Chapter 9: The Intruder

Mason unrolled his Sleeping bag on the floor of the Owl House. He heard Eda humming along in the kitchen chopping vegetables for dinner. "Thanks for letting me stay the night. I really needed to get out of that castle. My master did not enjoy his chambers being laced with a stink bomb trap."

"No problem, I mean, I was the one who got you in hot water with your teacher in the first place," Eda said, using her knife to push the carrot slices in the pot. She turned the dial and the soup began to boil.

Mason watched Luz film King fighting with a sock on his nose.

"And here we see the world's most dangerous creature: the ferocious King of demons. He is locked in a vicious battle with his natural enemy: the ducky sock," she said in a Steve Irwin-esque voice.

King tore and scratched at the garment shredding it to scraps of cloth on the floor. "Where are you now ducky sock!?" The little dog demon yelled triumphantly.

Luz stifled a giggle as Mason walked toward her.

The girl noticed her friend's approach and gave him a hug.

"Wow, what is that for?" Mason said, surprised by Luz's show of affection.

"For being my first human friend... and helping me escape from Hexside, of course."

Mason Rubbed the back of his neck. "I take it you weren't very popular on earth?"

Luz looked down and shook her head "I was "too weird" they said. That's why my mom was sending me to summer camp. To make me "normal.""

Mason could sense an edge to her voice. He could even see that she was suffering from a small amount of self-loathing… a feeling he was all to familiar with.

"I guess you think the same… right?" She asked, on the verge of tears.

Mason placed his hand on her shoulder and said "No. I don't." Mason wrapped his friend in a hug. When he released his embrace, he cupped her chin with his hand and pulled her face up to meet his eyes. "Listen, can you keep a secret?" Mason hoped she would say no… he didn't want to tell her one of his secrets, but, if he had too he would.

Luz stared deeply into Mason's eyes and nodded her head.

Mason sighed and released Luz. He walked to the window and looked out at the bleak forestland that surrounded the Owl House. It's going to rain. A fitting background to something I wish I could forget. "Luz. My mom hates me."

Luz blinked her eyes multiple times, "What? You're kidding right? Mom's aren't supposed to hate their children… it's not right."

Mason breathed in and waited for his nerves to calm, his hand shaking violently "It wasn't right! For the longest time I thought that she was right. I realized that she never cared for me. She tolerated me. That kindness was retracted the day that… " Mason slammed his fist into the wall and the entire house shook.

"Mason, I'm sorry. My mom loves me. I know that all she wants is for me to make friends and be happy. I guess I forgot how lucky I was. Compared to other kids."

"Luz the point of my story was that you should never be sad about being who you are. Don't let anyone tell you that you are wrong and if they do, don't let it get to you. Take it from me. People are cruel and lingering on their jeers will eat you alive if you let it."

"Is that what's happening to you?"

"Yes. Luz, you are the kindest, funniest, and sweetest girl I have ever met in my life. I think you are wonderful especially since your "weird." Luz you're the best friend that I have ever had."

Luz laughs softly and jabs Mason in the arm "Look at us too weird to live and too stubborn to change."

Mason bellowed in joy "You got that right," he said through tear-filled chuckles. Supporting himself on Luz's shoulder as the rain began to pour.

"Can you two stop with the tender moment I'm trying to get your attention," King said, putting himself between the two humans.

Luz kneeled down and picked up King cradling him in her arms kissing his cheeks. "Ah, do you feel left out little guy," she said rubbing her head against his.

King struggled his way out her grasp and landed on his feet like a cat. "Now, Luz, Mason. You two have been trying so hard to learn about being witches you neglected your study on the topic of my kind."

"Oh and you're going to enlighten us on the dangers of the freeloading demon dog," Mason said, rolling his eyes.

"Freeloading!? You're one to talk," King retorted.

"Fair enough."

"Now what you need to know about demon kind is we are cruel tricksters of the twilight, our only weaknesses are purified holy water and hurtful comments… sometimes."

"Ah, you guys are sensitive," Luz cooed.

Mason rolled his eye he knew from his lessons with Lilith that purified water may be the best weapon against a demon it's not the only thing you can use against them.

"we are creatures of shadow and malice–"

"– And cute little paws." Luz added, in a baby-like voice.

