Mitzi was back in the EPF Headquarters once again, preparing to hear the Director assign her newest mission. When she entered the Command Room, she saw Gary waiting for her. He looked much better than the last time she saw him. His lab coat was no longer dirty and the bump on his head was gone. He must have made a good recovery from his accident in the Mine.
"Why, hello, Mitzi!" said Gary. "It's so good to see you again."
"Hi, G!" said Mitzi. "Good to see you again, too. How are you feeling?"
"So far, so good," said Gary. "The bump on my head is healing nicely, so I've been able to get back to work."
"Good to hear," said Mitzi. "Are you starting two remember things again?"
"Sadly, no," said Gary. "I can remember bits and pieces, but I am still unsure of why I was in the Mine."
"Have there been any leads on the missing boiler?" asked Mitzi.
"I'm afraid not," said Gary. "But the Director and I are working on a Super Secret Gadget to help with the investigation. We could use an Elite agent to help finish it. Would you be interested?"
"Interested?" said Mitzi. "That's an understatement...Count me in!"
Mitzi was raring to go, because she always wanted to help build some cool inventions. Just then, the screen turned on and the Director appeared.
"Greetings, G," said the Director. "Agent Flapdoodle? I didn't expect to see you here. Have you completed your puffle training?"
"Yes, Director," said Mitzi. "My training is complete, so I am ready for my next assignment!"
"Excellent," said the Director. "The investigation could use your help."
"How has the investigation been coming?" asked Mitzi.
"Not well," said the Director. "We have had some unusual reports, but nothing that's helped us find the missing equipment. G, what is the status of the replacement boiler?"
"The temporary replacement is installed," said Gary. "But its construction has delayed progress of the new super gadget."
"I was afraid of that," said the Director. "Is there anything we can do to help you get caught up?"
"Would it be possible for Miss Flapdoodle to assist me?" asked Gary.
"What do you think, Agent?" the Director asked Mitzi. "Would you be interested in becoming G's assistant for the time being?"
"Oh, absolutely, Director!" said Mitzi. After exploring the Gadget Room a few missions ago, she was eager to help Gary with his new invention.
"Very well then," said the Director. "Assisting G is now your top priority, Flapdoodle. Meeting adjourned."
With that, the screen turned off as the Director ended his message.
"Meet me in my office above the Sports Shop when you are ready, Mitzi," said Gary.
Mitzi was always ready, so when Gary walked out of the Command Room, she followed him to the Sports Shop and went up to his office. As she entered, she saw Gary sitting in front of a computer with a 3D model of a bulldozer-like vehicle of some sort on the screen.
"Welcome, Agent," said Gary. "Now seems like an appropriate time to introduce you to one of my biggest gadgets yet - the Snow Trekker!"
"The Snow Trekker?" said Mitzi, looking at the model of Gary's new invention. "No way! I thought that was just a legend! But it looks so small..."
"No, no, this is only a puffle-sized model," said Gary. "The final prototype will be much, much larger."
"Can I help with it?" asked Mitzi.
"Certainly," said Gary. "I will need you to acquire an Automated Cocoa Bean Distiller for installation purposes."
"Huh? You mean you want a hot chocolate machine from the Coffee Shop brought to the Gadget Room?" said Mitzi, feeling a little confused.
"An excellent deduction, Mitzi!" said Gary. "I knew that our pairing would become mutually beneficial."
"Thanks, G," said Mitzi. "I thought we'd make a good team, too."
As Gary went back to work on his computer, Mitzi couldn't help but feel amazed. She could hardly believe that Gary was building the legendary vehicle known as the Snow Trekker. She thought that thing drove off the face of the island a very long time ago. She had heard stories about the Snow Trekker, but now it was more than just a legend. It was about to become real. But Mitzi knew she couldn't gaze in awe at the model for too long, because she had to go to the Coffee Shop to get a hot chocolate machine for Gary. She left the Sports Shop and made her way to the Coffee Shop, but when she entered, she saw the Rookie standing next to the employees-only entrance, which was blocked off with some tape and surrounded by traffic cones. He was also holding a magnifying glass in his flipper.
