were." Toby said and smiled. Booth glanced up at him and furrowed his brows. "Temperance Brennan quoting Kahlil Gibran" He chuckled. "Look, Seeley, anyone who was able to be near you guys knew that you guys are meant to be. Everyone. You will find your way back to each other somehow." He told Booth.

"You really think that?" He asked Toby.

"Of course." Toby smiled.

Brennan had been working at the shop the entire summer. She loved every minute of it. This job was twice as good as the last place and it didn't have a creepy coworker hitting on her. She had spent the day putting away the new books that Rose had ordered the other week.

She heard the door open and the bell filled the room. "Welcome to story books and life lessons, would you like a book or a lesson today?" Brennan called out to the customer who came into the shop. She continued to work, the welcome line was something they said to all the customers.

"Do you perhaps have a sherlock section?" The person asked and Brennan froze at the request and she didn't notice the voice that accompanied the person.

"I- uhm- yes, Yes, we have that." She stuttered and put down the book she had just picked up and walked out into view of the other person. The air left her body and she ran up and hugged him. "Is this how you greet all the customers in this shop?" He chuckled into her hair.

"Just people I've missed." She whispered into his shoulder. "And I have missed you, Toby." they let go of each other and looked the other one up and down.

"Dear, who is this?" Rose smiled behind them. "Is this the boy?" She eyed Toby. Brennan giggled and shook her head. Toby glanced at Brennan and then at Rose.

"No, no.. Sadly.." Brennan told Rose. "This is Toby Donovan. The boy's best friend." She said and put her hand on his shoulder. "And mine, you were my best friend first, he stole you." Brennan poured for a second before letting a smile break out on her face.

"Have you seen him? I just had to be his friend." Toby smiled as he fanned himself with his hand. Brennan pushed him teasingly. He chuckled and put his arms around her shoulder. "So, this is the wonderful work place you found?" He glanced around the shop.

"Yes, this is the place." Brennan said and waved Rose över. She walked over and met her halfway. "And this is Rose, my saviour." She put her arm around Rose's shoulders.

"It's nice to put a beautiful face on such a lovely woman." Toby said and reached out his hand and shook Rose's.

"Such a gentleman, flattery will get you everywhere around here." Rose chuckled and winked.

"Duly noted." He winked back. "No but seriously, do you guys have a Sherlock section? He wanted me to see if this town had any new ones in."

"He?" Rose asked and raised her brows as she smiled at Brennan.

"Yes, him." She told Rose and turned to Toby. Brennan sighed and picked at her nails. "Do you.. Has he.. Uhm.." She stuttered as she tried to find her words.

"The letter?" Toby asked with a frown. Brennan's eyes lit up at the mention of what she wanted to know about. She nodded gently. "He got it." Toby said simply.

"But..?" She questioned.

"It was unopened when I left.. He was afraid of what the letter would say.." He said gently.

"But he got it?" She asked with hope. Toby nodded as an answer.

"He said something about opening it when he was old-"

"Old and grey and with me by his side.." Brennan finished his sentence. Toby stared at her in confusion. "It's something he would say sometimes." She said quietly and smiled. "and to answer your question, yes we do have a Sherlock section." She said and walked over to the part dedicated to Sherlock Holmes.

When school started for Booth he kept his job working beside Janitor Wilson, he learned that his name was Derek over the summer. He had realised that he didn't know what his full name was, he had only called him Wilson for weeks. Derek needed the help around school, so he stayed for the money and because he enjoyed working beside him.

"How's school going for you, son?" Derek asked as they put the last things in the cleaning closet.

"It's going good, better than I thought it would go, actually." He told Derek.

"Have you heard anything from that girl of yours?" He asked and locked the door.

"Not since the last letter." Booth said as he glanced at the floor. "That's probably why I haven't heard from her."

"You still haven't opened it yet?" Derek asked and Booth shook his head. "It's been three months man.." He sighed.

"But if I don't open it, it's still real, you know? If I open it and she tells me she never loved me.." His words disappeared as his thoughts took over

"But what if she wants to give up everything to be with you?" Derek questioned as they walked through the halls of the now empty school.

"I guess I'll never know." Booth shrugged his shoulders. Derek chuckled and pushed him teasingly.

"If you would man up and read it, you would know." He laughed louder and Booth grabbed him around his neck and ruffled his hair. "Hey, hey, hey, you should take care of your elder, not beat them up." Derek chuckled and pushed him off his body.

Summer turned into fall and fall turned into winter. Booth studied hard and managed to get good grades on the papers he sent in. He had made some friends in school and they often studied together, which motivated him to continue with his dream of becoming a cop. He realised during the fall that, that's what he was supposed to do in life.

