Chapter 10: Here's To Us
It's now the first day of Homecoming Week. We find May and Drew in theater class.
("I wonder if May will tell me about Devon and that he's clearly trying to get together with her.") Drew thought. ("Maybe I should try and make her tell me.")
"So, it's almost the day of the play." May said. She looked at Drew. "Are you excited?"
Drew looked at May. He flicked his bangs up. "I don't get excited."
"Oh really? You mean to tell me that you're never excited to take me out on a date?"
Drew blushed slightly and looked away from May. "Umm...I guess that's the only thing I'm ever excited for."
May giggled. "Good. Because if you aren't excited for our dates, then I'll be mad at you."
"We wouldn't want that." Drew said.
"Nope. You do not want to see me angry."
It stayed silent for a while. Drew is staring at the stage of the theater and May is looking at Drew.
("I guess I'll try to get May to talk about Devon now…") Drew thought. "So umm...how about we talk about the Pep Rally?"
"The Pep Rally? How come?" May asked.
"Just...because."
May's eyebrows furrowed. "That's not an answer."
"It's my answer." Drew said. "Just tell me again what part of the Pep Rally you're most excited for."
May sighed. "Sometimes I can never understand you. I guess I'll have to say that my most favorite part of the Pep Rally is the cheerleaders. Dawn will be sure to plan an amazing performance."
("At least she didn't say that the Beaus and Sweethearts are her favorite part.") Drew thought. ("But I still need to hear about what Devon has been trying to do.")
"So…" Drew started. "What kind of dress are you going to wear for the Pep Rally?"
"It's a secret." May said, smiling.
"Oh really…" Drew said. ("Guess I'll need to be more direct.")
"So, tell me about Devon." Drew said.
May's eyes widened. "D-Devon? Why do you want to talk about Devon?"
("More direct...more direct…") Drew thought. "He hasn't been trying anything on you, right?"
"W-what? Try anything? No. No, of course not. I told he's...not like that." May lied, looking to the stage. The memory of Devon trying to hand her a rose just played back in her head. And she knows that Drew might get the wrong idea if she told him.
Drew looked at May. ("She's lying to me…") He thought. ("But why? Does she actually like Devon?")
"Nothing, huh." Drew said.
"Umm...yep. Nothing. Nothing at all." May said.
Drew looked back at the stage. "Well...are you two friends?"
"I...umm…" May started. "Yeah. I guess we're friends at least, but of course not that good of friends yet." May laughed nervously.
"Of course not." Drew said. "Well, I was just wondering."
It stayed quiet for a while after that.
Drew feels a little hurt inside. ("I know she's lying because she's stuttering and I saw Devon try to give her a rose the other day.") Drew thought. ("All she has to say is that she didn't accept it and that she has no feelings for him at all. She doesn't need to lie to me. We should be able to tell each other the truth no matter what.")
("Lying to Drew doesn't feel right.") May thought. ("But I know that if I were to tell him that Devon actually asked me out and tried to give me a rose, he'd get the wrong idea and think that I like Devon in that way. And I don't want to make Drew mad at me and...want to break up with me. I can't tell him what Devon has been trying to do.")
It's the next day with the gang during lunch.
"So, today's an open mic." Dawn said. "Who's going to sing?"
"I'll pass." Ash said.
"So will I, but I'll gladly suggest January." Drew said.
"My name is May!" May yelled at Drew.
"You should volunteer to sing, May." Misty said.
May sighed. "Fine. I'll do it." She smiled at Drew. "As long as it makes you happy."
Drew blushed a little and looked away from May. "I always love hearing you sing."
May smirked and tried to look at Drew's face that was turned away from her. "Are you...blushing?"
"What? No." Drew said, composing himself. He faced forward and flicked his bangs up. "I don't blush."
"Sure…" Gary said sarcastically. Drew glared at Gary.
"Hey everyone!" A person in the big speakers called. Everyone in the cafeteria looked towards the stage and saw someone talking into the microphone. "Are there any singers who want to sing us a song?"
"That's your cue, May." Kiara said.
"Right." May said. She stood up and raised her hand. "I'd like to sing!"
Everyone looked at May. "Well then, Princess, come on up here!" The hostess said. "Let's give her a hand, everyone!" Everyone started clapping for May.
May faced the left side of Drew. Drew looked up at her. "Forget something?"
"Only this." May said. She leaned down and placed a kiss on Drew's cheek. Drew blushed at his girlfriend's action.
