BOOK TWO
CHAPTER ONE: THE ACROBAT
Azula watched as the sun set over ember island. It had taken less than a day to get here, and she had decided she would visit her friend in the morning. She heard Tylee was performing with the circus here, and wanted to catch a performance before they had to depart. She truly felt bad, but knew she couldn't do it without Tylee. It wasn't that she wasn't powerful enough to, but Azula didn't have the strength her friend had. She didn't have the optimism either, and knew she would need that.
Her thoughts were interrupted when she felt the vibration of footsteps behind her. However, she didn't turn to face the coming person. She knew who it was, and truthfully she would rather not acknowledge him. Maybe if she pretended not to notice him he would leave her alone.
However, he had other plans. He walked up to the princess and began speaking. Normally Azula didn't mind when she wasn't given the proper greeting, however she had a severe dislike for the admiral.
"Princess, are we sure about this. Tylee is a nonbender, she will offer no help against the city of Ba Sing Se." He said angrily. They had already discussed this. He though her friends incompitent, and she didn't give a shit about his opinion.
She sighed, not wanting to go over this again. "You forget your place admiral, you do not get to question me. Tylee is more competent than all your men combined." She said this in a nuetral tone, not bothering she glance his way. "Furthermore, it is respectful to bow to you superiors Zhao."
He paused for a moment, lips pressed in a thin line. Who was she to talk to him this way. Yes, she may have been the Fire princess, but he was soon to be the firelord. Perhaps she didn't know this, he resided. Maybe he should tell her. His lips shifted into a grin.
"As future firelord-"
Azula cut him off with a look that caused his body to be overwhelmed by fear. "Me and my father already discussed this. I'm surprised he hasnt informed you." Truthfully she wasn't. It was clear her father wanted the admiral to be loyal to him. He was holding the throne infront of Zhao, dangling it just out of reach. It was time for Azula to cut the string. "My father and I decided that I will not be marrying one as incompetant as yourself."
She smiled at his reaction. Instead of leaving there, she continued, pouring salt on the woud she had created. "We are going in a small force. In Ba Sing Se, it is important not to showcase our firebending. It will be an advantage to have two non benders on the team. Especially two as talented as my friends. And, even it was not a smart decision. It is not your place to question your princess." With that she left him, walking towards her corridors.
The men noticed her sour mood, parting to allow for her to walk to the stairs. She made her way to her room. She sighed with relief as soon as the metal doors closed behind her. Azula took over her armor and looked in the mirror. She instantly notice her hair price. She moved her hands over the pin, feeling the intricate golden designs.
"Father, is it okay if I take a leave from training." She asked after she had just performed a perfect Kata. She could tell he was angry with her request, but he didn't say anything. She loved the newfound power she had over him.
"What for?" he asked, striding over to his daughter. It was less than a few steps until he was by her side.
"When I first arrived here, I met a girl." she smiled at the memory.
"Ahh I remember," he said with a scowl on his face. "News of your encounter spread quickly. Us royals cannot be seen interacting with the peasantry such as you did Azula."
She thought about it. "I thought us royals could do what we please. Why should we let other people dictate our lifestyle? Are we not the ones with the power."
Her father sighed, and she responded with a smile. She knew he would have to agree. "Well said my child." he said smiling. "Do you wish to visit this family?"
Azula nodded, smiling ear to ear. "Yes, I found the girl quite fascinating."
"What about her," her father had asked.
She paused, contemplating what to say. "Her bravery. Her loyalty to her nation. She ran away from her family for a glimpse of the princess. We need more people like her." Truly she was brave, and loyal as well. But, these weren't the traits that had interested Azula. No, it was the pure innocence of the child. It was the way she looked at Azula as if she was good. The girl didn't see the monster Azula truly was.
"Why do you wish to visit them?" Her father asked, sounding almost intrigued.
"I wanted to ask her to attend the Fire Academy for girls." Azula decided. "We could pay for it, and I think she could become a true asset to our nation." She paused, "she is wasted on peasantry."
He nodded, seeming to believe Azula. So, that afternoon she had shown up at the house of the family. The girl had been ecstatic to see her, and the mother slightly confused. However, she had been allowed in. Once she had walked through the threshold, she allowed herself to get straight to business.
"Hey Kiyi," the mother said, sensing the urgency in her look, "Why don't you go upstairs and find your doll to show Azula."
The child, Kiyi, nodded and ran upstairs to find her doll, leaving Azula alone with the women
"I'm sorry to come so unexpectedly, this is urgent." Azulas voice made it clear this was true. The women nodded, motioning fro her to come into the kitchen. Azula followed her without hesitation.
