Chapter 10
Just an FYI– Italics are for either a dream, or a memory with Wanda.
Trigger warnings – War scene, talk of trauma and use of weapons
Bucky stood alone in the canteen, he'd poured the freshly made coffee into two mugs and was getting ready to take them back to the office. He'd been away for no more than ten minutes and he was already loosing his mind wondering if she was okay. "Mr Barnes" A feminine voice called out making him loose his train of thought. Bucky turned to see his therapist stood behind him.
He smiled awkwardly "Doctor... Hey I'm sorry for not callin' I've been-" He trailed off not really knowing what to say.
"Busy? I see that" She said with a smile.
"Can we talk?" Bucky asked wondering weather or not she was leaving for the night, it was awfully late and he didn't want to keep her.
She smiled at him "Of course, there is always time to talk. Shall we sit?" she asked gesturing to a table next to them. Bucky nodded and set the coffees down on the table. "What's on your mind?" She asked.
"Nothin'" He began he frowned at his lie and she smiled, it was typical Bucky to not open up even if he is the one that asked to speak. "Sorry I mean.. I am feeling, overwhelmed?" His said making his choice of word sound almost like a question. She nodded happy he had used a word to describe his emotions.
"Good choice of words, do you want to elaborate on that?" She asked trying not to sound to pushy, Bucky nodded slowly.
He sighed. "I don't know what I feel. It feel irrational" He mumbled.
"How so?" She asked cocking her head to the side.
Bucky ran his hand through his hair and tried to fight back the urge to yawn, he was so tired. He wondered if he should tell her what he felt inside, if it was safe to say it out loud, he was so tired and confused. "Doc I have to be careful what I say I know you report back to Fury" Bucky said in a tired voice.
She smiled softly at him "Only about your willingness to open up and how I personally think you are progressing nothing personal. Mr Barnes there is such thing as doctor patient confidentiality" She reminded him. Bucky wondered how much that rule extended.
He placed his elbows on the table in front of him and rested his chin on his hands. "So if I confess something you couldn't tell?" He asked.
She furrowed her brow at the question and let out a little sigh. "Just tell me how you feel, don't think of it as a confession but more a feeling you have at this moment in time" She told him.
"I want to kill Tom Decker" He said quickly blurting out his confession.
She wasn't phased by the comment, she had worked with a lot of people in the past and a lot of murderers, she had read Tom Deckers profile with Fury and knew he wasn't a nice man. "Because of the crimes he's committed?" She asked.
Bucky shook his head. "Not at first, that does come into but no .. I want to kill Decker for what he has done to Lucky. It's irrational usually I don't have a reason for wanting a bad person dead other than the fact they are a bad person. It feels-" Bucky trailed off again not knowing what word to use.
She smiled. "Personal?" she offered.
He looked at her and gave her a little smile for understanding him. "Yes. I don't know why" He told her.
"You seem to have formed a bond with this girl. And she has formed one with you" she told him, he smiled a little.
"You saw her?" He asked.
She nodded. "I met her briefly, gave her an examination" She explained.
Bucky smiled. "How is she did she say anything?" He asked. He was still mad at the fact that since they took her this morning he hadn't been allowed to see her, he just wanted to know she was okay.
"Doctor patient confidentiality" She reminded him.
"Right" he said with a pout on his face.
"Mr Barnes, today you have opened up more than you ever have in a session and I do think it is to do with the girl. This is progress and I am so glad to see you finally explaining how you feel. I do worry though" She explained with a slightly concerned look on her face.
Bucky looked confused. "About what?" He asked blankly.
She pressed her lips together "Are you more concerned about Lucky than you are yourself?" She asked.
Bucky immediately frowned. "No?" He said quickly, she gave him an 'are you sure' look and he sighed "I mean I care and I don't want to see her hurt. It's not a bad thing caring about someone Doc.. It's not a medical issue or something going on in my head, it's human emotion and I have a right to feel protective... she's my friend" He told her trying not to sound to argumentative, after all it was her job to ask.
She smiled at him "Of course" she said softly. She got up from her seat and held her hand out to shake his, he took it. "Thank you for talking with me, glad to see you safe and back home" She told him as she pulled her hand away.
Bucky smiled warmly at her "Thanks Doc" He said in a grateful tone. She gave him one last smile before walking away leaving him alone in the canteen.
At some point he'd drifted off, he hadn't meant to but the lack of sleep had finally caught up with him. His dream was different this time, No Tony Stark calling him a murderer and no innocent dead body's of his victims surrounding him. No tonight's dream was different.
Tom Decker looked up from his computer screen and frowned at the man in front of him. Bucky stood facing him dressed in all black, his black jacket had the left sleeve ripped off exposing his black and gold arm. "Who are you?" Tom asked standing from his chair.
"The Winter Soldier" He said in a deep voice.
The mans eyes widened but he tried his best to keep his composure. "You look different" He said looking the man up and down.
Bucky smiled lightly. "But I'm not different, I'm still the Winter Soldier" He told him taking a step closer to the man behind the desk.
Tom stepped back until his back met the wall behind him. "Why are you here?" He asked in a loud voice hoping someone would hear him.
