CHAPTER 9
Unknown location, same day…
*YOU'VE GOT MAIL*
"Shit! Goddamned Pre-quirk email!" He swore activating a quirk to catch the plate of Rigatoni he'd dropped at the sound of the unexpected computer announcement. Only three people had his original email address and he wondered which one of them was contacting him.
He slid the plate onto the desk beside the keyboard and reached for the mouse. Glancing over at his youngest protégé who was sitting on the couch playing a videogame and eating pork rinds from a bag, Genten clicked on the email icon. A message popped up from his eldest protégé who was stationed in Japan.
The message was short "You need to see this" followed by a link. Odd. This particular contact was usually quite verbose in his messages. He clicked on the link and suddenly understood why the man had sent it. A video was worth a thousand words. He scooped up a bite of Chicken Rigatoni as he watched a group of heroes rescue a child who was floating in the air gripping tightly to a statue. "Hmmm…I see. This changes things." He hastily finished his dinner while he played back the video one more time.
Spinning his desk chair around, he spoke to his youngest. "Tomura, my boy, save your game and pack your things. There's been a change of plans."

Aizawa-Yamada apartment, later that evening…
A light tap on the door had Kiku glancing up from the drawing of Kumonori-sensei she had started. "Kiku, can I come in?" The greenette hopped up and opened the door to admit her brother. She sat down on the futon mattress Shouta had replaced her broken bed with temporarily and patted the spot beside her. Hitoshi plopped down beside her wearing his one and only set of All Might pajamas. "What's up?"
"Are you okay? I was so scared, first at school when you went flying over the wall, then when we got home, and I thought Yagi-san was going to take you away from us." Hitoshi whispered. The sniffle from his sister had him turning to embrace her larger form. The greenette melted into his arms sobbing out the stress she had kept hidden from the adults. They sat that way for a few minutes, crying on one another before Kiku straightened up and wiped her eyes. "Thanks, I needed that. Can you believe how weird my quirk is? I mean not only was I really floating but I could also feel myself pulling at the statue, but instead of pulling it toward me, it felt like I was being pulled to it."
"You should ask your dad and our papas. Maybe they can help figure out why your quirk is being weird. It's almost as though you had several quirks what with that black stuff from the other day and now this, something strange is definitely going on." He agreed, also weirded out by the strange things his sister's quirk was doing.
"I'll ask Papa Shou and Papa Zashi in the morning. I'm really tired now. Goodnight, 'Toshi." She mumbled, curling into the blankets as Hitoshi climbed to his feet and made to exit the room. He stopped at the door and turned back for a moment. "Hey Kiku, does Yagi-san remind you of someone? I mean I kind of feel like we should know him from somewhere."
"Hmmm?" Kiku mumbled, her tired mind only half registering Hitoshi's question. Hitoshi shrugged his shoulders and padded down the hallway to his room. 'Never mind,' he thought, 'it will come to me eventually.'

The four men and one woman sat spread out across the room. The dark-haired one leaned forward, elbows on his knees as he sipped at his bourbon. "So, Yagi-san, mind telling me what the hell is going on with your daughter's quirk? In all your time as a pro-hero, I've never seen you manifest any of the abilities Kiku has shown us in the last couple of days."
"What else happened? I mean I know it looks like she somehow manifested Nana's quirk, though as far as I know neither Inko nor I are related to Nana." Toshinori looked genuinely perplexed.
"Yesterday morning we discovered Kiku was allergic to caffeine. She drank one of Shouta's breakfast shakes," both Hizashi and Shuzenji shot a glare at the shame-faced man. "It caused her to rage and suddenly sprout black ropes from her wrists. She managed to completely destroy the kitchen and scared the cats half to death. I was surprised they were willing to come near her today."
"Hmm, that kind of sounds like old Lariat's quirk," Sorahiko commented. At their questioning looks, he clarified. "He was a hero when Nana and I were younglings. We often speculated he might have been one of the holders; he had a sudden power up and died young." He turned to Toshinori. "You still got that old notebook Nana left you? The one that has been passed down?"
"I think so. I'll have to go back through my apartment and look for it. I haven't even thought of that in a long time. Are you thinking what I think you are thinking?" Toshinori raised a blond eyebrow at his mentor.
"Probably. I want to cross-reference what I remember with those notes if you can find them. It might give us more of an idea of what we are dealing with." Sorahiko replied, standing up from the chair.
"Care to enlighten us mere mortals?" Shouta asked with an irritated twitch in his left eye. Hizashi sat forward on the edge of the couch next to his husband also eager to understand what they were talking about.
