The Dark Mammal
Chapter Ten: The Last Battle
Savannah General Hospital, eight years ago
The baby was finally asleep, allowing for Judy to catch her breath. She had just received the news that this would be the last baby she would ever have, alas, it would also be the only one. Sure, Junior was some sort of weird hybrid, but she and her husband, Nick Sr., knew that other such mammals existed. But none of that mattered to her. As she looked down on her sleeping infant, she smiled and thought to herself, I'll love you forever, my little boy. I'll give my life for you if I have too.
Zootopia Cathedral, present day
As Judy coughed up some dust, she thought about that day, when her life changed forever, all for the better. She thought about her son, up in that gloomy bell tower, scared like no child ever should be. She thought about her husband, the first mammal to genuinely respect her, and would run through hell and back just for her, who may very well be dead now. As she weaseled her way through the wreckage, she thought about Danny, who lost his father all those years ago on what happened to be her second major case, only now to experience the horrors of night howlers. She thought about Allie, her old friend who was flying, and Tyler, that kid that she barely knew. She felt angry, that such a dark, twisted, hopeless soul could fool her into a false sense of security, only to come back, take all those mammals away from her, as well as thousands of innocent lives. There was going to be hell to pay.
As she made it out of the wreckage, she felt a set of paws grab her. "Oh thank Jesus," said Nick as he grabbed his bruised, dirty, but otherwise unhurt wife, "I thought you were dead." "Me to Slick," said Judy, "but no time for that, not with Junior still in danger." "Glad you're out," said Allie, with Tyler lying down next to her, looking rather seriously injured, "Tyler got hit the hardest when we got shot down, he took most of the blows." "What are we gonna do about him," asked Judy. "I'll stay with him," said Allie, "you and Nick, on the other paw, have a hostage to rescue. Give Joker a good beating for me when you see her." "Oh," said Judy, "it'll be so much more than that."
Creak!
Nick opened the massive, wooden doors to the cathedral, staring into the vast hall. "I remember this place," said Judy as Nick handed her a pistol, "we were married here." "And this is where they held Mack's funeral," added Nick, "this place holds a lot of memories to a lot of mammals." "There's just one memory I hope this place doesn't hold," said Judy as she and Nick turned on their flashlights and searched for the main stairwell. "What's that, carrots," asked Nick. "I sincerely hope that we all make it out of here alive," said Judy, "but I swore that since the day Junior was born, I'd risk it all for him if I had to. This might just be the day." "I believe that," said Nick as he found the old, wooden stairs that went up a seemingly endless spiral, "but you have to trust me on this. We will get out of here, all three of us. I promise."
They began to climb up the stairs, silently praying that the wood wouldn't give out underneath them. "Since this may be it," said Judy. "Don't talk like that carrots," interrupted Nick. "Anyhow," continued Judy, "I've been dying to know, but never had the courage to ask, how did you fall for a bunny?" "You're asking me this now," asked Nick, "we've been married for nine years and you still have doubts?" "It's not that Nick," assured Judy, "it's just that we're not exactly a normal couple." "No shit fluff," said Nick. "Okay," said Judy, "I just want to know what got you," she paused as she thought of the right words to use, "into, well, me?"
"Aside from the fact that you were one hot rabbit back in the day," said Nick. "Hey," said Judy, "I still got it." "I swore I'd never tell anyone about the Junior Ranger Scouts," said Nick, "yet I found myself telling you the day after we met. We were two lost souls back then, having nothing to turn to. Yet we just found each other." "Alright," said Judy, "what's the real answer?" "Okay," said Nick, "I heard a monologue like this in a movie once, but it does describe how I felt back then." Judy stopped for a second, thinking about what is was that Nick just said to her, and felt warm inside, until Nick snapped her back into reality and they continued their ascent.
They made it to the top, where there was a wooden trap door that lead all the way to the bell tower. They pushed it open, and saw a dark, empty room, covered in cobwebs with the massive, old iron bells right in front of them. Then they heard the Joker's laugh echoing throughout the room. "Well, well, well," she said, "It seems there's a fox in my hen house. Tell me something," she continued ominously, "you ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?"