Bucky smirked darkly and continued to walk forward. "Don't pretend you don't know. You hurt someone I care about, you hurt her a lot. And now... I am going to hurt you" He said as he reached for the desk. With one swift push the desk containing Toms computer and work was thrown to the side of the room so there was nothing in-between them.
The man cowered and slid down the wall, Bucky smiled and looked at him with blood thirsty eyes. "Please don't do this, you don't have to do this" The man begged.
Bucky knelt down in front of the shaking man. "I'm sure she begged" He said quietly pausing for a few seconds. "but you didn't listen so why should I?" He asked, his smirk turned into a grin as the man began to sob.
Tom covered his face with his hands. "Please I'm sorry" He begged. "Please I'll do anything" He pleaded for his life and Bucky just watched with a grin on his face soaking up every seconds of it. The man dared to look up into the eyes of the Winter Soldier. "I'll leave her alone you'll never hear from me ever again" He promised.
Bucky tried to suppress another smile. He shook his head slowly. "I'd much rather do this" Suddenly he gripped the man with his metal arm and lifted him from the ground and...
"Bucky" Sam yelled punching his friend in the arm. Bucky's eyes shot open and he ungracefully slipped of the chair he'd been sleeping on. He hit the floor with a thud.
"What?" he asked in a shocked voice scrambling to stand back up.
Sam shook his head and looked at him with pity, usually he'd laugh but Bucky looked like a mess, he had dark circles around his eyes from lack of sleep. "Jesus man go home, you're exhausted" He told him. Bucky blinked harshly and yawned his eyes still adjusting to the bright lights. "She's awake by the way, we think she had a small nightmare but she didn't wake up. There was a lot of brain activity on the monitor but she says she doesn't remember dreaming" Sam offered the information before Bucky asked for it, Bucky immediately felt more awake at the mention of her.
"Where is she now?" He asked.
"Apartment block" Sam answered.
Bucky frowned. "Our apartment block?" He asked in disbelief "That place isn't safe any more HYDRA know about it" He began to stress.
Sam shook his head "We've all been moved it seems" He told him, Bucky instantly calmed down. At least she was safe he thought to himself. "All on the same floor too" Sam added, Bucky nodded liking the idea of everyone being on the same floor, more people to keep an eye on her. "Agent Hill took her earlier. Come on man let's get you some coffee and we can head there, then maybe you can get some real sleep" Sam lectured as he patted Bucky on the shoulder and lead him toward the exit of the building.
Sam showed Bucky to the new apartment block. Sensing that he and Lucky might want to talk given how close they have become Sam decided to head back to his own apartment. Bucky carried on down the hall searching for her room number Sam had given him. He saw agent Hill exiting one of the apartments, he smiled and nodded at her.
"Agent" He greeted.
She smiled at the tired looking man, ignoring the urge to make a comment about when was the last time he'd shaved. "Mr Barnes, have you been to your new place yet?" She asked attempting to make small talk.
"No not yet" He told her with a shrug.
She pressed her lips together in a firm line, she knew Bucky had never been much of a talker. "Well you don't have much unpacking to do. You don't have a lot of things not like Sam anyway, he had a whole truck and a half to move his crap outta his apartment" She babbled.
Bucky laughed lightly and nodded in agreement that Sam had a lot of stuff. "Hoarding never was a hobby of mine" He told her.
She smiled and paused for a second knowing the real reason he was stood speaking to her. "Lucky is settled into her new place and she has been asking for you" She told him. Bucky held back the urge to smile knowing she'd been asking for him.
"How was she this morning?" He asked trying to sound causal.
Agent Hill pulled a little face and bobbed her head around a little. "She's nervous but I don't blame her. What ever they did to her … Well you know" She trailed of.
"Yeah I do" He mumbled knowing exactly what she meant.
"She needs a friend, and so do you. I think no two people could support each other better than you two can" Agent Hill said in a positive voice offering him a smile to lighten the mood.
He nodded. "I'm trying" He said quietly.
"Good. Well I need to go, SHIELD stuff you know how it is... Oh and Wanda will be here in like thirty minutes for her session with Lucky so you might wanna let Lucky know what she is in for today" Agent hill told him as she began to walk backwards down the hall.
Bucky couldn't help but smile. "Barer of bad news, awesome" He said in a sarcastic tone.
She laughed. "You're always so fun to be around" She joked referring to his broody nature. "Later Bucky" She said with a wave before fully turning around and strutting down the hall.
"Bye Agent" He called after her.
He turned and looked at the room, number 10 this was the right one according to the scrap of paper Sam had given him. He cleared his throat and knocked twice on the door. "It's me … Bucky" He shouted, there was a silence from inside the room. "Barnes?" He called out, He frowned and mentally slapped himself for being so awkward.
Suddenly the door opened and Lucky was stood on the other side. She was wearing black shorts and a pale blue T-shirt, her hair was tied in a tiny bun and sat on top of her hair. She stood smirking at the giant man "It's only been a day I didn't forget you, you know" She joked.
Bucky noticed her eyes where a little puffy, a sign she'd been crying again. "Are you okay?" He asked.
She gulped and shrugged still holding onto the door. "I've been better" She admitted. "Come in" she said as she let go of the door pushing it open all the way. Bucky entered her home and looked around, it was very similar to the last set of apartments they had lived in, nicely decorated and spacious.