"One for All is a stockpiling quirk. That much we know," Shuzenji interjected. "They are speculating that power isn't the only thing being stockpiled in the quirk."
All of the color drained from Hizashi's face and a feeling of dread swept over Shouta. "You mean to tell us there might be Eight quirks inside of her?" Hizashi whispered, glancing over his shoulder in the direction of the children's bedrooms to make sure no little ears were listening to their conversation.
"Well, um, technically other than the original, only six," Toshinori hedged, a large hand scratching nervously at the back of his neck.
"What do you mean, six? Aren't you the eighth holder?" Shouta asked, confused.
"He-he, yeah, well, if you don't count the original quirk, it would be six. I…um…ahh…"
"What the boy is too embarrassed to tell you is that before he received One for All he was quirkless," Sorahiko cut in, rolling his eyes at Toshinori who blushed sheepishly.
Shouta sighed and massaged the bridge of his nose with his unbandaged hand – Shuzenji had refused to heal it, stating he should know better than to punch someone who made brick walls seem soft. "Please, find that notebook." He bowed to their guests and turned to Hizashi. I'm going to bed. I have patrol in three hours."
Somei private academy two days later…
The students fidgeted in their seats, glancing every so often at the greenette whose seat was near the center of the room. Tenya felt bad for the girl. He had returned home the night of the incident, ranting about the new girl breaking the toys and damaging the statute (there were cracks in Crimson Riot's marble arm from where Kiku had gripped it). Tensei had put a stop to the complaining, sitting him down to explain how it wasn't the child's fault and reminding Tenya of the times he still occasionally crashed into walls when he sent his engines into overdrive. He explained that the little girl was on permanent overdrive and was learning to control her power and reminded him a hero has to compassionate and understanding stating he hoped Tenya would help her and try to be her friend.
His mother had agreed with Tensei, even going so far as to explain that accidents happen, and he should not blame Kiku for the damage to the swing or the injuries to the other students. Tenya glanced over at the empty seat where Anderson-san usually sat. He wondered if she was still in the hospital from the concussion.
His thoughts were interrupted by a comment from his seatmate to his left, Nobunaga Daichi. "I don't know what the faculty is thinking letting a little villain like her remain in class with us normal children," the reptilian boy hissed out. Tenya idly noted the fact that the boy's tongue was forked even as most of his attention was captured by Shinso-kun lunging at the young man.
"Shut up you stupid-head. Don't talk about my sister that way!" Hitoshi threw himself at the snake boy, his little fist solidly connecting with Daichi's face just as Kumonori-sensei walked into the room.
"Shinso-kun! Nobunaga-kun! Stop this at once!" Her sharp command was enough to stop Hitoshi mid-punch. He looked up at Kumonori-sensei and the color drained from his face. Daichi took that moment to sock Hitoshi in the teeth.
"Nobunaga-kun! One more act from you and you will be expelled," the teacher moved forward to put herself between the two boys. This wasn't Daichi's first offence in the classroom. Most students gave the reptilian child a wide berth for good reason.
Kiku and Momo each took one of Hitoshi's arms, assisting him in returning to his seat. He sat there dejected, wiping a trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth as Kiku rubbed his back, counting quietly under her breath. As sensei helped Nobunaga back into his seat, a familiar face peeked in the door. Tenya perked up; what was Tensei doing here?
"Is it safe to come in yet?" The blue-haired man asked. The teacher held up a finger in a wait-a-moment gesture.
"What was the fighting about?" Kumonori looked at the two boys, one white eyebrow raised in inquiry.
"If I may, sensei," Tenya interjected. The teacher nodded at him. "Nobunaga-kun called Midoriya-chan a villain and complained about the faculty allowing her to stay. Shinso-kun got mad and hit him."
"I see…" Kumonori-sensei took a deep breath. "The two of you will remain in at recess and accompany me to the principal's office. In the meantime, we are going to be starting something new for the next few days. It has come to my attention that some of you believe some of your classmates are villains or have villainous quirks, so we are going to discuss quirks and what differentiates a hero and a villain. I have arranged a series of guests to come and talk to you about these topics. I hope you will give them your full attention." She gestured and Tensei entered the class followed by a tall black-haired young woman in a white lab-coat.
"Iida-san, the class is yours." She stepped back to make room for the newcomers.
