Miranda decided she wanted to work as long as possible, and she'd rather have maternity leave take effect after she gave birth; she just dropped Tuck off at daycare and spent some time with him before she walked to the attending's lounge.
How are you feeling?" Derek asked walking into the attending's lounge.
"I'm fine," she said, "for someone who's a million weeks pregnant."
"Huh…a million weeks," he sat next to her, and handed her an orange.
"Just about," she said
"What do you want Shepherd."
"I want in on your surgery."
"Negative."
"Mirandaaa."
A slightly audible groan escaped her lips and she rubbed her belly in discomfort. Derek glared suspiciously at her back, but decided to ignore it as regular pregnancy discomfort.
"No see what you want is to hover over me while I do my last surgery before the baby comes. I told my husband no , I told the chief no and now they sent you with your overly moussed hair. I can handle this I'm only pregnant and I did it before."
"I am coming in anyway and you can't stop me. Why don't you teach me something." Derek said smiling at her.
"You the fancy neuro attending wants to learn some general surgery techniques? Miranda said raising an eyebrow.
"Yes as a matter a fact I do."
"Okay, meet me in OR 3 in 30 minutes."
"Miranda scrubbed in while talking to her son
"Settle down now, Mommy has work to do." She spoke sternly as she felt a pain when he moved.
Miranda was sweating profusely and was getting Braxton-Hicks all morning.
"I'm going to need an extra set of hands for this," Miranda announced to Derek as they worked.
"That's perfect," Miranda encouraged, "You're a natural Dr. Shep- Miranda winced as a sharp pain shot through her belly.
Taking a deep breath to steady her hands, she moved forward and cut around the tissue near the stomach as Derek repeated what she did.
"Good," Miranda said and moved forward to take the scalpel, and then was stumbling backwards as another white-hot pain seared through her.
"Holy shit." Miranda said as her legs started buckling.
"Miranda" Derek exclaimed loudly,
"Aaahhhh!" Miranda shrieked as another contraction hit, this one a lot worse than the last. She inhales sharply and shakes her head as she rubs her stomach. Suddenly, she feels something wet and slippery run down her legs and she stares down at the wet spot forming on her scrubs. Everyone in the room looked down as they heard the splattering sound.
"Derek, my water just broke all over the OR Floor ."
"Some one get a wheel chair and page Webber so he can finish this surgery."
The intercom cut on and the chief spoke. "I'm coming now."
"I cant feel my legs." she said as another contraction hit. She bent over and grabbed his hand. He thought she might rip his hand off completely.
"Holy shit. Bailey" he said when she finally loosened her hold.
"Sorry." She replied softly. Derek picked Miranda up into his arms caring her out of the OR he didn't know what was taking so long to find a wheel chair in a hospital.
Derek sat her down in a wheelchair and pushed her to the Elevator for the maternity wing.
"Page Addison, tell her my contractions are 15 minutes apart. Somebody find my husband and tell him its time , he's around here somewhere."
After about twenty minutes, Miranda was in a room and in a gown. She sat in the bed with her hand on her stomach.
Ben flew into the room flashing his gorgeous smile. "Hey baby, I am sorry I took a while, I ended up taking a surgery instead of waiting around for you after you kicked me out."
"Its okay, I knew you were around here -some Ahh where Miranda finished as another contraction hit.
"How many centimeters are you."
"I'm only 4cm so we have a while to go."
Ben nodded in response.
"Hey baby can you get Tuck from the daycare and take him to his dads house I'm going to call him and tell him I am in labor. Also some Italian ice from the place on the corner on your way back please."
"Okay, but you call me if something happens or if he's making an entrance."
"I promise I will hold him in until you get back." Miranda laughed and if George was alive he would tell Ben that she meant it.
Ben was back in no time and was helping Miranda walk around the room and use the exercise ball, which she quickly got off when a contraction hit. She was staring at it like she wanted to pop it.
Hours later Miranda was dilated to nine centimeters and her contractions were getting very close together. Addison went to do a consult on another patient and then she would be back. By that time they were hoping that the baby would progress to the final stages of labor so that Miranda could push.
Ben held Miranda's hand as she felt another contraction come on. Her grip got tighter as the contractions got worse. But Ben was proud of Miranda. He had never found her more beautiful than the months that she was carrying their child.
When Addison came back in she checked Miranda's status and spoke, "Well Dr. Bailey. It is time for you to have this baby. Now I need for you to push when I say. Alright?"
Miranda nodded, "Alright."
Ben kissed her forehead, "Miranda we're having a baby."
Miranda looked over at him somewhat annoyed, "Really? I had no idea?"
Addison and the nurse laughed.
"Alright Miranda, its time for your first push. One, two three…. and very good." Addison said.
Miranda put her head back on her pillow. Ben was holding her hand as well as holding one of her legs in place. "Oh my God, this shit kind of hurts. I don't remember it being like this."
"It is normal and you are doing great." Addison said as Miranda prepped for her next push.
Ben watched Miranda push and he could not help but realize how beautiful she was. Her face had a glow from the sweat and her brown hair was also wet from sweating, She was beautiful and she was having his baby.
After a few more pushes Addison said, "Alright, the babies head is out. Miranda, I need one more push out of you."
Miranda nodded and looked at Ben, "This is it."
"This is it." Ben responded as he kissed her hand.
Miranda put out one more push.
"Push…one two and three." Addison said as she assisted in pulling the baby out. She suctioned the baby's mouth and a strong cry was heard.
Miranda began to cry and Ben had tears in his eyes. He was amazed that he was a father and his baby was right there in front of him. Addison ushered him to walk over and cut the cord.
