Chapter 10: An Eye For An Eye
February 2014
Elsa was chilling in her cell at Arendelle Corrections Facility for Women as she lay on her bed. Being in prison wasn't fun, but it had its perks. Being the most feared person in Arendelle made her a sort of celebrity amongst some of the prisoners and in the rest, installed a fear that she couldn't be prouder of.
There was a small tennis ball in her hand and she was bouncing against the wall. As she did it, her mind wandered to several of her kills. Her lip curled into a smirk. Just reliving the kills was enough for her. It gave her that high she loved. That feeling of joy was coursing through her as she remembered.
April 2005
Elsa was walking around Arendelle late at night. The Arendelle Clocktower had just struck one am. There was something freeing about being out and about at night. She was free to be who she really was. It was time for the hunt to begin.
She leaned against one of the streetlights, pretending to read a random book. In fact, her eyes were nowhere near the words on the page. They were instead poised on a girl who was closing up a bar that was just a few doors down. Elsa had been waiting here for her for over two hours. Earlier in the evening, she had been in the bar and something had clicked within her as her eyes had fallen upon this bartender.
The female bartender finished closing up the bar, kicked a few drunk patrons out before heading down the street, both hands in her pockets. Walking alone at night, there could be a killer about, Elsa thought, the smirk reaching her whole face. Shutting the book and placing it in the inside pocket of her jacket, she set off, following the girl at a distance. The girl never noticed that she was being followed. People were really begging to get killed, weren't they? It almost made the hunt a little boring with her prey being so obliging.
Elsa followed her along the streets of Arendelle for at least twenty minutes, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. The girl never looked around once. The only thing she looked at was her watch or the night sky. This was going to be too easy. Her fingers gripped the knife that was in her pocket. Around her shoulder, was a bag with other equipment she may need; a spare knife, some tape, some rope amongst other things.
The opportunity for Elsa came only a few minutes later. The girl had turned into a side street which had a few narrow dead end streets attached. Elsa quickly followed and when she passed the first one, her hand gripped around the girl's mouth and pulled her into an alleyway. The girl struggled against Elsa but immediately stopped, for the knife that had seconds ago been stashed away in Elsa's pocket was now at the girl's throat.
"There's a good girl," Elsa said. "You be quiet now."
The girl was looking at the knife, fear taking control all over her body. Elsa immediately got to work, getting some rope out from the bag she carried and tying the girl up before taping her mouth shut with the duct tape she had. As if she was looking at a new born baby, Elsa stared down at her handiwork. Excitement exploded in the pit of her stomach. She had the girl right where she wanted.
The knife paused next to the girl's cheek. Her muffled screams could be heard as she tried to get away from the knife. With her knee pressed against the girl's chest, Elsa grinned down at her victim.
"There is no place to run or hide," she whispered.
The knife was then plunged into the girl's chest, causing pleasure to erupt throughout Elsa's body. Blood started to pour out of the wound. Elsa dipped her knife into the blood and stirred it around. The girl was giving her a terrified expression. One that Elsa found most enjoyable. The knife teetered in her hand. Where she was going to stab next? The knife found its next target within the girl's stomach. The girl's muffled screams were heard again which only fuelled Elsa's pleasure.
The knife was plunged into the girl's face next, right in the eye and then the cheek. The girl didn't look like her pretty self anymore. Finally, Elsa decided that maybe she had enough fun for the night. The knife was placed against the girl's throat and in one, slow, painful, fluid motion, the knife opened a gaping wound. More blood poured onto the pavement, soaking Elsa's shoes and her victim's clothing. Elsa crouched next to the girl and watched her die. It didn't take too long. The moment when the light left their eyes was Elsa's favourite part and she hated to miss it. As the light drained from the girl's eyes, a pleasure that fuelled Elsa erupted within her. A smile came over her face.
And then the moment was ruined. Voices were coming towards her. Drat, Elsa's fun looked like it was going to be cut short. Quickly, ducking out of the street, she pulled her hood up and lowered her face. Darting along to another alleyway, she used it to get to the main street just as two boys were coming down the street. Elsa waited with a bated breath and then…
A shout from the boys cut through the air. She hovered on the nearby bench that faced the alleyway as the two boys came tearing out, screaming their lungs out about a murder. People were starting to look out of their windows, cars were stopping. One of the boys hurried to the payphone nearby and called the cops. It wasn't long before sirens could be heard and two cop cars came onto the scene. Elsa watched as Bunnymund walked out of one of them. Her book was now in her hand as she pretended to read while the police taped off the crime scene.
Closing her book, she disappeared into the night. The smile never fading from her face.
February 2014
The memory of that girl – she never found out nor did she care the girl's name was – sent the same desires coursing through her. It was a fond memory she had. That girl had left the bar not knowing that it had been her final few days on this planet. Those two boys had gone into the alley not knowing what awaited them. Ah, those were the days.
"Winters," came a voice from outside her cell causing Elsa to look around. There stood one of the female guards with a stern look on her face.
"What?" Elsa asked, almost rather lazily.
"You're wanted in Sector C, Warden's orders," the guard snapped back.
"Fine," Elsa swung her legs around from her bed before placing her ball on top of her pillow.
