Yanun and Hine seem to recognize Marillo from Zelda's councilmen.
While Sidon seems to have fully recovered, Link suffers from shock and ends up in a fight with Sidon.
In preparation of leaving the domain, Link spends a moment catching up with Bazz and the crew. Only to have it ruined by Sado, wanting to challenge Link and he doesn't take no for answer.
But their fight draws more than a crowed, it brings to light the power Yanun possesses.
-Only obvious key points will be summarized. There are likely moments of an Unreliable Narrator or Sneaky Foreshadowing.-
It was the deep ring of a huge bell that broke the tension in the air, calmly drawing the crowd back from the depths of their minds. From the fear that had them frozen.
Yanun's gaze rose from where Sado lay, her posture straight and calm. As if this was perfectly normal. "I believe this serves as a firm reminder to all my people." Every silver Zora present bowed their head in acknowledgement and then began to disperse.
Another sound of the bell called the native Zora to depart the square. Leaving the four; Yanun, Sado, Sidon and Link to silently stare each other down. The Zora prince was still trying to work around the knot in his throat, he had managed to call an end to- to whatever he had just witnessed. But now, he didn't know where to begin.
He could not deny that there was something to fear of this small woman. It still felt like that moment hadn't stopped, replaying over and over in his head. But a huge part of him was regretting his haste. Yes, he was outraged and what Sado did was disrespectful, however he did not deserve that. Sidon had acted on emotion and on a personal matter, this was not how the future ruler of the Zora should enact their position. He wished to apologize, but... not only had Sado not apologized, he did not know what to expect from Yanun at this point.
When she was not looking at Link, she was looking up at him as she always would. Gentle, welcoming, a tad bashful and confident. The fact she was so at peace with this situation, with her guard wounded at her feet, it was immensely unsettling. How in Hylia's name was he suppose to go about this, how was he to correct this?
A light touch on his arm brought an unexpected wave of ease, a slight feeling of security. Looking down to find the strange source, he was slightly surprised that it wasn't a phantom feeling or the ghostly presence of his sister. But Link, and he kept the contact for a second longer before removing his hand.
[Are you alright? You look tense.] All Sidon could do at this moment to keep his composure was deny the truth and nod in reply. Though seeing Link's strength had given back some of his own. But of course the Hylian knew that something was off, comforting him with familiarity and a small smile. [Easy, big guy. If you are willing, could you ask her how she did that?]
Focusing his gaze back on to Yanun, watching her look them back n forth with slight curiosity. He could only hope that he could speak clearly. "He- Master Link, would like to know how you could do something like that."
"Ah, I suspected as much." She gave a curt nod of understanding, making the small adornments of her headdress jingle softly. "It is a power bestowed by Prima upon me as their priestess."
Sidon felt Link touch him once again for attention, even though he had every intention of checking back with him regardless. It brought the prince relief and was very much grateful for the reaffirming contact. "A power for what purpose?"
"For teaching and protection. There are times where words are not enough for some. Better than anyone, you understand, don't you?" Locking eyes with the blond, though Link was uncertain if it was empathy or mockery. Her intentions were hard to read with her so lax and comfortable. "That actions can speak louder than words."
For the time being, he went with the former and gave a firm nod. Another light touch to the taller man's arm. "He states that you did not need to go as far as you did. That he had done enough to defend their honour, that Sado could have simply walked away. He had already paid the price."
This broke Sidon's composure slightly, the corners of his mouth twitched. He badly wished to say something, that it was his own thoughtless actions that were to blame. But Link's calm gaze remained on the princess and a guilty lump was in his throat once more.
"Prince Sidon seemed to have a different opinion on that matter."
"That-!" He didn't get to begin before Link grasped hold of his hand, it was enough to shock him into silence and even when he looked back to him, Link did not return the action. His gaze fixed on the silver woman.
In that very moment, Link watched her become enraged. Launching forward a single step, barely seeming to be able to hold herself back from attacking him. Her black claws out, violet eyes glaring and even opening her mouth to bear her sharp teeth at him in a soundless hiss. Clenching her right hand into a tight fist, her whole body was trembling as she forced herself to straighten up. Then in a quick twist began to walk away. "Come, Sado, there are things to be done." She said surprisingly calm.
Eyes back her way, Sidon watched the taller Zora stand up to follow after his princess, leaving the other pair alone. Cradling his injured side, he glanced back and gave a small bow of his head. Sidon wanted to go as well, to try and right the wrong he had done to the man, but once again Link stopped him dead in his tracks with a simple act. A light squeeze is all it took to remind him of the small hand in his.
"Link?" He asked carefully, finally drawing in the other's attention. They held their gaze for a moment, then in unison down at their connection. Link flinched like his hand was on fire and withdrew with a few added steps back for good measure. It was a bad time for Sidon's heart to catch up, beating harshly against his ribs from a toxic mix of joy and rejection.
[Sorry, I didn't mean- I just wanted to stop you so I just grabbed without looking.] But Link wouldn't look at him as he signed. [I meant to grab your fin or wrist. Sorry.]
"It's quite alright, no harm done." Another lie to swallow. "Why did you stop me?"
[What she did wasn't your fault.]
"But I-" He stopped from a rise of the other's hand.
With a deep breath, Link meets Sidon's eyes. [Yes, you gave your permission without asking what she had in mind. But it was her choice to hurt and torment him as she did. Do not blame yourself for his wounds. He'll be fine.]
"How can you say that? With the kind of wounds she must have given him, he seemed to be thanking me for stopping it when I did." He said painfully, looking away for a moment as his breath shuddered, it would be some time before that scene would be clear from his mind.
[I saw how easily he walked away, he's had far worse.] Not sure if that was exactly a good thing, but Link was quick to return to comforting the tender giant. [But you did bring an end to it, before anyone else thought to say anything.]
Sidon was finding that there were quite a few moments today that his voice seemed to have abandoned him. He still felt at fault. So he gave a nod in reply and in return, Link gave him a quick pat on the arm. Hesitant, but comforting none the less.
"Ah! There you are Link!" Both turned to the sound of Zelda's voice, watching as she ran down into the square to join them. Dressed in her semi formal attire of blouse and pants. "I was worried that you might of left already and was going to get caught up in the storm. Good thing you're still here."
[Storm?] Link questioned and looked to the sky. Sure the clouds were denser than before breakfast, maybe a tad darker too and there was a slight breeze. But it didn't exactly scream storm weather, it was getting closer to autumn after all.
"What did you think the loud bell was for? Regardless, your safe and that's all that matters!" Link heard a soft click and just as he turned at the sound, Zelda was already dashing back up the stairs with a big grin on her face. "I need to borrow this, see you both at dinner!"
Did she-!? Quickly, Link began patting his hips down. The Sheikah slate was gone.
"Zelda! I don't think this- that is Link's!" There was a faint 'It belongs to both of us' heard, but she was already gone from sight. And Sidon was now left with an even more uncomfortable situation with a greatly irritated Link. Sure enough, to make matters worse it, began to rain.
The hero groaned and held his face in both hands, all the while cursing this day within his head. First the bird creature attack, Sidon's near death, a fight with a Zora snake, some lady with strange powers and now an approaching storm without the Sheikah slate. All well before lunchtime. What else could possibly go wrong today!?
~~~~~~ ҉ ~~~~~~
The walk was more of a wander with the only destination being up. Muttering bitterly to herself or Prima, he couldn't really tell, not that it particularly mattered. He caught bits and pieces, two of the more common being: "How dare he" and "thinks their Zora by dressing like one". Sometimes it was said together.
Their walk came to an abrupt end as she stopped at a balcony and became silent.
"You're disappointed that the little one wasn't a primal, aren't you?" Sado chuckled weakly before coughing, it felt like one of the broken ribs was scratching his lung. It probably wasn't helping that his heart was still racing from the thrill of a new fight, among other things. "That's why you're so grumpy."
Yanun glared at him over her shoulder, but did not give him the satisfaction of turning around. "Do not try to predict the reasons behind my emotions. You should worry more about your failure." She then looked down over the railing, observing the coloured Zora dart to and fro. Noting that the square was now clear of both Sidon and that insolent sharp-ear.
He smiled innocently and gave his shoulders a half-hearted shrug. "I did no such thing, you asked me to test the boy's strength. And that I did." Sado harshly pressed his fingers over his closed gills of his left side, forcing the remanence of water to shift inside. It stung something horrible and made his body stiffen in defence, but the rekindling of scent was well worth it. A small seeping warmth tried to coil around his core once more, a tad stronger without the element of surprise ruining the familiar sensation.
