Chapter Nine
~.~
In honor of Adora's birthday, I'll be writing this Modern AU fic.
Happy Birthday, Adora!
(Becky's POV)
I'm in the kitchen with my second girlfriend, adoptive sister, and one of our best friends, Bow.
We're baking brownies for Adora's birthday.
We're home from school, and we asked my adoptive parents, Angella and Micah, to take Adora out for a while so we could set up her surprise party.
It's been a few months since my suicide attempt, and I've gotten so much stronger.
If I had succeeded, I wouldn't be here to bake brownies for one of my two girlfriends.
"Okay, it says we need 1 egg, 1/3 cup of vegetable oil and ¼ cup of water for each box of brownie mix." Catra says.
"Guys, we don't have any eggs! What are we going to do?" Bow asks, peeking in the fridge.
"Relax, Bow. If we've got applesauce, we won't need eggs."
"Glimmer's right. If my memory serves correctly, we need ¼ cup of applesauce to replace 1 egg." I say.
"Good news. You've got a jar full of applesauce." Bow says, looking in the fridge.
"Great. We'll use that instead. Now, Mom and Dad will be back soon with Adora. So we need to work swiftly and carefully." Glimmer says.
We get to work mixing the brownie batter and putting it into the glass pan. We repeat the steps for the second box of brownie mix.
After the oven has preheated, we stick the brownies in and set the timer for the time needed for baking.
While the brownies are baking, we set up the banner as our friends from school, Perfuma, Scorpia, Spinnerella, Netossa, Double Trouble, and Entrapta, arrive.
After we've set up for the party and the brownies are out of the oven, we get into position and wait for Adora and my adoptive parents to arrive.
When they do, Adora looks around the room in confusion, wondering why it's dark.
"SURPRISE!" We all exclaim.
"Oh, you guys didn't have to do this. Thank you." Adora says.
"Happy birthday, Adora. We love you." Catra and I say.
We sing "Happy Birthday" to her, and we bring out the brownies with a candle in the middle.
"Make a wish, baby girl." I tell Adora.
Adora closes her eyes, then opens them and blows out the candle.
We chat casually about things while eating brownies and ice cream.
I hand Adora the present I had gotten for her. Spoiler Alert: It's a promise ring. I'd gotten Catra one for her birthday, and it's high time that Adora got her own.
The promise ring has Catra's birthstone (opal), my birthstone (diamond), and Adora's birthstone (garnet), and is silver.
"Oh, it's beautiful, Becky. How much was this?"
"That's for me to know, and you to never find out."
"Becky, you can't have spent all of your college savings on this ring!"
"I didn't."
"Fair enough."
We all continue chatting, and, soon, the day is over.
"Did you have a good birthday, Adora?"
"I sure did. I love my promise ring. Hey, do you think the three of us will ever be able to get married to each other when we're older?" Adora asks, looking at me.
"I hope so."
"I hope so, too."
