Chapter 21: Eggs Hatch

"So, what Pokémon do you think your egg will be?" May asked.

May and Drew are in theater class with their eggs of course on some random day in December.

"I don't know." Drew said. "The colors on the egg are always the colors of the Pokémon, so…" his voice trailed off. His Pokémon egg is red-brown on the upper half and it has red-brown swirls that look like ocean waves towards the bottom.

"Your Pokémon will definitely be brown." May said.

"No duh." Drew said.

May's eyebrows furrowed. "Hey! I'm just trying to think of what it could be!"

"How's that working out for you?"

"Urgh! You are so...annoying!" May yelled.

"Shh...you don't want the Pokémon to hear you scream." Drew said.

"Did you hear what I said?!" May whisper yelled at Drew.

"All I heard was that I'm so charming and I'm so talented in everything." Drew said, smirking.

"What? I didn't say that!" May/Daisy yelled.

"Oh. Well then, no, I didn't hear what you said." Drew said. "Could you repeat?"

"You are so…!"

"So...what?" Drew questioned.

"Annoy-!"

May was cut off when she saw Drew's egg light up and then fade. Drew looked at his egg and it did it again.

May gasped. "I think it's ready to hatch!"

Drew rolled his eyes. "No duh." He opened the case and put it on the floor. He took out the pillow and egg and placed them on his lap. It started blinking again.

Everyone in class saw the light and they all gathered around Drew and May, staring at the glowing egg.

"Wow, people really go nuts for this." May said.

"Yeah. Look, it's happening now." Drew said. The egg glowed white without fading.

Everyone saw the egg transform into a Pokémon. The Pokémon was sleeping on Drew's lap. Everyone gasped.

"It's so cute!" May exclaimed.

"Sure is." Drew agreed.

The Pokémon started waking up. It stood up and looked at Drew and then at everyone else.

"Vul~!" The Pokémon said happily to everyone.

The girls in the class went crazy for the adorable Pokémon.

"So, you got a Vulpix." May said.

"Yep." Drew said. "And...could everyone please go back to their seats now? Show's over."

Everyone went back to their seats.

Vulpix faced Drew. He nuzzled his head into Drew's chest.

"Aww...it's so cute!" May exclaimed.

Drew pet his newly hatched Vulpix. (This Vulpix isn't the Alolan one in case you guys were wondering.)

"Nice to meet you Vulpix, I'm Drew."

"Vul~!" Vulpix said happily.

May giggled. She looked down at her own egg. "I wonder when mine will hatch."

"What Pokémon do you know is white, purple, and blue?" Drew asked.

"Umm...hmmmm…" May said, thinking. "I have no idea."

"Yeah. Me neither." Drew said.

"I just hope it hatches soon."

"Vulpix, ready to be caught?" Drew asked.

"Vul~!" Vulpix said happily.

Drew took out a Pokéball and enlarged it. Vulpix hit his head on the Pokéball, clicking the button. The ball opened and Vulpix disappeared into a red light and into the Pokéball.

"Wow, that was easy." May said.

"Yeah. I guess he really likes me." Drew said. The Pokéball made the sound that shows that it's been caught.

It's another random day in December with the gang during lunch. All of their eggs have hatched in the past few days except May's.

"All of your eggs have hatched?" May questioned.

"Yep! Isn't my Igglybuff so cute?!" Dawn exclaimed.

Ash got an Elekid, Paul got a Growlithe, Gary got a Pichu, Misty got an Eevee, Dawn got an Igglybuff, and Drew got a Vulpix.

May sighed. "Sure is."

"Don't worry Daisy. I'm sure your egg will hatch soon." Misty said.

"I hope so…" May said.

"Maybe you haven't been a great eggsitter, so the process slowed down." Drew said.

"Hey!" May yelled. "I've been an amazing eggsitter. Maybe my Pokémon just doesn't want to steal the spotlight of yours before yours even hatched!"

At that moment, May's egg started blinking white.

Dawn gasped. "Daisy, it's time!"

"Well, let's see who you are." May said to the egg as she opened the case and took it out with its pillow.

It started glowing white without blinking. The gang all watched as it transformed into a Pokémon. The Pokémon was sleeping on the pillow on the table.

Dawn gasped. "It's so cute! What is it?"

"It's...a Galarian Ponyta." Gary breathed.

"Those are extremely hard to come by." Paul said.

The Ponyta started waking up. She stood up and looked at May.

"Hi there…" May greeted.

The Ponyta neighed sadly and slowly walked backwards. She bumped into Ash. She suddenly turned around.

"Hi Ponyta." Ash greeted.

Ponyta neighed sadly again and she walked backwards again, bumping into Dawn.

"Hi!" Dawn said happily.

Ponyta neighed again. May watched Ponyta look around at the gang frantically. Ponyta was scared. May could see this.

"Ponyta...is everything okay?" May asked worriedly.

Ponyta neighed again as if screaming and she jumped off of the table and started running out of the cafeteria. Everyone else in the cafeteria looked at where the loud sound came from.

"Ponyta, wait!" May called.

"Oh no...did we scare it?" Dawn asked.

"No...Ponyta just is shy and maybe scared around humans." May/Daisy said. "I'm going to go after her." She said as she grabbed her backpack.

"We'll come too." Dawn said.

"No. I need to do this on my own." May said and then she ran out of the cafeteria.

"Should we help her?" Misty asked.

"She said she needs to do it alone." Drew said.

"But-!" Dawn said.

"No buts. Let's let her calm her Pokémon down." Drew said.

"Ponyta!" May called. She is outside of the school because she saw Ponyta run in that direction. Someone must've opened the door and she ran out.