"That was hardly a test, your pathetic tussle barely lasted five minutes before his grace found you." Her voice interrupting his thoughtless prodding and; strangely enough, startling him back into focus.
Grace, huh? It was something that had not gone unnoticed to the rest of the clan, but none would dare speak up about it. Save for Sado. "You know, you have quite the unusual fixation on that red one." For someone as devoted to Prima as she, for all her formalities, strict and precise actions. Yanun's infamous, unwavering reign broke down to an uncertain, stricken girl at the mere sight of Sidon. How could someone as weak as he be worth her interest?
"Don't change the subject." Raising her right hand slightly and making Sado take a step back.
"Very well, I will keep things serious from here on out. No need to harm me further, I need to recover swiftly in order to be of further use to you, my priestess."
"Humph. Indeed." She muttered before turning around, finding that he was now on his knees in a deep bow, as he should be. Then Yanun gave him a nod, a sign of permission to deliver his report.
"Under observation; he is a little under the average height of his kin, though has a slight difference in physical build. Easily a seasoned warrior from subtle routines and habits. As well seemingly unhindered by being born defected, leading and commanding small groups with little trouble. The confrontation however." He paused for a moment, searching through the building haze of his mind. "While he is incredibly strong and very skilled, most of it seems to be unnatural. It did not feel as though he had mounds of muscle nor was his movement or speed hindered as it should have for that kind of strength. As for the skill; even if he had bouts with other Zora or the Prince for that matter. He read my actions too well, as if I was a familiar opponent. In conclusion, I believe some of the tales hold truths, one being of favour from a deity... but there are few that still have yet to be proven possible."
"As in the four different magic powers." To which the Zora male nodded in agreement. "This would all make more sense if he was a primal, but even still, four- no. Not even three is possible." Though she recalled from Sidon's telling, that these were blessings from the champions. But there was no way for another's magic to linger on Link's being that long.
Sure, there was one way that she knew of that could recast the spell at will, if one had the right item, but that was of no concern for a warrior. However in the end it no longer interested her in the same way. "While strong he may be. Without Prima's recognition-"
"He has mine. And now that he is of no interest to you, I'm sure you won't care what happens to him."
Yanun just about ripped his tongue out, how dare he interrupt me. But realizing the words that he had boldly stated, quickly stalled her into a moment of confusion. "I don't see why you think I would care what things you take interest in."
"I also want to enact my right to the trials of Prima."
"W-what!? Now!? Forget it! That right belongs only to Hine! You renounced that right the day you let her take your place as Warlord."
"I believe the law goes 'Only the strongest may take the trials of Prima' and I do believe that I am the strongest. I just didn't want to play leader to a bunch of weaklings, so I let her win that fight." He sighed and heavily rolled his eyes before giving a murderously delightful grin. "But by all means, I will kill Hine in order to reclaim that right if that is what you desire, my priestess."
The woman growled at this man's insanity. He knew very well that she wouldn't let him just kill her warlord, not with how effective and skilled Hine was. But then she remembered something new that had come to light, something that only she had learned and began to chuckle. "Actually, I don't think you would have the power to do so any more."
His grin fell flat and all but growled out. "What."
"Hine's magic had awakened during the last battle and I think I'm the only mortal being left that could kill her. But no matter. You want to stake claim over a souse, fine. Better than you killing some of them after you're done." Yanun sighed and lazily rolled her wrist, enjoying the discomfort it brought Sado. Watching them squirm even though she wasn't doing anything. Yet. "So? Which souse do you want?"
"That's never mattered before..." He narrowed his eyes in displeasure, not at all liking her trying to pry. "I will only get a say after I complete the trials."
"You've never taken this much interest in a souse before. I'm honestly curious so tell me." And when he did not answer, her tone twisted from humoured to stone cold in a blink. "That's an order, warrior. I want to know whom you will be taking away from my watch."
"Pah-lease. I don't want other people's broken toys. Just what do you take me for?"
"Sado." His priestess warned darkly with narrow eyes.
"I will stake claim to Link."
Her eyes just about popped from her head. What- why would he want that sharp-ear? He wasn't even recognized by Prima. Unless he's-
"Oh yes~, priestess." He purred and bit his lips as he watched the realization wash over her face. "He is a souse. One that by far has the most delectable aroma I have ever experienced." But that wasn't even the best part, oh no, the part that Sado couldn't get enough of, that he couldn't keep himself from trembling over the very memory of it. Were Link's eyes, his fucking bright and fierce eyes.
Such raw strength, such pure courage, such unwavering righteousness. Such light. He was certainly the hero worshipped most of all in this land.
And, oh, Sado wanted nothing more than to break him. Piece by itty bitty piece, until he was weak, until he only knew fear, until he had no will to call his own. To snuff out that light. Till only the hollow husk remains for all to see.
"Do not act like a souse in heat while in my presence." The Zora woman grimaced in disgust and hastened to bring this to a close. "To prove your faith and strength to Prima you must obtain a land of wealth that they once had."
"That." He huffed out, not at all surprised to realize that he was being stirred into a frenzy. Once again caught himself unconsciously pressing into his gills to provoke the settled fragments of Link's scent. So faint, not even a full fledged heat and he was already losing himself to hunger. Either he was incredibly excited from the perfect find or that Link's pheromones were more potent than he thought. Mmm~ Perhaps both. "That is quite the impossible task."
"Silence. Your faith has always been lacking and your competition is Hine. Be thankful that Prima does not deny your challenge. They clearly have plans for you. Now begone from my sight, your state makes me ill."
~~~~~~ ҉ ~~~~~~
In the half hour Link had spent trying to track down Zelda, it was now pouring and the wind was whistling through the palace openings that had yet to be sealed shut. It was a good thing that his mare was safe in a stable and that they weren't on the road during all of this. But he was still here, exposed to many possible mishaps. He could have teleported out, if she hadn't swiped the slate. Heck he can't even use the shrine here to hunker down in. Though she wasn't wrong, it did belong to them both and honestly what bothered him the most was how easy he let his guard down.
He sighed and turned to the guilty puppy tailing him. [You wouldn't happen to know if there is a shop with a large herbal stock within the palace grounds by chance?]
"There is a place that comes to mind, but it isn't a shop." Sidon said with much regret. "It would be the infirmary, but you are welcome to take what you need."
[That will do, thank you and sorry for the trouble.]
"No need for that, my dear friend. Will you be needing access to anything else?"
[My saddlebag, a soup pot, a fireplace and somewhere others won't bother me.]
His heart sunk a little more from the request, but was not the least bit surprised. Being trapped somewhere was never pleasant. "I know just the place. Come, it is this way."
It was a little bit of a walk, but Sidon was able to send a servant to gather the items the Hylian had requested along the way. As they climbed the second flight of stairs, Link took notice that Sidon quickly turned his head down just before the first flash of lightning and clap of thunder that instantly followed. It seemed slightly odd to Link, but with lightning being such a great threat, it was probably a common occurrence for any Zora.
A little further down the hall on the left, they came to a stop in front of a door, but something seemed to be off about it. Looking back at the door across from this one, it did not match, their frames were smaller. In fact, the wall surrounding the thick frame looked tampered with.
There was no key needed as Sidon simply pushed the door open, barely even a creak was made, and gestured for him to enter. "Here you are. Please make yourself at home."
Though with no lock and ease of it all, Link wasn't so sure if this was really ideal. [Are you certain that this would be the best place to be undisturbed? I'm going to be working on sensitive tasks.]
"I swear unto you, at the price of my life, Hylia as my witness, that not even a guard would lay a hand upon this door. My dear sister, bless her soul, would not even come near this room unless I asked of it."
That was a startlingly heavy promise, it brought forth concern and he couldn't help but ask. But he went for a more lighthearted approach, just to be safe. [Why, is this some forbidden tomb?]
While it took great effort to keep his expression unaffected, the words had struck him to the core. Memories flashed around in his mind from all the many long years that this room had been a part of him. Tomb... That is a funny way of putting it.
"No, of course not. Now, you'll have to check in a bit to see if your things have been delivered. I shall come by later to see if there is anything else you need. Until then, my dearest friend." Sidon smiled, forcing his trademark to hide the uncomfortable feeling of this all. Within his power, he would make sure Link never learned the truth of this room. At least there weren't many people that were willing to speak of it.
