Amelia woke early the next morning to let Thomas out and see him off with Minho, it had been years since she saw someone so excited to enter the maze, once again hope bubbled in her stomach, although it could have been the call of breakfast. Amelia spent her day split between Alby's bedside and helping Newt in the gardens. Theresa seemed to have some medically knowledge lodged somewhere at the back of her brain and had appeared to have taken over Alby's care. Clint and Jeff weren't too bothered, they were glad that someone seemed to have some confidence in what to do, they had got their jobs because they were kind and gentle rather than having any kind of medical ability. It was getting late in the afternoon when the noises had started in the maze. Loud screeching noises, noises it normally made at night when the walls were moving around. It was another hour before Minho and Thomas appeared, by which time most of the glade was gathered around the doors unable to ignore the sounds of the maze changing any longer.
"What the hells going on out there?" Newt questioned as the boys re-entered the glade.
"What the hell you done now Thomas." Gally spat.
"We found something." Thomas chose to ignore Gally. "A new passage, we think it could be a way out."
"It's true, we opened a door with this." Minho added. He held up the metal thing they had pulled out a griever, Amelia assumed it must act as some kind of key. "It opened a passage I've never seen before, we think it might be where the Grievers go during the day."
"Wait, whoa whoa whoa, you're saying you found the Grievers home? And you want us to go in?" Chuck asked incredulously.
"Their way in could be our way out Chuck." Thomas reassured the young boy.
"Yeah OR there could be a dozen Grievers on the other side, the truth is Thomas doesn't know what he's done, AS USUAL."
"At least I did something Gally, ey what have you done?" Thomas rounded on Gally. Amelia rolled her eyes as they argued, she noticed Theresa running towards them and ran to meet her.
"Alby's awake." The new girl said to her, she looked over to the arguing boys, Newt had put himself in-between the two of them in attempt to diffuse the fight. "OI, ITS ALBY. He's awake." The keepers all ran to the hut, Alby was sat up on his bed when they entered, he gave Amelia a watery smile as she sat beside him and took his hand, nodding at Newt and the others as they entered. Thomas knelt down in front of him.
"Alby? Alby you alright?" Newt asked from Alby's other side.
"Alby? Hey? Alby we may have just found a way out of the maze. We could be getting out of here." Thomas told him, instead of excitement however Alby's eyes started to water and he clenched hard on Amelia's hand as if using her as an anchor.
"We can't. We can't leave. They won't let us." His voice was tiny and broken, it tore Amelia's heart to hear him so hopeless.
"What are you talking about?" Thomas questioned.
"I remember." The Gladers all shared glances with each other.
"What do you remember?" Thomas pressed.
Alby turned and looked at Thomas, "You. You were always their favourite Thomas. Always." Voices could be heard from outside but Amelia stayed holding Alby's hand. "Why did you do this? Why did you come here?" Tears started cascading down Alby's face but the voices outside had become to frantic to ignore, giving Alby's hand a quick squeeze Amelia and the others ran outside. They were greeted by chaos, the Gladers running round in panic, Thomas grabbed Winston as he was passing with a torch.
"Hey Winston what's happening?"
"It's the doors. They're not closing." He was right as well. Amelia looked at her watch. It was 6.20 the doors had never closed late once in the three years she had been trapped there. They ran to the doors, no movement out there yet, thank god she thought. A thought she instantly regretted. The loudest noise she'd ever heard in the erupted into the silence. Looking around her heart might as well have stopped beating. Doors were opening in every wall. They were completely exposed. They jumped into action.
"Chuck I want you to go to the hall, start barricading the doors." Thomas told the young boy.
"Winston you go with him." Newt added.
"Theresa, come with me we'll get Alby and meet you all in the hall." Amelia dragged Theresa with her giving Newt what she prayed was a reassuring smile over her shoulder but what was probably more of a grimace. She pelted dragging the girl towards the medjacks hut, the horrifying screech of the Grievers suddenly clear as day and within the glade itself. Alby was on his feet when they entered the hut. She and Theresa hooked an arm each over their shoulders and started moving Alby out into the glade. The situation had deteriorated rapidly in the seconds they had been inside. Theresa nearly dropped Alby when Thomas's horrified yell pierced the air.
