A/N: So this chapter is a little side step from being that entirely that of a Kapowski Smythe storyline set in the past; but it does also as well see how future relationships in some ways were forged back before they were to be that of one of a marriage.

This chapter gives a little insight to that of Artie's family and also his connection to that of the Kapowski family, and also connects into how in the also recently updated story where Roderick says that he has known Artie for a long time. All characters belong to Glee; with the exception of Mikki and her parents, as well as that of Artie's family and cannot be used without my permission.

Thanks for reading, and please if you enjoy drop a fave or follow on it.

Love always

Chapter 9 -

During the summer break between that of their sophomore and junior year, and with it being their first one together since having started dating.
Whilst they did want to try and spend as much time together with each other during that time, they also too knew that they had their own families and also friends that they should also spend time with.

Heading to Artie's for a few days, on the Tuesday; with his Mom and Dad, going to visit one of his mother's sister who lived in Virginia. Sebastian stayed over at his best friend's house, but also too before agreeing to do this had earlier also arranged with Mikki to go and see a movie with her, since she also too was spending some of her time working at the little bakery café that Kurt's mom owned and where she too had also worked during high school.

"You're sure Mikki won't mind me tagging along?" asked Artie, as Sebastian turned into the street that Mikki's house was on.

"No, we spoke last night" replied Sebastian, quickly looking to his best friend and shaking his head. "She was completely okay with it"

"Okay, yeah. I just don't want to feel like the awkward third wheel" said Artie, with a laugh as Sebastian gave a laugh also, and pulled into the Kapowski resident driveway and pulling in behind Midge's car, turned off the engine of his car. "So you've spent a bit of time here over the summer"

"Yeah, I have" replied Sebastian, with a smile to his friend as the two of them got out and headed to the front door. "Stayed over a few nights as well too. Mik's parents are really great"

"And her sisters and brother obviously don't mind you staying over either" said Artie, as Sebastian looked to him shaking his head, and went to ring the doorberll at the front door just as it opened.

"Hi" said Kitty, looking to him with a smile. "Mikki's upstairs"

"Thanks Kitty" replied Sebastian, with a smile to her also. "This is my best friend Artie"

"Yeah, hi" said Kitty, with a small smile to him as Artie also replied a quick "Hi".

"I got to go, meeting friends at the mall to do some shopping" she said, as Sebastian looked to her with a nod.

"Bribed Mikki for money again" asked Sebastian, with a laugh as Kitty looked to him shaking her head.

"No, she said no more. But there is always you to go to for hush money" replied Kitty, with a smile to him.

"Hmm, not going to happen" replied Sebastian, shaking his own head with a smile to her. "Go, you'll be late to meet your friends"

"Yeah, see you later no doubt" replied Kitty, leaving the front door open for them and heading to the car that she and Mikki had shared during high school and that Marley would drive once she got her full license to go to school in.

"Come on in" said Sebastian, as he walked into the Kapowski resident and looking to his friend with a smile, as Artie walked into the house and Sebastian closed the front door behind them. "Mikki's upstairs so we'll just go and tell her where here, and then we can leave"

"I'll just wait down here" said Artie, looking to his friend with a smile. "I don't want to feel as if I am intruding when I haven't been invited"

"Oh Mikki or anyone in her family won't mind" said Sebastian shaking his head. "Kitty, who you met just then" he continued, as Artie gave a small nod. "She's just a little brash, but you get use to her"

"Okay, yeah" replied Artie, looking to his friend. "She's the one after Mikki, right?"

"She is, yeah" said Sebastian, as he started up the stairs to head to Mikki's room. "Then it's Marley and Rod"

"So brother is the youngest" said Artie, and Sebastian looked to him with a nod as they got to the top of the stairs and he turned to walked to Mikki's room which was the second one to the left once upstairs.

"Yep" he replied with a smile to his friend, as he walked into Mikki's room and saw her sitting on her bed, typing on her laptop whilst Artie waited at the door. "Hey, you're not getting a head start on any school work for next year are you?" he asked with a laugh as he sat on the bed and Mikki looked to him with a shake of her head and smile.

"No" she said, and quickly kissing him. "And hi"

"Yeah hi" replied Sebastian, with a laugh and looked to Mikki's laptop screen. "Goodreads"

"Uh huh" said Mikki, with a nod. "Just getting on top of some of my reviews, and also talking with Kenzie too"

"Okay yeah" said Sebastian, with a nod. "It's still all good for us to go to your aunt and uncles place on the weekend"

"It is" replied Mikki, with a smile to him, as she saved what she had been doing on Goodreads so it would go live on the site and then closed up her laptop. "Ready to head out?"

