Chapter 9: Lena POV

"I'll have that paperwork to you by tomorrow morning," the lawyer says. I thank him and walk him out of my office. Then I return to my desk and sink into my chair. I look out the window at the city, taking a moment to breathe in the first moment of calm I've had all day.

"Jess, hold my calls for the rest of the day," I say into the intercom. "And could you come in here?"

In a moment, Jess is standing in my office. "Yes, Ms. Luthor?"

"You made that reservation at Antonio's for 8:00, right?"

"Yes, Ms. Luthor," Jess answers.

"Great," I say. I pause before continuing. "Could you also clear my schedule for tomorrow morning?"

"Sure thing, Ms. Luthor."

"Thanks, Jess. That'll be all." Jess retreats from my office and I reach for my phone where it's lying on the desk.

I shoot off a quick text to Kara.

L: How's your day going? We still on for Antonio's at 8:00?

It only takes a moment before Kara responds.

K: Today has been wild! Cat's got me chasing a story on a string of bank robberies.

K: And yes, still on for 8:00! Can't wait to see you :)

I frown at the text relaying her assignment.

L: Okay, be careful, darling.

K: You know I always am.

I put my phone back down and pull up a file on the computer. I spend the rest of the afternoon working, and get much more done than I usually do thanks to Jess' call screening.

At 7:30, I begin to shut everything down. I open the top drawer of my desk and pull out a blue suede box, tucking it carefully into my purse. I take the elevator down to ground floor, where a black sedan rolls up to the curb. The drive to the restaurant is quick and I end up getting there ten minutes early. I'm shown to the table, where I find Kara already waiting for me.

"Couldn't wait to see me, I see," I joke and she looks at me fondly.

"Of course I couldn't," she says and my heart melts.

We talk and laugh and drink copious amounts of wine during dinner. After dessert, which Kara ate most of, I suggest a walk along the waterfront. We walk through the park, hand in hand, enjoying the cool night breeze. Eventually, we find a bench and I tug on Kara's hand, asking her to sit with me.

"Kara," I say, beginning to feel nervous. "I…I have something I want to ask you."

"What is it?" Kara asks, a hint of concern coloring her bright blue eyes.

"I- I-," I splutter. God, I'm so nervous. I take a deep breath, calming myself, and look at the woman I am madly in love with. "I love you so much. Meeting you is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Will you do the honor of marrying me?"

Kara's face lights up and she surges forward, touching her lips to mine. Then she utters the single best word in the English language.

"Yes!"
