Chapter 20: Hatching an Egg

"Okay class, today I have some exciting news for you all." Teacher Suzie said. "You're all going to receive a Pokémon egg!"

Everyone is class gasped. May, Misty, and Ash are in Breeding Class. The entire class started murmuring to each other in excitement.

"A Pokémon egg? How awesome is that?" Ash asked excitedly.

"This is going to be so fun!" Misty exclaimed.

"Alright. Settle down, class." Suzie said. The class got quiet. The classroom door opened and a bunch of people, wheeling several utility carts walked in. The carts were full of Pokémon eggs. The class gasped excitedly again.

The people that brought the eggs started carefully placing them on the counters. "Now class, while they set up the eggs, I have something important to tell you." Suzie said. "This will be a project grade for this class. You are to each successfully hatch this egg and when the Friday before Winter Break comes, I'll do a thorough check up on each of your newly hatched Pokémon, giving you your grade based on how well it's doing. Does everyone understand?"

"Yes, Ms. Suzie." The class said in unison.

"Good. Now remember, Pokémon eggs are delicate. There will be no running to find an egg and no fighting over an egg. You all choose one you like and carefully bring it back to your desk." By this time, the people that brought the eggs have left the classroom. "Now, walk around the classroom and choose the egg that you want."

The class all got out of their seats and they started walking around the classroom. They all stare at the eggs and try to decide which one to pick.

"Wow...they're so beautiful…" May breathed. "How will I ever choose one?"

"Hmm...do I want this one? Or that one?" Ash asked himself.

"Maybe you both can just wait until everyone else has chosen an egg and you guys will get the last two." Misty said.

"Uhh...I don't want to find my egg like that. I'm going to go over there and look at those." Ash said as he pointed to the other side of the room. He walked away in that direction.

"So, do you see an egg you like, Daisy?" Misty asked.

"Hmm...I love the colors on this one...but I also love the colors on that one…" May said.

"Well, take your time." Misty said. "It seems like everyone is."

"Yeah, okay." May said.

"Princess May."

May lifted her head up. That voice was heard in May's head. Who said that? No one should know her true identity at the school, so who?

May looked around for someone who may be looking at her after saying her name. Everyone was just staring at the eggs.

"Please choose me."

("That voice again.") May thought. ("Where did it come from?") She continued looking around and her eyesight stopped at an egg.

The egg that May is looking at from across the room is white at the top to halfway down and the bottom half is pastel purple and blue with lumps of those colors around the middle. May walked across the room and stands in front of the egg.

"Was it you who called my name?" May whispered.

"Yes. I want you to choose me."

May's eyes widened. She is just talking to an egg. And it's talking to her. Maybe she's lost her mind. Maybe she's going crazy. Is this a dream?

"Well…" May said quietly. She reached out and lifted the egg in its case. "I don't think this is a dream, so there must be a reason why I can hear you speaking to me."

May waited for the egg to maybe say something to her, but it didn't. For some reason, looking at the egg, May sensed something. She felt something. Warmth. And she could somehow tell that the Pokémon in this egg will be just the kind of Pokémon she wants. Graceful, playful, and kind. This Pokémon will be the perfect one for a Princess and May could sense that.

May smiled. "I choose you." She whispered.

May carefully carried the egg back to her desk. Misty and Ash soon went back to their desks as well with their own eggs.

"Wow, those colors on yours are so pretty, Daisy." Misty said.

"Thanks. I think that I found the perfect one." May/Daisy said.

"Alright class, we will be starting a small and simple project today." Teacher Summer said.

May, Misty, and Dawn are in choir class right now and the teacher is about to announce what they have to do for this project.

"What you need to do is get into small groups between 2 to 4 people and choose any Christmas song in the world to perform for the class." Summer said. "The best performances will be chosen to sing during lunch as our little Christmas concert. If you get chosen, you don't have to sing your song during lunch, but aside from the project grade for performing for the class, if you sing during lunch, you'll receive extra credit."

The students started murmuring to each other.

"Now, everyone split up and find your small group and then bring your group to my desk, so I can make sure the song you want to sing is appropriate for school."

Summer walked into her office. Everybody was still murmuring.

"So, what song should we sing?" Dawn asked.

"Wait!" A random girl yelled. "I want to sing with Daisy."

"Me? But why?" May asked.

"You have such an amazing voice."

"Please be part of my group Daisy."

"No! Come join our group!"