"Yep sure am" said Sebastian with a smile to her as he got off her bed and she did as well, taking her hand and the two of them going to head out of her room.

"Hey Artie" said Mikki, with a smile to him.

"Hi Mikki" he said, with a smile of his own to her. "You're okay with me tagging along today?"

"Of course, I am" replied Mikki, with a nod. "Don't ever think you're not welcome to hang out with Seb just because I'm around"

"That's what I told him" said Sebastian, with a laugh. "But of course, he wasn't believing me on it"

"Well I don't want to be that friend who is the third wheel to that of his friends who are with someone" replied Artie, with a laugh also. "Especially when they might get cosy with one another at the movies, for instance"

"Oh, I hate that at the movies" said Mikki, with a laugh. "I've paid good money to see a film, and I'm not going to spend that time making out with someone"

"Yeah that's what dorm rooms are for" said Sebastian, with a smile as Artie laughed shaking his head; having inadvertently walked in on the two of them a few times when they had been doing things other than that of studying.

"That's good to know" said Artie, with a smile to them. "Just maybe next year we need to develop a signal system with Ellie, so that we know not to enter"

"I think so" replied Mikki, with a laugh as they headed downstairs. "Let me just go and let my Mom we're heading off and then we can go"

"Sure" said Sebastian, as they walked into through the living area where Roderick was sitting on the couch reading. "Hey Rod"

"Oh hey" he replied, looking up to them.

"Rod, Artie. Artie, Rod" said Mikki, making the introduction of her and Sebastian's friend to her younger brother.

"Hi" said Artie, looking to him a smile. "Nice to meet you"

"Yeah, you too" replied Roderick, with a smile also. "Mikki said you and Seb are friends"

"We are, yeah" said Artie, with a nod. "Since high school, freshman year"

"Cool" replied Roderick, with a nod of his own. "Hey Mik" he said, looking to his sister. "If you're going to be anywhere near GameStop, could you maybe look and see if they have the new Tomb Raider game?"

"If it's okay with Seb" said Mikki, with a laugh and smile and looking to her boyfriend. "He's the one who is driving"

"It's fine" replied Sebastian, with a laugh also. "If we get time, we can go and look"

"Cool thanks" said Roderick, with a smile to him. "Not that I will be able to get a chance to play it once Mikki gets on it"

"Hey, if I buy it little brother" said Mikki, with a smile of her own to him. "I get to play it first" she continued with a laugh. "We're just going to let Mom know we're heading out"

"Okay yeah" said Roderick, with a nod as Mikki started towards the kitchen along with Sebastian, and Artie as well.

"Mom, we're headed out" she said, as she walked into the kitchen where Midge was making a sauce for that of their dinner tonight. "Should be back around four"

"Sure sweetheart" replied Midge, looking up to her daughter with a smile. "Are you boys going to be joining us for dinner Seb?"

"Umm, no but thanks" said Sebastian looking to her with a smile. "I'm staying at Artie's for a few nights whilst his parents are visiting his Mom's sister" he continued, as Midge looked to him. "So we'll grab a pizza"

"Artie, hi" said Midge, looking to the other male with a smile. "Nice to meet you"

"Nice to meet you too, Mrs Kapowski" he replied, as Midge gave a laugh.

"Mrs Kapowski, is my mother in law" she replied, with a smile to him. "Midge is fine"

"Okay, Midge" said Artie, with a nod. "And thanks for the offer of staying, but like Seb said we'll grab a pizza and I'd also not want to impose on you either"

"From what Mikki has said you were there also last night at Artie's place, Seb" said Midge, looking to him with a smile.

"Yeah my parents have gone to Virginia to see one of my mom's sisters who lives there" he replied, with a smile to her. "And I'm heading up on Friday, since my cousins will be back from their summer camp"

"Yes okay, so what therefore was the dinner that you had last night?" asked Midge, with a laugh looking to the boys.

"Umm pizza" replied Artie, with a laugh and Midge looked to him with a smile and laugh also.

"I thought as much" she replied. "And I'm sure Abby, Sebastian as well as your Mom, Artie" she continued, looking to the two of them. "Would much rather hear that you at least had one meal during your time hanging out together that wasn't pizza"

"Yeah, stay" said Mikki, with a smile to her boyfriend and slipping her arm around his waist. "We're cooking up burgers on the grill as well as corn and they'll even be that salad that you really liked last time we did and you were here"

"Yeah, I mean that does sound a hell of a lot better than pizza" said Sebastian, with a laugh. "As long as it's not any trouble having both Artie and I here, Midge"

"Of course it's not" replied Midge, shaking her head. "Like I have already stated you are both more than welcome"

"Okay yeah, I mean as long as Artie agrees" said Sebastian, looking to his best friend who gave a small laugh.