He stood in the middle of the living room and glanced around. "Nice place" He commented.
She laughed and closed the door following him in to the apartment. She walked over to the sofa and threw her self down on it. "I'm pretty sure yours is identical" She said tapping the sofa next to her gesturing for him to sit down, he did "How have you been?" She asked.
"Good" He answered.
She nodded and pressed her lips together in a firm line. "Good" She mumbled. She didn't know why it felt like there was tension between them but there was.
Bucky felt it too, he had spent the past 24 hours wanting to see her and make sure she was okay and now he was here sat next to her he had no idea what to talk about. "So last night" He began.
She glared at him "I don't remember dreaming if that's why you're here. Did they send you or something thinking I'd tell the truth if it was you?" She asked in an accusing tone, he regretted his choice of words.
"No. Lucky I'm not here for information I am here to see if you're alright, I'm your friend remember" He told her, her eyes softened slightly, she was on edge she didn't fully trust SHIELD yet and Bucky knew it. "I'm just... Here for you that's all" He reassured her, she attempted to smile at him but couldn't seem to pull it off.
"I missed you last night, they wouldn't let me see you" She said quietly.
Bucky gritted his teeth and took a deep breath. He didn't realise she'd been asking for him, if he knew he would of made more of an effort to see her. "I was there" He told her. She looked up in confusion "Watching on the monitor" He added helping her to understand. She narrowed her eyes at him. "Not in a weird way in like a..." He trailed off when she started to smile. "Not a weird way" He said again mentally screaming at himself to stop talking.
She giggled. "A one hundred year old man watching a twenty five year old sleep, old pervert" She joked.
Bucky covered his face with his hands and let out a little laugh. "Oh my god".
She smiled a big tooth smile at his reaction. "Did you miss me?" She asked in a happier tone.
Bucky dropped his hands from his face, he felt the blush in his cheeks fading. "No" He joked, she laughed and slapped his human arm. "Yes, I missed not having anything thrown at me" He added with a smiled.
She laughed again causing Bucky to do the same, her laugh was contagious. "I thought you would of missed that, last night as I was falling asleep I was thinking I bet no one has thrown anything at Bucky tonight" She joked.
Bucky pulled a face. "Well I think Sam was close" He told her.
"Good" She joked again.
He was happy to see her smiling he hadn't seen her smile in what felt like forever, what with the dreams and then bringing her to SHIELD he wasn't sure if she'd ever smile again. "So I passed Agent Hill on the way here" He began making conversation.
Lucky nodded and smiled. "I like her she is nice... could probably kill a man with her bare hands but nice" She commented.
"She is and I think she can.. She said Wanda was coming today to help you" he said.
Lucky raised an eye brow at the mention of the woman. "Wanda? Is she like a therapist or something?" She asked with a nervous laugh.
Bucky smiled and cocked his head, she was probably going to find the next part crazy. "They call her the Scarlett Witch" He told her, she stopped herself laughing as she stared at him in utter confusion. "She has special powers to put it simply. She can manipulate reality and is telekinetic. She is going to try and get into your head and try to help you remember" He told her. Lucky's face fell, she couldn't believe he was actually being serious. She knew the world wasn't all it seemed but a Witch?.
"How?" She asked simply.
Bucky shifted in his seat remembering his own sessions with Wanda when he first arrived here. "Well with me she … She took me back" He admitted trying not to think to much into the horrid memory.
She cocked her head. "Took you back where?" She asked.
Bucky paused for a second. "To the war … To the moment I fell from the train, and then she took me back to HYDRA" He said choosing to look away from her as he spoke. She was silent for a minute, he didn't dare look at her he didn't think he could handle seeing her sad again.
"Bucky" She whispered breaking the silence.
Bucky stared at the floor as he spoke. "I will stay if you want me too" He said quietly.
Lucky nodded and scooted a little closer to him. She lent forward and rested her head on his shoulder. "Please don't leave me" She whispered. Bucky was shocked with the contact and instantly wrapped his arm around her making her feel safe. She closed her eyes and allowed him to hold her like that.
"I won't. You will be fine okay I'll be here every step of the way" He told her. She didn't speak she just lent on him allowing herself to feel safe in his arm.
They both jumped when they heard someone clearing their throat. "Am i interrupting?" A feminine voice asked. Lucky sat up strait and Bucky stood up from the sofa, the pair of them acting like a pair of teenagers who'd been caught making out by their parents.
Lucky smiled. "No" She reassured the slender woman in front of her. She jumped up from the sofa and held her hand out. "You must be Wanda" She said with a smile. She looked the girl up and down as they shook hands, she was dressed in skinny jeans and a long red shirt, her brown hair was beautifully straight. Lucky smiled. "You're so young and pretty" She complimented.
Wanda laughed. "Thank you, you don't look like a Sergeant" She commented back looking Lucky up and down.
She smiled and nodded. "I'm hearing that a lot lately" She admitted.
"I gave her the run down of what it is you do" Bucky chirped up.
She smiled and looked over at Lucky "Did he make me sound awesome and powerful?" she asked, Lucky nodded and Wanda let out a little laugh. "Good, I'll take it from here" She said nodding over to Bucky's direction.
