I took a lot of inspiration from the Resident Evil games when writing these chapters. After all, it does have that survival-horror element to it. It makes for an exciting read. Without further ado, please enjoy the latest chapter!
People were still running in the streets of South Park, desperately trying to reach safety, wherever that may be. But during the panic, my friends and I hurried forward to try to track down the Starry Wisdom Cultists and stop them from feeding. It wasn't easy because of the blackout and it was hard to see in the darkness. Soon the streets were practically empty because everyone had already fled. As Cartman shined his flashlight around the trees, the houses and in dark corners, it was eerily silent out here now. But we knew the Starry Wisdom Cultists liked to attack their victim in the dark.
"They're out there. I just know it," I said gruffly. My eyes darted all around vigilantly to make sure none of those wiggling black tentacles were lurking anywhere nearby. "I just wish it wasn't so dark out here. Why did they cause a blackout anyway?"
At that moment, we heard the sound of a trashcan being knocked over. We turned in time to see one of those Starry Wisdom cultists stagger into view. Judging by the blood smeared around its mouth, it's been feeding. And now it moved ominously toward us and we knew this was it. "I think it's best to break their necks first," Cartman suggested with an evil grin. "That'll way it'll force the black tentacle out faster. And then we stab it to death!"
"Hold on a sec…," Human Kite held out an arm to stop The Coon.
"Da-fuck, Kahl?" Coon complained. "Don't shit on my fun."
"Don't be such a crazy asshole," Human Kite snapped back and grabbed the flashlight from the Coon. "I think I know why the Starry Wisdom cultists caused a blackout. I want to test something."
As the Starry Wisdom cultist came closer and closer, I kept looking over at Human Kite and wondering what he was planning. Toolshed had armed himself with a sledgehammer and was preparing to fight back. Coon was frowning irritably but hovered protectively behind Human Kite. The Starry Wisdom cultist got closer and then opened its mouth where the writhing black tentacle slithered out where and toothy mouth opened. Damn, what the fuck was Kyle doing? That thing was about to attack! I reached down to pull out my gun from my ankle-holster and shoot that thing when Human Kite quickly shined the flashlight on the black tentacle.
The Starry Wisdom cultist grabbed at his throat and gagged uncontrollably as the black tentacle began to squirm and flail crazily. It appeared that light seemed to damage it. So that would explain it. This was the reason why it needs to be so dark out. With the Starry Wisdom cultist momentarily distracted, The Coon used his body to easily knock the cultist onto its back and Toolshed stepped in and brought the sledgehammer down over and over onto the wriggling black tentacle until it stopped moving. This killed the cultist.
"There's only one way to stop all the Starry Wisdom cultists. We've got to turn all the lights back on," Human Kite said. "It's the only way to chase them out of town at least."
"We can do that by going to the local power station," Toolshed suggested. "If we go to the power station, we can turn the lights back on from there. That's probably where the cultists went to disable all the town lights!"
And that's when I knew it was time to take charge. "Coon, Human-Kite, you two distract the Starry Wisdom cultists. Me and Toolshed will head to the Power Station and see if we can get the lights back on. Let's hurry!"
Then we all split up into teams of two. Human Kite and Coon would keep the Starry Wisdom cultists busy while Toolshed and I hurried to the Power Station. It wouldn't be an easy trip. The Power Station was on the other side of town. But together, Toolshed and I worked together to make our way there. But along the way, something strange happened to me. Something I couldn't fully explain. A Starry Wisdom cultist stepped out of the darkness to block our path. The black tentacle lunge out of its mouth and tried to grab Toolshed. Toolshed dodged the attacking tentacle and used his sledgehammer to smash the cultist in the head. As the man fell onto his side, Toolshed then used the sledgehammer to pin the black tentacle to the ground.
I pulled out my handgun and aimed for the struggling black tentacle. Before I pulled the trigger, that's when I felt it. My power… I could feel it stirring inside me. Only it felt stronger. Even though I held the gun in my right-hand, I looked down to see the purple aura glowing in my left hand. Eldritch Power… For some reason, it frightened me. Was my power… evolving somehow? Is this what Nyarlathotep meant?
"Mysterion? What is it?" Toolshed's voice brought me back.
"I'm fine." With that, I ignored the alluring eldritch power and instead used my gun to shoot the tentacle dead. But after that, that dark eldritch power only continued to tempt me. To encourage me to use its corrupted power…
We were able to avoid running into any more Starry Wisdom cultists and finally reached the Power Station. Upon arriving at our destination, we immediately saw that something very bad happened here. The dead bodies of police-officers laid scattered about and by the looks of it, something had sucked out all of their blood. No doubt about it. The Starry Wisdom cultists did come here after all. Even in the dark, we could make out the wide field of electric generators perfectly lined up. They weren't buzzing loudly as usual which meant they were all turned off. So Toolshed and I turned our attention to the building that led underground where they probably kept the control panel and main switches.
