Chapter 20

Eventually, Tori picked a place to do the test. Beck finally took the test about 2 weeks after Tori had shown up at his and Jade's apartment.

"According to the results, he's yours, Beck." Tori announced, handing him the paper with the results.

"Um, ok. So where do we go from here?" Beck had mixed emotions about the news he'd just received. He was happy to have another kid, but upset that it was with Tori. He was also nervous about how Kai would change his and Jade's life together.

"You can have him on the weekends."

"I don't even know where he's supposed to stay. We don't have a spare bedroom at our apartment."

"Can't he just share with Jade's kid?"

"'Jade's kid' is my daughter, Tori. And no, he can't. I don't think Giselle would take too well to having to share a bedroom with a stranger, and Jade would flip her shit."

"What do you mean she's yours? Isn't she around the same age as Kai? Were you cheating on me?"

"If you must know, yes, I was, but not with Jade."

"What!?" She screamed.

"I was cheating on you, and had been for a month before we broke up. Giselle's not my daughter biologically, but I've been there for her and Jade since day one, and I've raised her as my own for almost two years."

"Were you ever going to tell me that you cheated?"

"No. I probably would've if we had continued dating, but because we didn't, I didn't really see a point."

"You're unbelievable, Beck."

"It's really not that big of a deal, Tori. We broke up almost two and a half years ago. I've clearly moved on, and I'd assumed you'd done the same."

"I have, but that doesn't mean I can't be mad that you cheated on me."

"Can we just drop this and continue talking about Kai?"

"Fine. When do you want to see him if you don't want him on the weekends?"

"It's not that I don't want him on the weekends, it's that I can't take him. Jade and I are looking for houses, but I don't think we can find one with four bedrooms that's within our price range."

"Four?"

"Jade's almost 4 months pregnant."

"Oh. Well, can't Giselle and the new baby just share a room, and then Kai gets his own room?"

"They can't share a room forever."

"Not forever, but just for a while, at least until you move into a bigger house."

"This is something I'd have to talk about with Jade. For right now, I'll come over whenever I can to see Kai. I'll take him to spend the night as often as possible, but that's as good as I can do until we move."

"Ok, that's fine, I guess."

Three months later, the arrangement was working fairly well. Beck and Jade had found a new house, so Kai stayed with them on the weekends in his own room. He and Giselle didn't get along too well, but what siblings did? Jade learned to accept their new situation, and would even go as far to say she liked the little boy. He was a sweet kid and very cute. Beck loved his son, and was at least civil with Tori. Andre, Cat, and Robbie were happy to find out there was a new member of the Oliver family and all got along with him well. Beck's show had gotten picked up for another season, and Beck had been signed on as a series regular. Jade got promoted to head assistant after Allison resigned to take care of her sick mother. Beck and Jade were preparing for the baby. They knew the three months they had left would go by all too quickly. Overall, their life had been going well, at least, until it wasn't.

"Are you excited to see where daddy works?" Beck asked his son, as they drove to set. Beck had gotten approval from the director to bring Kai to work and show him around.

"Yeah!" Kai said, enthusiastically.

"Good. We're gonna have so much fun. You'll get to meet new people, and see so many cool things." Beck was about to say something else, but before he knew it, a truck slammed into the passenger side of the small car.

The car luckily didn't flip, but it skidded across the road and into a lane with oncoming traffic. Another car slammed into the driver's side, causing Beck's car to come to a stop in the middle of the intersection. Other cars slammed on their brakes, and a few took risks and got out of their cars to see if they could help. The truck, however, drove off.

By the second impact, both Beck and Kai were knocked unconscious. Beck didn't come to until he heard someone yelling at him.

"Sir, can you hear me? If you can, can you respond?" The voice yelled.

Beck groaned before opening his eyes and looking around. He was still wearing his seatbelt, and the white inflated airbag was in front of him. There was a searing pain coming from his nose, and an even worse pain coming from his arm. His head hurt, and he felt like he was underwater. When he tried to move his neck around, pain shot up it.

"Sir, don't move. You could have a spinal injury. If you move, you could damage your spine even more."

"What happened?" Beck croaked out.

"What's the last thing you remember?"

"Talking to my son. Oh my god, is Kai ok?" Beck tried to move again, but stopped when the pain came back.

