Chapter 10

Best Laid Plans

Steven took a breath "okay so what now?"

Then before anyone could anything a voice called from downstairs "Ray Ray are you here?"

It was his mom. "Yeah Mom?"

"There's a message for you that was on the door from your friend Pearl!"

The group of four traded looks before they headed downstairs and Ray Ray managed to grab the message. Luckily his mother seemed preoccupied so he was able to get it without fuss. Which was a good thing since he did not have an explanation for his new blue streak of hair.

So, getting it and reaching the safety of June's lair Ray Ray opened the wax seal on the letter (which thankfully his mom didn't seem to pay much mind too but then he's blown-up potatoes in the microwave so maybe her standards were a bit skewered) and quickly scanned it.

His jaw dropped as he started before huffing out "hoo boy."

"What is it?"

"The ransom." Ray Ray hands Steven the letter to read and Connie steps closer picking up Monroe so they could all read it and while the newcomers could only be confused, Monroe's jaw dropped.

"Oh, you haf ta be kiddin me…"

A darkened room filled with boxes and clutter all indistinguishable in the current lighting. Then sound.

Thump. Thump. Thump! EERRRNN! Click!

And there was light as Ray Ray with Monroe in his arms stepped into Ahmah's attic.

"I canna believe we're doing this…"

"We don't have that many options Monroe, now after the last time we left it close by the hatch I think… Ahah!"

Monroe looked toward where Ray Ray's gaze was focused and sees the price. Propped up in a box leaning against a wall by a window is the scepter June once used to summon the Immortal Thor.

"Fine but if we're doing this we're gonna be smart about it."

"Yup."

Some hours later had the trio of Ray Ray, Rose Guard, and Fortune Lass in the Underworld the scepter slung over Ray Ray's shoulder with his Boom Fist utility belt slung around his waist right before Dark Pearl's mansion.

Unlike before the front gates were closed and no one was fool enough to believe those things were not enchanted with magic to defend.

Luckily the front gates were equipped with a bell. Pulling the silk cord, the bell gave an elegant ring, that almost sounded pretentious to their ears.

Then from the air came Dark Pearl's voice "ah you've brought the scep_ oh Steven you're still alive how interesting."

Steven frowned unhappily at how blasé she sounded while Connie actually outright scowled, Ray Ray just bit his lip and said "are you going to let us in lady?"

"You? Yes. The other two? …Enter at your own peril…" And with what could only be a dramatic creak to mess with them the gates swung open. The trio looked and with a simultaneous nod Connie gestured and said a short incantation making a length of rope appear and tie itself around their waists. And in single file they headed into the building.

Entering the foyer, the trio took in the dim lighting Dark Pearl was really working the ambience as she spoke from nowhere again "head up the stairs and down the hallway."

They complied and entered a curious room it was a circular chamber: all gray stone and carved into the walls, the floor, the ceiling were lines, circles, and strange sigils. Both Fortune Lass and Ray Ray got odd expressions on their faces at the sight.

"What is it?" Steven who was in the middle asked them both and in unison they said:

"I don't recognize these symbols." The two gave a start and looked at each other then back and it was Connie who said "and when I really look at them, I can't really see them?" She finished confusedly.

"Oh, good it's not just me, thought something was wrong with my eyes for a second there."

Then before anyone could say anything else Dark Pearl said "place the scepter in the indentation in the middle of the room." And they looked and there was a perfect hole in the floor dead center.

Approaching it Ray Ray glanced back and in the corner of his eye saw his new friends nod at him and Ray Ray took a deep breath.

Here we go he thought to himself.

Unslinging the scepter, he twirled it hand over hand the gem at the top lighting it up and he slammed the scepter into the ground activating the magic in an attempt to summon an Immortal and… nothing happened.

After a moment of silence Dark Pearl said in amusement "nice try, but did you really think I wouldn't ward my home against such attempts? Luckily I am gracious and will not count this attempt towards your family."

Then there's a loud sigh "now let's not beat around the bush. I would throw you out but you would hassle me and I'd rather not drag this out."

The door across from them opened "come and face me and your doom."