For christmas break Toby came back home and they had decided to go to Sal's for some hot chocolate and ice cream. Something they both had thought was a foolish idea but it was something Brennan had insisted on being a good idea and it had become a thing they did once in a while.

"Seeley Booth, long time no see." Sal stood in front of him with arms outstretched ready for a hug. Booth smiled and gave the man a hug.

"Sal." He exclaimed. "How's it going? Business good?" He asked as he stepped back.

"I lost my three best customers to college." He winked. "But otherwise, business is good." Seeley laughed and glanced up at the menu. Sal glanced behind him and back at his face. "No Tempe?" He frowned. Booth froze at the mention of her name.

"No Tempe." He repeated hesitantly.

"What happened, son?" He asked gently.

"It's, uhm, it's complicated.." Booth sighed. He gave Sal a weak smile. "But one day we'll both come by again." He added.

"I'll look forward to that day." He smiled. "Is the T-man coming?" He asked.

"Yeah, he is on his way." He nodded. "We will probably just have the usual with hot chocolate." He told Sal so he could prepare their ice cream. Sal nodded and started on their drinks.

A little smalltalk later and Toby made it to the parlor. "Silly Silly boy.." He teased and sat down in front of Booth.

"Toby Woby, took you long enough." Booth smiled and nudged Toby's hot chocolate towards him. Toby nodded as a thank you and took a sip. "How's school?" He asked. He knew how school was, they talked the other day. He just wished he had some news about something. Her. Anything.

"Same old, Same old." He said nonchalantly. He glanced up at Booth and saw him in distress. He wanted to tell him. He needed to tell him something. "You know.." Booth glanced up at him with hope in his eyes. "I heard from her the other day." He said and instantly mantally slapped himself. She is gonna be so mad.

"You did?" He asked and leaned forward.

"Yeah, uhm, she called home." He told him and took a spoon full of ice cream.

"She did?" Booth exclaimed with excitement. "What did she say? Did she ask about me?" He asked and sat up straight.

"She just wanted to uhm.." Fuck, what did she want? Toby asked himself. "She wanted to say sorry for just leaving." He said.

"You didn't get a letter did you?" Booth asked him. Toby shook his head gently.

"She said she missed us." He shrugged his shoulders. Booth bit the inside of his lip.

"It's for the best, right? That she left?" He asked Toby hesitantly.

"Is it though?" Toby asked with a pained expression.

Booth shrugged his shoulders and the both of them stayed silent and ate their ice cream. Sal stood at the register and looked at the two boys eating their deserts in silence. They never did. What even happened since they last saw him?

"Don't be mad." Toby said as he walked into Brennan's dorm room. It was exactly three weeks since they last spoke.

"What did you do?" Brennan asked and folded her arms over her chest. "Did you kiss Sarah at new years?" She smiled. He had talked about how he needed a date for new years to not end up in a situation he didn't want to be in.

"No, much worse." He said and closed the door. Brennan shut her book and sat up straight.

"You kissed Emma? Toby, I told you that, that wouldn't be a good idea.." Brennan sighed.

"Worse." Toby said and walked as close as he dared to get to her without getting hurt after he said the next thing he was about to say.

"What can be worse than that?" She questioned.

"I told Booth about you." He said and covered his face.

"You WHAT?" She exclaimed and stood up and slapped his arm. "That is the one thing you were forbidden to do." She said and slapped his arm with each word to emphasize what she was saying.

"I know, I KNOW" He exclaimed and grabbed her arms to keep her from hitting him. "I know I shouldn't have said anything. But he looked so sad and I just.. He just.. I told him that you called home and that you missed us." He said and held her gaze. "That's it." He continued. "I needed to give him something." He sighed and let her go. "I'm going stir crazy here, having to keep you a secret from him. It feels like you're cheating on him and I'm the one to blame but I don't have anything to do with it, I'm just the messenger." He said and threw up his hands in the air. "And the messenger always gets shot, everyone knows that." He said and panted from not breathing. She walked up to him and hugged him. He relaxed and put his arms around her.

"What did he say?" She whispered into his shoulder.

"He said 'It's for the best, right? That she left?' And I asked him if it really was for the best.." He sighed into her hair. "He just shrugged and we sat in silence for a while."

"It is for the best.." Brennan said and let him go and straightened out her dress. "For now." She cleared her throat and wiped away the few tears that had decided to fall against her cheeks.

"Yeah, for now.." Toby repeated and glanced at Brennan. What was she even doing? Why was she doing this to herself? To them? To him? He shook his head and rubbed his face. "Did felicity come around?" He asked and tried to change the subject.

"She stopped talking to me. Something about me being too young.." She mumbled.

"Bullshit excuse.." Toby scoffed. "Wanna go to Rose's and eat pastries?" He asked with a smile. Brennan nodded with a smile and grabbed her coat. They walked out the door together.