"Well I don't think I really have a say in the matter, since I am guessing that you want to be spending a few more hours with Mikki" he replied, as Sebastian gave a laugh as well as Mikki.

"Pretty much yeah" replied Mikki, with a laugh as Sebastian gave a nod. "Okay so we'll see you later on Mom"

"Sure honey, have a good day out" she replied, giving the three of them a smile; and they then left to head to movie that they were going to see and also as well to try and stop by a GameStop nearby so that Mikki was able to possibly buy the new game that Roderick had asked her to get.

Having gone to the movies and then headed also to GameStop so that Mikki was able to see if she could get the newest Tomb Raider game for Roderick, or rather herself too.

The three of them headed back to the Kapowski residents, where they were to be having dinner; and Artie also meeting Marley who had been at work that morning at Lizzie's café where she also now worked, and Kitty who he'd briefly met that morning; spent the evening with that of his best friend's girlfriend's family.

With dinner as such being over, and since it was a nice summer's evening and them choosing to eat outside on the back deck. Artie collected up some of the plates as well as a few of the empty bowls from the salad that they had, had; and took them into the kitchen where Midge was loading up what she had bought in herself to the dishwasher.

"I'll just bring the others in for you Midge" said Artie and went to leave and Midge turned to look at him.

"Artie" she said, with a laugh and he stopped and turned back to her. "You're a guest" she continued, with a smile to him. "The last thing you need to be doing is bringing in the things that need washing up and all that"

"Oh it's fine" replied Artie, with a smile to her. "I'm use to it at home"

"Well here you are a guest" said Midge with a smile to him also. "So please don't think that you have to be doing anything like that here"

"Okay" he replied, with a small laugh as Marley came into the kitchen with the remaining items from outside. "And I guess Marley's done the rest anyway"

"Yes, thank you sweetheart" said Midge, with a smile to her youngest daughter. "Can you make sure also that your Dad has turned the gas off"

"Sure, Mom" replied Marely, with a smile to her and also one quickly to Artie before heading back outside.

"You're sure you don't need anything else done?" asked Artie, and Midge looked to him with a laugh and shook her head.

"Totally fine" she replied, as Artie gave a nod. "You know it's very evident that you're an only child"

"It is?" asked Artie, with a small laugh as Midge gave a nod.

"Yes, siblings get quite use to making one of the others do it" replied Midge with a laugh. "One will claim their the oldest and then the other the youngest, and then the others will come up with their reasons for not wanting to do it"

"Yeah, I mean I guess it's just second nature for me to kind of help in that way" said Artie, with a smile to her. "If I didn't do something Mom or Dad asked then no one would do it"

"Yes, no one else to get in trouble for it" replied Midge, with a laugh.

"No" said Artie, shaking his head.

"Go out and talk with the others now" said Midge, with a smile to him. "I've got this here"

"Okay thanks" replied Artie, with a smile to her also. "And again thank you for letting me stay"

"It was our pleasure in having you here" said Midge, with a nod as Artie smiled.

"Yeah, the burger sauce by the way" he said, with a laugh. "So good. My Dad would have loved it"

"Oh well you're quite welcome to the recipe" replied Midge, with a laugh also. "It's just one that I got out of a magazine a few years ago now"

"Umm, yeah that be great" said Artie, with a nod. "If it's not like some secret family recipe"

"No, no it's not" replied Midge with a smile to him. "My lasagne though" she said, with a small laugh. "That one is a Pinciotti family secret now"

"So your mother's than" said Artie, as Midge gave a small nod.

"Yes, she is the one who taught me it" replied Midge. "But it's being handed down from my Great Great Nonna through the generations"
"Well I'd not be asking for that" said Artie, with a small laugh as Midge looked to him with a smile. "But definitely the burger sauce if you're okay with me knowing that"

"Sure thing" said Midge, with a nod. "I'll write it up for you before you go" she continued, as Artie gave a nod also. "And maybe too Mikki can have you over one evening again with Seb, and I'll make the lasagne and see what you think"

"Okay yeah" replied Artie, with a smile to her as Midge got back to finishing up in the kitchen and he headed out to spend some time with the others before he and Sebastian headed back to his place.

Over the years, one thing that had become that of a tradition for her and Nancy Abrams; she and Abby Smythe had a standing two monthly dinner where they would go out, without that of their husbands and children to enjoy that of themselves and also as well just spend some time in that of each other's company.

For that of their next dinner outing though, and with Abby having gotten to know Midge during the summer, and Nancy having heard of her from that of Abby and also her son; the two of them invited Midge along to join them on their dinner out.

