I suspected Holmes had found another case when a large clattering ruckus woke me in the middle of the night. Shortly after, Holmes entered my room, face illuminated by a candle in his hand, and with an expression of grim excitement that almost always accompanied a serious case.
"Watson," he said, shaking my shoulder. "Lestrade just sent a note via the irregulars that he has a major case he'll need assistance with. I'll explain the details on the way there."
"Can it wait until morning?" I asked, pulling the covers in around me.
Holmes frowned. "No, Watson, I don't ask for your assistance lightly, as I am certain I will need it. But time could very well be of the essence."
I grumbled to myself, but rose from the bed and quickly dressed. Holmes already had my coat and bag ready, and without further preparation, we left in a waiting carriage.
"It was only discovered late last evening," Holmes said as the carriage rocked back and forth over a bumpy road. "And so many dead – an entire town! - that Lestrade sent for us at once."
The cold wind howled as we stepped out of the carriage and onto the main street of a small seaside town. Lestrade's face was grim as he showed us the first body covered in blood.