[Until then.] He tried to smile back, but deep in his gut, as he watched the prince walk away, he knew that he had crossed a line somewhere. This is so much harder in person, but the stress of my approaching fever is likely not helping.
Walking inside, Link was completely surprised by the interior, it was a study. But it was like teleporting to another place all together, from a marble palace to a small cottage. Well, a cottage fit for a noble. The whole space was practically made of wood; floor, ceiling, walls, everything was made of fine carved wood. Save for the lone stone hearth.
After pushing the heavy door closed, he stepped further in, taking in the smaller details, noticing old with the new. Bookcases, wardrobes, chairs, and tables that held much love, carried telltale signs of repainting, staining and replacement parts. There were things that were too valuable that kept their wear, a short beaten-up wooden spear set upon the mantle, a long since faded sash hung across a wall, aged charcoal sketches framed all about the room.
And the new.
The new had him stop in his tracks just past the fireplace. Fine jewellery from far off regions displayed in a glass door bookcase. A dead ancient core with an assorted mix of gears and bolts twisted in silly ways filled its own shelf. Ornate boxes that once held delightful treats, was now full with odds and ends. Pieces of monsters and creatures alike in order with complementary research notes and diagrams on display across a table.
Link knew each of these items and flickering moments of the past appeared to dance over them as his eyes fell on each one. Each memory different, yet caring the same hopeful thought, that it would make him smile.
This is all...
Seeming only to notice now, at the heart of all this was a cabinet mounted on the wall. Only able to reach the bottom lip with his fingertips, Link quietly and slowly pulled the doors open. All neat and no doubt in order, was cubbyholes occupied by dozens of letters.
...the same.
His heart erupted, suddenly racing. With a hand pressed firmly against the betrayer caged inside, he took a few slow steps back. Looking over it all once more, Link hoped; prayed, that he hadn't hurt Sidon the same way. Because this pain he had, grew worse each time. This suffocating grip. This nauseating pressure. It was cruel, dreadful and attacked without warning. It made him feel ill, it made him want to run, it frightened him. It's the same? Is it the same?
And the only thing that helped him turn his head away, to breathe once more, was the tingling sensation blossoming across the nape of his neck. Trembling as it suddenly throbbed more strongly that it ever had before, roots digging towards his centre, his soul. And for a moment, Link thought his fever had truly begun. But as fast as it arrived, it faded away.
Leaving him only more irritated and worried. Damn it, focus. Don't get cocky, this isn't predictable yet!
~~~~~~ ҉ ~~~~~~
They swam lazily out through the underwater cavern that made up the district that had been given to the silver Zora. Each district was like a large dorm, numerous doors lined the walls of the flooded cave. The whole expanse of the floor; their common area, was a large colourful garden. Right above this area was a ten foot ring that was an opening to a cave above water. While there was fewer rooms, they were considerably larger, a total of three. One was where offerings to Prima were given, another was for where Priestess Yanun resided and the last was where the souses lived.
Sado figured it was a good first place to check as any, as she often stopped by to personally feed her claim. Breaching the surface, Sado carefully lifted himself onto the stone flooring. He hissed quietly from the returning weight of his wounds, the kind support that came from the water now gone. Glancing around, there was no one else in the immediate vicinity. But he took notice that one large wooden door had started to open.
That leads to the nest, doesn't it? Sado thought to himself, but seeing just who stepped out, he purred with a disturbingly delightful grin. "Lo and behold, just the primal I was looking for." Bringing a stop to the woman before she could even turn to close the door. "Might I have a word, Warlord Hine?"
She narrowed her eyes at him for a moment, most likely calculating whether or not this might be worth her time. Hine then pushed the door shut with her heel. Letting silence settle in before she answered, tone cold and hard. "Perish." Then she jutted her chin out, signalling for his turn.
Oh~ someone is in a good mood today. Standing tall with a hungry look, knowing just what word he wanted to say. Just the perfect single syllable that would flip her day on its head. "Kuu."
As predicted, in that instant, her usual composure collapsed and became wild. Teeth bared as she snarled a warning, hands open with claws at the ready, but Sado knew she would not attack him like this. Her shackle labelled as honour would keep her in place.
Continuing on, since she was in such a great mood to play. "Thank you for your time. I'll leave you to your precious little moments, who knows how long this bliss will last after all. Kuu, has never been very strong. I would be worried too, if my claim was that frail. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. Poor thing, such suffering, it would almost be kinder to end it all. Truly, I pray for you."
With incredible effort, she stiffly began to walk towards the door of their place of worship. Glaring, she spat. "How thoughtful of you. Come. Let us both pray for Prima's blessing."
"Nothing would delight me more~." Sado crossed his arms behind his back, following after with a bit of a skip in his step. How he enjoyed winning at these little games, Hine was one that almost always fought back, while she wasn't the best kind of toy. She wasn't broken yet.
The moment that they were alone and the door closed behind them, as expected Hine turned on him. With all the fury and power of a messenger of war, she growled out no harmless declaration. "Kuu is my claim. My souse. Threaten his life again and I will kill you. Honour be damned, I'll bear any sin to protect what is rightfully mine."
"Oh, I'll be borrowing Kuu tonight." He stated, ignoring her every word completely. "I'll likely be done with him after an hour, you'll hardly notice his absence."
The primal woman snapped, the very thought of this man coming near Kuu again. His pleading eyes while his expression remained otherwise dead. His trembling hands while his body acted like a lifeless doll. It made her lose control. "Fuck you! You won't so much as smell him, bastard!" Even with the few feet of distance separating them, she shot her palms up, as if shoving him away.
To Sado's absolute surprise, he was launched against the door with such great force, he was even pinned there. It brought back the pain of his injures with vigor. However that wasn't what angered him the most, it was the fact that Hine's new power was the almost the exact same. Sure, he had planned to push her into showing him what this new found magic of Hine's was. But perhaps he hadn't considered the additional factor of her own change these past three months.
Regardless, the towering man had dropped some of his guard, a mistake that had him on the other end of a full frontal assault. It was hard to breathe, his broken ribs only made it worse and if this kept up, he was sure there would be another one floating around. He couldn't even open his mouth to speak as the pressure grew. All he could do was glare as she approached, his head fin coiling- Wait!
Before she could realize her mistake, a possible sign of her lack of practice, the second he knew that she was within range, he retaliated. While heavy and practically useless on land, he managed to curl the tail-like fin towards his attacker, making contact with Hine's ankle. In the very same moment, her body seized up and began trembling as though she was freezing. It wasn't much and it wouldn't last long, yet it was enough for Sado to break free of the spell.
Gasping and coughing, a renewal of blood came up from reopened wounds. "How foolish. Even if you have the same power as Yanun, it's useless if you cannot wield it properly." Seething with rage, he moved closer to tower over her, coiling his head fin around her further in the process. "I'll only be letting this slide because you hold a large debt and one you can repay."
"C-curse you!" Her jaw rattled as she held her gaze, refusing to submit. Flinching at the feeling of the other's claws running over the burn scars that almost covered her entire lower body and arms.
"No, little one. It is you who is cursed." He then grasped her neck with a single hand, curling each finger around one, by one. He violently tilted her head back with bruising force and lowered himself to be slightly more her eye level. "While we both have similar goals, you're the only one that has something to lose. All because you wanted your own special little world. Now. We can both have what we want and you pay back the favours you owe or... Yanun learns the truth."
Sado let his words sink into this stubborn female's brain, he was in no rush to be anywhere. And the moment she blinked, he knew that she had caved into his demands. But remained fearless in the face of his true threat, with clenched teeth to stop the shudder of her jaw, Hine growled through rows of fangs. "You will return him as he is."
"Oh, how sickeningly, sweet of you!" A bright smile replaced his snarl and he almost laughed. "Before your little display there, I didn't think you would ever be able to clear your debt and you would be my pawn till the day you died. Or until I grew bored enough to kill you. But now, it may be very possible, you should be grateful, I'm letting you have the chance to be free. Don't squander this opportunity, little one. Now are you sure that you want to request another favour?"
Hine remained silent and Sado finally chuckled with delight, then patted her head. Like the smart, good little girl she was.
~~~~~~ ҉ ~~~~~~
It wasn't the most tactful thing she could have done, pick-pocketing Link like that, nor was flipping through the collection of photos. Whether or not it had been planned that way, she did not find any pictures that held any clues to what Link was up to. In fact, the last logged capture was quite a few months ago. So spying had turned up nothing.