Tensei cleared his throat. "Good Morning class. My name is Iida Tensei, but most of you probably know me better as Ingenium." He allowed the murmuring for a few moments before raising his hand for silence. "Yesterday you witnessed a quirk accident, something that commonly happens with children and even some adults. Today we are going to talk about quirks. I heard some of you referring to some classmates' quirks as 'villainous' or 'useless' or referring to your classmates as villains." I am here to explain why that is wrong. Kuno-san, would you like to introduce yourself and tell the class about your quirk?"
The woman in the lab coat stepped forward. "Good Morning class, my name is Kuno Kodachi. I am a third-year residency student in the Medical Program at Tokyo University. When I was your age, I wanted to be a support hero like Recovery Girl. How many of you have heard of Recovery Girl?"
Tenya noticed that other than himself, Kiku and Hitoshi, no one else raised a hand.
The woman at the podium continued. "For many years people told me I couldn't be a hero because they thought my quirk was useless."
"What is your quirk, Kuno-san?" Kiku interrupted.
"My quirk is called Black Rose. Simply put, it allows me to grow a black rosebush with a single black rose on it once a day. I can grow the bush in any soil, but not in water or solid rock. Everyone thought my quirk was useless and I had resigned myself to the General Studies program at UA. In my second-year sports festival I decided to decorate my hair with a black rose to symbolize my quirk. Another general studies student, whose quirk allowed them to secrete a powerful neurotoxin, decided to sabotage the hero course. The staff at UA knew I was planning to study medicine, so I was recruited to help Recovery Girl as she worked to create an antidote to the poison. Sixteen hero course students were in a coma and we were having difficulty developing an antidote that would work given the varying physiologies of the students. As we were hovering over a sample of the poison, one of the petals fell out of the rose in my hair and landed in the petri dish. The substance in the Petri dish interacted with the petal. The poison turned dark purple in color and when Recovery Girl tested it, she discovered that it had changed to an antidote and what's more this antidote worked for all of the students. After further experimentation, we found out that when added to any poison or drug, my rose petals change the substance into its antidote. They offered me the opportunity to transfer into the Hero program, but I decided to finish out my time at UA in general studies and get a degree in Medicine. Once I have completed my degree, I will take the courses that will allow me to apply for a support-hero license so I can work alongside my mentor."
The students stared with rapt attention as she spoke. When she finished, Ingenium stepped forward. "My quirk is Engine. Like my ancestors before me, I have engines in my elbows which allow me to move at a fast rate of speed so I can apprehend criminals and save civilians. We in the hero world believe there is no such thing as a villainous quirk, only villainous intentions. As we go through the week, you are going to meet a series of heroes who will talk about their quirks; some of them have quirks that were labeled as useless, others as villainous. Every one of the people you will meet in the next few days has become or will become a hero. Kumonori-san, would you care to explain today's classroom assignment?"
The spider-like teacher stepped forward again. "If all of the students except for Midoriya-chan and Iida-kun would please line up at the front of the class. Shinso-kun, Nobunaga-kun, I want one of you at either end of the line please." As the students scrambled to line up at the front of the class, she addressed Kiku and Tenya. "Midoriya, Iida, if the two of you could carefully move all of the desks along the walls and clear the space in the middle of the room, please?"
"Hai, sensei." Kiku and Tenya exclaimed simultaneously as they moved to comply with the teacher's commands. Once that was done, the students were directed to sit in a semi-circle in the middle of the room.
"Now, here is how this lesson is going to work. We are going to go around the room and introduce ourselves and our quirk. As each person introduces themselves, we will discuss the abilities and drawbacks of their quirk and how it could be used for hero work or in another job that helps others. I will start." She moved to stand at the front of the semi-circle of students. "My name is Kumonori Madora, my quirk is Spider. As you can tell, it is a mutation quirk. The lower half of my body is that of a spider with some few differences we will not go into at this time. I have a spinneret in the center of my abdomen that allows me to spin a silk-like substance similar to that of a spider. My top half is completely human. Are there any questions?"
Hitoshi raised his hand. "Your quirk is pretty cool. Did you ever want to be a hero?"
"That's an incredibly good question, Shinso-kun. No, everyone always asked me that, but I never really wanted to be a hero. I don't like violence or blood, both of which are common in Heroics. I always wanted to be a teacher."
"Do you work with the support companies?" Kiku spoke up.
"What do you mean?" Kumonori-sensei asked.
"Your spinnerets. Have you ever made spider silk rope for heroes?"
The teacher just stared at her in shock. It had never crossed her mind to use them for that purpose. She'd made silk scarves and things before for homeless shelters, but heroic applications had never occurred to her. "I-I actually never thought of doing that before. Thank you for the idea, I will be sure to check into that." She stammered.