King sighed "And cute little paws." King placed his hand on a ruler and tapped on a chalk board where he had many different pictures of demons. "Now Luz, Mason. Let's introduce you to the most dangerous demon known on the Boiling Isles..." King slaps his ruler on the picture of a huge demon with a Spiked turtle shell and purple skin with claw-filled paws. "… the Snaggleback!"

"Oooh!" Luz exclaimed, wonder filling her eyes.

"You may have seen the Snaggleback and if you did… count yourself lucky that it didn't snatch you up in it's jaws." King clapped his hands together to simulate being chewed up in a beasts maw. "The Snaggleback is a ferocious terror of the twilight and a…"

"Bad Boy!" Luz exclaimed snapping pictures of the Snaggleback with her phone and adding funny stickers to it.

"Guys take this seriously you never know when a demon will come after you!" King shouted his little cheeks getting red.

"C'mon King I think we can handle a demon."

The silence of the night was broken when a horrid screech pierced the house shaking it to it's core.

Luz began trembling "Wh-what wa-was that?"

"It's the Snaggleback! It came when we called its name! Save us Mason!" King latched himself unto Mason's legs and Luz made her way behind Mason.

"Will you three cut it out!? It's just Hooty freaking out about something." Eda rapped her staff on the roof. "What is it Hooty?"

"It's Raining!" The owl shouted crying out in pain.

Luz squealed in joy "I love the rain!" she rushed out of the door. "I always liked to let the first few drops hit me square in the face." before anyone could stop her Luz was out the door.

"Luz No!" Mason ran as fast as his legs could carry him. It had already started a downpour and he saw Luz doing a dance to avoid the rain drops.

"Run to me! Run. to. Me!" Mason called as he conjured a protective barrier around Luz with a spell.

Luz did as her friend commanded and hastily entered the house.

A few moments later while Eda formed a huge barrier over the Owl House. Mason looked over Luz's wounds.

"Ow, it still stings," She said rubbing a bad burn spot that was covered by thick gauze.

"Don't pick at it! You're gonna get an infection." Mason swatted Luz's hand away.

"Okay can you do anything to make it heal faster?"

"I mean healing magic is a bit much to waste on a minor burn that will completely heal given time."

Luz slitted her eyes with mischief "Are you sure? Cause I hear that the doctor's order calls for a kiss to the Boo-boo Area and that's supposed to make it better."

Mason's eyes shot open "You can't be serious? That's ridiculous! I'm not doing it!"

"Okay, it's fine. You just don't care about me. I mean so what if I die from a lack of affection. I mean, I guess I'll just lie on the cold ground, unloved and alone," She sighed and turned her head from him.

"You have truly mastered the fine arts of the guilt trip." Mason kissed her bandaged bruise.

Luz giggled happily. "Thanks Mason. You're the best big brother ever." Luz immediately slapped her hand over her mouth. "I'm sorry that came out wrong."

"Big brother? I like it. You can call me that. I mean if you want."

Luz's cheek glowed red and as she wrapped her arms around Mason in a hug he returned her embrace.

"So you don't have any brothers or sisters back home?"

"I might."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Mason asked, confused.

"It means I don't know. I never knew my dad. But, I hope to find him one day."

"The same is true about my uncle."

"I'm guessing your dad and him were close?"

"Very close. I heard all the stories about my uncle Andrew's bravery. I hope to pick up where my father left off and find him."

"I hope to someday find my dad."

"Hey, when we get back to the Human world. Let's work together to find our missing family members, how about it?"

"You mean it!?"

"Yeah of course. I mean when both of us become powerful witches we can definitely find them?"

Luz once again hugged Mason.

"Okay young lady. You've reached your hug limit for the day." Mason returned her embrace.

"I'm so glad I found someone like you. I thought I would never meet a friend who I can trust. It's hard to find anyone you can connect to, when you're as weird as I am."

Mason grew cold. Trust? Big mistake. I sincerely hope I can get you out of here okay. I'll get you back to your home. But, I promise when we return to earth I will never leave you alone. Even if it means that I never find uncle Andrew.

"Alright kids, I'm off to bed," Eda said, mumbling under her breath.