"I'm staying" He said quickly.
Wanda pressed her lips into a firm line and nodded. "Okay" she said quickly looking back to Lucky who nodded letting her know it was ok. "Lucky do you want to get comfortable" Wanda said gesturing her hands toward the sofa, Lucky nodded and sat back in her seat leaning with one arm on the arm rest. "You too" Wanda mumbled to Bucky. He frowned wondering why he also had to be seated but did as he was told anyway. Once everyone was seated Wanda pulled up a chair and sat across from the duo. "Okay everyone needs to close there eyes and only open them when I say so, got it?" She asked looking at the both of them.
Bucky gulped knowing now he was going with Lucky into her memory. Lucky nodded and quickly took Bucky's hand in her own as fear began to wash over her "Yes" She said in an unconvincing voice.
"Okay Lucky, think about your last memory in the war, the one you dream about. Bucky and I will come with you but we can not get involved in anything we see or hear. No one else will see us but you, You're going back as yourself and everything that has happened in the past will happen, you'll re live it" Wanda explained.
Lucky opened her eyes and shook her head. "I don't know if I can" She whispered, she felt Bucky's grip on her hand tighten and gently stroked her hand with his thumb, it offered her slight comfort knowing he would be by her side.
Wanda lent forward and touched her knee to help sooth her. "Close your eyes" she said calmly, Lucky nodded and clamped her eyes shut.
"Open" Wanda whispered.
The three of them stood in the war zone that Lucky dreamt of that night, everything was the same as Lucky remembered.
Wanda focused on watching Lucky and her movements, Bucky looked around their surroundings and let out a little gasp at the amount of men shooting at her. Lucky stood still for a few seconds until she realised where she was standing. "Jones is about too..." she cut her self off and turned around to see the young soldier running towards her, her eyes widened knowing what was going to happen next. "Jones!" She screamed right before the explosion knocked her, Bucky and Wanda to the ground. Bucky and Wanda quickly jumped up, there was no need for them to hide, Wanda had made them invisible to anyone else in the memory. Lucky stayed on the ground crying.
"Play your part Lucky" Wanda said calmly.
She nodded as tears rolled down her cheeks, Bucky gritted his teeth as he watched her "Retreat, man down retreat" She screamed through her radio.
"Sergeant what about you?" A voice asked back to her. She hung her head and held back her tears knowing what was going to happen next.
"That's an order" She shouted.
She slowly pulled herself up from the floor and walked over to Jones's body pulling the gun off him to use herself. She knew it was low on ammo so there was no need to check. "What happens next?" Bucky asked standing closely behind her.
She wiped the tears out of her eyes and positioned the gun ready to shoot. "I run forward to stop anyone shooting at the cars. Then they leave" She told him, She walked out from behind the car she'd been taking cover behind and stood in the middle of the war zone. Bucky and Wanda stood behind her at either side, both with their eyes on her.
"You need to shoot Lucky, the only way to remember is to re-enact it" Wanda guided her calmly. Lucky began to open fire taking down many men, she didn't hesitate in killing them. She let out a battle cry as she sprayed bullets through the chests and heads of all the men running at her. Wanda's eyes widened and she glanced at Bucky who himself was shocked at what he was witnessing.
Suddenly an explosion threw her to the ground. "Jesus, Lucky" Bucky shouted as lunged forward to help her, A bright red force appeared in front of him stopping him from going any further. He looked to his side and Wanda shook her head.
"Stop … Don't engage you'll throw her thoughts off" She warned.
Bucky gritted his teeth and looked back at his friend who was now rolling on the floor. Her leg was torn open and blood was pooling around her. He pried his eyes away from her when he saw a man in a suit approaching through the dusty air. "Tom Decker" He snarled trying to take a step froward, Wanda's power stopped him again.
Wanda turned her attention back to Lucky who was lead on her back sobbing in pain from her leg injury. "Concentrate Lucky.. what happened next?" Wanda asked in a soothing voice. Suddenly the three of them where somewhere else, Wanda and Bucky had their backs to the wall in a surgical room. Lucky was tied down to a table, many doctors where in the room all moving around and talking amongst themselves. Lucky tried to fight against her restraints in vein.
Suddenly he appeared in the room, Bucky's blood boiled when he saw the smug look on the mans face. "Hello Sergeant that was very brave of you what you did back there" He said in a tone almost mocking her as he loomed over her tied down body.
"Who the hell are you?" She screamed.
The man smiled "Your new boss" He told her in a soft voice as he reached out to tuck some of her hair behind her ear, she tried to pull away but the restraints wouldn't allow it.
"Fuck you" she spat.
Tom pulled his hand away from her and laughed. "My, my you are a live wire my little soldier" he said in a condescending tone.
"Sergeant Ava Hunt, not your little soldier" She told him trying to ignore the searing pain coming from her leg. Bucky's eyes widened at the sound of her calling her own name, he looked at Wanda who was still watching ahead.
He scrunched his nose up at her. "Doesn't matter who you think you are it only matters what you're going to become" He told her.
She pulled at the restraints again. "Fuck you" She screamed.
