Chapter 12- The Bargain
A week had almost passed but the mansion had changed spectacularly. Most children ignored Katniss or whispered behind her back or were scared of her. Most of them were scared of her, a powerful mutant who had a father declaring war. "Shush, she is coming!" whispered a girl to her group of friends. Katniss could hear them a mile off but pretending not to hear their conversation. They started up the conversation almost immediately she walked past. Katniss sighed and went over to James, who was in a deep argument with Kenneth. "But if you, oh hi Katniss." He said. "Hey. What is wrong now?" James shrugged. "Kenneth's still going on about it was your fault your dad came." He said. Katniss sighed. "How?" she asked wearily. "How? I'll tell you how. Maybe it was the fact that—what?" he snapped at a girl who had appeared out of a wall. "The Professor wants to see you Katniss." She said. She then turned around and ran back through the wall. "Bye." She said to James and gave Kenneth a cold glare.
"The Professor was teaching a class when she came in. "And what would be the consequences of that?" he asked, spinning around in his wheelchair. Several hands went up for the question. The Professor saw Katniss come through the open door and some children looked alarmed. "And that shall be your homework. Class dismissed." He said. There was sudden scrambling noise and all the children rushed past Katniss without looking at her in the eyes. "They are terrified, you know." He said. "I don't know why." Said Katniss. "They have a god reason. Most of them are scared of humans, who are scared of them." Katniss looked at him, confused. "I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about." She said. "The cure was created to try to ease that fear the humans have for mutants. But it rippled fear in the mutants community instead. Protests were the results of that. Now, we are being blamed for the cure being a thing that only lasts a while. What do you know about it?" he asked her. They were now heading down to his office. "Where are we going?" asked Katniss. "You see, your father offered a bargain. No war if you came back to him." Katniss stared at him. "Really? Why could you not have told me already? I'm so sorry Professor, but I need to go pack!" Katniss turned around and ran out of the office. "Katniss! Wait! You don't need to go! KATNISS!" But Katniss had went up the stairs and into her room.
