Chapter 20: Hero Names!
Author's Note: This is a pretty short chapter. I didn't wanna make any chapter this short, especially with how long some of the other chapters were, but this was a really awkward segment to fit anywhere. Think of it as a a sort of break or transition from the Sports Festival arc to the Hero Killer one. Anyway, that's all I have to say. Please leave a review if you can and enjoy!
Their short break was over and the students of Class 1-A were asked to return to school. Luckily, they knew they wouldn't be stuck in their classrooms for too long. The internships were coming up and those who received offers would be working with real Hero Agencies for a week away from school.
The rain was pretty bad that day. Luckily, Izuku had brought an umbrella. Unfortunately, the rain held him up at the station for a while so he was running a little bit later than usual. He ran into Tenya at the gates who was running like his life depended on it. They still had five minutes until the bell, but Tenya insisted that UA Students were expected to be at least 10 minutes early.
While they were putting their umbrellas and raincoats away in their lockers, Izuku remembered the news. "Iida-"
"If it's about my brother, I'm fine. There's nothing to worry about, so no need to worry." Tenya replied, smiling at his friend before walking away. Izuku couldn't help but feel like he was hiding something from him, but he didn't want to push even more.
The rest of the class didn't seem to know about the news, or at the very least, they didn't say anything about it. Eventually, the end of the day came and there were a few who were talking about what had happened to them since the Sports Festival, though.
"I was stopped so many times on the way here!" Mina said. Eijiro nodded. "Me too!" Hanta looked at them and crossed his arms. "Some kid came up to me and did the 'Don't worry about it' chant."
Tsuyu looked at the black-haired boy and smiled. "Don't worry about it." She said, making him hold his head in embarrassment. "We've become the center of attention!" Denki said.
Aizawa entered the room shortly after and the class greeted him. His bandages were finally removed, leaving only a scar left under his right eye. It was good to see him again, even if his teaching methods were a bit… a lot harsher than their substitutes.
"Anyway, today's session will be a bit different." He said, not wasting any time. Everyone began panicking, realizing that there was a good chance it was a pop quiz, though they're worries were quickly dashed.
"You'll be choosing your Hero Names." Everyone cheered in excitement, but sat back down immediately when their teacher gazed at them menacingly. "This is important for the internships you'll all be attending. Normally, internships are only available for second and third years, but you've all already got some experience. The agencies see a lot of potential in the first years this time, so we're offering you all this chance."
"So that means some of us are getting multiple offers, right?" Hagakure asked. Aizawa nodded and turned on his presentation. "Yeah. Here are the number of offers each of you received."
Unsurprisingly, Shoto and Katsuki were at the top. However, what was surprising was the fact that despite Katsuki winning the whole Festival, Shoto had nearly a thousand more offers with 3,556 and 4,123 respectively. None of the other students even came close. Fumikage, Tenya, and Denki each had around 300 offers, with Momo being the only other student to reach the triple digits at 108.
Eijiro was the first student in the double digits with 68, while Ochako and Hanta fell quite a bit behind at 20 and 14 respectively. Surprisingly, nobody else even got a single offer.
"Normally, the results are a bit more distributed, but Todoroki and Bakugo drew all the attention this year." Katsuki seemed pretty upset that he wasn't in first this time. The likely reason was that he came off as a bit too aggressive most of the time.
"You're amazing, Todoroki." Momo said, a bit disappointed at the number of offers she received. Shoto shook his head. "It's probably because of my father."
Izuku seemed the most disappointed out of everyone. While he wasn't the only member of the Top 8 to not get any requests, Mina didn't receive any either, his battle with Shoto was actually considered to be the highlight of their division, even more so than the finals. It was likely because the Heroes saw how injured Riolu got and didn't want to work with a trainer like him.
"Whether you received an offer or not, all of you will be required to take an internship. We have a few extras lined up for those without any. Because of what happened at the USJ, you all have already faced Villains. However, by working alongside real Heroes, you'll receive even better training. You'll need to use your Hero names to actually accept and apply to these internships." He said.
Midnight opened the classroom door and posed in front of the class. "These Hero names might be temporary, but there's a good chance it'll stick to the public. So please take this seriously." She said.
"Midnight will evaluate your Hero names and decide whether they are appropriate or not. I'm not good at that type of thing." Aizawa recalled how Present Mic ended up choosing his Hero name back in High School. What a time that was. Working with Mic, Midnight, and… well, now wasn't the time to be thinking about stuff like that.
"Remember, your Hero name reflects who you are as a Hero. It will be a part of your identity, so please don't treat this as a joke. When making it, don't just take into consideration yourself, but also your Pokemon." Aizawa got into his sleeping bag and sat down in the corner.
Small whiteboards and markers were passed around and Midnight gave them a few minutes to think of a Hero name. Once about five minutes had passed, she asked for any volunteers. Yuga went up first and presented his Hero name.
"Here we go. The Shining Hero: I Cannot Stop Twinkling!" He held up his whiteboard and everyone was astounded by the sheer length of the name. Surprisingly, Midnight approved of it, just shortening it to "Can't Stop Twinkling." It had literally nothing to do with Starmie… or any of his Pokemon in fact, but Midnight approved and there was nothing they could do about it.
The next couple weren't anything too special, though they were more tolerable. Ones that stood out were Tsuyu's "Froppy" named after her Frogadier, Ochako's "Uravity" named after Clefairy's mysterious origins on the moon, as well as Shoto's… "Shoto" named after… Shoto.