At least there was a little bit of life back in his face from what she saw, it was a good start from completely blank. The Zora prince was having far better luck than her at getting Link to open back up. And Zelda couldn't deny the slight fear that she had completely reversed the progress by trapping him here. But she knew if she hadn't swiped the slate, he would have used it to escape the Domain. That's not to say she won't accept the repercussions if this does not turn out in her favour. But Zelda was confident it was a fairly big if.
Keeping a sharp eye out for a particular blond Hylian, Zelda wondered the guest wing aimlessly. She was uncertain as what to do with the spare time and there wasn't exactly anything she could offer to help with. Watching the rare Zora rush by with a crate of supplies, only for them to nearly drop it at the sound of thunder roaring outside.
Guards, elders, it didn't matter who they were or how old, the very sound and sight of the dancing electricity had them flinching. It was a fear that every Zora could not let go of and with very good reason.
"Oh?" Came a soft voice from behind the young woman, startling her right out of her boots. Turning around swiftly, Zelda saw that it was the Zora princess. "You are still here?"
"Ah, yes." She answered somewhat awkwardly as her heart was still racing from the fright she had been given. Yanun was unexpectedly quiet even with all her dangling jewellery. But Zelda took notice that she was alone, not even a tailing guard standing near the edges of the hall. "Are you often unaccompanied, Princess Yanun?"
"By a bodyguard? Not usually, but Sado currently has another... matter to attend to." She solemnly replied, not the least bothered by the lack of protection.
"So it is by choice then." She spoke with a dejected look. Recalling the trouble it brought her in the past to even suggest walking around the castle without a knight.
"Why do you ask, High Councillor Zelda?"
"I apologize. I did not mean anything by it, I was just a little surprised. When I was a princess, I was followed everywhere by at least two guards and never did I have a say in the matter."
Puzzled, Yanun then questioned. "Was? Were you overthrown?"
At that Zelda laughed a little. "Goodness, no. It's a rather long and complicated story, but let us just say that I stepped down."
A rather bright and loud strike suddenly flooded the palace, the vibrations could even be felt throughout the floors. However, to the Hylian's bewilderment, the Zora before her wasn't even fazed. Musing lightly over the disturbance as she glanced down the hall. "A rather large storm this is turning out to be. Isn't it?"
"You are not afraid of the lightning?"
"Why would you presume otherwise?" Yanun faintly glared, not at all appreciating this type of ignorance. But recalling the reactions Zelda had given her last night, it was perhaps best to move on and tread delicately. "Well, never mind that. If you are here, then is the Hero Link still here?"
"He is. Are you wanting to meet him?"
"We have already met. I simply forgot to ask him about the location of the leviathan bones, something I foolishly forgot about during the commotion."
"If that is all you need, I can easily provide you with the information."
"Can you really?" She double checked, it wasn't completely unlikely that someone of her supposed rule would know of something that large within her territory. But with the way Yanun has seen other species pick their leaders, well... it wouldn't be the first time that they were incompetent.
Zelda beamed with glee, happy to share the relics of her homeland. She quickly turned the slate on and began to scroll through hundreds of photos. The Hylian looked forward to getting to know the Zora princess more. While she had been caught off guard before by her harsh words, Zelda couldn't forget that there was a shy, timid woman in there as well. Crushing over the prince no less! Trying to withhold her giggling, it reminded her of a certain someone from long ago. With a picture of one found, she flipped it around to show Yanun. "Why of course!"
~~~~~~ ҉ ~~~~~~
Link wouldn't deny that when the door began to open, it made him tense in ready of an attack. Even if it was the second time today. Just as it was the same at an hour past noon, Sidon ducked through the doorway.
[Is it really supper time already?] He asked as he relaxed, reassuring himself again that only Sidon would enter this room.
"It will be in about an hour's time. I came early to invite you to join us."
Returning his gaze to the notes sprayed out on the floor in front of him, Link weighed out the best option at this point in time. While Zelda had said that she would see him at dinner and it was a good chance to get his hands back on the slate; if she didn't forget it in her room or something. Link didn't like this notion that she had done all of this on purpose. Tricking him into reading the letter, knowing that Sidon was becoming sick with worry over the sudden halt of contact and that the guilt would be too much for Link to handle right now. Then to top it all off with chaining him down at the first opportunity.
No, regardless of his paranoia and stressing over the situation. The more important fact of the matter was his body and it didn't help that he had been taking potions when he didn't need to. Panic, as pathetic and vulnerable as it made him sound, panic was all it was. All he was getting was the warning signs, the fever itself wasn't likely to show up until tomorrow sometime.
Looking back towards his host, he finally answered. [Thank you for the offer. But I would prefer not to.]
To which the prince seemed to have expected that answer and gave a nod of understanding. But he did not turn to leave, he simply stood there, giving a slight awkward feeling to the room. In the silence between them, Link found himself examining Sidon, trying to figure out if he was being given a cue of some sort. The Zora's eyes were hanging heavy, there seemed to be darkness around them as well and over all his scales looked paler than usual. His head fin was resting on his shoulder instead of gently curving from his head. There was even a slight close of his hands before hanging limp again.
[You alright, big guy?]
"Hm? Oh, yes. I'm fine, it's... just a headache." To further empathize this, Sidon gently rubbed his crest. While Link didn't fully believe him, he let it be. Though was a little surprised from the next thing that the prince said. "Would you mind if I joined you for a while? At least until dinner?"
Link shuffled his papers together, closed the tome and filed them away nicely back into his bag. Then patted the space next to him, inviting the large man over. With the door quickly shut, Sidon gratefully took the offered spot with a soft 'thank you'.
Soft spoken Sidon was something that Link found concerning and it was starting to happen more often. But seeing the tension rolling off his shoulders and hearing him breathe a little easier, the Hylian suspected that the Zora was trying to escape from something. Which probably makes two of them.
Link tossed in another piece of wood into the hearth, adding a little more brightness to the darkening room. Though he wasn't about to let awkward silence settle back in so he tapped the floor to get the other's eyes on him. [Hiding from the princesses again?]
He expected him to get flustered like he did at breakfast over the teasing. However it seemed to make his mood drop further. "Ah, no. I haven't seen either of them since this morning."
[Been busy with the storm then?]
To this Sidon sighed heavily and closed his eyes for a long moment. "More like avoiding it. Storms like this make things difficult for me and normally I would wait it out in here, as it helps."
Reaching out, Link gave Sidon's arm a firm squeeze, in which he hoped was a comforting manner. The feeling of the Zora's smooth scales and warmth radiating underneath, was pleasantly satisfying to his own tense nerves. When Sidon's small smile was expressed in return, Link knew that the feeling was mutual.
Though, trailing his fingertips along, Link could feel every subtle transition from scale to scale. From the large expanding over open spaces to the small changing into something closer to Link's own skin. Upon grazing his hand down the smooth expanse of Sidon's arm and to find the hand upturned, as if offering him to continue. Link realized that he was shamelessly touching Sidon and he flinched away. Shooting an apologetic look up at the taller man, whom seemed to have regained some colour to his face. Perhaps a little extra, but with the glow of the fire, it was hard to be sure. But Link was certainly flustered.
"Worry not, my body must feel pretty weird to you. I understand that I'm pretty strange to other races." He said calmly and turned his hand away, even if he was disappointed. Sidon wanted the contact, drawn into the relief and comfort it brought.
[There's nothing strange about Zora or you. It feels fine, like a riverbed of pebbles or snake skin.]
"Snake skin, huh?" He smirked a little, doing a little bit of revenge teasing, though the riverbed comment was very flattering.
[What's wrong with that? I like the way it feels.] Link tried to defend his claim, but only furthered his own embarrassment and the look of surprise on the other's face did not help. [Look, never mind that.] Desperately trying to think of a way to change this awkward topic, he glanced around the room for something, anything. [What's up with this place that keeps everyone from it? It looks like a normal study to me. Is there a law that forbids it or something?]
Sidon visibly withered from this question. "You could say that."
[Why? I understand not wanting to be disturbed, but to the point that no one even touches the door?]
"Link, please." He dropped his head into his hand. "I would rather never speak of it and just keep this as a place of safety. Please, don't ask about it any further."
Safety? It made his chest feel heavy at the thought that Sidon felt he needed such a secure place. It brought forth many new questions, with all good intentions of fixing what made him feel unsafe in his own home. But if Sidon wasn't ready to talk about it, then Link wouldn't force him.