"Well this is it," Toolshed said to me. "We'll find the right switch and restore the electricity. Hopefully that will be enough to scare them away."
"Alright. Let's do this," I agreed. I started to follow Toolshed but then I stopped. My power was acting up. It was really starting to worry me. Was something bad about to happen? My eldritch power seemed to be building up inside me. I wished I knew what it meant. "Stanley…?" I called after my boyfriend.
Toolshed stopped and turned back to me. I hesitated. I wondered how to put it into words on describing what I was feeling right now. Suddenly I didn't want Stan to come with me. I was too afraid that something bad would happen to Stan and it would be my fault. I couldn't bear to live with that kind of guilt. And yet I knew Stan wasn't the type to just sit idly by the sidelines. Stan was too heroic and noble. He'd want to help me. He would never let me go down there all alone. It was just the kind of person Stanley Marsh was.
"If I die… promise me you'll run," I said softly.
Toolshed came back and gently gripped both my shoulders and pulled me to him in a loving hug. "Kenny… I'll be okay. Nobody's dying tonight," he reassured me.
I wanted to melt in his embrace. It never ceased to amaze me how Stan could still make me go weak in knees like this. But I had to keep my emotions at bay. Instead I gently pushed him back and tried to harden myself for what was to come. "Just…promise me if something goes wrong, you'll save yourself," I said quietly. And together we entered through the door and into the building.
It was so dark inside that I could barely see what was in front of me. Luckily Toolshed went over to another dead police officer and was able to take the flashlight off of him in order to use. Now Toolshed shined the flashlight over a metal-rung stairs that led downstairs where the machinery and control panel was. With an encouraging nod from me, I followed Toolshed closely as we went down the stairs. We had to very careful. Something dangerous was lurking around here, I just know it. Once we reached the bottom, the basement was wide and spacious, plenty of room for generators and electrical panel boxes. Once we were sure there was no lurking dangers, Toolshed hurried over to the power switches and control-panel.
"I'm pretty sure I can locate the correct switch that will get these generators going again," Toolshed was saying while moving the flashlight around to read the warning labels. "Good thing I brought a lot of tools with me. I think I can find which one needs repair."
While Toolshed went off exploring, I couldn't help but gaze around uneasily in the darkness. There was that alien-feeling again… I recognized it. We weren't alone down here. We needed to hurry and get the lights back on. After ten minutes of checking some electrical boxes, Toolshed finally found the right one. He motioned for me to come over and take a look. With help from the flashlight, we saw the main switch to get the generators back on. We saw what the problem was. One of the electrical boxes contained fuses that kept the machinery running. We quickly saw one of the fuses had been ripped out, thus disabling the electrical generator from turning back on.
"Hmmm… size 5x20mm, speed T, a glass cartridge fuse, current rating 2A, voltage rating 250V," Toolshed said keenly. "Well at least we know what type of fuse to look for. Help me look for it, Mysterion."
But at that exact moment, a man's voice rang out from the darkness itself. "I have it right here…"
We both spun around at the same time. Toolshed pointed the flashlight over at a hooded figure standing over by the inactive generators. It was a Starry Wisdom cultist. As we stared back at him, he stepped toward us. I was already pointing my gun at him. I'd kill him if I had to. The cultist reached up and removed his hood. There we could see his face. I was surprised to see how young-looking he was. He looked to be in his early twenties. And yet despite his messy sandy-brown hair and brown eyes, I saw how deathly pale he was and the dark circles under his eyes.
I was hesitative on shooting him. And then I saw that his eyes were on me. He seemed to study me thoughtfully. "You're…just like…me," he said quietly. He was soft-spoken. "You too have been exposed to eldritch dimensions."
When Toolshed and I said nothing, he went on talking. "My name is Adam Godwin. I was hoping I could talk to you. To try to make you understand the consequences that awaits you in your future, Mysterion. You choose to be human? It's impossible. No one can live a normal life once they've attained eldritch power."
"That's not true," I said before I knew it. "I'm living a normal life."
"Dude, don't' engage him," Toolshed said warningly to me.
But Adam Godwin hadn't taken his eyes off of me. The look on his face was so haunted, devoid of any human emotion. It was scary to see. "You're still young….naive… You have yet to truly understand the full extent of your power. Believe me… It will consume you, it will change you. You won't recognize yourself. Maybe it has already begun…"
There it was… the old doubt. His words resonated with me. It really made me wonder. Was there actual truth to his words? My power had been growing. It's been differently lately. While these troubled thoughts continued to swirl in my mind, Toolshed stepped in front of me while armed with his sledgehammer. "Look, can you just give back the fuse you took?" Toolshed said impatiently.
The stony expression hadn't changed. Adam Godwin began to slowly advance toward us and I could sense evil emanating from within him. "It's too late…," he said softly. I can't let you leave. Our Black Tongues must be fed. And I have been blessed with many black tongues… I'm still hungry."
