"Where's the Benadryl? Jade asks frantically as she and Beck enter the nearest convenience store
"Aisle three..." The worker behind the counter sighs as he flips through a magazine
"Which one is that?"
"The one with the giant three hanging over it?"
"You're sure it's in aisle three?" Jade calls back to him as she rushes down the aisle
"No..." The worker admits
"Jade, I told you. I'm fine." Beck sighs as he lingers behind her
"I doubt that." Jade shakes her head, arriving at the shelf she had been looking for "Alright, Benadryl, Benadryl...fuck, a lot of Benadryl."
"A lot?"
"Beck, look at your face."
He pulls his phone out again to see what it is that has Jade freaking out so bad. When he opens the camera app he sees that in addition to his ear, the rest of his face has also swollen up to twice the size that it should be. His skin is also red and splotchy.
"Fuck!" He exclaims and grabs the box of Benadryl out of her hands
Frantically, Beck rips open the box and grabs the bottle. Thankfully, it's the liquid kind rather than the pills and he's able to twist the cap off and just start drinking it.
"You might want to look at the doses..." Jade suggests
"I think my face says it all!" Beck exclaims as he takes another sip "C'mon, start working!"
"It doesn't work like that..." Jade sighs, looking around to make sure he isn't frightening any other customers "Why don't we-
"Here." Beck pulls his wallet out of his pocket and hands it to her "Go buy two bottles."
"Two?" Jade clarifies "Are you sure?"
"Just to be safe." Beck nods
"Alright."
Beck didn't think his second date with Jade could go any worse than their first one had. After all, it would be pretty hard to beat causing her physical injury and then taking her to an art exhibit put on by her ex-boyfriend. He's managed it somehow though...he embarrassed her in front of her boss and has now derailed her entire evening.
Jade pays for the two bottles of Benadryl with her own credit card instead of Beck's and gives his wallet back to him. She feels incredibly guilty about the how the evening has played out. Not only was Beck unaware he was basically walking into an interrogation about Robbie Shapiro, now he's had some kind of allergic reaction to something and his body clearly isn't handling it well.
It doesn't take long for the Benadryl to start having an effect of Beck. Within a few minutes of leaving the convenience store, he's loopy and giggly, and if Jade didn't know better she might think he was drunk. Thankfully, the swelling in his face seems to have started to go down, but she knows that she needs to get him somewhere to lay down. Benadryl causes drowsiness, and he's ingested quite a bit of it.
"Just a few more blocks." She chuckles as she pulls Beck along with her "Then you can lay down."
His arm is draped around her shoulders so she can steady him if he starts to falter in his steps at all.
"I don't needa lay down." Beck shakes his head "I'm okay."
"Alright, champ." Jade smirks "If you say so."
"You're pretty..."
"Thank you."
She isn't sure where he lives, and he isn't in the right mindset right now to try and give her directions. Jade knows the best option right now is to just take him back to her apartment with her and try to make him as comfortable as possible on the couch.
"What was with the third degree back there?" Beck asks her as they walk
"What do you mean?"
"You and your boss." Beck clarifies "Why do you care so much about the guy that does my taxes?"
Even under the influence of the allergy medication, he knows he has to protect the secrecy surrounding what he does for a living. If he were to ever be exposed, his business would be worthless.
"We just think they're an interesting pair is all." Jade tells him "We're not sure how a guy like him could end up with someone like her."
"What's that supposed to mean? A guy like him?"
"He's a little out of her league, don't you think?"
"Do you know her?" Beck questions her "How do you know what kind of people she likes to surround herself with?"
"You seem to be getting awfully defensive about the guy who does your taxes." Jade points out "Are you sure you two aren't friends?"
"Nah, I just like to play the devil's advocate." Beck assures her "There's always a lot more to people than what you can see at first glance, you know?"
"Yeah." Jade nods, a small smile forming on her lips "I know."
When he first approached her at the bar the night they met, she thought he was going to be just like every other guy. Shallow, self-absorbed, just another jerk looking to get laid and move on...but he's not like that. At least...not that she can tell so far.
"Someone is doing pretty well for herself!" Beck gasps as they step inside Jade's apartment
It's rather spacious, at least for Los Angeles. In a city like Houston or Chicago it might be considered average...but it's very nice regardless of circumstances.
"Oh stop." Jade smirks
"What's the catch?" Beck asks as she leads him over to the couch "You got a roommate?"
"Nope." Jade chuckles "Just me."
"I had a roommate once." Beck sighs as he lays down on the couch
"Oh yeah?" Jade raises an eyebrow at him as she reaches for a blanket "Why do you say it like that? What happened?"
"He married my sister." Beck informs her "They're expecting a baby any day now."
"Aw, Uncle Beck."
"That's me." Beck nods "Do you have any siblings?"
"A brother, yeah." Jade nods "Tyler, he lives back in New York."
"He's younger." Beck says "Right?"
Some of the effects from the Benadryl that had caused him to act so strangely are beginning to wear off, all he really feels at this point is tired. He can tell by the tone of voice and the look on her face when she mentions her brother that she's older than he is. By how much, he can't be sure, but there's definitely a protective instinct present in her.
Jade doesn't say anything, but nods ever so slightly as she sits down on the coffee table next to the couch. A 'how did you know?' look crosses her face.
