Chapter 19: Blake

He had been in the World Domain for just short of a month, and every second had sucked. All he had done was walk around aimlessly, camp-out in isolated areas, and pull his hair out. He had had no luck finding his world spirit in this place and it had been exceedingly frustrating. He didn't even know where to begin.

The World Domain was basically a carbon copy of the one in the Realm of Life placed in a deeper level of his inner world. There was only one disturbing detail that differed from the real one.

He was the only human being in this world.

Every city, every town, and every village was simply empty. As if the whole population of earth had disappeared over night. It was deeply unsettling.

That was part of the reason why he camped out in isolated places. The emptiness of the World Domain creeped him out to the point that he'd rather stay in a place that would be unpopulated in the real world, just to get some normalcy.

The silence of the cities, the empty cars abandoned on the roads, and the only living creatures being animals; it all was very freaky. Even the wind felt quiet as it blew.

But he knew that he was not alone.

He always felt like something was watching him and sometimes caught movement in the corner of his vision. He was being followed. Yet, he didn't think it was human. Whenever he turned around, the thing had vanished completely from sight, as if it had never been there. He would wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of snapping twigs or footfalls, and part of him felt that he was going crazy. Yet, the other part of him knew it was something else.

He had called out to it multiple times, but no verbal reply ever came. This only went to support that he was probably going crazy and was more than likely talking to an animal.

Yet, the last time he had felt the presence, something changed in the world. While walking through a random town, he had walked past a blank wall, but when he turned around after feeling the strange presence he'd discover a message written on the previously blank wall. It read:

"Go to the end, where the bears lurk."

What did that mean?

So Blake had visited forest after forest, but no world spirit had been found.

He now found himself hiking along the Appalachian mountain range in an attempt to find some sort of sign of a bear. Could it be at the end of the mountain range? That would explain the end.

The breeze was brisk outside and snow covered some of the mountain-tops. The diviner wrapped his robes around him more tightly. They really weren't suited for cold weather. The cold cut through his clothing like a well honed blade and soon left him shivering.

Blake let his thoughts travel to his Master and the conversation he had had with the woman the night after he had fought the Observer.

1 month prior

Integra had convinced him to stay another week before going to the World Domain. She was worried that he wasn't mentally or emotionally prepared for the task, and he had to admit that she was right. He wanted to hurry, but the task in the World Domain, or his World Domain as it turned out, would be his most difficult yet. He needed to be prepared in every way possible.

So that meant training and lessons.

"I was going to save this for when you received your final Mastered Arcana, but I figured it would be good to tell you since you nearly tapped into it in your fight against the Observer," Integra began. "Once you gain dominion over your Mastered Arcana, you'll gain new capabilities."

"Like what?" Blake asked, his curiosity piked. And what had she meant about "tapped into"? Had he really done anything that special?

"For one, you'll gain the ability to draw out your maximum potential and manifest it into a new form," Integra answered. "This form will be what is called your "Diviner Form"."

"Diviner Form?" Blake echoed. "How did I tap into that earlier?"

"When you fought with the Observer, you absorbed an extreme amount of power from it," the diviness responded. "By doing so, it allowed you to scratch the surface of your Diviner Form."

Blake nodded his understanding. He had felt an incredible surge of power after absorbing the Observer's blast.

"Can I see your Diviner form?" Blake asked. He was curious about how it looked. He remembered how it felt. It had felt exhilarating yet draining at the same time. It was powerful to a degree he hadn't felt before.

Integra nodded. "It would be a good learning opportunity for you to see it first hand."

Integra closed her eyes and white energy began to billow around her and transform into burning white electricity. Her body began to arc with power and take on a faint glow and when she opened her eyes they were full of white light.

The intensity of power that surrounded her was enough to make Blake take a step backwards. That had been the form he had taken? That was insane.

The power faded around Integra as she returned to her normal form and she smiled at him.

"That's what awaits you if you go against my wishes again," she chuckled in a way that seemed to be jokingly. Blake could never quite tell though.

"Point taken," Blake laughed nervously.

"Now the next capability you'll acquire, after gaining all of your Mastered Arcana, is the ability to receive your Mastery Form from a Master of Arcana," Integra went on with her lecture. "This form will allow you to take on the title of "Master of Arcana" and put you on par with the other masters. It is a very powerful form that should only be used in emergency situations."

"There's another level?!" Blake exclaimed. How broken were his powers?!

"Yes," Integra answered. "Each form is different for every Master of Arcana. But it's a very dangerous trump card and is meant to be handled with care."

Blake put a finger to his chin, then smiled sheepishly. "But you'll show me yours, right?"

"What did I just say?" Integra sighed. "It's only to be used in emergencies. But I shall tell you of it. My Mastery Form is called the Divine Priestess. It's a form that specializes in long-ranged magical attacks with light as it's core element."

"That sounds badass, Master!" Blake exclaimed with a smile. "I wonder what my form will be!"

The corners of Integra's lips twitched upward for an instant, yet she managed to keep her face calm. "That will be revealed to you once you lay claim to your final Mastered Arcana and become a Master of Arcana yourself. Now there is a third form that I must warn you about."

"And what form would that be?" Blake asked.

"The Divine Overdrive form," Integra answered.

———-

The crack of a twig from behind him, interrupted his run down memory lane. But like always, when the diviner spun around, there was nothing there.

Maybe his nerves were just getting to him. It was probably just an animal. It had to be just an animal. Yet, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was wrong.

As he turned to continue down the path, his foot connected with some ice and the world turned sideways as he found himself falling.

Falling would have been fine if he had been on just any old path, but the path he had been on was very narrow.

And about several hundred feet from the ground below.

Blake soon found himself tumbling over the edge of the mountain.

The diviner swore as he threw up some pentacles around him to cushion his fall, but he rotated too quickly as he fell to block every hard landing. The mountain side seemed to smack him from every direction as he flipped and rolled, and right as he reached the bottom his pentacles broke and his head smacked hard against the ground.

The impact sent stars exploding across his vision and when he tried to stand, his vision failed him completely, sending him into darkness.

——-

Images barraged his mind.

Images of a familiar glowing city. Images of street vendors. Images of small shops. Images of a flower cart. And images of a familiar apartment building. And in every image, there were wooden statues of bears littered everywhere.

He knew this place.

It was-

——

Blake's eyes snapped open and he found himself laying on his back with a throbbing headache. How had he not died?

The diviner looked up at the ledge he had fallen down and shuddered. By all rights he should have died. That fall could have killed anyone.

The images from his dream came back to him and his eyes opened in realization. He now knew exactly where to go.

The place where it had all ended. The city of bears.

Berlin.