With only three students left, Tenya struggled to pick a name. While they were in the hospital, his brother had informed him that his life as a Hero was likely over. He wanted Tenya to take the name "Ingenium" and continue their family legacy. Tenya wanted to choose it so badly, but he couldn't do it. He knew he wasn't ready. He went up on the podium and presented him Hero name, "Tenya."
Izuku went up next. He showed his whiteboard to the class and everyone gasped in shock. "Midoriya, are you sure about this?" Denki asked. "That might be your name forever..." Eijiro said.
Izuku nodded. "I'm sure. If I'm being honest, I used to hate this name. But then someone changed what it meant to me, and I've gotten attached to it ever since. This is my Hero name! Deku!" Both Katsuki and Ochako looked at Izuku with vastly different expressions. Ochako was ecstatic that her best friend would choose a nickname that she used for him while Katsuki was upset because it felt like a direct insult to him.
In the end, only Katsuki didn't get to choose a name. He had given several options, some of which were "Lord Explosion Murder", "King Explosion Murder", and "Emperor Explosion Murder" but they were all rejected by Midnight. They decided that he'd just get to choose another time since they needed to begin handing out the internships forms.
Now it was time to select their internships. Those who received zero offers were given a list of 40 volunteers. These were Heroes who, while not teachers at the school, still worked closely with UA. These were graduates or just current Heroes who saw potential in the new generation.
They were all given a form where they would fill in their top three choices. Their number one choice would obviously take priority, with their second and third choices mostly serving as back ups in case an emergency comes up.
Many of the students already knew who they wanted to choose, or at the very least they had an idea of what type of agency they wanted to work at. They had about two days to turn in their forms, otherwise, they'd be assigned to a random agency.
Ochako was pretty quick to decide. She knew that her weaknesses were mostly close-range fighting. Sure, her Clefable knew Mega Punch, but that was hardly enough to even scratch Katsuki's Typhlosion. She ended up choosing Gun Head's agency, a Hero who specialized in teaching both Pokemon and trainers Martial Arts.
For Shoto, there was one agency that he both wanted to work at, but also never wanted to go to. That of course was the Endeavor Hero Agency. It was one of the biggest in Japan and being able to work with the number two Hero would be an absolute honor to most people… that didn't include his son, unfortunately.
Izuku was getting ready to head home when they all heard a voice. "I am..." All Might then showed up. "Standing here in a strange position!" He shouted, crouching down and meeting Izuku eye-to-eye.
"A-All Might?! What happened?!" Izuku asked. All Might waved his hand and asked the boy to follow him. He brought the boy right outside the restrooms where he knew nobody would follow them.
"I'll get straight to the point. You got an offer for an internship." All Might said. Izuku's eyes lit up and he smiled. "Really?!"
The Hero nodded, though he didn't seem very happy. "Yes, and that Hero's name is Gran Torino. He was my homeroom teacher here at UA for one year." Izuku looked at the Hero's face and saw that All Might was… sweating? "He knows about One for All too. In fact, that's probably why he sent the offer."
Izuku was excited to see who this Gran Torino guy was. If he taught All Might, he must have been amazing! "He was a close friend of my predecessor. He's a retired Hero, so I think they forgot to include him in the count." The Hero began shaking nervously. "H-H-He does know about your power though, so maybe it's a good idea to work w-with him! S-Sorry, I'm a b-b-bit s-scared of him. Come on, All Might! S-Stop shaking!"
Izuku's feelings of this Hero went from excitement to fear extremely scary. This guy scared All Might, The Symbol of Peace? The Number One Hero? Who was this guy? "H-Here is the offer. Go ahead and train with him. He'll be able to t-teach you well." All Might said.
Izuku didn't receive any other offers, so he didn't really have much of a choice. Regardless of how scary this guy was, he did know about One for All. He would be a good teacher to have since Izuku wouldn't have to withhold any information.
The green-haired boy was one of the few that submitted their forms right away. Aizawa was looking through a few and noticed Tenya's specifically. The choice was strange to be sure… He had chosen to intern with Manual, the ranked number 222 Hero. He received offers from those in the Top 10, so why Manual? Then, Aizawa saw the exact reason why. "Hosu City… don't tell me..." Still, without proof, he couldn't reject the offer. Plus, what were the chances that Tenya would run into… him.
Later that week, the class had been brought to the station where they were given their train tickets. They all carried their bags which had their essentials. They were told to pack light since this wasn't meant to be a fun vacation.
They also all had their Hero suitcases. It had been upgraded since the last time they had them. Now, there was a small compartment where they could place their Pokeballs in order to slowly heal their Pokemon. It wasn't a quick heal, but it was good in times when there wouldn't be any Centers available.
"Try not to be a burden to the Heroes. If you do something stupid, it'll reflect on UA. Okay, you're all free to go."
As Tenya began heading for his train, he was stopped by Izuku and Ochako. "Iida!" They called out. He turned and saw the two looking at him with concern. "Hey, if you ever wanna talk, just let us know. We're friends, right?" Izuku said. Tenya smiled and nodded his head. "Yeah, we are. Thanks guys."
Though he was uneasy, Izuku couldn't do much more. As he got on the train, he failed to notice the silver Pokemon following him hiding amidst the crowd.
