AN: I hit a road block. I noticed that I was moving Artemis's and Percy's relationship way too fast, so I am thinking of ways to delay that. In the meantime, I reread a lot of this story, and some parts a real cringy. So major rewrite under way, but more on that at the end of the chapter. I will try to keep this story as this story, instead of opening a whole new one that's just a rewrite. But, enjoy this chapter!
Presently:
The lieutenant of Artemis sat on her bed within her tent, with her feet on the adjacent desk. She closed her brown eyes and sighed. As the temporary commander of a group consisting of nearly two dozen rowdy prepubescent or pubescent girls armed to the teeth with knives and bows and the ability to use them, it was a tiring job to ensure peace within their encampment. She wondered how Artemis managed it.
While on the topic of Artemis, she began to wonder where she could be. It has been months since she left, and there has been no sign of of her anywhere. It worried Zoe. She owed Artemis a great deal, for a great many things. Had it not been for the goddess's kindness, she had no doubt that she would have died, or worse, still hung up on …..him. The heartbreak nearly caused Zoe to take her own life, but before she had the chance to, Artemis had come walking into the clearing that Zoe had picked out to be her deathbed and casually offered her a place in a hunting group that Artemis was forming.
Zoe had stared incredulously at the goddess. Artemis had just repeated her question and waited patiently for a response. Zoe was tempted to decline, but somewhere along the way from her brain to her lips, the word "no" changed to a "yes" and she immediately taken under Artemis's wing and would eventually become one of the reasons why the lesser monsters would pale at the very mention of the hunters of Artemis. Artemis had also helped Zoe get over him and later the favor would be returned with the other male who's name was practically forbidden to be said within the hunters.
Over the years it was abundantly clear to Zoe that Artemis was one of the most generous gods on Olympus, second only to Poseidon and Hestia. Although, Hestia could hardly be counted anymore due to her being too nice and giving up her throne to Dionysus. Artemis wouldn't discriminate against her hunters and offered a place within her hunt to any maiden in need. It didn't matter if they were mortal, nymph, demigod or, more rarely, demi-titan. Zoe's only known niece to date was even a part of the hunt at one point, but later died due to complications during the Spanish Inquisition.
And that only made Zoe respect Artemis even more. She would often proclaim that she would follow Artemis to the ends of the earth, and she often did just that. In return, Artemis gave Zoe her full blessing, effectively making Zoe one of her life sources. They were closer than sisters and trusted each other immensely. They were so close in fact, that on one visit to Olympus, Aphrodite remarked that it was great to see the Artemis had finally found love. That made both huntress's blush, but both knew that a relationship wasn't possible between them, as Artemis was remarkably straight, and although Zoe had a minor crush early in her career of lieutenant, she quickly got over her feelings for the goddess.
Zoe's was yanked out of her thoughts by a shriek near the hunters dining tent. She quickly stood up and walked to her door and was tackled by someone before she could take a step out of her tent. Quicker than the human eye could see, Zoe whipped out her knife that hung from her hip and held it at the throat of whoever had bowled over her. As soon as she saw who it was however, she sheathed her knife and stood up.
"Gods of Olympus Phoebe! Don't do that, I nearly killed you" She scolded lightly. As a daughter of Apollo, Phoebe wasn't taught the finer points of politeness, such as knocking.
"Sorry Zoe. It won't happen again, but we have a problem at the dining table. Atlanta insulted Marie's intelligence and it was about to get physical before I left to get you." Phoebe said quickly:
Zoe sighed. Atlanta was a daughter of Ares, so she was very brash and tactless. That often-caused problems within the hunt, because she would announce her opinion on people, places or things without anyone having asked. Though this was nothing new, as Atlanta was one of the oldest hunters, so most of the others just held their tongues. The other hunter, Marie, was a daughter of Athena and prided her brains over her brawn. In fact, she was probably one of the proudest daughters of Athena in the last century. She was also one of the newest hunters, so was not used to Atlanta's brand of brashness. So it was no real mystery why the two were fighting.
Phoebe and Zoe rushed over to the food tent and stepped in. The scene inside was not a pretty one. The two hunters were fighting in the middle of the tent, but the only evidence for that fact was the two blurs and shrieking, shouting, or yelling of curses and insults at each other. The other hunters were stood on the sides of the tent and watched the whole thing unfold before them with varying expressions. The older hunters were simply rolling their eyes while the newer hunter stood with jaws dropped and eyes wide.
"STOP" Zoe roared. Her voice held so much steel in it that even Phoebe stiffened, even though she was standing behind Zoe. But it got the point across, as the two hunters stopped trying to impale each other and looked nervously at Zoe
"Would somebody tell me just what the hades is going on here?" She said calmly before raising her voice at the end of her sentence. There were many reasons why Zoe remained the Lieutenant of the hunters, and one of them was that when she was pissed, she could make Zeus cower in fear.
