Boss Hogg walked into the law office. It'd been such a stressful day. Luke was gone, Bo was in the hospital, Jesse was ecstatic because he couldn't find Daisy, and he had a random kid to take care of now, Rosco was nowhere to be found, there was a blocked road out near Still Site four. Could it get any worse?
He walked into his office, hoping he'd left his cigar box inside. To his surprise, he found an envelope sitting on his desktop. He plopped down in his chair, and picked it up. The front of it said: Urgent! Boss Hogg shrugged, and opened it. He pulled out the letter, and unfolded it, his heart stopped when he recognized the handwriting. He began reading it.
Commissioner,
By the time you read this, it'll be too late. I have the Marine, the girl, and the sheriff. If you wish to see the three of them alive again, you must sign over all of your businesses and your commissionary to me. If I don't hear from you in a few days, the sheriff will be the first to go. Either that, or he'll end up like the boy we sent to the hospital. If you want to prevent any more 'accidents, you'll cooperate, and go through with the paperwork.
-Texas
Boss Hogg's blood turned cold. That explained where Daisy and Rosco were. Boss Hogg couldn't just give Texas his entire livelihood, though, it would mean Rosco could get hurt, or worse. Boss Hogg had never been so unsure before. For once, he had no Plan B, and was clueless as to what to do next.
There was one thing that didn't add up: How did Texas know Luke was a marine? Only Hazzard locals, and those who'd served with him knew that, so how did Texas know? He thought for a moment, then rushed out the door.
Luke, Daisy, and Rosco sat in the cold room together. The three of them were all thinking different thoughts, but no one cared to voice them. They sat in silence for a long time. Things had gone downhill so fast.
Luke was worried about Bo. He didn't know if he was alive or dead, how bad he was hurt. Luke was scared to death for his family.
On top of that, something he'd nearly forgotten about had been brought up. It was something he'd hoped no one would notice, and that he could just forget about. On the inside of his left forearm was a tattoo. Just words and numbers in Vietnamese, but he knew what every one of them meant.
Daisy was worried for her family, Bo, Luke, and Jesse, but the young boy she'd found was her deepest concern at the moment. She hoped he was doing alright, and that Jesse'd take care of him, just like he had with her.
Rosco was afraid for his life. He didn't know what was going to happen to him, or if the Four of Spades wanted him dead or alive, or if they were going to do to him what they'd done to Bo. Either way, he was scared.
"Is… is Bo alive?" Luke asked.
Rosco didn't answer.
"I'm sure he is, Luke." Daisy said reassuringly.
Luke sighed. "It shoulda been me."
"Why? So Bo could take your place here?"
"Good point."
Rosco looked up. "Ain't you even the least bit afraid of what they're gonna do to us?"
Luke dropped his gaze. "No, whatever they've got planned, I've probably seen or survived worse."
Rosco had almost forgotten that Luke had been in Vietnam. Rumor was, he was a Prisoner of War once he went MIA. Nobody knew for sure though, Luke never talked about it.
His thoughts turned to Clayton. He didn't know if he should bring it up or not. He decided he'd better not, he didn't want to add to the tension that filled the room.
Daisy shivered, her breath came out in a white, frozen cloud. Luke slipped his jeans jacket around her shoulders.
"They'll find us Daisy, don't worry." Luke said.
"I just hope you're right." Daisy replied.
"Right about what?"
"About havin' survived worse."
"I… I was younger back then, I didn't think anythin' could happen, we were so close to camp, but I was wrong. We got ambushed just outside the trenchline, back in '72. For three years I was stuck in Akatashi."
Daisy and Rosco could see the pain behind Luke's eyes. So, the rumors were true.
"I remember wakin' up, seein' the numbers on my arm. I was terrified. I didn't know what was gonna happen, or what they were gonna do to me. I know how you feel, Rosco, but trust me nothin' could be as bad as what the Viet Cong did." Luke explained.
"If… if you don't mind me askin', how'd you ever get out?" Rosco asked.
"Daisy, you remember Le Minh, don't you?"
"Yeah, I remember her. She's the refugee you brought back to America with you." Daisy replied.
"Well, she was at Akatashi, she worked there. We became friends early on, we looked out for each other. I taught her some basic English, she told me what the words on my arm meant. We got… pretty close. When we saw the opportunity to get outta there, we took it.