Tom turned to one of the doctors stood close by him. "She will do nicely... take her to the prep room" He ordered.
Two doctors walked over to the bed she was tied to and began to wheel it away. "Get off me" she screamed, Wanda and Bucky stepped forward walking past everyone to follow her.
Tom walked along side the bed "I love your spirit" He taunted, she managed to turn her head and spat on his leaving a bloody mark on his white shirt. He groaned and rolled his eyes. "You'll regret that my soldier" He promised.
The three of them where suddenly thrown back into reality, Wanda and Bucky jumped at the unexpected change, Lucky had managed to throw them out of her head. Lucky was sat with her knees up to her chest hiding her face. "Lucky are you alright?" Bucky reached out to touch her knee, she flinched at the touch but slowly lifted her head to nod.
"Ava Hunt? Is that your name?" Wanda asked slowly.
Lucky swallowed hard and nodded. "Yes... I remember now" She whispered wiping fresh tears from her eyes before they had a chance to fall, Bucky felt terrible she was more like him than he had first realised.
Wanda's heart sank as she saw Lucky trying to hold tears back, she lent forward and touched Lucky's knee softly to reassure her. "Okay, We will leave it there I don't want to over work your brain. That was good, you should be proud of yourself" She told her in a soft voice. Lucky nodded and let out a little sob, she felt many things but proud wasn't one of them. "Hey I you handled it better than Bucky, he was a wreck when I went into his mind" She joked attempting to lighten the mood, Bucky shot her an annoyed look. "What?" She mouthed back to him.
"Thank you Wanda" He said letting her know she could leave.
Wanda stood up and pulled her hand away from Lucky. "If you need me for anything, help sleeping anything like that I'll be down the hall. Apartment 16 okay?" She told her.
Lucky nodded and cleared her throat. "Thank you Wanda" She said in a shaky voice.
Wanda smiled warmly. "No problem see you later, Bye terminator" She said throwing a peace sign to Bucky as she went to leave.
Bucky smiled. "Witch" he called out as she walked through the door, he heard her laugh as she closed the door.
Bucky wrapped his arms around Lucky and pulled her closer to him on the sofa, she lent against his chest and took deep breaths in an attempt to calm down.
"A-"
"Don't" she snapped sitting up and pulling away from his grip. She turned to look at him with wide eyes. "Don't call me that name... I am Lucky" She told him, he nodded.
"Lucky" He said out loud, she nodded back at him feeling more comfortable being called by that name now.
She took a deep breath and ran her hand through her hair. "I am not the same person I was back then. Not even a little bit, she was brave and a hero and that's not me any more" She told him, Bucky wanted to argue and disagree with her but he knew now wasn't the time, he just had to be there for her instead. "I want you to still call me Lucky" She told him confidently looking back up at him.
He smiled and wrapped his arms around her pulling her back against his chest. "It suits you better anyway" He said casually.
She snuggled into his warm chest and allowed him to gently stroke her back, she found the hard metal fingers on her back soothing. "I'm glad you where here, must of been hard to watch" She said in a quiet voice not making any attempt to lift her head to look at him.
Bucky closed his eyes. It was down right horrible having to watch her go through that but he knew it was about a hundred times worse for her having to relive it. "It wasn't the easiest to watch but you lived it, that's much harder" He mumbled as he stroked her back.
She smiled a little "I heard you shout" she confessed.
Bucky immediately felt bad. "Sorry it was a reflex, Wanda stopped me from interfering, I'll do better next time I promise" He told her she smiled a little at the fact he said next time, he wasn't put off by her memory and he was willing to go there again. She slowly sat up freeing Bucky of the back rub he was giving her.
She stood up from the Sofa and walked into the kitchen. Bucky sat up straight and turned to watch her over the back of the sofa. "You... you're quite the solider" He said with a small smile on his face. Lucky smiled a little at the compliment, she grabbed two glasses and filled them both with water. "The uniform the gun, you're pretty kick ass Lucky" He carried on, she laughed and shook her head as she walked back over handing him one of the glasses.
"I guess I was okay. But oh my, what I wouldn't give to see Sergeant James Barnes in action back in the day. I think it's only fair you tell me everything" She commented.
Bucky laughed and shook his head. It was a lot different from the war she was in that's for sure. "You're not missing much just a cocky kid from Brooklyn who thinks he's god gift to woman" He told her honestly with a smile.
She'd finally stopped crying and her voice was getting back to normal thanks to the water. Her eyes brightened when she heard him speak. "Now I'd pay to see that" she said in an exited voice.
Bucky laughed "Shut up" he said with a smile.
Lucky walked back around and sat next to him on the sofa. "Can we watch a movie, you can pick" She offered not quite ready to let him leave yet, she didn't want to be alone and she'd become fond of his company. He was the only person she felt safe around now and she was beginning to become attached.
Bucky smiled happy she wanted him to stay, he didn't want to leave her. The only person in the world with a similar experience in life as he had, he'd become attached to her too. "I don't think the movies I know would interest you they are kind of .. old" He said dragging out the last word.
She laughed and reached forward to grab the remote off the coffee table. "Okay then, I'll pick, Dirty dancing it is" She said clicking to turn the TV on, out of the corner of her eye she saw Bucky's face look seemingly shocked. She laughed. "Old man" She teased remembering his side notes about the movie they'd watch just a couple of days before.