The nurses took the baby over to the corner and cleaned him quickly. Addison brought the new bundle over and handed him to Miranda. "Congratulations, he weighs 6 pounds and 11 ounces. He is also seventeen inches long."
"Thank you Addison." Miranda said.
"My pleasure."
After a few moments Addison and the nurse left the new family alone.
Ben kissed Miranda on the lips and said, "I love you and I am so proud of you."
"Thank you. Can you believe he is actually here? We made him." Miranda said with pure joy. "So what do we want to name him?"
Ben smiled, "Well I know we both wanted to be able to call them Danny , so I was thinking Daniel.
Miranda played with it in her head trying to think of a middle name, Tuck was already named after her father and George.
"Richard." Miranda said out loud
"Daniel Richard." Ben said smiling.
"I like that. Daniel Richard Warren, welcome to the world." Miranda said as she smiled at the sight of Ben gazing at their baby.
Miranda handed the baby to Ben and she leaned back exhausted.
A little while later. Everyone walked in holding balloons and baring gifts.
Arizona cooed "He is adorable." She said taking him from Ben's arm
Callie burst into the room with Owen, Derek, Mark, Meredith and Christina behind her.
"Godmother is here." Callie said walking over to April who had him. Miranda laughed at her
"Derek, Thanks for helping me today." Miranda said smiling at him.
"No problem Miranda, I am on your 6." He said chuckling.
"What's his name." April asked handing the baby to Richard who was sitting in the chair next to Miranda.
Miranda turned to face Richard while answering April's question.
"His name is Daniel Richard Warren."
Ben and Miranda took in Richard's face as he registered what she said. Richard smiled so hard looking from the baby to Miranda.
"You know Miranda I always thought of you as my daughter. I never had kids of my own, but you came and filled that void. Now you named your Son after me and I will forever be grateful.
"Aww Richard." Miranda said her eyes watering.
Miranda turned and saw Alex with a scowl on his face "What's wrong." She asked looking at him."
"How come you named your kid after O'Malley, now the chief , but what about me.
Am I not worthy enough to have a kid named after me."
Don't be a baby about it. Christina laughed.
"I didn't get a name either." Christina said and Meredith agreed.
"Aww Alex , you know I love you. You have a special place in my heart.
All of you do." She said turning to Meredith and Christina.
The family sat and talked for an hour when Danny started crying. Miranda took him in her arms knowing what he was crying for.
"Okay my baby needs to eat. So I suggest you guys to leave if you don't want to see my breast."
Everyone started exciting the room except Mark who was still sitting with his arms crossed.
Derek turned making a confused face.
"What she said if you didn't want to." Mark replied.
Miranda mouth fell open and she laughed.
Ben turned towards Mark and pointed to the door saying "Out."
After a few unsuccessful attempts, Miranda remembered the trick she figured out with Tuck, and placed the baby's hand on top of her breast to give him a better grip. With Miranda's help, he managed to latch on and began nursing, much to her relief.
"That's my guy. Good job," she said, putting her hand over his back.
Ben watched at how in sync Miranda was with their son already, and he smiled. "You're a natural. Having two kids suits you."
"Thanks," Miranda said softly. "I promise you can hold him when he's done eating. I don't mean to hog him."
Ben laughed. "You just spent Ten hours in labor. You get to hold him as long as you want," he pointed out.
Only three hours old, and the tiny baby on Miranda's chest felt like he'd been a part of their family forever. She smoothed her fingers through his dark hair, still in disbelief that she'd given birth to a child that looked like her, let alone another son.
Miranda kissed the top of Danny's head. "I can't stop looking at him."
"Me, either. I still can't believe it all happened so fast. You… God, you were amazing," Ben said softly. "How are you feeling?"
"My legs and vagina is sore, kind of tired, but in a good way. Like I just gave birth to a perfect, little boy, which makes all of the pain and the pushing totally worth it," she answered.
"Time to get you home," Ben said cheerfully.
"Did you put the new sheets in the crib? Miranda asked for the second time since she woke up.
"Yes I did that when I got your clothes and his clothes from the house."
"Okay thank you baby." Miranda smiled.
Miranda stood up fastening Danny into his car seat.
Arizona came rolling the wheel chair in and Miranda clicked her teeth. "I'm not getting in that." Miranda replied.
Ben picked her up and put her into the wheelchair. She pouted and fiddled with the edge of her loose shirt. Picking the car seat up Ben walked beside Arizona and Miranda.
He fastened the baby in checking before lifting Miranda up and putting her into the back seat of car beside Danny.
"You know, eventually, I'm going to have to walk again," Miranda reminded Ben as he fed her food.
"Not for a while. Take a break. It's my turn now," he murmured, holding the lasagna to her mouth again.
She took a bite and chewed slowly. She closed her eyes and lay back on the pillows. "I'm so tired," she mumbled.
"Take a nap."
Danny wailed from his bassinet next to them. Miranda pouted. Ben put the plate with the lasagna aside and Danny from the crib. He handed the baby to Miranda and crawled in behind her to help her sit up.
"He's so cute," Miranda murmured letting him latch on, "even for a little baby."
"Yeah," Ben agreed, sliding one arm under hers to help support the baby.
Ben stared at his son for a few minutes while she breastfeed. "Miranda you're my dream come true. This is my dream come true. You are my true love and I am glad I get to share my life with you."
"Aww Benjamin Warren." Miranda said turning as best as she could in his arms to see his face. "I love you more than I can hold in my heart. Thanks for bumping into me."
"It was my pleasure." Ben replied kissing her cheek.