Tensei smiled at the greenette. 'Why does she look so familiar?' he wondered. "That is a great Idea, Midoriya-chan. I will get you in touch with some local support companies, Kumonori-san."
The teacher pointed at Daichi. "Nobunaga-kun, you are next. Come up here and introduce yourself and explain your quirk."
The boy slithered up to take position in front of the semi-circle of students. He was of moderate height with acidic-yellow slitted eyes, a semi-flat nose, forked tongue and the lower half of his body was that of a green and gold snake with a diamond-back pattern on the scales. "My name is Nobunaga Daichi, I am the son of Nobunaga Hokori, the Ambassador to Russia. My quirk is Naga. My body is the lower half of a snake and I have the slitted eyes and forked tongue of a snake and I can spit a mild poison. I can see well in the dark and also see heat signatures with my eyes and I have an enhanced sense of smell due to special holes in my tongue. Someday I am going to be the greatest hero who ever lived." He spoke pridefully, staring down his nose at the other students. There was a bit of shifting and murmuring among the students and finally Kiku spoke up. "Who is your favorite hero?"
Daichi sneered, "why should I tell you, villain?"
"Nobunaga-kun, that is quite enough. Take yourself down to the principal's office now." Kumonori was astounded at the boy's attitude. His parents' holier-than-thou attitude was obviously rubbing off on him. Snatching his school bag from his desk against the wall, he stormed out of the room, Kuno-san subtly following him to make sure he arrived at the office.
Moments later the recess bell rang. "Class you may break for recess, we will resume afterward. Shinso, you are with me. We need to discuss appropriate classroom behavior."
The students filed out to the playground. The area around the swing set was still marked off with caution tape. Kiku hesitated in the doorway, glancing back at Hitoshi. A gentle hand on her shoulder had her turning to meet Kagayaki-chan's gaze. "Come on Midoriya-chan, he'll be okay. Daichi-kun has been asking for a beating for months now. Kumonori-sensei won't go too hard on him." With a nod, Kiku followed her to the playground.

Might Tower, Tokyo…
*BLEEP*
Toshinori glanced up from the report he was filling out regarding the bank robbery he had stopped earlier that morning. Laying down his pen, he scooped up the cell phone sitting at the edge of his desk and unlocked it, clicking on the message icon.
-THE MARVELOUS SHIELD: Rachel and I have set the date of the reunion for the 12th of September. The whole family is coming. Can you make it?
-THE MIGHTY HAMMER: I think so, let me check my calendar. I may be bringing a BIG surprise with me.
-THE MARVELOUS SHIELD: Looking forward to it my friend. Rachel and Melissa send their love.
-THE MIGHTY HAMMER: Give them hugs from me. I will try to clear my calendar and will let you know for sure next week.
Toshinori signed off the chat and clicked over to the new group chat with Aizawa and company.
-THE MIGHTY HAMMER: Can I borrow Kiku for the weekend of the 12th of September?
-CAT MAN: Why? And seriously, The Mighty Hammer?
-THE MIGHTY HAMMER: Hey, don't knock the name. Thor was the best of the Avengers! Anyway, some of my family are having a reunion since one of my cousins is dying. I thought it would be great to have Kiku meet the family, especially since Rachel won't be around much longer.
-RADIO JOCKEY: There shouldn't be a problem. We can let the school know she won't be there. I assume it will be for the whole weekend? Cool handle BTW. I'm a Thor fan myself.
-CAT MAN: …I thought you were over crushing on big blondes, Zashi. Are we in high school again? And by the way SPIDER MAN IS THE MARVEL GOD! Oh, and I have no problem with her going. We should plan to do something fun with Hitoshi that weekend, maybe take him to see your Mothers, we haven't visited since before the children came to stay.
**CAT MAN HAS LEFT THE CHAT**
Toshinori chuckled as he exited the chat and set the phone back down, resuming his paperwork. Those two were always good for a couple of laughs. He sobered for a moment as he thought of David and Rachel. He wondered how little Melissa had taken the news about the cancer. Maybe Kiku would be able to cheer her up.
…A.U.T.H.O.R.S..N.O.T.E…
Welp, father and daughter have officially met, and a new quirk has shown itself. Since Horikoshi-sama has been stubborn enough to not reveal all of the OFA quirks yet, if I get to the point where a new quirk should show up, I will decide what it will be even if it later goes against canon.
Thank you to TodoBakuDeku2108 for their help with names of students and quirks for class 1-C. I am your #1 fan.
