They set a wedding date of a week after Tabitha and Dante's 11th birthday, and their sixth anniversary. They didn't want to take away from the children's birthdays but they wanted to keep it close to their actual anniversary.
A month before the wedding Tabitha and Dante requested to see Chuuya and Kouyou. Dazai dropped them off at a local café, Ane-san was waiting outside, Chuuya nowhere to be seen, Tabitha explained they had wanted to talk to Kouyou before Chuuya got there so had asked her to come early.
A few hours later Dazai received a call from Ane-san, Chuuya had never shown, and as she had walked to the café, she couldn't bring them home. Kunikida came with Dazai to collect to them, wanting to make sure Tabitha and Dante were okay. As they pulled up, they saw Chuuya getting out of a taxi. Dazai wanted to go straight to his children, who were waiting in the café, he had long since decided to never show any ill will towards Chuuya, he would get his payback in his own way. Kunikida however had made no such decision, he had Chuuya pinned to the alley wall before he'd had chance to react.
"If you say a time, you stick to it or at least have the decency to call." Kunikida growled,
"Get off him Kunikida. Look at him!" Dazai pulled at Kunikida's arm, "He's never ever been late before, don't you think you should let him explain?"
Kunikida let go and took in Chuuya's appearance, his clothes were torn, and he had fading bruises and dried blood over his face and arms. Having seen Dazai, Tabitha and Dante had dragged Ane-san out of the café to go to their Dad.
"I'm sorry, there was an accident blocking my way, which would have made me late. So, as I was on my bike, I took a short cut, the road was slippy. The next thing I knew I was in the hospital. My bike is totalled and my phone got crushed in the accident. I tried to leave as quickly I could but no one believed I was fine, I slipped out as soon as I could, and took a taxi straight here."
"I'm sorry for my reaction" Kunikida bowed in apology.
"I can understand why you did it." Chuuya turned to Tabitha and Dante, "I'm sorry I'm late, if you are still happy to see me today, I'll come for a drink now or I can take you out to dinner as an apology."
Tabitha and Dante whispered amongst themselves, looking at Dazai,
"Up to you guys," he smiled
"Can we go for dinner please?" Tabitha asked.
"Sure, I'll pick you up for six." Chuuya smiled
"Ahem, I'll pick them up for six, you're not driving again today" Kouyou corrected
"We'll have them ready for six then." Dazai smiled.
When they returned from their meal Dante and Tabitha looked excited, but refused to tell Dazai and Kunikida why. A week later when Kunikida was out at his final suit fitting, Tabitha and Dante cornered Dazai, paperwork in their hands.
"Dada?" Tabitha asked
"Yes?"
"We…" Dante started, "we would like Papa-Kuni to adopt us."
"If you say yes that is, Chuuya's already agreed and signed what he needs to" Tabitha added.
"You've thought this through?"
"Yep, Kouyou helped us, we wanted it to be a surprise."
Dazai smiled, he and Kunikida had discussed the idea of Kunikida adopting Tabitha and Dante after their engagement, but had decided their marriage was enough of a change. Kunikida liked the idea of Tabitha and Dante being his, but he agreed with Dazai and both of them were happy to wait.
"If this is what both of you really want this, then yes, I will sign what's needed, but I won't be able to do this until after Kunikida and I are married, it's easier that way." He explained.
"So as long as it's after you've said 'I do' it'll work?" Tabitha asked
"Yes"
"Okay," she smiled, "Don't tell Papa-Kuni"
"We want it to be surprise, he'll like that won't he?" Dante asked
"Oh, he'll love it." Dazai smiled, pulling his children in for a cwtch.
It was the day of their wedding, they had invited the ADA staff and Chuuya and Kouyou. They were having a small wedding followed by a reception at their favourite restaurant, they wanted it to be a happy day of celebration so it suited them both.