"Wait, Eda!?" Luz dashed toward the Owl Lady. Placing herself between the witch and the stair.

"What Luz? I'm pretty tired," she said rubbing her eyes.

"Will you teach me a spell, Please?" Luz was already breaking out the big sad eyes.

"That may work on Mason. But, you'll have to try harder."

"Hey Owl Lady!? How about a trade?" Mason called reaching into his satchel.

"Oh yeah, what's a blue blood like you got to trade?" Eda eyed the boy skeptically.

Mason pulled out a satchel and undid the purse strings revealing six large clear gems.

"D-d-diamonds!" Eda scrambled toward the bag. She charged the young boy and shot her hands at the bag.

Mason pulled them away causing the Owl Lady to fall flat on her face. "uh uh uh, not until you teach Luz a spell. Then you can have the diamonds." thank you Kikimora. If it wasn't for you and the Emperor authorizing these for my mission I would never get to have this much fun.

"I respect your resourcefulness but I despise you for it," Eda said picking herself back up. Eda dusted off and went to the center of the house. "Alright Luz pay attention. The spell circle is a common practice for all witches. Some of the best like yours truly don't need them as much as the less refined."

Luz listened Intently at her teachers words, excitement bubbling inside her.

Mason on the other hand. Just rolled his eyes. He had seen this all before. She's just as arrogant as her sister.

Eda traced a spell circle out of it came a ball of light.

"How can I do that?" Luz asked.

Eda turned her head "Luz." she began "where do you think magic comes from?"

"The heart," she said, nervously.

"Actually, yes." Eda was surprised by her pupils answer.

"Really!?"

"Yes, inside the heart of all witches is a bile sac. From that magic flows and allows us to use our spell circles."

"But, how can I use magic if I don't have one of those sacs."
"Well, don't give up hope. Mason's just as human as you are and he can do magic. He may even be able to keep up with me, given a few years of hard training."

God forbid I'm here for another year. He thought disgusted at the witches nonchalant behavior. In another year I'll be back in the human world using my magic to help Luz and make my life better. And you Owl Lady. Will be turned to stone. Serves you right.

"Okay Luz. You try."

Luz made traced a circle in the air and… nothing happened.

"Aaah." she slumped her shoulders.

"Hey, try thinking of something that makes you happy," Mason added.

"Is that how you do it?"

how I used to do it. What got me through Lilith's hellish training regiment was thoughts of home. Now my magic is just rote from months of practice. "yes."

"Okay!" Luz traced the circle again to no effect. "I just can't do it."

"Hey kid, don't be so hard on yourself. You'll get there. Probably." Eda made her way back up to the stairs but was stopped by Luz holding her hand.

"Do the circle again, please."

"What? Why?"

"So I can record it with my phone."

"I don't know Luz. I'm pretty tired."

Mason cleared his throat and jingled his gem purse "One more spell won't kill you.".

"Fine," She groaned. Once again doing the spell circle. As Eda was about to summon the light ball she passed out and fell backwards.

"Whelp, one more spell killed Eda," King said, sipping on a cup of red juice.

Luz and Mason screamed.

"Oh my god, I pushed her to far!" Luz exclaimed, rushing to her "dead" teacher

"Oh my god, I've screwed myself!" Mason exclaimed, stomping his foot in anger.

"Calm down," King said, tapping Eda with his foot, "she's just asleep. Bap" he smacked his palm to her face.

A collective sigh escaped the human's mouths.

Luz made the first move going to her teacher's head "Mason can you give me a hand with her legs."

"Sure thing Luz." Mason grabbed the witches legs and helped Luz carry her up the stairs. When they entered the Owl Ladies room they laid her down on the nest that was her bed. Luz grabbed a blanket and Mason looked around the creepy room with pictures of her past and magical foci scattered across the floor.

Just then an owl hit Mason square in the face. "Ah, we're under attack! Luz save yourself."

"Owlbert! No!" Luz commanded and just then the small owl flew on her shoulder. She glared at the creature "Shame on you. Say your sorry."

The owl rubbed its head on Luz's neck.

"Not to me, to Mason."

The owl flared daggers at Mason.

"Now, Owlbert!"

The owl flew and gave a passive hug to Mason who returned it in kind.

"There, there, all is forgiven."