"Kid's of today only have one thing on their mind, sheesh" Bucky joked rolling his eyes.
Two weeks later
It had been a long two weeks for everyone at the avengers HQ. Lucky was starting to feel like she belonged there as she slowly settled in to her daily routine. She'd wake up and head to the compound for what ever exercise and training they where doing that day and then go back to her apartment in the afternoon ready for her sessions with Wanda. Nick Fury decided the sessions should occur daily with Sunday being a rest day, Bucky didn't like how hard they where working her but stayed out of it, as long as Lucky was happy he was happy.
He'd taken her under his wing, they went everywhere together and spent most nights at either one of their apartment watching movies and listening to music, sometimes Sam and Wanda joined them but the majority of the time it was just the two of them.
It was early on Saturday morning, the duo where walking through a field behind HQ to meet Sam all while arguing about the film they'd watched the night before.
"Jack did the chivalrous thing!" Bucky exclaimed as they walked through the dewy glass.
She scoffed and shook her head not having any of it. "There was room for both of them on the door and you know it!" she argued with a smile on her face now regretting choosing Titanic as last nights movie.
He shook his head "But he didn't want to risk her falling off, he is a romantic. That's true love" Bucky argued back trying to make his point. Sam watched as the duo slowly walked up to where he was waiting for them, he shook his head at the pair who hadn't even noticed him yet.
Lucky frowned at Bucky. "What's romantic about him being dead and her having to live with that for the rest of her life? He was stupid, plus they only knew each other for five minutes" She said pulling a face at him.
He laughed. "Yeah stupidly in love with Rose, and it doesn't matter it was love at first sight" He said, the pair spotted Sam who was stood in a pair of joggers and an old US ARMY t-shirt staring at them, Bucky pulled a little face realising he'd heard everything.
"What am I watching here, and can you make it stop?" He asked in a sarcastic tone looking over at Bucky.
Lucky smiled and pointed at Bucky. "We watched Titanic last night and he won't stop talking about it" she told him.
Bucky walked up to Sam and shook his hand "Any update on our mission?" Bucky asked quickly changing the subject.
Sam shook his head and let go of Bucky's hand. "Nada, whole things gone cold" HE told him, Bucky's face dropped a little bit. Now he was back at HQ he had been back on the original mission he had with Sam... and the help of that small spider fellow. Sam looked over at lucky and smiled. "You ready for a fun morning Lucky charms?" Sam asked using his nickname for her.
"If it is fun I'm in" she said with an eager smile.
Sam smiled his usually toothy grin at her, he'd come to like her a lot she had good spirit and she always made Bucky smile, that was a bonus for Sam. They complimented each other and brought the best out in one another, Sam loved it. "Oh it's gonna be fun" He told her before looking over at Bucky. "And Jack was stupid, there was room on the door for both of them and there is no such thing as love at first sight, it's called lust idiot" He said in a serious tone referring to the movie.
Bucky rolled his eyes and smirked. "Come on" He insisted now wearing a moody look on his face to mask the embarrassment.
Sam laughed and turned around unlocking a metal box that was resting on a table in front of him. "So what are we doing today?" Lucky asked standing next to him trying to look in the box.
He opened it and a black machine gun sat carefully in the box. Her initial reaction was fear but she soon calmed down remembering the company she was in. "Some shooting. I was thinking maybe some time target practice would help you remember, you know feeling the gun in your hands again maybe it will fill in some of the blanks" Sam suggested taking the gun out of the box.
She swallowed the fear and smiled. "I'm up for that" She said confidently. Sam smiled and passed her the gun, she held it in her hands for a second just looking at it. "Feels … right?" She said almost sounding shocked, she adjusted the way she held it until it was in the right position for her to shoot.
Sam clapped his hands together as the small woman holding the big gun. "That's what I'm talking about.. So we have some advanced tech here. Targets will appear from all over the field and behind the trees. All you have to do is shoot them and not us" He explained Lucky listened carefully and nodded.
"Easy enough" she said to herself.
Sam held out a vest in his hand "Put this on... The vest will turn red if you have been shot" he told her. Her mouth dropped open not expecting the tech to be that good that the targets would shoot back. She placed her gun on the table and took her vest pulling it over her body. "I told you this is advanced" Sam added. He grabbed another vest and threw it in Bucky's direction.
"One for you old man" he teased. Bucky smiled and pulled his vest on, he walked over to the table and opened his own metal brief case pulling out his machine gun he'd used in the battle against Thanos, he smiled when he saw it.
Lucky watched as Bucky and Sam got their weapons ready smiling at the fact they we're doing this together as a team. Sam noticed her watching and smiled warmly at his new friend. "What? sending a soldier alone on a mission is suicide" He joked.
She smiled and raised her gun aiming it at the trees waiting for the targets to come through. "Who's keeping count?" She asked with a smile as she stared ahead waiting.
"The system will" Sam answered raising his own gun to get ready.
"May the best soldier win" Bucky said as he pressed a button on the tablet laying on the table to start the training.
