Chapter 9

Callie and Frank did go back to school the next day. They drove Callie's car. Callie was checking her reflection. She had been able to hide the facial bruises under some makeup. To cover her neck bruises she wore a cream turtleneck sweater, she wore dark brown leggings, a brown skirt, and brown tall boots.

Callie had a flashback memory of her and her mother. They had bought matching outfits and wore them for a special mother daughter photo shoot. Callie would have to find a way to get those photos. They had gone to the beach, to city hall, and in their rose garden. She also had some mementos from vacations she had taken with her mom.

"Frank, there's some personal things I want to get from the house."

Frank turned into the school. "I'll see if dad and Sam can take us there today. We'll call the police to come help us get your property. Robert should have removed his items by now. But I'm not taking any chances." Frank fretted. "Remember if you feel dizzy due to the concussion sit down."

"I will. Besides you'll be there to catch me."

Frank smiled. "True enough. We can turn in our assignments as we go through the day." After the family meeting he and Callie had hunkered down and finished their assignments. They headed to AP english and turned in both assignments to Mr. Haverty.

"Well you two didn't waste any time. How are you feeling Callie?"

"I feel better. I'm still a little shaky."

"I'm so sorry about your mother dear."

"Thank you."

They took their seats and began their discussion of McBeth. Before they knew it it was lunch time. Callie opened her lunch and smiled at the turkey sandwich on wheat bread, the red grapes, and pretzels. She also had a small bottle of water. Frank's lunch was exactly the same. They sat down to eat and Chet Morton and Phil Cohen came over with their lunches from the lunch line. "Hey guys good to see you."

Frank shook his hand. "You too Phil. How was computer science the two days I was out. I completed the assignments in less than five minutes."

"It was easy sauce man. If this is advanced I'm sad."

"Callie can I talk to you?"

Callie turned and saw Rick. "Hey Rick! Sure sit down. Where is Ginny?"

"She's getting our lunches. Look, I'm sorry about what my mom did. I still can't believe it."

Callie patted his arm. "You have nothing to apologize for brother."

Patrick's eyes widened. "You know?"

"Yes...don't worry about your mom or my dad. They aren't worth fretting over,"

Chet scratched his head. "I'm confused."

Callie laughed. "Sorry Chet. You see his mom and my dad have been involved ever since high school. Rick is my dad's biological son. They manipulated my mom and Mr. Reed. They wanted access to my mom's money."

Phil's face darkened. "That's terrible. I heard on the police scanner that a domestic dispute occurred at your house Friday night."

Callie moved her turtleneck to the side. "I'll say."

Chet, Phil, Patrick, and Ginny all gasped. Ginny hissed. "You're lucky he didn't kill you. Is that why you were in ICU?"

"Yes for three days, then one more on med surg."

"So what did his mom do?" Phil asked.

Patrick growled, looked at Callie for permission, got her nod then answered. "Instead of giving her a depo shot he gave her a shot to make her ovulate."

Phil and Chet both paled and said. "Oh shit!"

Callie chuckled. "That's about what I said."

Frank smiling shook his head. "Actually you had shrieked and I said to remember your voice box and you said. 'Fuck my voice box and asked poor Dr. Anderson if you were pregnant and he confirmed."

Ginny covered her mouth. "Oh my gosh! What an awful mistake now a baby."

Frank rolled his eyes. "Actually we are pretty sure she did that under the instruction of Callie's father."

The friends chatted through the rest of lunch and Callie and Frank made it through the end of the day.

Joe and Vanessa came up to them. "Hey you too." Vanessa said.

Callie hugged her. "Hey Van."

"I want to go to a movie tonight, want to come with us?"

Callie shook her head. "No, we have a lot of homework today."

Joe opened the van which was next to Callie's car. Frank suddenly cried out. "You vicious punk!"

Joe turned and saw Frank wrench open the back door of Callie's car and physically pull a man out of it. Joe saw a syringe in his hand. He grabbed that wrist before the man could jab his brother in the neck. Joe twisted and the man dropped it. "Van, Callie go get officer Heinz!"

Frank hissed. "What are you doing in my girlfriends car? Answer me you asshole?"

A small crowd had gathered. Rick plowed his way to the front and rushed over and held the man's other arm against the car. "You bastard!"

"I...I was just going to rob her. Let me go!"

Frank didn't believe this man for a second. "Yeah right."

Vanessa and Callie came back with Officer Heinz. "What's going on Frank?"

"This asshole was crouched down behind the drivers side of Callie's vehicle."

"How'd you get into the car sir?" The officer asked as she cuffed him. "Anything sharp?"

"I have a second syringe of valium in my left jacket pocket."

"Where'd you get the drugs sir?"

"I want a lawyer." He muttered.

"You're under arrest for two counts of having a controlled substance, two counts of drug paraphernalia, trespassing, and breaking in entering. Is this a key to your car Ms. Shaw?"

Frank took it from Officer Heinz. "Looks like it. He tried it in the lock. "Yep. You got the key from her dad. That is the only place you could have gotten it."

"Lawyer."

Frank nodded. "Well that is the smartest thing you've done today."

Callie was trembling beside Vanessa. "Frank."

Frank turned and rushed to her side. "It's okay honey."

"No it isn't. He's still trying to get me!"

"Shh." Frank soothed. He helped her into the car and they went to the house. Fenton was in the driveway with his gun out. Con just called me about the asshole in the car. The detectives are getting nothing out of him."

"Dad, this is crazy. It has to be her…" A car pulled up in the driveway blocking Callie's car. It was Robert Shaw.

Robert Shaw boomed. "Callie get in this car right now."

Callie whimpered. Frank simply took her gently by the arms and guided her into the house.

"Get back here!"

Fenton Hardy boomed pointing his gun at Mr. Shaw. "You are violating your order of protection Robert."

"She is my daughter."

"She is, but she is eighteen and can decide where she wants to go. It's not with you. Haven't you hurt her enough?"

"Get her out here Fenton. She is coming with me to Washington."

"Robert, she isn't going anywhere. Get off my property or I'm calling the police and you will be put behind bars until your trial."

Robert raised his fist at Fenton. "You're going to pay for your involvement in this Fenton." He got into his car and left just as Joe pulled up to the curb.

Joe jumped out of the car. "Was that who I thought it was?"

"Robert Shaw wanting to take Callie to Washington DC."

"Like we're going to let him take her."

Fenton finally lowered his weapon. "Exactly, but he is starting to get desperate and that makes him more dangerous."