Luz once again wore a happy smile and clapped "Good, I'm glad you all are getting along. Now let's get out of here. Eda is sleeping."

The trio made their way down the stairs and resumed their nightly preparations for bed time.

When the bed rolls were finished including Luz's since she wanted to enjoy the full "witch sleepover" experience.

"Mason?" Luz asked, when the lights were turned off.

"Yeah Luz?"

"How did you first learn magic?"

"Luz, I don't know how I can do it. But, I promise you that I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure you can live your dream."

"I have something that can help!" King shouted as the thunder began to roll.

"King, don't shout. Eda's sleeping," Luz called.

"But Luz I know how you can do magic."

"Really? How?"

"Yeah how?" Mason asked, suspicious.

King pulled out a pouch in his belt a small round vial with yellow liquid, "with this!"

"What is it?" Luz asked.

"Yeah how is that supposed to help Luz?"

"Eda drinks this potion everyday when she feels groggy. I think it gives her a magical boost."

"Really! Give it to me!" Luz reached for it but was stopped by Mason.

"Hold on Luz." Mason said before turning his gaze to King. "How do we know it's not poisonous to humans?"

"We don't!" King exclaimed, excitement clearly showing. "But isn't it worth a try to give Luz a chance to use magic."

Before Mason could reply Luz snatched the vial from King. "Good enough for me!" Luz chugged down the potion and traced a circle. Nothing happened as the young girl slumped. "Ah, it still didn't work."

Mason placed his hand on the girl's shoulder "Look I have a couple books on beginner exercises for spell-casting which helped me. How about i loan them to you."

"Okay, thank you," Luz said wiping away the exhaustion from her eyes.

"Alright now let's go to sleep."

The trio did just that. Mason lay his head down and dreamed of many things… the chief among them the day of his sisters funeral.

––––––––––––––––

Mason had cried all the tears he could for His dead sister. It was his fault that she was dead and his mother knew it.

Catherine Fairweathers was not a kind woman, at least she wasn' t to Mason. Andria though always got the best of everything from their mother.

Mason watched as his mother packed her bags grumbling. She always hated Mason. Calling him useless and a layabout.

Andria was the perfect child; head of the track team, straight A student, and the nicest person on earth. The later of which made Mason feel even more guilty.

Why did I have to throw away the keys to her car he thought. I should have told the truth instead of letting her drive in that old beat up car. The accident was my fault. I killed my sister.

Mason relived this moment ever time he went to sleep. The next one though haunts him even when he wakes.

The boy of four years watches his mother leave their house and his life for good. He will always remember her parting words.

"Mason." she started her tone dull and neutral. "I have always hated you. You are the worse thing that has ever happened to this family. It should have been you in that car wreck. Goodbye and may I never see you again."

Mason had cried himself to sleep that night and his father had made him pancakes and bacon the next morning. It was this day that Mason's close relationship with his dad began. Because, his dad reassured him in those moments with these words.

"God, works in mysterious ways. My son, he took your sister but It isn't your fault. Your mother is just mad and people say the worse things when they are grieving. Mason, I love you and I will always be with you even when I am gone."

Just then an image of the decaying corspe of Mason's father looked at the boy with sadness in his eyes."Why did you Abandon me son? Wasn't your sister enough? My death is your fault."

"Why did you kill me Mace? I loved you!" his sister called as fire engulfed her body and Mason could hear their screams.

"You killed us Mason! It's your fault. Your fault!"

––––––––––––––––

Mason shot up suddenly with a scream. He awoke in a cold sweat. He looked around and saw both Luz and King looking at him with terror.

"What's wrong with you!?" King shouted, wiping the his eyes with the back of his paw.

"Are you okay?" Luz Asked, concerned. She walked to Mason and looked him in the eyes. "Did you have a bad dream?"

"Yeah I guess I did."

"What was it about?"

"I'd rather not talk about it."

"Who's Andria?"

Mason was shocked into silence, "How do you know that name?"

"You were talking in your sleep. You said 'I'm sorry Andria, it's all my fault.'"

"You also cried a lot and whimpered like a baby," King added, chuckling.

"Andria is my sister."

"Ooh, backstory time."

"No Luz. No backstory."