She instantly noticed a man, sitting at the table sipping tea. He seemed to be pouring over some scrolls, but as soon as they came in he looked toward her. His eyes narroud as they landed on her breastplate, displaying the royal crest. He made his dislike for her clear when he didn't even bother to bow. If Azula was her father she would have had him hung, but she wasn't. Instead she nodded to acknowledge his presence.
It was the women who gave her husband a stern look, forcing him to look up from his paper. "Her majesty has something important to talk to us about."
The man sighed, looking to the princess then his wife. His eyes eventually landed back on his scroll.
The women sighed. "I apologize for my husband. Noren can be rude and foolish at times."
I see that, Azula smeared slightly. She hated not being shown the respect she deserved, however she needed to remember why she was here.
"There's a war coming to the city." She recalled what she had found in the library. There was a solar eclipse that would leave the fire nation defenseless. She knew she must not only be the one who knew this. As soon as she found her uncle she would tell him. That was the day she planned to dethrone her father. "I need you to get as many people out of the capital city as possible. I don't wish for many causalties."
The women looked at her, a confused expression painted of her features. Why was the princess telling her this. Why not her father. And most importantly, "aren't you going to Ba Sing Se to end the war?"
Azula shook her head. "Trust me, that is only the beginning. You need to get as many people out as possible without drawing to much suspicion. My father cannot know about this."
The women shook her head, clearly confused. The man was looking over his scroll, gazing at the princess suspiciously. This had to be a trap to get them to betray the firelord. What else could it be. What she was saying made no sense. If the princess knew about an upcoming attack, why couldn't she go to her father and tell her.
"All you need to know is that the end of the war is coming. I have been paying attention to you. I know you do not support it. Every one else who is allied with you must get out of the city before I come back." She snarled, threatening the women.
The man understood now, or so he thought. The princess wanted the traitors out of her city. She was doing it descretly as to not call attention due to the amount of blood spill. She was giving them a chance to live.
He was wrong. He didn't understand. Azula wasn't coming back to help her father cleanse the capital, but rather to cleanse it of him. She didn't want any innocents getting hurt. She was about to threaten the man when she heard small footsepts approaching her.
Azula forced herself to smile and turned around. She stared down at the young girl, so innocent and pure. She had the childhood Azula never did. She bent down so she was level with the girl, who was holding something to her excitedly.
"I remember you telling me that your brother stole your hairpiece," well not exactly, " so I got made you this." She held up a gold leaf. It took the form of fire, yet it's shape was clear. Somehow, Azula could make out waves within the flames. She could make out designs of wind blowing with the fire. It was truly beautiful. "My great grandpa had it, and I thought you would like it." Kiyi said.
Azula sighed, oh to be a child. "It's very pretty Kiyi, but it sounds like it should stay with you." The girl grounded and lowered her head. The women sighed behind Azula and shook her head.
"It would honor us if you wore it your majesty." She said smiling at her daughter.
Azula nodded and held it close to her chest. The gesture meant so much to her. She had never truly had a family, so to be given an heirloom of another meant more than she could say. They had occasionally visited her in the palace, and she had grown close to the girl. However, this was something else.
She turned back to the girl, a year in her eyes. "Thank you, it's lovely."
She placed the hair peice on the stand beside her bed, and changed into her night robes. She allowed her hair to be released from it's topknot, brushing through her raven locks. She had always prided herself in her hair. It was a symbol of honor for the royals of her nation. Even now, knowing all she did, she still felt like it connected her to her people.
She sighed as she finish smoothing out the tangles and curled herself under her sheets. The silk felt smooth against her skin. The sound of waves called to her, soothing her as she lay her head against her pillow. However, she knew she would get no sleep tonight.
Instead she layer there the whole night. She went over the next day in her head. What she would tell her friend. She decided she would tell Tylee everything. Tylee deserved to know. She had helped Azula master airbending. She hadn't told anyone even now who Azula was.
The princess smiled at the thoughts of the scrolls she kept in a bag under her bed. The artifacts of the once great nomads. She couldn't wait to show them to her friend. She was almost sure Tylee was a descendant of the nomads, though she knew the girl didn't know. Thoughts of her future kept her up, and in the morning, when a knock came on her door, the princess was relieved.