"Your son's still unconscious. My partner is checking on him. The fire department will be here soon to extract you both from the car."

"Is he gonna be ok?"

"We're not sure yet. We'll know more once we're able to get you both out. Can you tell me your name and age, as well as your son's name and age?"

"My name's Beck Oliver. I'm 22. My son's name is Kai Vega and he's 2."

"Ok. Do you or your son have any allergies?"

"I'm allergic to penicillin. And Kai doesn't have any allergies that we know of."

"Ok. The fire department's here now. They're going to cut you out. I'm going to put this brace on your neck, because you might have a spinal injury." The paramedic strapped a neck brace on Beck's neck and stepped away from the car to give the firefighters room to work.

Luckily for Beck and Kai, the firefighters worked quickly and were able to free them within a few minutes. They were both placed on stretchers and loaded into the ambulance.

Once they got to the hospital, they were assessed in the ER, and Kai was taken to surgery after Beck signed the consent. Beck was diagnosed with a broken arm, bruised nose, eye, and cheek, and whiplash. He was quickly casted, given an ice pack, and taken up in a wheelchair to the waiting room to wait for Kai. While he was waiting, he was able to use one of the nurse's phones to call Jade and Tori. Within 30 minutes, they both made it to the hospital.

"Oh my god, Beck. Are you ok?" Jade asked, rushing over to him. She took his face in her hands and inspected the damage.

"Babe, that hurts." Jade let go of his face and sat down next to him. "I'm ok. I just have some bad bruising and a broken arm. I'll be in a cast for about 8 weeks."

"What happened?"

"Kai and I were on our way to set, and a truck came out of nowhere. The truck hit the passenger side, and then another car hit the driver's side."

"Is Kai ok?"

"I don't know yet. Nobody's told me anything."

"Is he in surgery?"

"Yeah, but I don't know what for."

"Is Tori here yet?" Just as Jade finished saying that, Tori came barreling down the hallway.

"Where is he, Beck? Where's my baby?"

"He's in surgery. The doctors haven't told me anything."

"What the hell happened? He was supposed to be safe with you."

"It's not my fault, Tori. We were hit by two cars."

"Why weren't you paying attention?"

"I was. The truck came out of nowhere."

"If he doesn't make it out of this, I'm suing you." With that, Tori stalked off to presumably find out news about Kai.

"Now do you see how crazy this bitch is?" Jade asked, rhetorically.

"She's just a worried mom, Jade. I'm sure you'd be doing this too, if this were Giselle. I'm not blaming her."

"I am. She's literally saying this is your fault."

"I was driving, Jade. It was my responsibility to keep him safe."

"This is not your fault, Beck. It's not like you were speeding or drinking. It was an accident. The driver of the truck is at fault."

"I will never forgive myself if he doesn't wake up."

"We just have to hope he does. He's young and healthy, and I'm sure that means something."

"I hope so."

They remained silent for a while until a doctor came by and gave them an update.

"I've already spoken to your son's mother, so I figured I'd relay the message to you, as well. Your son sustained a crush injury from the door being pressed into his car seat. Due to this, he had some internal bleeding. He also sustained a broken leg and a few bruised ribs. He was given a blood transfusion and is still receiving blood."

"Is he going to be ok?"

"He's not out of the woods yet, but I'm confident he'll make a promising recovery. He will most likely sleep for a while longer, at least until the anesthesia wears off."

"Can I see him?"

"Yes. He was moved to a recovery room a few minutes ago."

The doctor led Beck and Jade to Kai's room. Tori was already there, of course, holding his hand.

"What are you two doing in here?" Tori asked bitterly.

"I'm seeing my son." Beck gave.

"I'm here for Beck." Jade responded.

"You're lucky he's going to be ok."

"I'm sorry, Tori. I'm sorry I took him in the car with me, and I'm sorry I didn't see the truck. I'm sorry that it wasn't me instead of him. I'm so sorry."

"You should be."

"Look, bitch, he just apologized. The least you could say is you accept his apology. He did nothing wrong." Jade was not taking any of Tori's shit.

"Kai isn't your kid, so stay out of it."

"I'm not going to sit back and listen to my husband be berated by you."

"He almost got my son killed. I can say whatever I want to him."

"It's not his fault."

"He was driving."