"When did you notice that the java beans were missing?" the Rookie asked the barista.
"This morning when the delivery truck showed up with a big hole on the side," said the barista.
"Oh, right..." said the Rookie. "You said that before."
Typical Rookie. He was always forgetting things that most penguins told him.
"Excuse me," said Mitzi, interrupting the conversation between the Rookie and the barista. "I just overheard you talking. Did something happen?"
"Oh, hello, Mitzi," said the Rookie. "I'm sorry to tell you that someone has made off with the java bean bags."
"I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I'm not at this point," said Mitzi. "Can you handle this one?"
"Don't worry about me," said the Rookie. "I've got this one under my thumb...if penguins had thumbs, that is."
"Um...Okay, Rookie..." said Mitzi, feeling a little unsure of how the Rookie would handle a situation like this. "I'll leave you to it."
"There don't seem to be many clues," said the Rookie. "But I'm going to keep looking."
"Where were the coffee bags taken from?" asked Mitzi.
"The barista said they were taken right out of the delivery truck," said the Rookie. "Whoever did it left a big hole on the side of the truck."
"Have you heard from any of the other agents?" asked Mitzi.
"Not really," said the Rookie. "Everyone's too busy. There's something fishy going on here..."
"Well, don't give up!" said Mitzi. "You'll get to the bottom of this."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Mitzi!" said the Rookie as he continued to search for clues.
"Yeah, no problem, Rookie," said Mitzi. "Anytime, really."
Then she went to the barista to ask if she could borrow a hot chocolate machine.
"How can I help you?" asked the barista.
"I'm here to pick up a hot chocolate machine," said Mitzi.
"Perfect," said the barista. "I just pulled that one out of storage, so you're welcome to use it."
"Thanks!" said Mitzi as she picked up the machine, which was stowed away in a cardboard box. It must have been the cocoa machine Gary asked for, so Mitzi decided that it was time to bring it back to the Gadget Room.
When she returned to the EPF HQ and entered the Gadget Room, she saw Gary constructing the Snow Trekker for a full-sized penguin. Next to him was a chalkboard, probably to explain how the Snow Trekker was going to work.
"You're back just in time, Mitzi," said Gary. "It's time to put the finishing touches on the Snow Trekker."
"Wow, G!" said Mitzi, impressed at how the Snow Trekker was turning out. "This gadget looks awesome. What can I do to help you?"
"I need you to attach the last remaining parts together as I calibrate the internal computer."
"How will I know where the parts will go?" asked Mitzi.
"Don't worry, Mitzi," said Gary. "The remaining parts are custom fit. You'll do just fine."
"How do we get started?" asked Mitzi.
"Start by putting in the hot cocoa maker," said Gary. "I'll hand you the rest of the parts afterwards."
"I can't wait to see what this gadget can do," said Mitzi. "Let's get started."
"Excellent," said Gary.
Mitzi added the hot chocolate machine to the Snow Trekker and started the assembly. It was pretty easy, because with a little help from Gary, she was able to figure out where all the parts went. The parts were a plow, some buoy floats, and sails. The plow went on the front of the vehicle, the buoys attached to the sides of the wheels, and the sails went on the sides at the top of the vehicle.
"Well done, Mitzi!" said Gary after they were finished. "After many years of development, this new edition of the Snow Trekker is ready for its first field test."
"Where will you take it?" asked Mitzi.
"Me? Oh heavens, no," said Gary. "I am not the test pilot. It is you who shall be testing this super gadget."
"I get to test this thing out?! All right!" cried Mitzi.
"You appear to be pleased about this," said Gary.
"You have no idea, G!" said Mitzi. "I can't believe I get to be the one to test it first!"
"Remain focused, Mitzi," said Gary. "I have updated your Spy Gadget with the activation key for the Snow Trekker."
"Where shall I test first?" asked Mitzi.