"Why not. Did a demon kidnap her or is she actually an evil sorceress bent on making you her slave?"

"No, she's dead."

"Y-you mean like a demon killed her right or maybe your evil stepmother poisoned her?"

"No Luz! She died In a car accident and it's all my fault."

"How is your fault?"

"I was mad at her. She was perfect in all things. Our mom favored her and never paid attention to me. So on her sixteenth birthday mom bought her a new car. I stole the keys and flushed them down the toilet. She went to our friend in town whose a locksmith and was commissioning him to make a new key for it. She took the old family car which was beaten down. On the way the car's engines failed and she was hit by semi. After the funeral my mom left and said It should have been me… I was four at the time."

Luz hugged her friend in desperation "It's okay. I'm here. It's not your fault." she laid his head into her shoulder. Mason could swear he heard her depression

she's crying? She's actually crying! Mason tried to pull away from her. No I don't deserve this. I don't deserve support.

Luz did not release him "don't fight this. You deserve to be loved and i know that your sister doesn't blame you, because no reasonable person would."

Mason gave in and grabbed unto Luz.

A loud crash resounded in the house and the sound of a window shattering captured the attention of the trio.

"What was that!?" Mason exclaimed.

"It came from Eda's room," King replied shaking.

"We have to help her. Let's go!" Luz said, already charging toward the stairs.

Both King and Mason followed her and when they caught up to Luz they saw her in shock.

Mason saw what she was looking at. Eda's nest was in ruins and glass peppered the ground from the broken window in the other side of room.

"Where is she?" Luz asked.

Just then Owlbert flew into Luz's arms.

"Owlbert, I'm so glad you're okay. Where's Eda?"

The creature cuddled into Luz's chest and trembled in fear.

A loud roar was heard just outside the house.

"What was that?" King asked.

A smash was heard and the sound of an owl's screech followed it.

"Help! We have a monster problem." Hooty called.

"Monster problem?" both Luz and Mason said in unison.

"It's the Snaggleback!" King exclaimed. "it 'hunts during the rain and it's after us now!'"

"King calm down. It's not going to get us. We have a powerful witch on out side right Mason." Luz said, placing her hand on Mason's shoulder.

"Yeah, I'll do my best." Mason rubbed the back of his neck. Judging by what he had seen. King may have a point. This is definitely a powerful demon and he doesn't know whether it has magic resistance or not. That trait is common among the top tier demons.

"Help!"

"We're coming Hooty!" Luz called once again dashing toward danger.

"Luz Wait!" Mason ran after her and when he got to the top of the stairs he saw Luz shaking and frozen in place.

"Luz what's wrong. What is I–" Mason looked upon the object of her horror and saw it. A quadrepedal monster with feathers and big black eyes. The face… was that of Eda.

"E-Eda!" Luz exclaimed.

The creature roared and shook the house to it's core.

"Run!" Mason grabbed Luz's hand and dragged her away from the creature. By the time the duo got back into Eda' room the monster had risen to the top of the stairs. Mason threw Luz into the room and traced a circle building a wall of force keeping the beast back. Mason retreated into the room and barricaded the door with whatever he could.

Luz was shaking "How did Eda get turned into that."

"Uh, Luz?" King said, rubbing his arms.

"What is it King!"

"I think Eda may have been cursed."

"What!"

"That potion I gave you. It's not empowering Eda, it's keeping her safe from her curse."

"You knew!" Mason yelled. Holding the door with magic if only just barely.

"No! I just found this tag while you were gone." King showed the tag "It says 'a potion a day keeps the curse at bay." I'm sorry."

"It's okay. Right now, we need to get Eda back," Luz said, trying to think.

"I found the potion if we can force feed it to her," King said grabbing a similar vial in his satchel.

"Okay. How are we going to force feed it to her?" Luz Asked.

"Let me think." King tapped his head and paced the floor. "I got it!" he Exclaimed stepping toward the two humans. "What color were Eda's eyes."

"Black!" Mason said as he felt the monster push against his magic and knew she was close to breaking in.

"Perfect! That means she is sensitive to bright light, Luz we need you to do the spell Eda tried to teach you."

"Why not make Mason do it? You know I can't do magic."

"We'll need Mason's magic to hold her down while you disorient her. Please Luz."