So he shuffled a little closer and gave the red arm a light tap. It took a moment for Sidon to lift his head up, most likely expecting more questions from the grim look on his face. [I'll do everything I can to make sure you're safe. If you're ever in trouble, you can call on me, send a Rito to come scream in my ear. I'll come running on foot if I have to. You know that, right?]
It had brought up his mood a bit and Sidon gave a small smile, to show it was appreciated.
[And If-] He hesitated for a moment, considering the fact that; while Link needed a secure place until he could leave the Domain, due to the risk of his arriving fever. This was still Sidon's haven from the storm and whatever else he needed to hide from. [you are sleeping here tonight. Do you mind if I stay? And as long as the smell of mint doesn't bother you.] He would try his luck elsewhere if he had too.
The poor prince's heart suddenly spiked and his mind was swimming with all possible implications of that sentence. He and Link, spending the night here, together? By Hylia, this was not the time for him to be suddenly flustered over Link sitting next to him, lounging in Zora armour. While the Hylian looked great on any given day, no matter what he covered his skin with. But the Zora armour, was a personal favourite, it let Sidon dream of a world with them of the same race. Where being together would be so much simpler.
"C-certainly and worry not, I cannot smell anything." Was all he could manage to say at this very moment.
[At all?] Link expected him to say that he hardly notices it or that he likes the smell or something. But to not smell anything. It was a complete surprise.
"I couldn't even tell you what fire smells like." Gesturing to the hearth with his nose.
While it was selfish, Link relaxed immensely and felt grateful for Sidon to lack his sense of smell. Before realizing that admitting it also meant that he was afraid. It didn't take much thought to figure out what, with him so fixated on scent. Link was afraid that a miscalculated fever could destroy everything between them. The bond, the trust, the support, the freedom to be themselves in weakness and strength. All possibly ruined because Link still couldn't fully control it with suppressants he had.
He felt ridiculous, wrapped up in such extreme 'what ifs', when he didn't even know if Zora could even be like M or himself. And as Link took in a deep breath, all there was, was fire. In fact, Sidon didn't seem to have any scent to him at all. Though, perhaps if Link was closer, maybe...
Link froze when he realized that Sidon was silently staring at him, while Link was blatantly examining him. However, Link could tell that he was uncomfortable, lips pressed in a fine line, curling his fingers in tightly and hiding the claws from view, then darting his eyes away. Link's pulse started to pick up as jumbled thoughts began to swarm with how he was going to explain himself.
He had done it again; he had gotten immersed with Sidon's physical presence again. Link felt embarrassed with his lack of awareness and control, yet it didn't feel bad. It wasn't the shameful or the frustrating kind. More like silly or happy, but nervous...? And why did thinking about it make it worse? Is this just another symptom? Just before he could begin to form words, a powerful wave spread across his neck, leaving it in painful, tingling knots. It caught him so off guard that Link grabbed the back of his neck and yelped.
Startled from the unexpected sound from the mute man, Sidon automatically resumed his focus on Link and leaned over in search of an injury. "Link, are you alright?" Sidon asked in concern as he carefully pulled the smaller hand away, but he did not see any bruising or any sign of a wound peeking out from the silver collar.
Any lifelong, trained reflex Link anticipated; from being grabbed and not expecting it, simply died. He had felt the shock through his nerves, but his muscles hadn't tensed and his body hadn't fought. All of his defences faded and for a second, there was nothing. Then a sense of calm eased its way through him and as strange as it was, Link was grateful for it; grateful that he didn't attack Sidon.
[Just sore,] Link offered for an answer, after pulling his hand from Sidon's gentle hold. [from the fight earlier.]
"Why didn't you say so sooner?" A tad annoyed Link had kept his pain hidden from him. Though thinking of the brawl he had caught them in, it made him angry to know that Sado; that someone like him, had dared to lay a hand on Link. But his instinct to tend to Link and ease his suffering outweighed any hostility for the other Zora. So, Sidon rested his palm against Link's shoulder blade, while his thumb sat in the space between his neck and pauldron. "Is it just here that hurts?"
The armour hindered much of the contact, but Link still felt his weight and it was comforting. Soothing. Like a warm blanket on a chilly day. That addictive, inviting kind of heat that you just want to curl deeply into and fall asleep. Leaning into the touch, Link gave a breath of relief. [Yeah, for the most part.]
Sidon smiled when Link welcomed the contact and despite the clear deflection, Sidon felt that the worst was yet to come for Link. It was a strange feeling, of knowing something was happening or more accurately, going to happen to Link. Like a deep part of him was telling him; soon. Yet, not the same kind your gut tells you about danger or that something is wrong. But to be ready; to protect, to tend to his cherished person when the time comes. Not that he needed any reason, if Link wanted to share this place for safety and found comfort in him, Sidon was happy to provide.
"I can help, if you want. I'm able to do an old Zora trick. Well, it may be just... odd to you. But I promise it works wonders on a sore body."
Link thought about the offer of a massage from Sidon and it honestly didn't sound too bad. That is; till he felt Sidon flex his hand, feeling the strength of his fingers pressing into Link's flesh through the protective layer. Sweet mother of mercy. That felt good, too good, satisfying the ache in his neck with the strong hold. It had meant to be a harmless gesture, Link knew that. But his stomach was suddenly in knots with the thoughts that quickly followed; of Sidon's hands on his body. It made him realize that this was a dangerous idea.
He tried to swallow the hard lump in his throat as the desire began to build and he pulled away from the prince. [Another time.] He quickly told Sidon, before the man thought he had done something wrong. I just need another dose and I'll feel normal again. His hand was already digging around in his bag for a vial, though stopped when Sidon spoke up.
"I have a gift for you." Sidon began a new topic, fiddling nervously with one of his fins.
Taking the welcomed opportunity to return things back to normal. Link gave his best smile and hoped it didn't look as awkward as it felt. [Another opal shaped like a crab claw?]
The Zora answered with a slight smirk. "Continue to tease me about that and I may just hold on to it till your birthday."
This time, the emotion wasn't forced and Link gave him a betrayed scowl. Sidon already knew that Link didn't remember that kind of information. [You'd hold on to it forever then.]
"Exactly."
[Jerk.] Link huffed and gave him a light punch in the arm. But it was something that they both needed, this silliness to break up the strange mood that had built between them. A soft beat after and they both chuckled, breathing easier. [So, what did you get me this time?]
Sidon got off the floor to get the gift rather than answer. The Zora procured a wooden box from atop a wardrobe and then offered it to the Hylian as he returned to their side.
Once the box was in his hands, Link looked it over once. It seemed too small to store a helmet inside, no sound was made as he rolled it upside down and there was nothing written or drawn on it. Opening it was a little difficult, taking a fair bit of wiggling to get the tight lid free. Inside was completely filled with packed straw, likely to keep whatever was within from damage. He had never received a gift from Sidon that required this much care before, it was both exciting and worrisome. As he began to carefully dig around, he hoped that it wasn't something fragile, he honestly wasn't the best at handling things like that.
Grasping what felt like cool plate, he pulled it out and shook the remaining straw off. The familiar dark brown and beige metal caught his eye before he noticed the dim glow of orange and blue. It was curved with a tapering two inch thickness at its centre, it had a short glass dome on the top with a thin rubber trim, there were many small openings lining the sides and the fabric bordered on the rubbery side. It was some sort of mask for sure, even if he couldn't make out the design. But without a doubt, this was ancient tech, it looked just like all the other armour pieces he had.
"It's a diving mask, so you can breathe underwater. Well for a short period of time anyway." Sidon supplied before Link could ask. "I put in a request with Robbie after the festival all those years ago, took a lot longer than I thought for it to be made."
[Thank you.] Setting the mask back into the box, Link signed with a bright grin. [Now I am looking more forward to our rematch. Hope you're ready to be the cause of your defeat!]
To which he laughed and returned a grin of his own. "Don't think that I'm going to just give up my title that easily."
~~~~~~ ҉ ~~~~~~
Sidon was getting really sick of all the nervous looks he was getting from walking down the halls. Even his own father had eyed him carefully over dinner. Yes, he understood that this was one of the bigger storms and that this year has been particularly bad. But no, it didn't mean that he had to be confined to that room like a child. Hasn't for years.
He focused on returning to Link, ignoring the pulsing buzz in his crest and the humming energy building up under his scales. It was something that he had known all his life. He could handle it a few more moments and then he'd be able to relax.