Black Tongue…? Was that what those slimy disgusting tentacles were called? We didn't have time to think about it. Rather if we liked it or not, we had to get the fuse back from this guy. Unfortunately it wasn't going to be easy. Adam Godwin's body suddenly began to twitch and convulse uncontrollably. As Toolshed and I gaped at him, we realized that Adam Godwin must have been the one who killed all the police-officers here.
A particular large black tentacle thrust aggressively out of his mouth, followed by two black tentacles ripping out through his back. Toolshed and I backed away in horror as we realized that Adam Godwin had three black tentacles inhabiting his cursed body. I think we both froze up in fear. It happened so fast. The middle tentacle lunged at me like a striking snake and I felt those fangs sink into my chest. Crying out in pain, the black tentacle easily lifted me up and flung me like a ragdoll. I landed hard on my side and I already could feel the blood oozing from my chest wounds.
"Kenny! No!" I could hear Toolshed shout my name.
I looked up to see the black tentacle hovering above me, ready to sink its fangs into me again. Where the fuck was my gun? Damn! I dropped it somewhere! It was too dark to see where it was. To my horror, I realized I couldn't move my body. I looked up in time to see the black tentacle about to strike. Then Toolshed quickly used his sledgehammer to whack the black tentacle to stop it from attacking me. But then Adam Godwin turned his attention onto Toolshed now.
"Run Stan! Save yourself!" I shouted to him.
Toolshed never got the chance. Godwin's black tentacle slammed into him hard, sending Toolshed flying back and smacking painfully into the wall before falling to the ground. And as Toolshed achingly tried getting back to his feet, Godwin was already upon him, his black tentacle forcefully pressed Toolshed up against the wall, trapping him in place. Struggling to push the black tentacle off, Toolshed tried reaching for his sledgehammer. He couldn't do it. It was out of reach now.
"No! Stop!" I cried angrily. Goddamnit! Can't stop bleeding…the pain…shit… Can't die now…," I used all my strength to get back up. I ignored the bleeding. I ignored the pain threatening to paralyze me. I frantically tried looking for my gun. I had to save Stan… The eldritch power was growing stronger in me. My instinct to survive driving me to act… I couldn't lose Stan like this. Not the man I love…
Toolshed couldn't get away. He looked up in time to see all three black tentacles open their teethy mouths and lunge at the same time for his throat. "NOOOOOOOO!"
Toolshed shut his eyes and heard the sound of crushing flesh, the sound of splattered blood. He was shaking from head to toe but it took a few seconds for Toolshed to realize that the black tentacles never touched him. And when he opened his eyes, Toolshed saw to his astonishment that Mysterion had practically punched a hole into Adam Godwin's chest from behind. Adam was wide-eyed and his mouth open in shock. And as Toolshed stared in amazement, that's when he first noticed dark purple aura glowing from Mysterion's fist. Mysterion pulled back his bloodied fist and watched coldly as Adam Godwin along with his three black tentacles slumped lifelessly to the ground.
The silence afterwards was eerie. I couldn't stop panting from the rush of adrenaline coursing through me. This power…it felt good. It was just like getting high. But it wasn't enough. I wanted to keep on killing. "Kenny?" Stan's voice seemed to bring me out of it.
I peered over at him and noticed the look on Stan's face. I saw something in Stan's eyes. Was it concern? Fear? Suddenly I felt ashamed of what I'd done. I just wanted to protect my boyfriend. I didn't mean to… I stepped away from Adam Godwin's corpse and I felt genuine remorse. Nothing about this was good. How could I have lost control like that? Stan placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. I needed a moment…
"Are you okay?" I said at last. My own voice sounded shaky.
"I'm not hurt," Stan said reassuringly. Then he reached down and after searching Adam Godwin's corpse, he finally found what he was looking for. "I have the fuse. We can restore electricity to the town now," Stan said. And yet he couldn't stop looking at me worriedly. "Are you okay, Kenny? I really got scared."
"I'll be okay," I assured him. The bite marks on my chest still hurt like a son of a bitch, but I've suffered worse wounds than that. "Come on. Let's get the power back on. It'll stop the other Starry Wisdom cultists from feeding their black tentacles more human blood."
And yet I couldn't take my eyes off of my left glove which was still covered in Adam Godwin's blood. I'd been so desperate. I wanted to protect Stan. Somehow I ended up using the forbidden eldritch power to depose my enemy. But I didn't like the feeling it gave me. Is this what Nyarlathotep meant? Was my power getting stronger? And if so, would it only continue to try to corrupt me like this? From that moment on, I swore to myself to never let Nyarlathotep lure me over to the dark side. I didn't want to end up like Adam Godwin. A man who all but gave up his humanity a long time ago and allowed the evil forces of eldritch power to control him…