"Try driving it deep into the wilderness," said Gary. "That way, I can monitor the effect of the rougher terrain and distance."
Mitzi couldn't wait to test out the Snow Trekker. She just needed to use her Spy Gadget to activate it. Once the Snow Trekker started up, Gary led Mitzi to the wilderness to test it out. Mitzi followed the signs that pointed to the direction she needed to go, and used the plow to remove obstacles that were in her way. She didn't want anything to damage her brand new Snow Trekker, because it was expensive. When she came across a lake, she converted the vehicle into a boat to get across. After a few minutes of trekking, plowing, and sailing, she stopped near a cave.
"That was totally sweet," she thought as she hopped off the vehicle. "The other agents are going to go donuts for the Snow Trekker..."
Then she looked up at the cave and thought, "What's this? Is someone else already here?"
There were tracks in the snow that led inside the cave. Maybe somepenguin was lost or stranded. The tracks somehow reminded Mitzi of snowboard tracks, and it was kind of hard to see them at all. She decided to go inside and see where the tracks were leading her to. As she entered, she saw a stash of snowboarding warning signs that looked like they were dragged in the cave through the snow. Next to the pile of signs was an empty oil can.
"Another empty oil can?" thought Mitzi as she picked it up. "I think the Director might want this brought back to the HQ."
Mitzi was baffled at this discovery, so she decided to call Gary to let him know and ask him what she should do.
"G here," she heard Gary say when she started her call. "I'm sorry it's taking so long. I had to use a bigger drive to store all the data we collected."
"No worries, G," said Mitzi. "I found something here to keep me busy."
"Sorry," said Gary. "I tend to lose track of time when working on the computer."
"All right," said Mitzi. "Agent Flapdoodle over and out!"
As Mitzi ended her call, she saw something outside the cave. It looked like some kind of shadow, but before she could go outside to get a closer look, the shadowy figure threw a giant boulder into the exit, blocking it so Mitzi couldn't leave.
"Oh, come on!" groaned the frustrated agent. "Who in the South Pole is strong enough to move a boulder that big?"
Mitzi was trapped, but she knew she needed to get the boulder out of the way. Luckily, she still had her puffle whistle, so she decided to call an Elite Puffle to help her move the boulder so she could escape. She blew her whistle, and Pop immediately appeared out of nowhere.
"Pop, do you see that gigantic boulder over there?" she told the purple puffle. "I need you to blow a bubble to lift it out of the way."
Pop obeyed and blew a bubble big enough to encase the boulder. The bubble successfully lifted into the air.
"Nice!" said Mitzi. "Now it's time to find out who's behind all this."
But, she couldn't leave the cave just yet, because the exit was blocked by heavy logs. So, Mitzi knew she had to call another puffle to help her out. She blew into her whistle, and Blast appeared. When he saw the logs, he knew what to do. He got into his cannon and shot out, knocking down the logs and clearing the exit for Mitzi.
"Great job, Blast!" she said. "Those logs were no match for you. Thank you so much for helping me! I can always count on you puffles to help me."
When Mitzi left the cave, she got a huge shock. The Snow Trekker wasn't in the same position as it was when she entered the cave, and it was covered in hot chocolate mix.
"What happened to the Snow Trekker?" she wondered. "Did someone move it? It doesn't look damaged, but there's cocoa sprayed all around it. Anyone who was around the Snow Trekker when this happened is probably drenched in sticky cocoa mix. Man, this is so crazy."
Fortunately, the Snow Trekker still worked. It was a good thing Gary had spare parts under the hood. It was time to find out where the trail led to. She hopped into the cocoa-covered Snow Trekker and followed the trail of spilled cocoa mix. After spending some time trekking, plowing, and of course, a bit of sailing, Mitzi finally stopped at the Mine.
"Well, howdy there, pardner!" said Rory the miner. "You been here just in time to help figure out a doozie of a mess."
"Does this mess involve chocolate?" asked Mitzi, laying her eyes on a cocoa-covered snowbank.
