Chapter 08: Angels: That's What They're Called
Part I: Day One
If it were only him, he couldn't be bothered at all. Sleeping in this warm morning with no distractions of neither yesterday nor tomorrow. He won't be caring at all; no. Be it earthquakes or fires or another rapture shaking this sleep. However, he just could not pretend that this current moment does not exist. He never pegged himself as a romantic but – oh well! This was probably the first time that he has liked the seventh day. He'll probably start liking Sundays more as long as this will not stop or be taken away from him.
The early morning light was still soft outside as he finally opens his eyes after pulling closer to him the person that was still sleeping. Snoring softly and undisturbed. He lets out a chortle and pushes away the strand of hair covering her face. He was kind of having thoughts of waking her up now just to see those eyes stare back at him. But he lets on. He also wants to take this moment longer and engrave every detail in his memory. The horrors of the events from the other day, though still fresh, he wants to keep them at bay.
Far from her.
She stirs slowly from her slumber when he sits up beside her to watch her properly and another soft laughter escapes from his mouth. This is too much on a Sunday morning.
Surprisingly, despite his records when it comes to women in the same room with him, they actually just slept. Completely dressed at that! Surrendering to the dawn. Snoring till the morning. For him, the exhaustion of worrying has taken over. He did not even bother to touch a drop. To her, sleep came finally hours after him since she wants to be sure that he won't be leaving again.
As Lucifer was musing at her, he finds himself in a short shock when Chloe suddenly opens her eyes followed by sitting up as if she left the pancakes on the stove burning during Monday morning rush hour. Her eyes seemed to wander here and there at first. Her breathing increasing rapidly. Realizing what was happening, he gently calls to her while sitting up himself. Holding her hands and rubbing a spot behind her palm. While his other arm encircles her.
"I am here. It's okay. You are safe." He whispers beside her temple. Calming her down.
Chloe responds with a nod and hugs him.
After a short while, she whispers a thank you.
But there are still matters that needed to be attended to. Chloe then switches to her default setting and looks at Lucifer's eyes.
Maybe a kiss can wait.

They decided to regroup at the penthouse after doing some errands of their own.
It's almost evening now.
After several careful planning, placing strategies and Plan B, and Plan C, and Plan D; because Lucifer does not want to end in B, they were able to find a way to temporarily remove the mark within Chloe's soul.
Azrael, ever the ingenious one, found a way around the mark removal.
"Funny as it may sound, there is a high possibility of it working though there are zero precedencies related to Chloe's case," she explains. Eyeing everyone in the room.
Lucifer, though, raises an eyebrow.
"Look, Brother. Even your demons below cannot provide a good lead. Even if you did catch the Demon-rider, obliterating him will not be enough as you are basically hiding here yourself." She did not forget to raise her fingers to gesture quotation marks to avoid a glare from his brother.
"She is right." Supplies Amenadiel.
"At this moment, we cannot afford a full-on rebellion unless we can actually round all of them."
"Dromos had quite the following, indeed." Lucifer exhales.
"So, you agree?" Azrael follows.
He gives a nod at the room. Maze giving off a peculiar smile
"Okay, so what's is it then?" Asks Chloe.
"No, for the tenth time, just NO!" Lucifer reiterates as he helms his annoyance at the plan. His hair was a bit disheveled now.
"I thought you already agreed?" Chloe responds to him.
"Look, Detective. I cannot allow for you to do another round of having your soul partially severed from your body." He says simply as he remembered the scene when she had woken up earlier that day.
Of course, he cannot allow it the second time. She may not admit or realize it, she is actually feeling the effects of her disembodiment. Physically, mentally, and even in her soul. He even felt it. He knows it. He has seen it from the many years he spent down below since he started reigning. The difference is, she is currently stubborn enough to process it.
"I will find a…. uh, less taxing way." He supplies. "However, our initial security placements will still be in action until I will be able to find a way out of this. Yes?"
The rest of the attendees stood or flew out their separate ways after reaffirming their strategies. The night is getting deeper.
"I need to walk for a while." Chloe exhales and moves to the elevator. Lucifer notices and counts a while until he hears the noise coming off from the elevator stop.
Instead of heading straight out of the Lux, she decides to sit by the bar. The place was quiet as it was closed down since they had returned from their short trip. Looking around the counter, she spots a bottle and decides to grab it to pour herself one. She places the glass in front of her then holds her temple with both hands. She just realized she was so tired. She sighs again seeing the reflection of her face from the surface of her liquor.
She closes her eyes for a while.
"Are you going to have that?" Lucifer begins.
She looks up at him. Not surprised at all. But something wants to be let out of her throat.
He sits beside her and turns his stool to face her.
"You want to say something?" No smirk was seen, unlike his usual jest and teasing.
"I don't understand." She opens.
"Why did you not agree this time? It could also work since now that your sister could navigate it to fit my status?" She is so tired.
"You are pissed. I can see that."
"No, don't bring that here. Why can't you trust her? Don't you trust me?"
His eyes widened at that but he quickly changed his composure remembering that she did not mean it.
"I am not saying that it was not foolproof. However, when I said it was taxing, I meant for your part. You need to recognize that you are in a state of trauma." He responds in an assuring tone.
"Trauma? What trauma?"
"And you're denying it!"
"What do you mean?"
"Look, though if you were to talk to Dr. Linda, she will provide you with the same diagnosis though there might be a hit and miss part." He begins. "You are currently experiencing trauma, Chloe. The worst one at that." He proceeds to grab the glass in front of her and downs it.
Chloe looks at him in disbelief after he puts it back down the counter. Seeing her reaction, he pours her another one and replaces the glass near her.
She stares at him still.
So, he gestures at the glass.
After placing the glass inverted between them. She then gives him another stare.
"Stubborn." He chuckles.
"You have been severed from your body for quite a long time." Seeing that Chloe was ready to respond, he raises his right pointy finger. To which, Chloe listens.
"Remember, time works differently there. The numbers below vary for an hour or a day here above. The theory stands still for humans and the human who proposed it." He continues. "That long exposure is dragging your body weary. I think you are noticing the signs now. Despite you being asleep most of the day, you still felt heavy. Tired. I believe breathing is sometimes unbearable too, especially when you are alone."
He notices Chloe starting to sweat on her temple. He can also see the dilation of her pupils. He grabs her hands to help her calm down.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I just want you to be informed of what is currently happening in your body and I think I need to stop there."
Chloe stares at his eyes intently.
"That is why I do not want you to proceed with the ritual." He then proceeds to tuck a strand of hair behind her ears. "I think it's time for you to retire for the night."
Chloe, teary-eyed, then moves forward and grabs him for a hug. She seemed forceful. She needed it. She needs to feel that she is anchored. She also thought that she might have grabbed too hard that she can feel her left clavicle hitting Lucifer's chin. Regardless, Lucifer gently accepts.
"I swear I have been feeling floaty since I woke up!" She whispers at the area between his neck and shoulder.
Lucifer hugs her tighter in response.
"I am here." He says as a form for assurance. They both let go of the hug and proceeded to lean on each other's forehead. They stayed like that for a little longer. Finding peace in each other's vicinity until they were contented and they sat back on their respective stools.
"I know you are a capable woman, but I would like you to know that I will keep you safe as long as I am here. You can be at eas –" He was unable to finish as Chloe grabs him for a kiss to which he responds with an intensity of his own.
Granting each other's desire.
