The next morning Jay woke up and smiled seeing Hailey fast asleep next to him on the couch. He walked through to the kitchen to see Hank standing in there making a cup of coffee. They said hello and Hank spoke up.
"Haven't seen Hailey in a long time" he said
"Yea um I hope it's okay she stayed the night" Jay said
"Of course she's welcome anytime, Erin said you two are really close" Hank said fishing for information
"Um yea we are" he said
"Is something going on between you two" he asked. Jay and Hank had a good relationship with each other and told each other pretty much anything.
"No" Jay said
"Do you want there to be something between you two" he asked and Jay looked over to Hailey asleep on the couch.
"Things are good the way they are, I don't want to mess anything up" Jay said
"So you do want there to be something between you two" Hank said and Jay didn't say anything but Hank knew the answer.
Hank didn't know to much about Hailey as he had never really spoke to her properly but he knew Jay never really got to close to people and had never really been interested in having a girlfriend so if he was feeling this way he must really like Hailey.
"Look if you feel that way then you should tell her" he said
"We have such a great friendship i don't want to mess that up" Jay said
"But if you never ask you'll never know" Hank said and Jay thought about his words before Hailey woke up.
Jay went to get ready for school which left Hailey alone in the kitchen with Hank.
Hailey apologised for crashing at his house and for what felt like the fifth time that day he reassured it was fine, they spoke for a bit and Hank thought Hailey was a really nice person, she was polite and respectful but also very kind and funny, she was a perfect fit for Jays personality he thought.
Jay landed up driving Hailey back to her home so she could pick up her school stuff whilst Erin stayed behind and got ready.
"So what's Hailey like" Hank asked Erin and she knew it was because he was fishing for information because Jay liked her.
"She's very reserved and has a lot of walls around people except for Jay it seems. Fearlessly loyal as well to him. To be honest I think she would stand by him for anything" Erin said truthfully.
"I didn't realise those two were soo close" Hank had said
"They never used to be but after Hailey's started distancing herself he went to speak to her, I have no idea what he said but whatever it was convinced her to come back and hang out with us again and ever since then those to have been inseparable, they have been really close these last few weeks and I have no idea what changed" Erin said.
"And the home life" Hank asked
"I don't know, she seems to be paying for her own lunch and all together a lot happier but I don't ask much because I don't want to push her away, I might be wrong but I can't help but shake the feeling Jay knows a lot more than he lets on about Hailey's situation so I can't believe I'm saying this but I would go to him if you want information on that" Erin said and Hank laughed, Erin always thrives on having the information and answers to things so the fact that Jay knew more about something like that drove her insane.
Hank knew that despite the way jay came across that he was extremely observant, he also new that when Erin came to live with them she took most of his focused and Jay was just left to sit back and observe.
After that school day Hailey and Jay were walking to his car whilst Erin stayed went home with Adam in attempt to work on a school project knowing that Adam was probably the worst school partner in the world.
"Hey I was wondering" Jay asked getting Hailey's attention.
"For your birthday I know your brother can't come down anymore and I know the group will want to do something with you to celebrate on the day assuming your parents haven't made any plans" he said and Hailey shook her head, he couldn't believe they wouldn't even do anything for her birthday.
"So I was thinking" he continued nervously
"That maybe the day after we could go grab a bite to celebrate, just the two of us you know like a date" he said and there was silence. He started freaking out in his head he knew he shouldn't of said anything but Hailey broke him out of his thoughts.
"I would love that" she said and he breathed out in relief and she laughed at him.
When he got home he told Voight about the plans he had for after her birthday and Hank was glad for him. He also now knew how serious Jay was about liking Hailey.
"Jay I wanted to ask you something" he said and Jay took a seat at the island stool in the kitchen.
"I'm fully aware of how observant you are, look I've been suspecting for a long time now that things at home in Hailey's life aren't very good and I wanted to know if you knew anything about her home life" he asked and Jay said no
"You sure because if you know something that could help her you shouldn't keep that from me" he said and he knew Jay was lying
"I don't know anything about her home life your probably just overreacting" Jay said and Hank knew no Jay was definitely lying to him because he was certain about the abuse because Trudy had told him and he knew there was no way Jay was that observant and hadn't picked up any signs despite being so close to Hailey.
"Jay you do know by lying your just making things worse" he said
"I told you I don't know anything" he said
"I know your lying and I don't understand why you wouldn't want to help her" he said
"I am helping her" he said
"Not by letting her get hurt" he said and That made Jay mad
"You think Im letting her get hurt" he said offended that Hank would think such a thing.
"No I think your trying to protect her but in doing that your allowing this to continue" Hank said
"Yea and you know this how" Jay questioned with an annoyed tone
"Jay Trudys been to Hailey's house before and lets just say things there aren't good" Voight said synthetically and Jay didn't say anything.
"Look this is good by you and Hailey being close you can find out information about her home and tell me so we can get her out of there" he said
"No" Jay said almost shouting standing up in disbelief.
"Hailey isn't some project, she's a human being that I care about and I'm not going to sit here and report back to you" he said
"Jay that's not what I meant, I just want to help Hailey, don't you" he said
"Do you really think soo little of me" Jay asked hurt
"What no of course not Jay but Im just trying to get her out of that home don't you understand that" Hank said getting a little defensive
"Look Hailey's not one of your cases for you to solve, you actions affect her life not yours, you get to come home at the end of the day to your family but anything you do now is going to destroy her life, her family and if you really want to help her then you would ask her what she needed instead of assuming" Jay said
"Look Jay I understand what your saying but nobody wants to be taken away from there family, our job is to make the hard decisions for them so they can have a better life and the way Hailey's living isn't a safe way" Hank tried to explain.
Jay sighed and took a moment.
"Look, I'm not stupid, I've thought about every possible way to get Hailey out of that home but I saw what it was like for Erin, it took over a year to get her out and into a home and it will be no different with Hailey. First you'll have to form a case, get enough information to back your point, prove she's being abused, go through the trials and court cases, win and then get her into a different home and it isn't like neighbours and her family are just going to confess and Erin and I are both considered biased because our fathers the office working the case and we are the only ones who know about the abuse. It will take over a year to get her out and by that stage she'll be eighteen and legal age to leave. She trusts me and I don't want to break that trust I have. I hate that she's at that home but it's just one more year before she can start her own life and move out, she's not alone she has our friends and Erin and myself" Jay said and Voight was taken it back by how much Jay had processed this and knew that he was right in a way, this would be an extreme lengthy process and judging by the lack of evidence they had and the fact that the chances of Hailey confessing wouldn't be slim to non they would probably loose the court battle and that would just aggravate things at home so as much as he hated the idea of leaving her in that house he knew that it was probably there best bet.
"She has me as well, and time she want she's welcome here" Hank said and Jay smiled and thanked him.