"Follow me, prisoner."
Elsa followed the guard down the corridors of the prison, not really noticing where she was going until…
"Hang on," she said. "This isn't the way to Sector C, where are you taking me?"
The guard then pushed Elsa into a corner where five other inmates were waiting. They were all holding blunt objects or in one girl's case; a shiv. The guard drew her baton.
"How does it feel to be the hunted one now?" the guard said.
Then all six of them leapt against Elsa. The shiv went straight into Elsa's side causing her to yell out in pain. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the guard's baton swung at her, which made Elsa to put her arm up in self-defence but all it did was cause a loud crack from her arm. One of the other inmates pushed her to the ground and allowed the shiv to be shoved into her thigh. Elsa's blood spurted out and landed all over the floor.
"Stop," Elsa tried to say but she was answered with several powerful kicks to her ribs. Another loud crack told her that they were now broken.
"How does it feel?" one of the attackers asked. "Is this what my sister felt when you sliced her to death?"
The girl picked Elsa up at the collar and punched her again and again in the mouth.
"Your sister is who again?" Elsa asked, her mouth filled with blood which she spat out. "I am sorry, I don't remember all of my victims."
"She was found in the woods," the girl said, giving Elsa a hard blow with her fist with every word.
"Oh, was it that girl Therese Larsen? Or maybe it was Camilla Berg? Honestly, I don't remember, there were a few I did in the woods."
Elsa's smirk only seemed to fuel on her attackers, but it gave her joy to see the hatred in their eyes, the panic that was setting in. It was rather sporting if she did say so. However, she didn't know what they would end up doing next. One of the attackers had picked up a loose concrete brick – the area they were in was under construction – and held it in her hand before smashing it against Elsa's head again and again.
Blackness took hold of her and she moved no more.
Anna was in her kitchen making sandwiches for her three children; Josef, Helena and Heidi. It was a pleasant Saturday morning and they were enjoying a warm toasty fire. It was certainly a nice break from the snow that was outside. Snow…that was always Elsa's favourite thing and now, it was ruined for Anna.
In the years since Elsa's imprisonment, Anna and Jack had decided on no more contact with her. They didn't want Elsa to have anything further with them. Jack had actually had enough of all the stares he had been getting and had moved back to America with his kids just after the trial. Good for him, Anna thought. He had divorced Elsa and sued for single custody which had been granted. The whole thing had taken only a few days to sort out. Anna often wondered what Jack was doing these days. Hopefully he was alright. She would sometimes get calls from him or see his statuses on Facebook. He seemed to be doing okay from what she could gather.
Setting the sandwiches in front of her kids, she went back to reading the paper. There wasn't really anything new in there. Just really reports on the latest weather warning people to be aware of ice on the road. Ice…another thing that Elsa loved. Well, that would be fitting as it matched the ice in her heart. Scrunching up the paper in disgust, she set it aside. Her husband was giving her a searching look from the fireplace as he drank his coffee.
"You okay honey?" he asked.
"Fine, absolutely fine," Anna responded but Kristoff knew that she was lying.
It wasn't until the kids were in their beds and they were in theirs did Kristoff breach the topic again. The pair of them were reading books – Kristoff some crime thriller and Anna some dragon fantasy book – when he broached the topic.
"It was about Elsa wasn't it?" he asked, shutting his book and giving his wife an understandable look.
"I can't even enjoy the snow anymore, Kristoff," Anna said, shutting her own book. "It just reminded me of the times we built snowmen together. There was one when I was three and Elsa was five, we called him Olaf, Elsa had actually come up with the name. It used to be one of my favourite memories of the pair of us but now it just feels…off, you know? It feels wrong! Like, when did Elsa turn into this person who murders for fun? When did that transformation happen?"
"I think she was born like that," Kristoff sighed. "You remember what she said about her stuffed toys?"
"That is what is scary," Anna replied. "Was any of it real?"
"Yes," Kristoff nodded. "Yes, she was this horrible human being, but she is still your sister who you have happy memories with, who you experienced birthdays with, Christmases with, holidays with."
"The problem is that I don't feel like I deserve to have happy memories of her. So many people have suffered and are still suffering because of her. I can't be like; oh, I remember that fun time we had building snowmen or playing frisbee in the park with Jack and his sister Pippa."
"Anna-" Kristoff began, but he never got to finish his sentence as Anna's cell phone was ringing. Anna gave her phone a puzzling expression as did Kristoff. "Who is calling at this time of night? It is nearly ten-thirty at night!" Kristoff continued. "Who calls at ten-thirty at night?"
"I don't know," Anna said as she stared at the unknown number. Cautiously she picked up the phone. "Hello?"
"Hello, is this Anna Bjorgman?" came a voice on the other end of the line. It was a voice she didn't recognise.
"Yes, that's me, who is speaking?" Anna asked.
"My name is Håkon Eriksen, I am the Warden at Arendelle Corrections Facility for Women. I am calling about your sister, Elsa Winters." Anna's voice caught in her throat; anger pounded through her at the mention of her sister's name. "I am afraid there has been an accident."
"What kind of accident?"
"I am afraid your sister is in a coma."
A/N: Ooo what will happen now? Hope everyone enjoyed this update!