The room was plainly decorated, an aisle in the centre, and Kunikida and the officiant waiting for Dazai at the end. They had chosen not to have a best man or maid of honour, instead unofficially bestowing that honour on everyone present, as they hadn't been able to pick just one person. The music started and Dazai started his walk, Tabitha and Dante ahead of him, their outfits in complimenting shades of purple. They gave Kunikida a quick cwtch, then did the same to Dazai as he reached the end of the aisle, before taking their seats. Kunikida was wearing a pale lilac suit and had swapped his usual black hair tie for a sparkling white one, Dazai was wearing a dark purple suit, a sparkling white ribbon through his hair, to match Kunikida.
Dazai took Kunikida's hands
"You look beautiful" Kunikida greeted him
"and you look gorgeous." Dazai smiled.
The officiant began, "We have gathered here today to witness the marriage of Osamu Dazai and Doppo Kunikida. They have chosen to write their own vows, Osamu if you go first?"
Dazai nodded, taking a deep breath,
"I never thought one day could change my life so much, but the day you met Tabitha and Dante, I knew my life would never be the same. You make every day special and I can't wait to see where our life together goes. I love you." Dazai smiled.
"Osamu, you continually surprise me and the day I met Tabitha and Dante I knew you were my one and only. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you. I love you." Kunikida smiled.
"Tabitha and Dante have the rings?" The officant asked.
Tabitha and Dante stood, Dante placed a ring on Kunikida's finger and Tabitha placed a ring on Dazai's, they were both smiling, as they sat back down.
"Thank you. Do you Osamu Dazai take Doppo Kunikida to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
"I do."
"And do you Doppo Kunikida, take Osamu Dazai to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
"I do."
"I know pronounce you married, you may now kiss."
Dazai and Kunikida kissed, as they pulled apart, they turned to cwtch Tabitha and Dante. Who were nowhere to be seen.
The doors, Dazai had entered through were pushed open, and a hush fell over the room. Chuuya stood in the middle of Tabitha and Dante, he walked them down the aisle in silence. Dazai took a step to the side, allowing Chuuya to stop in front of Kunikida, he let go of the children's hands, and pulled a piece of paper from his suit pocket, and began reading
"I know I am their father on paper only. But you, I have seen you grow as a parent, and I'm so proud of how all four of you have thrived as a family." Chuuya paused, taking a deep breath before the next part, "This is my wedding gift to you, I know you will be the perfect father to Tabitha and Dante." There were tears in Chuuya's eyes as he turned to Dazai, pulling him in for a cwtch, "I'm so happy for you mackerel."
"Thanks slug."
He let go, and gave Kunikida a handshake, "Congratulations," he paused, "Oh and these are happy tears, weddings make me emotional," he laughed, as Ane-san grabbed his elbow to make him sit down, as the next part was Tabitha and Dante's moment, they spoke together having clearly practiced their timings.
"Will you, Kuni-kun, do us the honour of becoming our father?"
Dazai produced the paperwork for them to give to Kunikida.
"Hmm I don't know, I've heard talk of you two becoming terrible teenagers like your parents," he laughed, but couldn't stop the happy tears. He looked at the paperwork, only his signature was needed for it.
"They're adoption papers Doppo" Dazai stage whispered, knowing his husband was too emotional to realise what was happening.
"You are my children with or without this, but yes." He signed the paper, "I do."
Dazai handed a small box to Tabitha and Dante, Chuuya having given it to him when they cwtched. They opened it,
"Crouch down please," Dante instructed. Kunikida did as he was told, they opened the box, inside was a locket, Papa inscribed on the front, and two pictures inside – one of Kunikida, Dante and Tabitha and one of all four of them.
"This is beautiful, thank you." Kunikida smiled, as Tabitha fastened the necklace around Kunikida's neck, letting him stand back up when she was done.
"It is with great pleasure, that I introduce the Dazai-Kunikida family." The officiant announced.
Dazai took Kunikida's hand, Tabitha took Dazai's hand, and Dante took Kunikida's hand.
They walked out under a shower of confetti, surrounded by love to continue their life together as a happy family.