There was twelve of us that left Akatashi, only half made it out alive. Le Minh, me, and four others. Outta the six we lost, three of them were recaptured, probably tortured to death for all I know. Two were shot and killed, they tried to run, but got hit, just two lucky shots, nothin' more. The last one was hurt pretty bad. We carried him as far as we could, but he died after a day or two.
I knew we couldn't keep goin' on like that, so I decided to send someone to get help. Leah was the only one who didn't look like they were about to drop dead where they were standin'. The only problem was she didn't speak much English, other than the few bits and pieces I'd taught her.
I wrote down the name of the base camp, told her the sign would look like that. She understood, thankfully. I gave her my dogtags, and told her to show them to the people there, have them follow her back to us.
She got back in four hours, I was surprised at first, but then I refocused, and got everyone into the APC. I don't think I've ever seen Leah so happy when she saw the Statue of Liberty from the plane window."
"No honey, the happiest she's ever been was when she got her citizenship."
"Oh yeah, I remember that. I was in the house, and I came runnin' out when I heard her scream. I thought she'd gotten bit by a rattlesnake or somethin'."
"So did I."
The two of them laughed.
"So what does it mean?" Rosco asked.
"What?" Luke replied, confused as to what the sheriff was asking.
"The Vietnamese on your arm."
"Six eight two dash eight four nine six, Camp Akatashi, 1972."
Rosco grew silent, and nodded. He had no idea, nobody did. Luke had gone through a lot in Vietnam, more than anyone could imagine
"I'm tellin' ya, he won't give you the county, he's too stubborn." A voice growled from outside the door.
"He will if he sees his pathetic excuse for a sheriff dead." Another voice argued.
"Good God." Rosco choked out.
"Calm down Rosco, they ain't gonna do anythin'." Luke ordered.
"Uh uh, I don't believe you, I'm gettin' outta here."
He stood up, and walked to the window. He punched the glass as hard as he could. It didn't even crack. He looked around for a way to open or dislodge it.
"Rosco stop, that window ain't openin', and it ain't breakin' neither. Pull yourself together, and just listen to me." Luke growled.
Rosco whipped around angrily. "I ain't dyin' here! I know they're gonna kill me, who knows, they might kill you too!"
"Nobody's dyin' here. It ain't like we're gonna sit back and let 'em kill us, none of us 're goin' down without a fight."
"Rosco, I really think you should listen to Luke, he survived Vietnam and Hollow Hill." Daisy said.
Rosco began to calm down a little. "Alright… what's our next move then?"
"We wait, I need some time to figure out how we can get outta here. I promise you, we'll all get outta this alive." Luke reassured.
Rosco nodded nervously. Just then, the door opened, and Russel and Texas walked in.
"Hello." Texas said in a singsong voice.
"What do you want?" Luke growled.
Texas pointed his gun at Rosco, and smiled. "The commissioner needs some motivation."
Russel grabbed Daisy's arm, and pulled her up.
"No! Let go of me!" Daisy yelled.
"Why don't we take her instead?" Russel asked.
Texas smiled again, and laughed. "Great idea hoss."
"Luke, do somethin'!" Rosco hissed.
Luke looked to him, then he looked to Daisy. "No."
"What?" They both exclaimed.
Texas smiled, and put his gun away. Russel let go of Daisy's arm.
"You're a smart one ain't ya?" Texas asked.
Luke didn't answer, he just continued to stare him down. He could tell Texas was beginning to get uncomfortable. The two gang members backed out of the room, and shut the door. Daisy and Rosco looked at Luke questioningly.
Luke sighed. "They were tryna get inside your head. They ain't gonna kill you Rosco, and they ain't gonna hurt you Daisy. They wanna mess you up, control you with fear. They want you to be afraid of them. Well, they've got you right where they want ya."
Daisy and Rosco looked down disappointedly.
"You knew the whole time, didn't you?" Rosco asked.
"I told you to keep your cool. This's what they tried to do to us in Vietnam, you can't let these people get to you, it'll be a lot worse if you do, trust me."
"And how would you know?"
"Do you really want to know the answer to that?" Luke's face grew grim.
"Yes, well… I don't know. Maybe."
Luke sighed. "It was earlier in the first year. There was a kid who'd gotten drafted, he was in the same building with us. None of us knew where he came from, or who he was. He was just scared outta his mind. The Viet Cong filled his head with suggested torture methods, and slow, painful deaths. The kid got so scared, he completely lost it. He went crazy, he beat his head against the wall until he broke his skull open and died."