However, this Sidon didn't think he could handle. As he entered the room, Link was giving the cooking pot one last stir and then proceeded to stretch his arms above his head. A harmless action. But the image was already burned into his mind; the way the armour hugged him, the strength that rippled through his body, tassets only enhancing the arc of his form.
Fantasies he did not realize he had, flooded his mind, of Link waiting for him, ready for him. Sidon's mouth had never felt so dry. Damn. Cursing at whatever foul magic was at play, such carnal desires had never struck him before Link's return. But fuck, he'd be lying if the idea of burning off the energy wasn't appealing. Alone. He informed, as if to reassure himself of his control.
[Welcome back.] Link said with a smile before bending over for the cloth on the floor. Oblivious to the torment that he was subjecting the prince too.
Unless Link wanted it too. He choked on his words at first, but was able to take his gaze off the Hylian. Remembering what he had in hand and used it to redirect his thoughts. "I brought you something to eat." He informed as he pulled the door closed behind him.
When Sidon looked his way again, Link signed his thanks. [I forgot.] Then used the cloth to safely remove the brewing elixir from the heat, setting it aside to cool.
"Please don't tell me that is a habit of yours." He said as he handed over the covered, silver platter. Though when the man just took it and sat at the desk without another word. Sidon couldn't help but press the issue. "Link."
[What?] The Hylian turned to him with no effort to hide his guilt-ridden face. [You said not to tell you.]
"How can someone; who loves food as much as you do, forget they haven't eaten?"
[I normally don't, it's... it's just when I've got a lot of work.]
Sidon then pointedly looked at the mess of ingredients, vials and such scattered at the foot of the fireplace. "Then you could do with less work. I'll tidy up, so you eat." Out of the corner of his eye, Sidon saw Link stiffen as he began to gather the notes and books. But he was not going to have any discussion on the matter.
The prince found cleaning did wonders for him. With every item removed from the floor and stored away in either Link's bag or the crate it was delivered in, Sidon's mind felt clearer. Wanting to do more, he moved on to prepare for the night. Making his way to a large wardrobe, he opened the doors to reveal dozens of cushions stuffed inside. Many were of different sizes, colours and shapes as Sidon tossed them out onto the floor. Not caring where they landed for the time being and then opened the next wardrobe. Here there was mainly fine linen, with half reserved for a particular plush, but he ignored it and he grabbed two covers.
He took his time arranging the pile into a suitable bed, fussing over placement of certain pillows. All the while stealing glances at Link, making sure he ate and that he was enjoying the meal. When everything was finished and Link fed, Sidon was left feeling lighter. Pleased with the outcome as he sat on the nest of cushions and faced the hearth. Watching the small flames dance before Link walked in front of him to catch his attention.
[I'm just going to fill the vials, unless you're going to do that for me too.] Clearly teasing the man for mothering him, if the smirk was anything to go by.
Sidon rolled his eyes and huffed, watching as Link sat down to start. "By all means, make fun of my concern for your wellbeing."
Then there was silence. It wasn't awkward or anything, just quiet and Link didn't seem to mind as he carefully poured the purple liquid. And Sidon, he was lost in his thoughts.
Having the knight here in person and the time to be with him, it made things a bit clearer. While Zelda had claimed to have no luck even after a month, Sidon could see the difference in the course of a day. Going from brief and strict, to slowly a bit more like his true self, becoming casual and relaxed. Link was still very much tense and throwing his guard up, but it was progress. The prince was going to take all he could get and maybe, just maybe find out what caused this.
"Link?" Sidon called, prompting Link to hum in reply and glance at him. "Why did you stop writing?" He asked calmly, trying to come off as laid-back as possible and not trigger Link into becoming defensive. "I know you told me in your last letter that you had become busy. But that isn't really an answer."
There was no physical reaction from Link, remaining calm as he focused on filling the small potion bottles. And while Sidon couldn't explain it, he could feel Link bristle like a cornered animal. Shit.
"I won't force you and I trust you. It's just... I worry, you know?" Sidon tried to recover and give Link an easy way out. But the silence that came was long and nerve racking, till Link sealed and put away the last elixir.
[I know.] Link began and shuffled on his spot from the floor to face Sidon. [And, I'm sorry for cutting you out like I did. I don't want too either.] Though Sidon could tell he had more to say and simply waited. Watching as Link's composed mask began to crumble into uncertainty. [I just don't want to drag anyone else into this mess unless I absolutely have to.]
It was an opening and as much as Sidon wanted to rejoice, he had to tread carefully. "Is it dangerous?"
[If I'm careful, it's no different my usual duties.]
"Well, that is relieving to hear. Are you worried that your knights might not be ready? To aid you with such a delicate task, that is."
Link's hands twitched into fists for a split second. [They have different assignments for the job, they are more than capable.]
"You're working alone?"
[In a way...]
Sidon could see Link's building hesitation and as much as he didn't want too, it was probably best that he ends the prying here. Better than getting fully blocked out again. Progress is progress, he reminded himself and gave Link a small smile. "I see. Then, I wish you luck in completing your mission as swiftly as possible."
Watching as Link relaxed and even return a smile, Sidon knew he made the right call. [Thank you. I hope it can be over soon. I don't want to keep you waiting on that promise forever.]
"The one from the festival?"
To which Link confirmed with a nod before getting to his feet and started to work on the buckles of his armour. While Sidon also took the cue to finish preparing for the night, he couldn't help but focus on that day long ago. Of what their promise entailed. And as he thought, his body moved out of habit. Standing up, retrieving the Lynel plush from the wardrobe to set on the bed and then began removing his adornments. As he placed them all on the table beneath his letter cupboard, however. Sidon was stirred from his mind and placed his hand against its smooth surface.
A light chuckle made Sidon turn around to find Link stripped down to his shorts and running his hands down the Lynel's muzzle, like he was petting a pony. It might as well have been a pony, with the size of it coming up under Link's chest. Odd. Perhaps, the man had also grown some since then, as he could have sworn the plush had been up to their shoulders before. But Link was quick to notice his staring and spun the plush around to face Sidon, grinning as he signed. [You kept this as well?]
As well? Sidon blinked in a bit of surprise before looking back at his display of treasures and at his hand still upon the cupboard. So, Link recognized it all? He let his hand slip down the door before he turned back to Link. "Of course I did. Don't you keep things too?"
Link paused from messing around with the mane and Sidon realized that he was fidgeting, bashful as he answered. [Well... ya. Why wouldn't I?]
"Every letter?"
The Hylian looked back at the plush to pick at a button eye and gave a small nod, though the Zora wouldn't be so easily fooled at his attempt to hide his expression. The man's ears were pink, embarrassed for whatever reason when he knew the other had done the same.
Don't tell me.
Since Link had shown up last night. These moments kept happening between them. The way he caught Link looking at him. Those emotions that would dance across his face, even if it was quickly countered or deflected with words. Sidon knew that Link would be there for him. That Link cherished him. That Link couldn't bear the thought of losing him.
This has to mean something. It can't just be a coincidence. There had to be a chance, right? That Link also saw Sidon in the same light.
Sidon's heart fluttered in his chest as he approached Link on the bed. Goddess above; this situation and the imagery, Hylia was truly forcing his hand here. As he knelt at the edge and Link tensed, it did not go unnoticed. But if he thought about it a moment longer, he doubted he would be able to bring himself to say anything.
Grabbing a cover, Sidon swung it up and over Link's head. The fabric barely had a moment to dance around the Hylian before he was pulled towards the Zora with it. Stumbling over the uneven surface, Link caught himself on Sidon's biceps, preventing from crashing into the man. Bewildered, Link looked up at him from under the edge of the cover.
"Link, listen-" Sidon was beyond flustered and his hands quickly began trembling. With the small warrior fully focused on him, it made him even more nervous. There was so much that had built up in his throat, there was so much he wanted to say. So much he wanted the man to understand. "It's time I stopped guessing and start confessing."
In the moment of shock washing over Link's face, Sidon hurried to get out what he could before the other man said anything. "I don't want you to leave. I don't want our connection to be only through letters. I want to be able to care for you, to touch you, to hold you. I want you here, not just in the Domain, but with me. Because, I'm in love with you, Link."
If he could speak his voice would surely waver. [In love with me?] The very idea that Sidon would hold such an interest in him never once crossed his mind.
"Yes, Link." He spoke softly and released the tension on the cover, but still kept his fist balled up in it. Looking down at him, Sidon wasn't sure if Link was nervous or worried and he didn't want Link to feel like he was trapped. Forced into complying. "What about you?"