All of the girls in the class were basically yelling over each other now about who deserves to sing with May/Daisy.

"Umm...looks like you have fanboys and fangirls." Dawn said.

"What are you gonna do Daisy?" Misty asked.

"Quiet!" May yelled. The class silenced and they all stared at May. "Listen, I'm not singing with any of you. I'm going to sing with my friends."

"Oh. Okay."

"Well, maybe we can sing together some other time."

Everyone starts talking to each other again. May sighed.

"How does Drew do it?" May questioned.

"He's just used to it." Dawn answered. "Anyway, anyone have any ideas for what song we should sing?"

"Hmm…" May hummed, thinking.

"Hmmmmm…" Misty hummed.

"Nothing?" Dawn asked.

"Well, there is the popular 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'." Misty said.

"Right...but what if…" May said.

"What if what?" Dawn asked.

"What do you guys say if we sing a more poppy song?"

Dawn and Misty looked at each other. They smiled and looked back at May/Daisy.

"What do you have in mind?" Dawn asked.

"Wow, you really received a Pokémon egg from your teacher?" Dahlia asked.

"Sure did." May said. "Everyone in school did since everyone has a Pokémon Breeding class."

"So, what made you choose that one?"

"Umm...it's...kinda hard to explain." May said. "While everyone was looking at the eggs, I heard my name being called. But it was my real name, not my fake."

"People at school know your identity?!"

"No. No they don't." May said. "But…" she looked down at the egg, sitting right in front of her. "This egg does."

Dahlia looked at May in confusion.

"It's like...I heard a faint voice in my head." May said. "I found out that it was coming from this egg and it was...telling me that it wanted me to choose it. Once I touched the case around the egg, I sensed something. Something...amazing. I sensed that whoever this Pokémon is will be the perfect match for me. It'll be elegant, graceful, kind, and playful."

"Hey May?"

May looked up at Dahlia. "Yeah?"

"You know in those Disney fairytales that a princess is able to communicate with animals?"

"Yeah…" May answered. She looked back down at the egg.

"Maybe that's what you can do." Dahlia said.

May smiled and opened the egg case. She carefully took out the egg and the pillow that comes with it and she put them on the bed in front of her, moving the case to the side.

"That'll be amazing if I can connect to the Pokémon in that way." May said. She exhaled dreamily. "I've always wished that life could be like a fairytale…"

"Really?" Dahlia questioned, an eyebrow raised.

May looked back up at Dahlia. "Of course!" She exclaimed. "How the Princess finds a guy and they fall in love. How they get married. And they live happily ever after." She said dreamily. "I wish...I am able to just...meet someone who really cares about me and he doesn't have to be a Prince...and we fall in love and live happily ever after. That's really all I've ever wanted since being trapped here for years."

"Yeah. I understand that now." Dahlia said. "You want to find true love."

"True love…" May repeated. She looked down at the egg. She frowned. "I don't believe in that."

"But you believe in happily ever afters."

"Those are fairy tales." May said. "They're for entertainment purposes. They're not real."

"...but who knows? You might eventually be able to marry your true love and live happily ever after."

"I wish…"

"So, shall we add some choreography?" Dawn asked.

"We shall." Misty said.

May, Misty, and Dawn are in a practice room in the choir room on some random day in December, practicing their song for the class performance later in the month. They decide to start adding some choreography because they mastered the notes pretty quickly.

"Okay. How about we start swaying side to side here?" May suggested as she pointed to a printed copy of the lyrics.

"Yeah. They could work." Misty said.

"And we should sing it to the boys if we do it during lunch." Dawn said.

Misty and May looked at Dawn and then at each other and then back at Dawn.

"Why would we do that?" May asked.

"Because if Drew knows that you're singing this song to him, he'll want to confess!" Dawn exclaimed.

"Confess what?" May questioned. "There's no way he likes me in that way. It's not possible."

"Anything's possible." Dawn said.

"Not when it comes to Mr. Popular." May said.

"Well, you're really popular too, so you two have things in common!" Dawn said happily.

"Yeah. One thing." May said. "Let's just drop the subject. I don't like talking about Drew."

"Why? Because talking about him makes you blush?" Dawn teased.

May blushed. "N-no. Because...he's just…"

"Mm hm." Dawn hummed. "I guess we'll drop the topic for now. We're supposed to be working on the song."

"Right. Let's do it again." May/Daisy said.