Seated in the Olive Garden, in Spartanburg where they had met for dinner; the three women were talking and enjoying that of each other's company and also to Nancy and Midge getting to know one another as well.

"I can't imagine having twins" said Midge, with a laugh and looking to Nancy; who she had found out had younger twin sisters and that one of the twins too had gone on to have her own twins as well.

"I think my Mom and Dad often had times of dread quite often with Kate and Ally when they were younger and the things they would get up to" said Nancy with a laugh. "And then with Kate having twins of her own, well it was certainly payback"

"Yes, I can imagine it would have been" said Midge, with smile to her as Abby gave a laugh.

"All the times of twin swapping and other pranks" said Abby. "They came back to haunt her"

"They did" replied Nancy with a laugh. "It was just unfortunate that we lived so far away so that we weren't able to often see one another back then"

"Well I don't think not having siblings or any cousins close by" said Midge, looking to her. "Did Artie any harm, because he's a very lovely young man"

"Thank you" said Nancy, with a smile. "And again, I know have said before" she continued. "But it was so nice of you to open your home to him when Leo and I were away"

"Oh it was my pleasure" said Midge, with a smile to her as well. "And he's welcome as well anytime too" she continued, with a nod. "Rod especially took a shine to him, being the only boy in the family"

"Yes, he said he and Rod got on particularly well talking about games and all that" said Nancy, with a nod.

"Nothing of which we at all understand" said Abby, with a laugh as Nancy looked to her shaking her head. "Jeremy will talk computer stuff and it's honestly like a foreign language"

"That and anything science fiction" said Midge, with a laugh. "Eric got the kids interested in that, and Mikki and Rod especially they will sometimes talk with him and I'm just sitting their nodding like I know what they're talking about"

"It's the same with Leo and Artie when they talk music" said Nancy, with a laugh. "I love it that Artie's gotten his father's love of music, but again it's such a foreign thing to me. That I have learnt to now not say anything to not look as if I don't know anything"

"Oh well some of Leo's love has bound to have rubbed off on you" said Abby looking to her friend, and Nancy looked to her with a laugh.

"Sure yeah of course" she replied. "And if there is ever a piano where we go" she continued, with a smile. "Then I am the first one to tell him to see if he can play, because I do love it when he plays. But knowing myself how to, like he or Artie. That's just a no"

"My sister was always much more musical than I am" said Midge, with a laugh. "And I cannot hold a tune"

"I'm not that bad" replied Nancy, with a laugh. "But definitely not that of Leo's standard" she continued, as Midge gave a nod. "You and your husband should come over to my place one night and also you and Henry as well, Abs" said Nancy, looking to her friend. "We'll do a no children dinner"

"That sounds really nice" said Midge, with a nod. "Marley and Rod are more than able to fend for themselves for an evening"

"Pizza, I'm sure" said Abby, with a laugh as Midge looked to her with a nod and laugh also.

"Okay, well I'll talk with Leo and then we can organize something" said Nancy, with a nod; as the waitress came over to their table.

"Can I clear your plates?" she asked, and Abby looked to her with a nod.

"Yes, thank you" she replied, as the waitress started to collect the plates from the table.

"Can I bring you the dessert menu?" she asked, and Abby looked to the two other women she was sitting with at the table.

"I think so" she said, with a nod, as Midge and Nancy also gave a nod as well.

"Okay, I'll be right back with the dessert menu" said Karen, giving them a smile and heading off towards the kitchen with the dirty plates.

"The chocolate brownie lasagna here is to die for" said Nancy, with a laugh and smile to other two; the three of them not realizing that in the future they would in ways be that of in laws with one another, and also Abby to not realizing either that the girl who was their waitress that evening would also to in the not so distant future also be one of her daughter in laws.

End Note:
You all know me by now. I love my little twists!

I have said in other stories that Kitty and Artie obviously knew one another prior to their getting together, because of Mikki and Seb being together and him having gone around to the Kapowski house whilst in college. And Roderick in the other just updated story, also makes mention that he too got to know Artie along time ago and that's why he feels closer to him then he did at the time to Ryder when he was married to Marley.

I do see Nancy, as the character they portrayed her in Glee; and also as well have a head canon too for Artie's dad that I think really works well to and if you know your music and excellent jazz pianists then you might be knowing who I am seeing.
The part where I make mention of Nancy, having twin sisters - that is actually true to life and the actress Katey Sagal actually does have twin sisters; and I thought why not bring a little of that into the story and therefore also giving Artie some family that he has a connection to being that he is an only child.
And the little Karen twist at the end, and she being the waitress at the Olive Garden; well that was just too fun not to throw in, knowing that she worked there and that is where she soon reconnects with Jeremy.

Anyway, thanks for reading and I will catch you all again soon.

Love always,