May looked around the front of the school. Her view went to the school gates, the entrance onto campus. She saw Ponyta running in that direction, heading towards the school gate.

May began running towards the gate as well. "Ponyta!"

Ponyta heard the voice calling for her, but she ignored it. She continued running.

"Ponyta, stop!" May called.

Ponyta ran in the middle of the street and a car was coming from the right. Ponyta heard the car's horn honk and she stopped in her tracks, right in the middle of the street. She looked at the car coming at her. It was like she couldn't move. She was too terrified to move.

May immediately took off her wig and ran in the middle of the street. She held her hand up towards the car, palm facing the car. The driver immediately stopped the car in front of Ponyta.

"P-princess." The driver said.

May put her hand down and looked down at Ponyta. "Ponyta, it's me, Princess May."

Ponyta looked up at May's eyes.

"If it's alright with you, I'd really like to become great friends with you." May said. "Remember? You called my name when I was looking at the eggs."

Ponyta still stared up at May. She slowly started walking towards her. She followed May out of the street. The car continued driving again.

May put on her wig. She bent down to Ponyta's level. "Listen. In school, I'm disguised as Daisy because the Princess will bring too much unwanted attention to herself. So you don't have to be afraid of me or my friends. Okay?"

After a moment, Ponyta walked closer to May and nuzzled her head into May's knees. May smiled and pet her newly hatched Ponyta.

"Now, let's head back to the school." May said as she took out a Pokéball.

Ponyta stepped back and neighed happily. May tapped the Pokéball on Ponyta's head and she disappeared into the ball. The Pokéball clicked almost instantly. May stood up and walked back to the school.

When the gang saw Ponyta and greeted it again, it hid itself behind May. Seems like it's still scared to be around other people. May would just giggle when Ponyta hides from the gang. Even to this day, the Friday before Winter Break, Ponyta would hide behind May when her friends would approach her. Now it's time for the evaluation from the teacher to see how well the newly hatched Pokémon are doing. Everyone has their new Pokémon on their desks and are ready for the teacher to have a look at their Pokémon.

"Okay class, I'll start walking around the class to evaluate your Pokémon." Teacher Suzie said.

Ponyta looks around the classroom frantically while standing on May's desk. She looks at the Pokémon and their trainers.

"Ponyta, it'll be okay." May/Daisy said. Ponyta turned around to face May. "No one will hurt you. Everyone at school is nice."

"Yeah. And everyone is super caring." Misty said.

Ponyta faced the voice of May's friend and she neighed sadly, backing up a little.

"Aww...you still don't like people that aren't Daisy…" Misty said.

"How will that work with the teacher?" Ash asked.

Ponyta looked down sadly. "It'll be fine." May said. "Suzie will understand the situation and find a way to evaluate without touching."

"If you say so…" Misty said.

"Ooh. You have a Galarian Ponyta." Suzie said once she stood next to May's desk.

Ponyta turned around and backed up a little.

"Yes ma'am." May/Daisy said. "But my Ponyta won't really like the check up…"

"How so?"

"She's scared of people. Anyone but me." May answered.

"I see…" Suzie said. "Well, no matter. I can still evaluate Ponyta without moving closer to it." She handed May a bowl of Pokémon food. "Let's see how her diet is."

"Okay." May said. She placed the bowl in front of Ponyta. "Hungry? Go ahead and eat up."

Ponyta hesitated, before slowly bending her neck down and eating the food. Suzie was writing something on her clipboard. After a few minutes, Ponyta finished eating.

"She has a good diet." Suzie said. Suzie started walking around May's desk, Ponyta eyeing her every move. "I'm impressed. You two haven't been together long, but her fur is in really good health."

"Thank you. She really likes to be brushed." May said.

"Well, that's all I need to evaluate. Your Ponyta is in good health and you've been raising it well. You get a 100 for this project grade." Suzie added as she wrote May's grade on the clipboard. After that, she walked to another desk.

"Good job Ponyta." May said. "You were great when the teacher walked up to us."

Ponyta neighed happily.

"Okay then, come on out Ponyta." May said. The Pokéball opened in her hand and the Unique Horn Pokémon materialized on the ground.

Ponyta saw a bunch of Pokémon staring at her and she hid behind May's leg.

"Aww...she's shy around Pokémon too." Dahlia said.

"Yeah…" May said. She bent down to Ponyta. "Ponyta, you're going to become great friends with my Pokémon. I've brought you to the castle, see?"

Ponyta turned around and saw the giant castle. She faced May again.

"We have these large fields of flowers and grass where you can play with the other Pokémon." May said. "And over there," she pointed. "Is a greenhouse where you can sleep. I have people setting up a bed for you as we speak." May put her hand down and looked at Ponyta. "I'll be sure to visit you every day like I do with the rest of my Pokémon. And every now and then, I might decide to take you to school."

Ponyta neighed in agreement.

"Take your time getting used to people and Pokémon. There's no rush." May said. She stood up. "I know that you'll love it here. Go and have some fun."

May started walking to the castle with Dahlia. Ponyta looked at May's Pokémon. After a moment, Ponyta turned around and ran to May, stopping them from walking. May's Pokémon started playing with each other.

"Ponyta, what's wrong?" May asked.

Ponyta nuzzled her head against May's leg.

"Looks to me that she doesn't want you to leave." Dahlia said.

"But Ponyta…" May said. Ponyta looked up at May. May sighed. "Alright then. You can sleep in my room."

Ponyta neighed happily.

"For now." May added. "Once you get used to people and Pokémon, you'll start sleeping in that greenhouse."