"I could hear it in your voice." Beck shrugs "Sort of an...innate protective thing."
"I guess...yeah." Jade looks down at her hands "He, uh...he almost died once."
"Oh shit..."
"I was fourteen, he was six." Jade continues "We were skating out on the pond behind our grandmother's house...and he fell through the ice. My step-dad pulled him out...gave him mouth-to-mouth...longest three minutes of my life, you know?"
She isn't sure why she suddenly feels so comfortable telling him that personal of a story, she's not even sure she's told Tori about that. Something about Beck Oliver though just makes her feel...comfortable. Like she can talk to him, trust him...yet another reason to make her feel guilty about tonight.
"Yeah, I'm sure." Beck nods sympathetically
"I'm not so sure I ever got over it." Jade admits
"Kind defines you, doesn't it?" Beck asks her as he rolls onto his side, propping his head up on his elbow as he lays on the couch "Like one moment you're gliding along, and the next you're standing in the rain watching your life fall apart."
That night in college when he caught Sara cheating on him with another man in a car outside the library...it had been raining. It had been a defining moment for him, and changed the course of his life. If he hadn't caught her...if that moment hadn't defined him, he would be in a different line of work now for sure...and at a much different place in his life.
"Just like that..." Jade agrees "Except in my case...it was snow."
"Some kind of precipitation..." Beck smirks, his eyes growing heavy with sleep
"Is that what happened to you?" Jade asks him "Did you get caught in some kind of precipitation?"
"Nothing as dramatic as falling through the ice but..." Beck hesitates "Yeah, definitely..."
"It left a scar."
"Yeah, it did."
Jade can tell that Beck is quite tired, and that he's about to succumb to the effects of the Benadryl. That's where she'll leave the conversation for tonight, and let him sleep. As his eyes begin to close she covers the rest of his body with the blanket, and reaches over to turn off the lamp on the table beside the couch before creeping off to get ready for bed herself.
When she emerges from her bedroom the next morning, Jade expects to find Beck exactly where she had left him...asleep on the couch. Instead, she finds the blanket she had given him neatly folded and sitting on one of the cushions.
"Beck?" She calls out as she looks around the apartment "Are you here?"
There's no answer.
"Fuck!" She sighs, collapsing onto the couch herself
He left.
He left!
Despite everything that had gone down the night before, they actually seemed to be having a decent conversation, making a deeper connection, before he fell asleep. Not to mention she hadn't been able to get any details at all out of him about this Robbie Shapiro guy who apparently does his taxes. Frustrated, Jade grabs one of the throw pillows and presses it against her face so it can muffle her exasperated groan.
"Should I come back later?"
She removes the pillow from her face and looks up to see Beck standing in the entryway, dressed in his clothes from the night before and holding a paper bag in one hand and a carrier of paper coffee cups in the other.
"Hi." She says, startled by his sudden appearance "I, uh...I thought you left?"
"I did." Beck admits "And then I came back...with breakfast. I figured it was the least that I could do. You know...after I...last night, the Benadryl...yeah."
He turns his back to her to set the paper bag and drink carrier down in the kitchen, and Jade takes it as an opportunity to rush over to the mirror on the far wall and fix her hair. She pulls it out of the ponytail she usually keeps it in while she sleeps and combs her fingers through it, trying to make it look as presentable as possible.
"I wasn't really sure what you were drinking so I got a regular black coffee, a latte, an earl grey tea, and uh...something with chai in the title." Beck smiles, turning back towards her
"Oh, uh...wow. Thank you." Jade says "I'll take the black coffee, as long as you brought some sugar packets?"
"You know I did." Beck reaches into the paper bag and pulls out two of the pink packets "Let me guess, two?"
"You're a good guesser." She nods, taking the sugar from him
"Yes!" Beck cheers "Look at that."
"Oh god..." Jade groans "You're a morning person, aren't you?"
"It's like I always tell my clients..." Beck chuckles "Begin each day as if it were on purpose."
He grabs the paper cup that holds the latte and raises it to hers, and they share in a brief 'cheers' before each taking a sip of their respective drinks.
"You going to work today?" He asks Jade
"I am." She nods
"Mind if I wait around while you get ready?" He shrugs "I'm meeting a client near your office, we could take the bus together."
"I take the metro, actually." Jade informs him "But I'll let you walk me to the station?"
"Sounds great."
Jade prides herself in how quickly she is able to get up and make herself look like a presentable human-being in the mornings. Part of it has to do with the fact that she despises waking up early and has to be quick because she stays in bed for so long, but part of it is also attributed to her refined makeup skills. Within forty-five minutes she and Beck are ready to go, and leave her apartment complex together.
The metro stop is only about two blocks away from Jade's building, so they really don't have that far to go.
"S'a beautiful day." Beck smiles as they near the station
"Yeah." Jade agrees
"With a beautiful girl." He smirks over at her
"Thank you." She blushes "Uh, you should...call me sometime."
"I definitely will." Beck nods
They both stand there for a moment, smiling at each other before Jade decides to take the initiative. She leans in, her face just centimeters away from Beck's...and he leans in as well. The two of them share a kiss, smiles forming on both sets of lips, briefly before the sound of the incoming train interrupts them.
"I'll see you?" Jade smirks as they break away
"You'll see me." Beck nods