"It right could be," said Rory. "Either way, someone's done dug up our mine while I wasn't lookin'."
"This is chocolate all right," said Mitzi. "Just like the trail I've been following."
"Well, whoever dug up the snow also ran off with my favorite shovel," said Rory.
"There must be a reason..." said Mitzi. "I'll get to the bottom of this."
Whoever was leaving the hot chocolate trail must have dug up that snow in a hurry. Mitzi needed something to clear away the snow, but she didn't have a shovel with her. But then she remembered that she had the Mechano-Duster on her Spy Gadget, so she decided to use that. Using the Mechano-Duster, she cleared away the snow within a few seconds, and saw a mysterious gadget underneath.
"First the signs and now some weird machine," thought Mitzi as she picked the gadget up. "I think G will want to see this."
"What have you got there?" asked Rory. "Looks mighty strange to me! Do you know what it is?"
"I don't know..." said Mitzi. "But I know someone who might!"
She decided to call Gary right away to let him know what she found.
"G here," she heard Gary say when she started her call. "What have you found out so far?"
"I found some things that may help us figure out the mystery," said Mitzi.
"I'd be happy to take a look at it," said Gary. "Bring anything you found over to the Gadget Room. G over and out."
As Mitzi ended her call, she used her Spy Gadget to transport herself back to the HQ. She returned to the Gadget Room to show Gary what she found.
"My, Mitzi, you've been gone for a very long time," said Gary.
"It's been a strange day, to say the least," said Mitzi. "Anyway, I found something I wanted to show you."
"Okay then, let me see what it is," said Gary.
First, Mitzi handed the strange machine over to Gary, who examined it carefully.
"A strange device...Yet somehow familiar..." said Gary. "Oh my! This is my Robo-Locator!"
"A WHO-Locator?" asked Mitzi.
"I made this for locating something..." said Gary. "What was it...Oh yes! I made this so I could find robots!"
"I figured it was more than just a clever name..." said Mitzi. "But what robots would you need to locate?"
"Hold on a minute, I think I'm remembering something," said Gary. "No...Wait...I just remembered everything!"
"A chalkboard?" said Mitzi, looking at the chalkboard Gary was standing right next to. "Umm...Does this have something to do with the 'everything' you were talking about?"
"This is going to be a trifle bit difficult to explain," said Gary. "Pictures will help!"
"True," said Mitzi. "It is hard to explain 'everything', I suppose..."
"It all started when I designed a series of robot penguins to serve as test pilots for my more risky inventions," said the bespectacled inventor, drawing a picture of him building some robots on the chalkboard.
"I see," said Mitzi.
As Gary continued to speak, he drew more pictures on the chalkboard for Mitzi to see.
"Strong and durable, the robot penguins were programmed to survey their environment and adapt, but they became obsessed with overcoming challenges! I tried to turn them off, but they were too quick for me to catch. So, I made the Robo-Locator. Unfortunately, I am not terribly good at cart surfing..."
"So, what happened?" asked Mitzi.
"I was chasing the robots down a dark, abandoned tunnel when I ran into something and bumped my head," said Gary.
"Unbelievable!" said Mitzi. "We need to tell the Director right away!"
"Indeed," said Gary. "Follow me to the Command Room."
Now that Mitzi knew what happened to Gary, she followed him to the Command Room so they could explain everything to the Director. They showed him the Robo-Locator and the empty oil can to prove that they had evidence.
"Let me see if I understand this correctly..." said the Director. "All of the trouble we're having in Club Penguin is caused by three robot penguins run amok."
"Yes, Director," said Mitzi. "The clues I found in the Mine match the clues we found earlier."
"Do you have any indication of what the robots' motives may be?" asked the Director.
"I spoke with G and we believe that they're trying to make harder test tracks for themselves to use," said Mitzi.
"Have you uncovered a way to deactivate these test robots?" asked the Director.
"I am working on it," said Gary. "But it will take some time to complete."