"I don't know. I-i can't! You know I'm not like Mason. I'm just a weirdo from earth who can't do magic."

"Luz!" Mason shouted ignoring the strain of the creature destroying his magical barriers. "You are not just a weirdo. You helped me realize that I still have a lot to live for. You helped me when no one else could."

"What do you mean?"

do I dare tell her. Leave myself vulnerable and lay it all out to bare. He thought. "Luz, my dad is dead. He's been dead for a couple weeks. I found out when my master revealed it to me and now I can never leave the boiling isles. I thought I was done. More then once I considered ending it all. But that was before I met you. You saved me. You and only you could have accomplished that. Now I need your help to save us all, please Luz. You can do this!"

"Alright let me try." she traced a circle but couldn't do it.

The beast was on the last shield between her and the kids.

"Luz!"

the girl suddenly remembered something. "The video!"

"What!? This is no time to be watching a video, we're all going to die!" King exclaimed

"No I saw something when I last watched it but only for a second." Luz got out her phone and watched the video intensely. "There." she took a piece of paper from her notepad and traced something placed her hand on the paper and out of it came a light orb. "I-i did it!"

"Good job Luz. Now can you do it again?" Mason asked

"I think so. Alright King what's the plan?" Luz asked

King begins telling the duo his plan. After the explanation Luz and King got into their positions.

"Alright Mason let her in." King commanded

Mason released his control over the weakened shield. And got on his knees exhausted.

Eda burst in and roared setting her sights on the weakened Mason.

"God you're ugly." he said between gasps for breath.

The beast charged the boy and was captured in a net that Mason summoned."Luz, Now!"

The young girl jumped down on top of Eda who bucked against her.

"I'm sorry Eda this is for your own good." Luz used a piece of paper with her light glyph and slammed it into the beasts eyes.

Eda wailed in pain until she passed out.

The trio panted for breath looking at what they accomplished, cheered in success.

"We did it!" Luz exclaimed pumping her fist in the air.

"My plan worked? My plan worked! Yes I am the king of strategists." King exclaimed.

"let's not get car–. Luz look out!" too late, Eda had risen and slapped King out of the way. Grabbing Luz with her claws and squeezing the young girl.

"No!" Mason called. He could feel pain in his chest as the light in Luz's eye began to fade and he could swear she was having trouble breathing. Dammit I'm feeling woozy after holding that beast back and the net used up a lot of my power and concentration. But I must try and save Luz. One good spell razor and the beast would be ended. Mason knew that to do this would mean he'd be stuck in the isles forever, but if it meant saving Luz he would do it.

There is another way. The female voice from Masons dreams echoed in his head.

"Who are you!" Mason screamed.

That can wait. What you need to know that the Owl Lady's curse is from a magic item made by priests of the six and thus you can control her.

"How?"

focus on nothing but control and you shall have it.

Mason did as she commanded. he felt the beasts consciousness and saw that it was all too willing to serve him.

"Release." Mason was surprisingly calm. None of the fear and worry that he once felt even registered to him.

The beasts did as it was commanded, dropping Luz who was knocked out. It then stepped up to Mason with bowed head like a scolded dog.

Mason walked toward King and the beast followed.

"How?" he started but Mason lifted his hand.

"The vial." it wasn't a question but a command.

King hesitantly gave the vial to the boy and looked at him in fear.

Mason turned to the beast and stared blankly at her "drink." He held out the vial.

Eda sipped at vial as if she was being bottle fed and returned to her normal self.

As the storm began to pass Mason fell unconscious and slept.

––––––––––––––––

Mason awoke with Luz standing over him a rag gently placed on his forehead.

"Hey you," Mason said, groggy.

Luz embraced Mason with tears in her eyes. "I'm so glad you are okay."

"What happened?"

"You don't remember. It was amazing you–"

"Saved my bacon is what you did and you have potential I initially was kidding about you being able to master spell casting without a spell circle but you proved me wrong." Eda came out of the hallway. "Now how did you do it?"

"I guess I have a good teacher."

"you mean that coven stooge?" Eda huffed, not satisfied with her answer.

"No."

"Oh. Ooooh. Thanks kid."

Mason laid his head back down. And began to think how did I manage to control Eda.
