Chapter Nine

"Thank you for coming in this morning."

"Well, you made it seem like we didn't really have an option."

"Any new developments on the case? Have you found her?" Callie pressed.

The detective shook his head, "No, however, we did receive an envelope."

"And?" this time Mark pressed, clearly anxious.

Detective Williams nodded as he grabbed the envelope and reached in to take out it's contents. He pulled out the paper with the cut up magazine letters pasted all over it; classic ransom note style. Then he continued to pull out a polaroid picture and place it face down on the table. He nodded to the group in front of him that consisted of the Captain, Bizzy, Mark and Callie.

"I have to warn you though," he paused. "The photo is pretty graphic."

"Call off the search or there will be no one to look for. This is simple. You owe us money, Calvin. You know what we did for you and we want what's rightfully ours plus triple the award money. It's the only way to ensure your kitten's safe return home. You have seven days…" Callie trailed off, setting the paper back down on the table. She reached for the polaroid and barely looked at it before dropping it to the floor. She exclaimed, "Oh god, Addison! What did you do?"

"Callie!" Mark screamed as he pulled her off of Addison's father.

She cried, "This is your fault! What did you do? What did you do?"

"Excuse me," the Captain cleared his throat and stepped out of the room.

Mark turned towards the police, "Fix this. Now."

"We're not calling off the search. We've already lifted prints off the paper and we're hoping that someone will show up in our database," he explained. "The saliva on the envelope was hers… The most we can do right now is offer police detail for the family. See if you guys are maybe being watched? Hopefully that will lead us somewhere."

"Whatever you do," Mark said as calmly as possible, "Do it fast."