At first Lucky was shocked when the orange figures resembling men with guns came running from behind the trees, she wasted no time in shooting them. She had forgotten how good she was with a gun, it had been so long since she'd used one like this but to her it was like riding a bike, you never forget your training.
Sam and Bucky easily popped off targets, with the three of them it was almost to easy, Sam decided to tap the screen of the tablet setting it to the highest difficulty making it more of a challenge.
"I'm out cover me" Bucky was the first to run out of bullets as he'd sprayed way more targets than the other two. Lucky slid across and stood in front of him taking out all the targets that where aiming for him. He only took a few seconds to reload before he was next to her again shooting.
"You're welcome" she joked, Bucky smirked as pressed down on his trigger taking down more of the orange men.
Lucky pressed her trigger and groaned hearing the click. "I'm out" she declared, Sam grabbed her by the arm and pulled her behind him like they would in a real combat situation. She fumbled around with the mag and shoved it back in the gun almost dropping the whole thing. She scrunched her nose, okay so maybe she was a little rusty.
"God damn it" Sam yelled as his vest turned red, Lucky grinned and stepped out from behind him and began shooting again.
"Sorry Sam" She said with a big grin on her face.
Sam shook his head and placed his gun down on the table. "Died saving your tiny ass" he muttered as he now stood back and watched the two remaining.
She laughed. "You'll be remembered as a hero" She mocked. After about 4 more minutes of shooting no more men appeared, Lucky smiled proudly and placed her gun on the table.
"How did I do?" She asked turning to Sam suddenly there was a loud bang and her vest turned red. She looked down and frowned. "Come on!" She complained, a second later Bucky fired his last shot killing the fake man that shot Lucky.
Bucky turned to her with a smug expression on his face, she was already smiling at what ever comment he was about to make. "Little rusty Sergeant?" He teased.
She rolled her eyes. "Shut up you have like 70 years more experience than me" She argued.
Bucky pressed his lips into a firm line and narrowed his eyes at her. "Or maybe I'm the better Sergeant" He suggested with a smirk on his face.
Sam howled with laughter. "OH... That's fighting talk" Sam yelled out.
Lucky laughed "Back in the army we'd of settled this with a fist fight" She told him, she paused for a second and smiled. "Oh my god … I just remembered that" She said looking between the pair, they both smiled feeling genuinely pleased for her. "This one time one of my men got pissed because I was a woman and younger than him. He said I didn't earn my job so I challenged him to a fight" She told them remembering the story clearly in her head.
Sam cocked his head with an amused look on his face. "Who won?" he asked.
She furrowed her brow "Who do you think?" She asked in a cocky tone.
Sam whistled "Damn Lucky you're a savage" He joked.
She winked back at him "Yes I am" she said confidently.
Bucky cleared his throat gaining her attention, he was grinning at her "But if we're talking about us there is no way you could win me in a fight" He told her matter of factly.
She rolled her eyes and folded her arms. "Only because of the Serum. I bet I would of kicked younger Bucky's ass" She told him causing the three of them to laugh. Bucky shook his head disagreeing.
"Having fun kids" a familiar voice called putting an end to the laughter.
The three of them turned to see Nick "Mr Fury" Lucky greeted him with a small smile, she still didn't one hundred percent like the man, he scared her and she knew he had a lot of power over her. She tried her best to play along and be a part of the team hoping it would make her time here easier. "I'm remembering more and more every day sir" She told him in a hopeful voice.
He nodded pleased to hear that. "Good to know kid" he said before turning his attention to Bucky and Sam who were leaning against the table full of weapons. "We're trying to track HYDRA still nothing on there location?" He asked, the boys both shook there head and Lucky cringed knowing it was here memory they where waiting on for the answers.
"Sorry" she mumbled.
Nick turned to her and smiled. "Not a problem, Wanda's coming by tonight right?" He asked.
Lucky nodded and forced a smile "Yeah about 7" she told him.
"Maybe you'll remember tonight" He suggested.
She nodded knowing how slow the sessions had been going it probably wasn't going to happen. "Maybe yeah" she mused.
Fury nodded and looked at the table full of weapons and smiled. "Who won?" He asked.
"Me" Bucky said with a smile. Fury's smile dropped.
"Don't look so proud you have like 70 years more experience than these two" He told him before turning to walk off back towards the main building. Bucky's smile dropped into an annoyed expression at the comment. Lucky covered her mouth to stop herself laughing at the look on Bucky face. Sam wasn't so stealthy in hiding his reaction.
"Burn" He called out loudly.
Bucky rolled his eyes. "Shut up" he muttered as he turned to the table to place his gun back in the box.
Sam pulled his vest off and discarded of it on the table, he pulled his phone out of his pocket and smiled at it. "Right well that was fun but I think I'm gonna let you two clean this up, peace" He said to the duo before jogging off before they could argue.
Lucky stood with her mouth hanging open. "Typical man behaviour" she complained looking over at Bucky who was laughing at her. She narrowed her eyes at him. "What you laughing at, I'll still fight you" she joked.
Bucky laughed and held his arms out to her "Come on then" He offered with a big grin on his face.
She smiled and took a careful step forward before pointing at him. "No using the super arm" She warned.
