Episode 3 – Part 1

The kids all trailed along, exchanging glances, clearly concerned. Mara walked up ahead, still unable to believe what she had seen.

'I can't believe this, and...Roman of all people, I…' She thought in a fury.

The danger of what was happening, what she had seen, was what truly galled her and she had made sure to get a hold of all the guns, intent on returning them to the armory at once. They'd also need to replace the bullets fired. Now she was leading the kids back towards their homes, not even waiting to see if Roman had followed or was trying to catch up.

"Mom…" Misha said quietly.

He was right alongside her, Ivano on the other side while the other kids trailed behind.

Mara shook her head. "Not now Misha, we'll talk later."
"But-"

"Later." She snapped.

Instantly she regretted it however, seeing the way Misha withdrew into himself. Before she could say anything however, Lydia quickened her pace and took Misha's hand, squeezing it, smiling at him, he seemed to calm down. Mara sighed; this was not how she wanted to do things; but right now, she realized, she was too angry to think straight. Most especially, she was angry at Roman for doing what he had done, for putting the guns in the kids hands, for putting a gun in Misha and Ivano's hands.

She shuddered, trying to put the image out of her mind, luckily she was jolted back to reality by a familiar voice.

"Mara, what-?" It was Zlata.

She stood there, eyes wide, Katia alongside her, wearing a similar expression.

Mara sighed and shook her head. "I just found them all with Roman; near the old warehouse...with these."

She held up the guns.

"Wait, they were…?" Katia gasped. "Kalina, you were shooting a gun?"

Kalina bit his lip but nodded. "I was just, trying to learn to shoot; you know, in case...something happens."

Sergei nodded in agreement, turning to Zlata. "Kalina's right mom. We want to be to able to protect ourselves, that's why we did it."

The others kids all nodded in agreement.

"That may be so but, did any of you know about this?" Mara queried.

Zlata and Katia shook their heads and sighed.

"Well...that is troubling. But still, they really should learn to defend themselves." Zlata remarked.

Katia nodded. "I agree."

"I know that." Mara said. "I'm not saying they shouldn't."

"Of course you aren't." Katia agreed. "But right now, this is all a bit of a shock and emotions are high. Let's just, get everyone home and clam down."

With that she began to leave, Sergei going along with her. Meanwhile Kalina hurried up to Katia's side and they too began to leave, but not before she looked back at Ivano and he met her gaze. Something which Misha noted with a small smile.

Making their way back towards their homes, Mara soon found Christo, Ana, Niko and Arica

"Ah Mara...you found them." Niko said when he saw the kids.

Arica quirked an eyebrow. "Where were you Lydia?"

"You too, Iskra?" Ana asked.

Mara shook her head. "They were over near the old warehouse with Roman...learning to shoot."

"Wait, what?" Christo gasped.

The others all looked startled too.

Iskra bit her lip but Lydia stepped up and nodded.

"Yeah, we were. We asked Roman to teach us, so we could protect ourselves." She explained.

Emboldened by Lydia, Iskra nodded. "Yeah, we asked Roman because he has the most experience when it comes to weapons."

"I see…" Niko sighed. "Yet...you never said anything to any of us."

Mara nodded. "Exactly my point. I get them wanting to be able to defend themselves and I know it's probably for the best they learn how to shoot. But to go behind our back and do things like this…"

Christo turned to the others. "I can see where Mara's coming from; it is...problematic."

Arica looked over towards Roman's house, noted he had finally returned and was heading inside.

"Maybe we should try talking to Roman too, I mean…"

Niko nodded. "I know, but let's not be too hasty. Let things cool off."

The others agreed and so they began heading their separate ways, going home, leaving Mara to finish escorting Misha and Ivano home.

Reaching home Mara sighed and shook her head.

"Mom, I…" Ivano began, Misha not speaking.

Mara sighed and shook her head. "I know, I know. I get it. Really I do; but going behind my back and doing this, boys. That's not...Please, I don't want to talk about it."

It was clear, even as things calmed down that Mara was still angry at Roman. Something which troubled Misha and Ivano greatly, for they had seen it with their own eyes, the lingering looks between the two and now they feared that their hopes might in fact be ruined by this unfortunate incident.