"Maybe if you had taken him like you were supposed to, Beck wouldn't have had to take him to set."

"I had a doctor's appointment. He can't come to that."

"As a mother, we have to make sacrifices. Going with you wouldn't have made a difference to your doctor's appointment."

"I thought it was ok to trust Beck with him. I guess I was wrong."

"Again, Tori, I'm sorry."

"Your apology means nothing to me."

Beck let out a sigh. He didn't know what else to say. He decided to look around the room to distract himself. Everything seemed pretty normal until Beck's eye stumbled upon the bag of blood that was being transfused into Kai.

It was A- blood. Beck was no scientist, but if he remembered biologically correctly, there was almost no way he could father a child with type A blood. He was O+. He knew Tori was O-. Beck was Kai's father, right? The DNA test said so.

"Tori, is Kai's blood type really A-?"

"If that's what it says on the bag of blood, then yes."

"I'm just asking because, unless they mislabeled this bag of blood, there's no way Kai can be my son. I'm pretty sure there's no way I can be his father. My blood is O+, yours is O-, and his is A+. Someone with type A blood has to be his father."

"Um, maybe they mislabeled the bag." Tori was hiding something, and Beck could tell.

"Fine, the doctor will settle this." Beck reached and pressed the call button, and the all waited for the doctor.

"You pressed the call button? Is there anything I can help you with?" The doctor asked as she walked in.

"I noticed that my son's blood type is A-. I was just wondering how that's possible if I'm O+ and Tori's O-." Beck spoke.

"Well, it's not. The father would need to be someone with type A blood."

"So what did you do to the DNA test, Tori? Did you pay off a doctor?"

"We can do a DNA test here, if you'd like." The doctor spoke, seeing the tension rise.

"No, there's no need. Can you excuse us, doctor?" Tori asked, finally finding her voice.

The doctor quickly left the room. Silence ensued for a while, until Tori spoke up.

"I didn't pay off a doctor to falsify the results. The DNA the doctor used was biologically related to you."

"Then how does Kai have A- blood?"

"Because he's not your son. I lied. He's the son of a guy I met at a bar a few weeks after we broke up."

"Why would you lie to me?"

"I'm broke, Beck. I haven't gotten a job in a year. I needed money and I was hoping you'd pay child support. I didn't expect you to actually want a relationship with him."

"What the hell is wrong with you? You let me believe he was my son for 3 months. 3 fucking months! That's 3 months of my life I will never get back, and that's 3 months Kai will never get back."

"I know what I did was wrong, but I had no other choice. My parents cut me off, and Trina lives in New York now. I don't have any friends to ask. You were my only other option."

"Whose DNA did you use?" Jade asked.

"Your son's. I found out through your mother that your cousins adopted a son about 3 years ago. They told her that their son was yours and Jade's. Your mother put me in contact with them."

"You used Weston's DNA?"

"Yes, I did. Your cousins agreed to let me use it if I could make you come back to me. It seems that none of your family likes Jade."

"What the hell? All of you are seriously messed up."

"I'm sorry, Beck."

"I don't want to hear it. Go to hell, Tori." And with that, Beck was out of the room.

Once he and Jade were outside of the room, Beck spoke.

"I'd like to be able to say I can't believe she did that, but it's not that unbelievable coming from her."

"I'm sorry, Beck. I know how much you loved Kai."

"I did, but it's whatever. We can go back to living our lives."

"Beck, you don't have to move on from him so quickly. It's ok to be sad."

"I'm fine, Jade. Can we just please go home?"

"Yeah, let's go."

They quickly made their way back down to the ER, where they returned the wheelchair, and then slowly but surely walked to Jade's car.

The car ride was spent in silence, and silence ensued once they arrived home. Once they got home, Jade went to the office to do some things for Fallon, and Beck locked himself in the bedroom. Neither one of them spoke to each other for hours. Jade left after about 4 hours to pick up Giselle from daycare, and by the time she got back, Beck was still locked in the bedroom. He didn't come out for dinner, and he didn't answer when Jade knocked around bedtime.

In a normal circumstance, Jade would be mad and accuse him of being childish, but this was an exception. He'd just been told that his kid was not his kid. He'd started building a relationship with Kai and had taken a liking to the fact he was Kai's dad. And then because of that bitch, it was all ruined.