"ZART, CLINT NOOOOOO." Amelia spun round and saw Thomas and, thank god, Newt running towards the hall. She pushed Theresa and Alby though the sea of hammocks hoping it would shield them from view. The screams of the Gladers and Grievers almost combined into one terrifying noise. She watched in utter horror as glader after glader was injured, and likely killed, at the hands of the invading monsters. Out the corner of her eye she saw Gally moving a group of around eight Gladers towards the box and hopefully to safety. They reached the end of the hammocks and stepped out into the open to make the final push to the council hall. Movement to the side caused the two girls to jump, Amelia pulling out the blade that had lived on her belt for the last three years and Theresa grabbing hold of a lantern from the edge of the homestead.
"Whoa whoa whoa its us." Thomas, Newt, Minho and a few others all held their hands up at the armed girls who relaxed slightly at the sight. Newt's eyes met Amelia's and relief flooded his face, he moved quickly towards her and pulled her in for a searing kiss.
"NOT REALLY THE TIME GUYS." Minho yelled from behind them. A griever suddenly rounded the corner blocking the way to the council hall. Theresa, thinking quick, raised her arm and threw the lantern at it. The lantern exploded on impact as the oil mixed with the flame injuring the Griever and stalling it in its tracks. Taking advantage of its temporary incapacity they charged forwards, Chuck threw the doors of the council hall open and they fell inside, barricading the door behind them. For a minute there was silence, then an arm flew through the wall seizing a glader and throwing the boy out with such force Amelia knew he would not have survived, it was so quick she didn't even see who it was. Another arm slammed through the opposite walls and latched onto Chuck, prepared this time the Gladers threw themselves towards him and grasped hold of his hands. The boy screamed hollering as loud as he could for help. Alby grabbed hold of a broken beam from one of the walls and attacked the Grievers metal arm, bashing it repeatedly until it relinquished its grip on Chuck. Amelia pulled Chuck to her hugging him close to her chest and kissing his head, Newt put his arms around them both. There was calm for a second and then the arm came charging back in, it knew its target. Alby. Thomas grabbed hold of Alby's arms but Amelia could tell it was no good this time.
"Get them out Thomas." Alby almost whispered. And he was pulled out of the council hall. Thomas screamed his name and charged from the hall. The Grievers seemed to have had their fill of destruction and made their way back towards the maze. Amelia looked around. The glade was destroyed. Buildings were on fire and the ground was scattered with bodies. She spotted Gally moving quickly towards their group and breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of him. As he got closer though she saw the utter loathing in his eyes. Before she could stop him he had slammed his fist into Thomas's face knocking him to the ground.
"Look around Thomas, this is all your fault!" Newt and Minho grabbed hold of his arms and dragged him back from the boy telling him to calm down. Amelia pulled at his shirt and looked him in the eye.
"Please Gally, calm down."
"Look around you Amelia, look at what he's done!"
"THOMAS!" Theresa's yell made them all spin round, they saw Thomas falling back the floor, the sting of a Griever sticking out of his leg.
Gally pulled away from Newt and Minho, and looked towards two of the surviving builders.
"Take him to the slammer, her too." Pointing a finger at Theresa who started protesting loudly as one of the builders grabbed her roughly and marched her over to the pit as the other dragged Thomas by his ankle after her. Amelia spun round to look at Gally.
"WHAT THE HELL GALLY, YOU CAN'T JUST…" She was cut off by Gally's hand closing around her neck. He lifted her high in the sky as Newt and Minho charged forwards.
"Stay there or I'll throw her in the maze I swear." The boys backed off though both looked furious.
"Ga-Gally." Amelia choked out. "Please don't do this, this isn't you."
"I'm taking control. You've failed. Alby's dead and you guys are so far up Thomas's arse you can't see what he's doing to us. Thomas and Theresa will be banished into the maze at sunrise tomorrow then we're barricading the doors. You guys can either stay and do as you're told or you can go with them. Do we have a deal?"
Amelia nodded as best as she could and Newt and Minho glared at Gally before agreeing as well. As if to assert his authority a little more he didn't put Amelia down gently, he practically threw her at the wall of the council hall behind her. She hit it hard and slumped down, winded and bruised. Newt, Chuck and Minho ran to her. She looked up just in time to see Gally walk away, the back of his neck showed the tell tale puncture mark of a Griever sting, her eyes started to droop as she heard Newt shouting to her to stay with him and everything faded to black.
AN:
I've always wondered why Gally went really properly crazy at this pint two my little spin on it is that this is the point his was stung.
