"The holidays aren't just about giving gifts, Sirius," Lily said patiently. "It's about spending time with people you love."

"You wouldn't be saying that if you weren't in the same situation as me," Sirius said irritatedly, "so stop spewing that Hallmark shite and help me out here! Cash in that favor you owe me for helping you pick out James's gift. Would Kingsley like a scarf? Or a pair of red gloves? Or —"

"No, no," Lily said, shaking her head. "What is your fixation with clothes? Get him something else."

"Like what?" he challenged, gesturing to the Christmas section of the store. "There's nothing Kingsley here. Unless you're going to suggest that I get him a king's crown or something equally as horrid."

"...Kingsley likes playing cards," Lily offered after a moment, indicating the small pile of card boxes that lay at the end of the aisle. "He's ace at those nerdy card games that you two like to play together, and that's the one set of cards he doesn't have."

"How is that you know my boyfriend better than me?" Sirius whined.

"Consider it even for knowing more than me about my boyfriend."

Sirius bit his lip as Kingsley gazed at his gift. Would he like it? Lily had said he would, but if she was wrong…

"This is…" Kingsley said slowly, and Sirius's heart beat faster. "This is wonderful, Sirius! How did you know I would want this? I never told you!"

"I...have my ways," Sirius said, internally relieved. Kingsley pulled him into a hug, kissing his forehead, and Sirius mentally reminded himself to thank Lily later.

"Now we have the full set!" Kingsley was practically bubbling with glee. His face looked like a child's. "Now I can properly kick your arse!"

"Let's not count our dragons before they hatch," Sirius said quickly. Glancing at the new pocket watch Kingsley had given him, he said, "Speaking of which, I think it's time for that arse-kicking you mentioned. Except I'm doing it to you. And if you're lucky, I might do some other things with your arse afterward." He smirked, and Kingsley grinned.

"You're on."