"W.. Well, Lieutenant, we were just-"Atlanta started before being interrupted.
"If thy lie to me I will put thee on cleaning duty until thou are old and grey." Zoe threatened.
"It's her fault! She started it lieutenant!" Marie broke in. Clearly, she thought that Zoe was easily swayed, but that was not the case. Zoe stubbornness was renowned among the older hunters, second only the Artemis herself. But Marie was a newer hunter, so she wasn't aware of that fact.
"I do not care who started it, as I am ending it! Clearly, I cannot expect a definitive answer from anyone, so I will compromise. Both of thou will follow Elizabeth outside for some corrective action. The rest of thee, go back to thy gods damned duties! This isn't a TV show! We have work to do" Zoe bellowed.
Quickly the hunters rushed out of the tent. They didn't want to anger the already annoyed lieutenant anymore by accident. As they ran to do various tasks around their camp, Zoe walked back to her tent and lay back onto her bed. Sometimes, Zoe wished that Artemis would immortalize the hunters when they were of age. It certainly would help the childish disputes that plagued the hunters for millennia.
But on the other hand, Zoe was glad for it. Because it was proof that the hunters had no real problems. They were family, and family only really were without disputes when something traumatic issues that they would argue about years later.
As she lay looking up at her ceiling, she remembered that Artemis had ordered her to take the hunters into town someday as a rest. Going into a city was a treat for the hunters, because they lived off the land most of the time. So that left little time for typical teenager things like going shopping or watching movies.
She sighed, before getting up again and cursing the impossibility of getting a few quiet minutes in her job. She walked out of her tent and started in the direction of the dining tent once again. Though it was mainly used for dining, it was often also a place for the hunters to congregate and talk about different topics. As she walked, she heard Elizabeth barking out orders to the two misbehaving hunters, and she smiled in satisfaction. Not that she enjoyed the girls under her command suffering, but she did enjoy troublemakers getting punished. And she knew that the other daughter of Apollo would punish the offending troublemakers correctly.
When she walked into the dining tent, the few hunters that were seated there stiffened at her approach. The were clearly still unsure of their superior's mood, and they certainly didn't want to join Marie and Atlanta outside, sweating under the noon day sun from doing so much physical exercise.
"At ease girls" Zoe said as she walked in. She was thoroughly amused at the girls reaction. She walked over to a horn that stood in a corner and blew it four times. This horn was a way to summon the hunt, and the four blasts were a pre-arranged signal. A single blast would have meant that a hunter was in a life-or-death situation, two blasts meant that invaders had gotten into their encampment and they were to gather in a defensible position, three blasts meant that they were being attacked, and four blast was simply a way to gather the hunters quickly.
Pretty soon every hunter ran at top speed to the dining table and sat in one of the six table that stood within it. They all looked expectantly up at Zoe, who stood at the head of the table that sat facing the other five.
"We did good hunting these past days ladies, and per milady's request, we are going into town today. So get dressed, and be ready to move out." Zoe ordered.
Instantly, the hunters exploded with noise. Some girls were chatting excitedly about clothes, others were discussing music stores, some were even talking about the baseball game that was planned that day. Zoe smiled at the reaction from her subordinates. She may have to be tough on them once in a while, but they were still as close to her sisters as they could get without being a one of the Hesperides.
They quickly filed out, dressed in their best and jogged to the nearest city. They gathered at the town common and split into groups. The majority were to go down to the nearest mall, while some chose to go to the previously mentioned baseball game, and Zoe, Phoebe, Atlanta and Elizabeth went to the local planetarium.
Zoe smiled at the hunters as they cut through the city crowds. If any males saw them, they would never recognise them as the no nonsense Hunters of Artemis. But after so many centuries, Zoe knew that girls would be girls, no matter how many things they've killed or how long they've lived.
"Hey! You coming Zoe?" Phoebe shouted. Zoe quickly caught up to the three other girls and they walked into the planetarium and gazed at the stars, all thoughts of gods, demigods or monsters gone from their minds as they talked, quarrelled, and teased just like sisters should.
AN: Yeah so, I really need to rewrite about 50% of this story. I don't know exactly where or what will be on the chopping block, but it will be quite a lot. It will be explained in more detail in the next chapter. But I will say this for now, the end of chapter 7 will get a rewrite, chapter 8 will most likely be delayed by at least 2-3 chapters. I'm sorry if it gets real confusing the next couple days, but I want to make this story as entertaining as possible. And a lot of stuff here is just….yeah
Anyway, that's it from me today, and tomorrow the explanation of me going through this whole story will be out.