Though she hadn't slept, she felt well rested enough. She dressed herself and placed the pin in her topknot. Unlike she normally was, the princess was not wearing armor. Instead she was wearing a gown. She wasn't the biggest fan out it, but she wasn't here to fight. It stretched down to her ankles and was made of a light fabric. The back of the dress was missing, and it closed around her hips. She didn't like having so much of her exposed. Especially because staring at her back she couldn't help remember the feeling of his heated fingers against her skin. Though the scars we not visible, they were there. Sighing, Azula exited her chambers, quickly heading to the top deck.
Based on the commotion, Azula assumed the were docking. She looked out at the land and smiled. She couldn't wait to see her friend. She was so distracted in her thoughts that she didn't realize someone was beside her. She only noticed him when she felt a cold hand on her back.
She jumped despite herself, recoiling at his slimy touch. She turned to her side, jabbing a fist of flames in his direction. It knocked him backwards and send him falling onto the deck. The men watched as their Admiral tried to regain his composure. He staired at Azula, appalled she had done such a think.
"Next time your hands wander where they don't belong admiral," she said gazing threateningly at him. "My hands may find the selves at your throat." With that she turned away, ready to face her friend.
The crowned princess walked down the ramp, followed by ten guards. She had decided to keep the admiral on the ship. Her father wanted him with her at Ba Sing Se, he never said anything about while she was finding her friends. So, she and her escorts walked down the dock. Many eyes where on her, surprised at the visit of the princess. However, she was used to it, and made her way to the circus.
"What are we doing here?" One of her guards asked. Luitenent Lee, the same man who had ruined her plan. She had come to the conclusion he had given her away on purpose, and admired his loyalty. That's why he was with her now, her personal escort. He didn't understand the reason she had not had him executed and never would. However, he didn't mind keeping his head.
"I am here to find my friend, who I have been informed will be pormforming at this exact spot." The man raised his eyebrows, but just shook his head. He decided not to ask the question eating at him.
The show was very interesting. Being the daughter of the firelord, the princess was given the best seat in the house (or tent). She enjoyed all of the performances, especially her friend. The agility she performed with was something Azula could never hope to achieve. It had once made her jealous, however now she was simply impress.
When the show ended Azula found herself waking to the tent of the lead acrobatic. She told her soldiers to wait outside, and slowly entered the tent. As she did so, nervous feelings were filling her body. She hadn't seen her friend in years. What if she had changed. What if she didn't want to join Azula. What if-
All of her doubts disappeared as soon as she saw Tylee. She was resting on her hands, her feet in the air. She seemed to be thinking of something, as she had not noticed Azula walk in. Azula walked deeper into the tent. The girl looked up at Azula with wide gray eyes.
"Tylee, could that possibly be you?"
The instant Tylee realized who it was, she gracefully bent out of her position. Her eyes widened and her grin became unatilural. She lept to Azula and wrapped her into a hug. Azula didn't hesitate to hug the girl back.
She wrapped her arms around her friend and allowed herself a moment of comfort. She breathed in the familiar scent of her friend. How she had missed Tylee's scent. How she had missed her smile. How she had missed her unbridled optimism. How Azula had missed her. After what seemed to short they pulled away, smiling at each other.
"What are you doing here?" Tylee asked her friend, knowing it was unlike Azula to simply visit her friends.
"I was wondering if you wanted to join me on a mission." Azula paused, letting the information sink in.
"I don't know Zula, I'm so happy hear. My auras never been pinker." Tylee said smiling at her friend.
Azula sighed, she knew this wasn't going to be easy. She sat down and motioned for Tylee to join her. Tylee titled her head slightly confused, but sat down. Azula closed her eyes, knowing she had to tell her friend the truth.
"I need your help defeating my father." Tylee staired at her, utterly confused. Azula sighed again and tried her best to explain. "The war has been going on for almost a hundred years, and it needs to end. As the Avatar it is my duty to end it and restore balance. By the end of summer the comet of Sozin will be returning, and my father will use it to destroy the world. I used to think he wanted to simply spread the firebations prosperity, but it's not that. He thinks of the other nations as inferior to him. Have you seen what our soldiers do to the villages they have conquered. They take them and use their people however the see fit. They kill the men, and take the women. The use the children for their pleasure, and destroy the innocence of them. It's wrong Tylee, and I need to stop it." Azula waited for her friend to react, not knowing what she would say. She wondered it her friend would agree with her. What she would think.
All her worries vanished as Tylee gave her a nod. "I agree," she said simply, as if it was obvious. "I'm glad you final came to understand this." Tylee the. Drew closer to Azula, grabbing her trembling hands. The acrobat move her hands to Azulas face, whipping away the tears that were falling rapidly from her eyes. And, in an unexpected turn of evens, she pressed their lips together.