"I… I'm sorry I asked."
"Don't worry about it."
Daisy had pictured it, she looked like she was going to throw up.
"I'm sorry."
Daisy swallowed hard, and gathered her senses. "I'm okay… I'm fine."
"Can we all agree to keep our horrifyin'ly disturbin' past to ourselves in the future?" Rosco asked.
"With pleasure." Luke replied.
Bo remembered being in a lot of pain, but things were hazy other than that. He remembered seeing a lot of faces. He saw Cooter, and Jesse. He heard Rosco's voice, it was so far away. He remembered hearing Cooter and Jesse, they sounded far away too. Then, there were tons of faces everywhere. Hundreds of voices, slipping in and out. He wanted to go to sleep, but the people kept him awake. He didn't understand why.
He remembered moving. He'd been moved sideways, and excruciating pain shot through his torso, all originating from that one spot on his back. He was laying down still, but he wasn't on the floor anymore. The pain was starting to go down a little, but he was continuously being moved again and again, the pain spread like wildfire. He didn't remember anything after that, only that he'd been hurting… a lot.
First, he noticed it was gone. No more pain. Then, he felt a hand on his arm. It was rough, callused, evidence of a hard working man. Next, it was the smell, that weird chemical smell that always came with hospitals. Finally, it was the voices. They all sounded worried. He could hear Cooter, Enos, Lulu, and Jesse.
"Where is Daisy? She shoulda been here by now." Jesse growled.
Daisy? Daisy's not here?
"I dunno Uncle Jesse, I couldn't raise her on the CB, and she weren't anywheres I looked." Cooter replied.
"Me neither." Enos said.
"Well then, why don't you check somewhere you ain't." Jesse ordered.
"Jesse, give them a break, their best friend's hurt. We're all worried sick, let them be here for Bo." Lulu argued.
Jesse sighed. "I just can't bear the thought of losin' her too."
A door opened, and the sound of footsteps echoed through the room.
"How bad is it?" Cooter asked worriedly.
The doctor glanced at Bo, lying motionless in the hospital bed. He looked to Jesse. "Your nephew's very lucky. He could've suffered extensive injuries to his spine, but his ribcage absorbed the shock. His ribs are cracked and broken, and he's got a punctured lung. His back isn't broken, but he has two disc fractures, and a displaced vertebrae, all of which are extremely painful. We have him on pain medication, he should be awake soon enough, though."
Jesse nodded. "Thank you."
"Ah, how soon is 'soon enough'?" Cooter asked.
The doctor shrugged. "I don't know, it could mean minutes, hours, or even seconds."
"Oh." Cooter looked down disappointedly.
The doctor nodded, and left.
Jesse felt a small movement under his hand. He turned his head sharply, hoping to see his nephew awake, and full of life. Bo's eyes were still closed, but his hand had clenched up into a fist.
"You know… I hate hospitals." He said. Bo opened his eyes slowly.
"Ha! You're alright!" Enos exclaimed joyously.
"Can't complain." Bo gave him a weak smile.
"Oh thank God." Lulu said.
Bo looked to his right to see the young boy sitting in a chair by the window.
Just then, Boss Hogg flew inside the door. He looked as if he'd seen a ghost.
"What's wrong J.D.?" Lulu asked.
"The Four of Spades, not only have they got Luke, but they also have Daisy and Rosco." Boss Hogg explained.
"What?" Jesse exclaimed.
"Oh no, not my baby brother!" Lulu cried.
"No, please no, not Daisy." Bo pleaded.
"I'm sorry, they… they left a note for me on my desk. Texas wants to take over Hazzard, he wants to run it, he wants to be commissioner. He… he said he'd kill Rosco if I don't do what he wants." Boss Hogg said.
Bo tried to sit up, but found it far too painful. He coughed a few times.
"I dunno what to tell ya, none of us wanna see Rosco dead, but we don't wanna lose our home neither." Cooter said.
"We gotta think of somethin'." Lulu fretted.
"Hey, they might think they have the upper hand here, but remember y'all are locals, you know this place better than they do. They might kill the sheriff, but not if we find them first." The boy explained.
"Georgie's got a point there, if we find the Spades, and bust 'em before they can make a move, we'll be in the clear." Cooter added.
"Then we'd better start straight away, we don't know how much time we might have." Enos remarked.
"Good idea."