Just then, a weasel wearing purple and green somersaulted into the chamber, and unsheathed two katanas. "Shit," said Nick, "she sicked the ninjas on us." The weasel spun around with the swords, with Judy narrowly missing decapitation by intentionally falling to her side. Then the weasel kicked Nick, sending him onto his back. Then all of a sudden, there was a puff of pink smoke, revealing the Joker, and Nick Jr. tied to a chair. "Good evening my fine friends," said Joker, "tonight we get to have a little fun." She laughed again, as Nick and Judy had to get back up before being cut up by the weasel. "Anyhow," she continued, "with the city on fire, your pwecious wittle bwoy in danger, and a psycho with a blade wanting to cut you up, it all sounds like a fun way to spend a weekend where I've been hiding out for the last ten years! Hahahahahaha!"
Pow! Pow!
Judy quickly drew her pistol while down, killing the weasel. "No fair, assholes," whined Joker, "that's cheating! Oh Bob!" Just then, a bobcat henchman made his appearance, thrashing at the two officers with his deadly claws. "I hate these types of psychos," complained Nick as he ducked to avoid being slashed. "Me too," said Judy as she aimed the gun. "Nuh-uh-uh," said Joker as she drew out a revolver and aimed it at Nick Jr., "use your guns and I use mine." "I think I know where you should aim that thing," said Nick. "If I die and you fail to save the boy," said Joker, this time in a serious tone as she grinned, "he dies too."
"Enough of this bullshit," said Nick as he grabbed his baton and wrapped it around the bobcat's leg, forcing him onto the floor. Then he climbed to the back of the cat's head, and bludgeoned the back of it as hard as he could, hearing a loud crack and seeing some red and pink goop splatter out. "This motherfucker ain't getting up," commented Nick. "Hah," said Joker as she aimed the revolver, "you really think you could beat me by murdering my henchmammals," she chuckle as she pulled back the hammer.

Instead of launching a bullet, the gun revealed a yellow flag with an orange explosion shape with the word "Bang!" written on it in white. "You motherfuckers should have seen the looks on your muzzle," taunted Joker, "you two looked like you were gonna shit your pants. Haha! Oh Francisco," she called out, "put them out of their misery!"
Just then, a large, black bull barged in, and aimed his horns at the pair. He charged, only for Nick to jump out of the way and for Judy to jump over him, baton in paw. She landed onto the bull's back and wrapped the baton around the bulls neck, choking him. The bull stumbled around, unable to get Judy off him, but feeling the life being sucked out of him. He tried running for what he thought was a wall, but since he couldn't see well enough, he hit something else.
Doooonnnggg!
The bull hit the bell, sending him shaking from the vibrations, as well as Judy falling onto the floor. The disoriented bull then couldn't help but fall onto the bell, only to slide up against it and fall down the hole, into the tower, to certain death. He screamed as he regained consciousness, only for it to stop just a second and a half later.
"Stop killing my guys you bastards," gripped Joker, "it's so rude of you two!" She drew out another revolver. "What're you going to do this time," taunted Nick, "shoot me?"
Blam!
Nick fell back as he took one to the chest, only to hear Judy rush up to him crying, which he was surprised was audible over the loud ringing in his ears as his life flashed before his eyes. "Nick," shouted a crying Judy, "don't die on me!" "Save my son first," groaned Nick, "and tell him, Judy," he coughed, "that daddy loves him!" As Nick slumped back, Judy wiped up the tears and turned to Joker, and addressed her by her real name, with anger and hatred leaking from her voice. "Dawn Bellwether," she said, "I'm gonna kill you for this. And I'll make sure to do it right this time."
"Now Judy," said Joker/Bellwether, "we can still talk this out! I was your friend, remember?" "You bitch," she screamed as she charged at her, holding her service pistol backwards, "you tortured my friends," she shouted as she pistol whipped her in the chest, "you destroyed Zootopia," she broke her jaw next, "you endangered my only child and killed the love of my life," she smacked her on the head, "you are not getting out of this one alive!" She grabbed her by the collar to the bells, where she deliberately entangled her enemy in the ropes and kicked her over the edge.
Dooonng! Doong! Dong!
The ringing of the bells drowned out the crack that signified Bellwether's neck breaking, this time for real. Judy watched as her nemesis struggling instantly turned into a lifeless lump. Then she turned up and screamed.
"Mom," shouted Nick Jr., "get me out of here!" "Oh God," she realized, "son, I'm coming!" She ran to Nick Jr., who was still tied to the chair, and cut him loose. "Mom," said Nick Jr., "is Dad going to be okay?" Judy looked at Nick, who shockingly, wasn't dead yet. "I don't know," said Judy, "but remember, little Nick," she paused, about to burst out crying, "that Dad loves you." She hugged her son, then turned her attention to her downed husband.