His eyes crinkled up as he laughed. "Still to easy" He mocked. She ran forward and tried to grapple with him, he didn't move and inch as she tried her best to wrestle him to the ground. Bucky began to laugh at her attempts. "Are you trying to tickle me?" He asked as her tiny hands grabbed him by his waist to try and push him down.
She stopped for a moment and looked up at him. "No, why? ...Are you ticklish?" She asked with a grin of her own.
Bucky shook his head "No" He lied.
She giggled "You liar" she squealed as she began to tickle him. Bucky tensed up and covered his body with both arms as he laughed at the horrible feeling.
"Stop" He begged, she didn't stop until he was laughing so much she could push him to the floor. Bucky tumbled back and lead in the grass trying to catch his breath from the brutal tickle attack, he still was wearing a massive grin on his face. She celebrated by jumping around in a circle and cheering for herself. Bucky propped himself up on his elbows and watched her congratulate herself, shaking his head at her.
Once she'd finished celebrating she turned back to the mess on the table and her smile fell. "We better get this packed up" She told him, he nodded and jumped up from the floor walking over to help her. She'd had fun this morning she was almost disappointed it was over, she sighed at the thought of the Wanda appointment she had later in the day. She liked Wanda, she was easy to talk to and it never hurt having another girl around especially when you spend most of your time with Bucky and Sam, but the daily sessions where getting to be a lot for her. "I don't want to remember tonight" She said with a sigh.
Bucky looked up from what he was doing "Why?" He asked.
She shrugged not really having a good answer apart from the fact she was tired. "I'm having too much fun I don't want to kill it with his face" She said honestly. Bucky's shoulders sagged and he walked over to her wrapping his arms around her, he knew it made her feel safe and he didn't mind it either.
He squeezed her tightly. "You're brave Lucky" He mumbled into her hair, she smiled and squeezed him back.
"So are you" She mumbled into his chest, she inhaled the scent of old spice on his shirt and it warmed her heart. There was no other place in the world she felt safer than in Bucky arms, and Lucky for her he didn't seem to mind her needy behaviour.
After realising she'd been clung onto him for way to long she sheepishly pulled away and ran her hand through her hair quickly turning back to the messy table. He watched her as she quickly grabbed items and threw them back into the right box. He suddenly smiled to himself and turned to HQ and began to run. Lucky dropped one of the cases and turned to face him. "Where are you going?" she yelled in shock .
"I need to go do something" Bucky shouted back.
Lucky stood with her mouth hanging open. "What about all of this?" She asked in a high pitched voice.
She heard Bucky laugh "Sorry but it will be worth it" He yelled back as he sped towards the building.
She twisted her mouth in annoyance of being ditched to clean up. "MAN BEHAVIOUR" she yelled. She huffed and turned back to the table and aggressively packed the rest of the equipment away.
Bucky hadn't even broken a sweat when he reached the kitchen of the compound. He knew that's where he would find Wanda, no doubt trying a new dish out. He smiled when he saw her hovering around the stove. "Wanda" he called out, she turned to him and cocked her head, it was unusual to see Bucky smiling like he was around just her. "I need to talk to you" He said.
She turned around fully and placed her hands on her hips. "About?" she asked.
Bucky smiled. "Lucky".
Wanda narrowed her eyes at him. "Is she okay?" she asked drawing out her words.
Bucky shrugged. "Kind of, I was wondering if you could do something for me?" He asked in a hopeful voice. Wanda looked at him with a slight look of worry about what he was planning.
HYDRA HQ
NEW YORK
The doctor came running into Tom's office without knocking on the door, something that on a usual day would of come with an hour long lecture on privacy. "It worked. Mr Decker it worked!" The man yelled in excitement. He stopped in front of the desk Tom was sat at and placed both his hands on his desk. The older man was trying to catch his breath, he'd clearly ran from the lab "Soldier 342 is awake and responsive" He said in a breathless voice but with a smile on his face.
Tom's lips curved into a cunning smile. "Perfect" He purred rubbing his hand's together. "What about the others?" He asked promptly.
The man stood up straight finally able to catch his breath. "We're pepping them for the serum next" He said with a grin.
Tom stood and shook the doctors hand for his good work. "Good man" He complimented. "We've done it. Once they are ready we will have an army, an army no man will ever expect" Tom gloated.
The doctor stood proudly. "I have to say sir I was sceptical about using children but now that it has worked I can see why it was such a good idea, no one will ever suspect them" the doctor complimented on the mans diabolical plan.
Tom placed his hands behind his back and began to pace around his office with a smile on his face, his plan was finally coming together, soon he'd be the most powerful man in the world. Miles ahead of Tony stark, he knew if he managed to pull this off there would be no one that could stop him. "Next we need to find the location of the Super Soldier and that annoying little girl. Then with him and my army we can take down the avengers and any superpowered being. We will run this world" He plotted out loud, the doctor smiled and nodded along.
"Very well done sir, you're leadership is second to none" He praised.
Tom smugly smiled. "I know" He boasted. "Go finish what needs to be done" He ordered.
The doctor nodded keenly "Yes sir" He said before exiting the room to head back to the lab.
When he was alone in his office he laughed and clapped his hands together and pressed them to his lips. "We're coming for you winter soldier" He whispered into his hands as he grinned like the devil.