The trio once more shared a look and they nodded. In truth none of them HAD expected the scepter to work so the plan it was.

Stall for time.

Back in the lair at Juniper's house Monroe set down the last component he needed and looked into the mirror.

Now to hopefully get ahold of the Elders Monroe thinks to himself but before he could do anything else there was a flash of light from behind him!

Passing through the door Dark Pearl opened for them Ray Ray grimaced. He recognized this hallway having run through it barely a few hours ago.

And sure, enough they emerged into the room where Dark Pearl had tried to kill them only this time the three of them were on top of the stairs and she was at the back of the room.

With a short command the rope keeping them linked vanished.

Dark Pearl saluted them with her sword "shall we begin?"

Ray Ray immediately went for one of the containers on his belt and threw an egg-shaped stone at the enchanted Gem.

Who quickly with a swipe cut it in half which Ray Ray had actually been counting on as it exploded in a loud cloud of smelly blue smoke.

Swinging her sword fanned it away and in came a glowing green web courtesy of Connie which proceeded to wrap around Dark Pearl.

Said individual once more gave the girl a flat look and chanted "Unsquiera Despariot" which blasted the web away, then she swung her sword the blade starting to glow with power but before it got too far it rebounded off something.

Something a pale pink color. A bubble, she was inside a bubble, craning her neck she saw Steven right behind her arm outstretched.

Dark Pearl sighed and with a quick jab popped the bubble only for something to hit her chest.

She looked down for a split second and then she was spinning in a small cyclone with the sounds of monkeys screaming in her ears.

When the world stopped spinning, she looked towards the Te Xuan Xe's sibling and he was gone. So was Connie.

And then something clubbed her on the back of the head, hard.

It flipped over the top of her head and Dark Pearl saw Steven's shield fall to the ground with a clatter.

Dark Pearl whirled around only to see Ray Ray throw something at her which again she sliced in half without really thinking about and this time there was an explosion of goo encasing her head to toe.

Is their goal to just cause chaos? The Gem thought angrily to herself unaware that, that was in fact their plan. And then her eyes widened as from within her base she felt her wards break!

Then she took a green blast of magic to the face knocking her over with a loud wet splat.

This ticked her off. Her eyes literally went white with power and there was a huge surge of energy that blew out throwing the trio off from their next round of cause chaos.

"ENOUGH OF THIS!" Dark Pearl roared and there was a loud clinking sound as she stuck her sword into the ground and in response an absolutely massive and elaborate magical array traced in bright white light and it gave off POWER.

The pressure was enough to scare the trio senseless for a moment but then Steven acted quickly trying to form a bubble to protect them but when he tried the pink energy was just dissipated in the pressure.

And Connie was just trying to remember a spell that could protect them since Vortress Nebulae only worked one way.

Ray Ray was just resigning himself to a big hit as from Dark Pearl she surrounded by a while column of light that expanded out towards them.

And then there was a room shaking explosion and through the dust and smoke and sparkles of magic Dark Pearl looked a bit tired but satisfied and then it cleared and her face went with horror.

As surrounding the trio of kids was a pink barrier. A BRIGHT pink barrier.

Then before anything else happened from the ground below Dark Pearl deep blue water welled up from the ground and surged up forming arms which made fists that proceeded to just try and pound her into the ground.

It didn't work as she flipped away from them and she looked towards the stairs with a snarl on her face as with disbelief Ray Ray, Connie, and Steven still enshrouded in the barrier also looked towards the stairs.

At the top one arm outstretched ad aglow with mana while the other had a clenched fist magic swirling around it was Gwendolyn Tennyson, Lucky Girl.

Next to her a figure with blue skin, hair, and eyes. Dressed in a skirt, top with varying shades of blue and wings made of water outstretched from her back, both arms held aloft to manipulate water was Lapis Lazuli.

But before anyone could react there was a shout.

"HEY TWINKLE TOES!"

And who should come stomping in to stand between the two, rough and looking scuffed up to heck and back maybe perhaps literally was Juniper Lee.

She looked pretty ticked, all three women did actually.

This was going to be messy.
