I'll Never Forgive My Heart (song by Brooks and Dunn) Yet another Challenge fic. Good thing I'm a Brooks and Dunn fan. ;)
Hello heartache who let you in
I swore the last time never again
Back together just you and me
Where's your old friend Mr. Misery
He knew exactly what was causing his current state of misery… it was that blasted bottle of Whyren's Reserve. The handsome, dark-haired man glared at the bottle, as though it were somehow to blame for all his troubles. Yes, he was miserable and heartbroken, and he had no one to blame but himself. And, of course, HIM.
I went and did it I dropped my guard
I fell in and I fell hard
Now she's found someone new
How could I have been such a fool
Oh, what a fool he'd been. Never fall in love again, he told himself as he took another swallow, feeling the amber liquid scald his insides. Oh, the irony. He had given his heart to her, fully and completely. She was everything he'd ever wanted. Oh, some men would have scoffed, and told him she wasn't beautiful. But she had it where it counted; she had heart. She'd been with him through thick and thin, and saved his life more than once. You couldn't put a price on that. And now she had left with… HIM.
Oh close the door turn out the lights draw the curtain
I'll get over her in time it's gonna take some hurtin'
I tell myself I told you so as I fall apart
I can't blame love
But I'll never forgive my heart
The blinking neon light from the street below hurt his eyes, so he dimmed the dura-glass panels while he listened to the song playing in the next room, loud enough that he could hear every word. The song's words cut him to his very soul. Time, he thought, wallowing in self-pity. Time did not heal all. Sometimes it just turned a person bitter and brittle. Yes, he was hurting, and but he was doing his best not to fall completely apart. He didn't blame his problems on love. No, he blamed HIM. He blamed that tall, lanky Corellian who had won his precious love in a blasted sabacc game, and stolen her away.
The gambler would never forgive those cards. How dare they change from a golden heart to a dark knight, just when he'd thought he'd walk away with the biggest hand he'd ever won. Instead, he had lost her… watching as the Millennium Falcon took off with another man at her controls.