Link was certain that something was breaking, something was falling apart and he was desperately trying to grasp at the pieces. [Where is this coming from-] Link tried to back his way out of this like he had done so many other times, but Sidon was on to him.
"Don't treat me like I wasn't there; like I only cared and valued you after you defeated the Calamity. I'm not them. And I love you, Link. Not your title. So, please, don't run and face me head on." He was serious, yet gentle with his words. With the hardest part over, of finally saying what he wished he could have written on paper long ago. He just wanted to know how Link felt while now knowing that Sidon's affections ran deeper than friendship. "Even if you hurt me... I'll survive and you'll still be my dearest friend... but I would appreciate an answer."
[I... don't know.] Saying no could ruin so much. But saying yes wouldn't be right. Link was so conflicted, yes or no, it was suffocating. He'd rather Sidon let it go, to forget and pretend none of this had happened so they could continue like nothing had changed. So he didn't have to hurt him.
[I don't know.] Link said again with shaking hands and searched for any pain in his dear friend's expression. For he was in all sorts of pain and he wished that he could find the words to explain it clearly. Because he truly cared for Sidon, more than anything and he will always be someone that Link would give anything for. But Link didn't know if it was love and the one thing he didn't want to do was lie, to give him false hope.
Yet Sidon just smiled gently, grateful for his honesty. "Then all I can ask is, would you be willing to give me a chance? The chance to court you, that is."
From how quickly Link nodded in reply, he surprised even himself and he felt greatly embarrassed right after. Though it didn't change anything. Whatever Sidon wanted; if Link could give it to him, then he could have it. Be it as a partner or a weapon. However, Sidon's brilliant smile and rosy cheeks made it worth it. Then Link felt his heart jump as Sidon leaned in, only for him to suddenly pull away.
"Sorry, um, may I kiss you?" He asked, looking a little ashamed, but it did nothing to cover up his clear excitement. Eager to be affectionate with him in ways that he could not as just a friend.
Link couldn't stop the anxious breath that escaped as a new kind of tension rushed through him. A mix of heat bubbled up along with it, as it felt like his stomach was doing flips. Link tried to push down the absurd feeling. It's just a kiss. And nodded.
When Sidon lifted a hand to his face, Link flinched his eyes closed before contact with his cheek was made. Sidon was careful of his claws as he slipped his fingers over Link's skin and around into his loose hair. As Sidon tilted his head back, he placed his lips on Link's softly, just the lightest of touch. A nervous and delicate kiss that only lasted a moment. But heaven all mighty, it was everything Sidon ever needed.
Yet he hadn't been aware that Link had held his breath, till he felt the gentle shuddering gasp across his lips. And Sidon was struck with a sensation similar to when he saw Link again for the first time in four years. A sensation of deafening drums of thunder all around him, the weightlessness of his body like electricity over water. How his soul surged, ready to burst. How the air was too dry to breathe. Then it all blasted away; like a bolt of lightning striking a tree, in a matter of seconds after drawing back from Link.
The relief he felt after being released from that overwhelming sensation was- it was almost pleasurable. Like his body and soul had been scrubbed clean. He didn't know who was shaking, though what did it matter? From the look on Link's face, he must have felt it too.
Sidon's breath hitched before he grasped Link's hair tightly and hungrily dove back in, kissing him harder. It felt so right, and gods, he didn't want it to end. He didn't think this couldn't get any better, till he felt the man's hands reach out and touch him. Though Link flinched away when he felt them tense in response. Sidon was quick to use his free hand to grab and pull them back in. Briefly, he parted their kiss, enough that their lips still brushed against one another while he spoke. "It's alright, I was just surprised. You're allowed to touch me." Then he moved to place a tender peck high on his jawline before whispering in his ear. "I want you to touch me."
As he let Link's hands go, Sidon continued to gently trail kisses along his jaw. He could feel the hesitation in Link's fingers as he spread them over his chest and Sidon did his best to encourage him as he leaned into the touch. A heartbeat later, Sidon shivered at the feeling of one hand gliding over his body to grasp at the back of his neck and the other trailing down his arm for his hand. His heart fluttered for a moment as Link held his hand in his, such a sweet gesture. But it didn't end at that, as Link pulled Sidon's hand to rest on his hip and Sidon's heart stopped.
Hylia, was this really happening? Sidon lifted his head and was about to say something, but then Link silenced him with a kiss. In which Sidon was happy to receive, ecstatic that Link was returning the affection and he forgot about the words that lingered on his tongue. And as Link leaned back, Sidon gladly followed.
He hadn't even noticed the position they were in till Sidon felt something brush at his sides. Sidon didn't need to look to know that it was the other's knees, drawn up to allow him to settle between Link's legs. And that brought Sidon to snap his hands to the space next to Link, breaking away from the kiss and quickly pushed himself up over Link. He had asked to kiss Link, nothing more.
Though, seeing the smaller man gaze up at him while flushed and softly panting, and Sidon knowing that he had done that to him. The hunger that washed over him and the desire that coiled in his gut was stronger than he imagined. He could hardly wait to hear what sounds he could draw out of him. To satisfy Link's every need and bring him to a state of bliss for hours.
Sidon had to stop this here.
So he took a deep breath to try and compose himself while he sat up. Pulling away from Link's touch completely. "Wait, I... we shouldn't."
Link's blush spread down his neck as he looked to Sidon with a mix of surprise and shame. [You mean you didn't want to...?]
He chuckled awkwardly. "Believe me, it's not a matter of want." Because Sidon wanted all of Link, anything that he was willing to give. But, this had to wait and he was willing to wait. Desire pooling in his gut be damned. "It's more about what you are comfortable with and making sure you are prepared."
[I've never... done this, but you can touch me however you want.] Link could see the sudden tremble that ran through Sidon and Link felt a rush of excitement, realizing just how badly Sidon wanted this. Wanted him. It was strange, any other time someone desired to have him, Link was indifferent. But with Sidon, it was many emotions and he craved more. [You can have me however you want.]
"Hylia." Sidon cursed, he didn't think he'd be the first to taste him and now Link was offering to just eat him up like that? Fuck, he wanted to, he wants too so badly. With his hunger and instinct rushing through him, all he needed to do was give in. To take what was being offered.
"No." Sidon tried not to growl out, but he was still breathing rather heavily and that made it difficult. Reaching out, he pulled the surprised Hylian to sit up. "No, for many reasons."
[It's alright!] Link insisted. What had upset Sidon badly enough for him to start growling at him?
"And I believe you, and I do want to hold you in such a way, Link. But for tonight, could we just enjoy this moment?" It was easy for a smile to return to his face, Sidon was vibrating with joy at recalling Link allowing to court him. And let him kiss him too! It was a dream come true. "Holding you close, to cuddle as we sleep would be just as amazing."
Though Link still looked unconvinced, frowning as he asked. [You sure?]
"Absolutely." Flashing his teeth this time as he smiled and then flopped down on the bed next to Link. But when he saw that Link was still holding doubt, Sidon figured that maybe something else about it was bothering him. "What's wrong?"
[Did I,] Link sighed, becoming a tad frustrated with the man. [did I do something wrong?]
"No, of course not! My choice wasn't because of you."
[Then why are you growling at me?]
"I'm... not?"
Now he was just getting angry. Why was Sidon being so childish, what, was he pouting too? He wasn't being loud about it, but Link could still hear him! He had been growled at from beasts, monsters and people alike; he knew very well what it sounded like. Just how long did he plan to keep this up? Rumbling at him with every intake and outtake like some sort of pissed off Lynel.
Sidon was starting to look really puzzled, even a bit hurt, with Link glaring at him. "Link, I'm honestly-"
[Wait.] His face suddenly went slack, emotionless as he stared at the Zora for a long moment. Listening carefully; it was just as rhythmic, yet much deeper in tone and softer in volume. [Are you... purring?]
He tilted his head in response, mouthing the last word silently. But something must have clicked as Sidon's eyes widened and blood rushed to his cheeks. "You mean this?" Gesturing vaguely at himself.
Link snorted from his attempt to stifle a laugh, grinning as he rested against Sidon's chest. Feeling him softly vibrate with every breath only confirmed it. [Holy shit, you are purring! I didn't know Zora's were like cats too.]
Sidon chuckled. "We call it bellowing. But I can understand your confusion now, both with the growling and purring. I didn't think anything of it when I started, for Zora it can be just an extension of how one is feeling or another form of communication."
[Can you control it?]