Some of the girls gasped and some scowled at the sight of May kissing Drew's cheek. May backed away from Drew, smiled, and turned to start walking towards the stage.
"Wow...I did not expect her to be the one to kiss me in front of everyone." Drew said.
"Well, you two have been getting close, right?" Kiara questioned.
"Right…" Drew agreed. ("Except for the fact that she's lying to me about Devon.")
May walked onto the stage. "Take it away." The hostess said, handing May the microphone.
"Thanks." May said. The hostess walked off of the stage. May walked over to the DJ and told him what song to play. The DJ nodded and May walked back to center stage. She moved the microphone stand to the side of the stage. Walking back to center stage, she pointed to the DJ, signaling him to start the music. The music starts sounding through the speakers, all eyes are on May.
(This song is "Here's 2 Us" from Victorious. There's changed lyrics.)
"Here's to the Mondays," May sang into the microphone. "Watching all the cars on the freeway. I ain't got a thing to do. Can I sit here next to you? And oh oh oh. Yeah I wish these boys would quit it. Can't they see that I'm not interested?" Drew smiled at May's words. May and Drew locked eyes with each other. "Could they leave it alone? I'll follow my heart to home. All these fans of a Princess, but I rock it like they don't know, you know?"
"Ooooh. Here's to us oh oh." May sang. "Here's to us. Ooooh." The audience started clapping along to the beat of the song. May was looking over the entire audience and singing to them. "Here's to us oh oh. Here's to never winning first place. Here's to every romantic date." Drew smiled and just stared into May's eyes, seeing how much fun she has when she's singing. "Here's to every single embrace. Here's to us. Ooooh. Here's to us."
"Here's to the mistakes." May sang, locking eyes with Drew. "I hope they'll always drop us in the right place. And we'll go another round 'til the sky is falling down. For some strange reason I can't seem to get you out of my mind. What to do?" Drew continued smiling at May's words.
May blushed a little at Drew's smile. She looked away from him and started singing towards the whole audience, but the song is meant for Drew. "Ooooh. Here's to us oh oh. Here's to us. Ooooh." May's gaze turned to one particular person in the audience. Devon. "Here's to us oh oh." Devon was just smiling at May, but May awkwardly looked away from him. "Here's to never winning first place. Here's to every romantic date. Here's to every single embrace. Here's to us. Ooooh. Here's to us."
"Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na." May sang. "Na na na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na. I'm a dreamer, a believer. But I swear you'd never know. Cause all the fans care 'bout, is going out, with the one that plays that role. The role of a Princess, they all obsess, over looks, it's getting old. I don't mind your love and that's just how it goes." It's like the audience isn't even paying attention to the words May is singing. Drew is paying very close attention though.
("She's amazing.") Drew thought. ("And this song really tells me that she doesn't have feelings for Devon at all.")
May and Drew locked eyes with each other again. "Ooooh. Here's to us oh oh. Here's to us. Ooooh. Here's to us oh oh. Here's to never winning first place. Here's to every romantic date. Here's to seeing you every day. Here's to every single embrace. Here's to raining on your own parade. Here's to showing up anyway. Here's to us. Here's to us. Here's to. Here's to the Mondays." May sang, finishing the song.
The cafeteria erupted into applause. Everyone minus the gang wasn't even really paying attention to what the words were, because they were just captivated by May's amazing singing voice. May put the microphone back in its stand and she walked down the stairs of the stage and to the gang while the applause was still going on.
May sat down with the gang next to Drew.
"You were so good!" Dawn said happily.
"Definitely your best performance yet." Gary said.
"Thanks, everyone…" May said shyly.
Drew and May looked at each other. "So, what do you think of that song?" May asked.
Drew didn't say anything. He just has on his serious face. It stayed quiet for a while.
"Drew?" May questioned.
Drew smiled and pulled out a rose. Without saying anything, he placed the rose in May's hair. May blushed.
"So umm...you liked it then?" May asked.
"Hmm...nope. I did not like it." Drew said, looking away from May.
May's smile faded. Drew didn't like the song that was meant for him?
Drew smiled. From the side of Drew, May could see his smile and she looked at him in confusion. Drew glanced at May. "I loved it." Drew said. May beamed. "After all...why would I not love a song that's sung to me by my girlfriend?"
May blushed. She took his hand. "Here's to us, right?"
Drew turned his head completely to look at May. "Here's to us." He said, tightening his grip on her hand.
And the songs continued with Drew still thinking about something.
("Is May ever going to tell me what Devon tried to do?")