"Usually. Though it happens subconsciously from time to time."
[How come I'm only hearing it now, is it because you're really happy?]
"Well, with what one can do with it; and since so few can actually bellow, it's not polite to do so casually."
[What one can do with it?] Link echoed.
Instead of answering the question, Sidon paused his purring and patted his chest, beckoning Link to climb on top. Curious as to what Sidon was up to, Link moved to sit on the large Zora's belly. An amused huff came from the man before guiding the other to lay down, so the Hylian's head rested under his chin and their chests touched. "Are you still sore?"
Link nodded, he was, but nothing he couldn't ignore right now. When his fever started, then it would become unbearable. At that, Link became rigid, becoming unaware that Sidon began rumbling again. Because all Link could focus on was how much of a fool he had been just a little while ago. He had gotten so caught up in the moment, so lost in the feeling of what Sidon was doing, thrown in a right stupor at the fact he actually enjoyed the experience. That he had forgotten that Sidon didn't know. Link had agreed to the courting, was willing to partake in sex and Sidon didn't even know. He had spent hours; earlier today no less, worrying over Sidon finding out about his body and Link just about laid it all out for him to see.
But his own predicament was just a bridge to the real problem, of everyone else struggling, he couldn't go with the prince and leave things how they were. The knight couldn't be his, not yet. Link swiftly sat up, startling Sidon into silence and before he could open his mouth, Link apologized. [I'm sorry. I meant every word I said. But in the moment, I disregarded my current duties and there is one that I simply cannot ignore. So I can't-]
"Stay? I know." Link blinked in surprise and Sidon just laughed softly. Even though Sidon was smiling, his eyes were sad. "Don't give me that look, I've known you for years. You can't leave things unfinished. And you'll still leave tomorrow. So," He paused, reaching out to brush some of the hair from Link's face, relishing in the fact that he could. "I'll wait until you return from your mission, before I court you."
[I'm sorry.]
"Enough of that and rest." Sidon pulled him back down, cuddling him. "I'm happy to have even this." He resumed his deep purr as he pulled a cover over them. "But do know I'll be sending a love letter every week. Full of horribly drawn hearts."
Link laughed softly as he began to relax into the steady rhythm, the gentle rumble that sank right down to his bones. The weight was slipping right off him in a matter of minutes and even the ache in his gut faded away.
"Feeling better?" Sidon whispered, but he got no reply, just the start of peaceful snoring. He placed a tender kiss to Link's forehead. "Sweet dreams, my love."

"For such a divine place, you'd think it would be better guarded." Sado mused aloud before looking down at the Hylian struggling within his grasp. Their glaring blue eyes were almost missed if not for the faint glow of Vah Ruta lighting the depths of the reservoir. "Well I guess that's just unfortunate, no one will get to see your performance, little one."
His ears were aching from the pressure and even if he looked to the surface he wasn't sure if he was fast enough to make it before drowning. Even without the boulder shackled to his ankle. In the darkness of night, clouded, storming and without moonlight, the water seemed endless. As his lungs were starting to burn and the only relief he could get was to let a few bubbles slip free.
Sado seemed to have found an entrance, as he was suddenly yanked forward by the Zora's swift swimming. While there was light from the glow of the beast, he could barely see the halls, pillars and platforms. More air was leaving in streams of bubbles, his strength was failing him, but it didn't stop him from trying to pry the large hand from his wrist.
"Oh, looky here." Sado purred and then slammed the Hylian to the ceiling, forcing a strangled gasp from them. "An air pocket, how wonderful! While playing with my food and tormenting them until they die is nice and all. I prefer a little screaming and begging while I eat."
The Hylian growled in reply and took many quick breaths, it was unknown when his captor would pull him back under. Unsatisfied with the response, Sado used his other hand to stab his claws into the other's collarbone. With a much welcomed snap of bones and harsh shriek. The Zora let go and let the rock sink him to the floor. Sado tailing after him in lazy circles as if he was a curious fish, watching him fight a losing battle. With a quick dart, he slashed the Hylian's back, colouring more of the water with their blood.
I think that one more slash to the back and-
Then there was a wailing roar and a large rumble vibrating through the surrounding space. The dim glowing now lit up brightly as the water started to swirl about them with great force. Streaming bursts of bubbles rose up from the cracks in the floor panels. Ice shot up the walls, like an angry slash of blades, sealing off all open panels. Within seconds two thirds of the room was filled with air.
Despite the shock of what just happened, the Hylian man pulled himself up onto one of the raised platforms. Once the boulder was finally lifted out of the water, he stood to see if Sado had been swept away from the current. Panting and shaking, he knew it was wishful thinking to believe that he was safe.
Sure enough a second later, the silver Zora shot up from the water and landed on the furthermost platform. His arm was instantly painted red as blood rushed from a wound in his arm. His deep violet gaze searching the water, jumping to a closer surface the moment he saw a flicker of blue glow.
"What the hell is that?" He hissed, quickly checking the cut he had gotten from the glow. It was a deep, clean cut, sharper than any claw or blade he had been struck with before. When Sado looked to his prey, they visibly flinched and stepped back to the very edge. "No matter, I made a small mistake that this would be free of any pests. I can out swim that thing so I'm just going to have to haul your corpse elsewhere."
"I think not." An enraged voice floated in the air as mechanical limbs sprouted from the water, grasping the platform that the Hylian stood upon. Rising out of the water was the glowing body of a rank four guardian scout. With a twist of squealing gears and fast clicks, an ancient spear lit up, ready for battle. It was the same glow that Sado had fled from before.
"So it speaks. What are you then?" Sado demanded as he readied himself for a fight.
"I do believe it is more of who I am, rather than what." A teal glow seeped out from the guardian, flames danced and flickered around her form as Mipha manifested. Grasping one of the floating flames, it burst and formed into her familiar trident.
"Indeed, you're that woman everyone here won't stop talking about, it's beyond annoying... You surprised me there for a moment, but your nothing but a ghost. You're not the first so you can't spook me into simply leaving nor can you stop me from tearing that sharp-ear apart."
With a quick twist, she gracefully spun her weapon around and the machine followed every movement flawlessly. Showing that she held full control over the metal alien body below her. "While a spirit hinders me from contact, I still hold a deep bond to Vah Ruta. You will no longer torment this vulnerable Hylian." Her voice firm as she pierced the black stone shackled to the maimed man, shattering it into pieces with the ancient spear.
Another wailing roar rumbled through the Divine Beast as she floated down to the frightened Hylian. She smiled softly and raised her hand over him, healing power flowing down. He trembled, dropping to the ground, looking at his closing wounds in horror. "Fear not, now you are safe. We will be bringing you to the surface and alert the guards."
Loud, slow clapping echoed through the chamber. "Marvellous. You truly are befitting this role, I can't help but be impressed." Sado's purring words drew Mipha's attention once more, not the least bit amused by his mockery or toying.
"I can say the same for you, Sado." He blinked in surprise from that, she knew who he was? "I know all of your cruelty, the prayers of my people, of those that reach out to me, they do not go unheard. I know the lengths in which you will go and now that I have you at odds, you will not get away with your actions."
It started with a scoff, then giggling to chuckles and finally full-blown laughter. He keeled over, unable to stay on his feet any longer. "Oh, not you, fairy princess, I wasn't talking about you. But, I do believe that you are quite wrong. You had all these little snitches whispering in your ear for half a year and still, this is the best you could do? Did you ever stop to think that maybe I was sneaky, sly enough to study and bait a trap for you?"
Mipha huffed in annoyance. "Perhaps, but you cannot trap me so you have failed terribly."
Taking a deep breath, he relaxed and smiled. "You're right about that, I can't trap you. But... Kuu can."
She blinked in confusion, just how mad did someone have to be that they believed they could capture or do harm unto a celestial entity?
Going more than a hundred years without feeling pain or having a complete sense of touch. It was a horrifying thing, to suddenly feel hands upon her astral body. The kind of fear that washes over you in a cold chill and rising nausea. It couldn't have lasted more than a second, before she felt her very being unwind, breakdown, and crumble apart, her vision flooded into darkness. It felt like death, like she was dying all over again. In the last flickering spark, she let out a blood curdling scream.
A/N:
(Sidon's "purring" would sound close to a mountain lion( youtu. be/-FFmM_WrOO8?t=4 ), but low and strong like a gator bellow( youtu. be/XFpVYFTQRuQ?t=133 ). And he can be as soft as house cat or as loud as a lion)
