Bucky sat outside the red brick building palming the pamphlet in his hands. The pamphlet in question was a gift from Tanner last week for his birthday. He had laughed at it and made a joke about his age but stopped when he noticed the serious expression on his son's face.
-Flashback-
"I know I'm 103 today but I'm really only in my 30s bud! I don't need to go to a retirement home!"
"It's not for you to live there dad." Bucky looked at Tanner confused.
"What do you mean bud?"
"I wrote a name on the inside. I found someone who lives there." Bucky opened the little booklet and found the name written in the top corner. Rebeccah Foster. He stared at the name trying to wrack his brain for a face to go with it.
"I don't remember a Foster." Tanner smirked.
"That's her married name dad! She was born Rebeccah Jane Barnes." Bucky heard Nik gasp beside him. He looked down at the name again.
"You found Becky? How?"
"Well FRIDAY helped a lot but I found everyone."
"Everyone?" Tanner nodded. "But Becky…"
"She's the only one alive. She's living there." He pointed to the pamphlet. "You don't have to go see her or anything. She knows nothing."
-End Flashback-
So here he sat, in the parking lot a week later. Nik talked him into being here today. She even offered to go with him. But he knew he needed to see his sister. He knew he needed to see her alone. He would regret it if he missed his chance. She was about 90 now. Would she even remember him? Would she want to know his story? They buried him a long time ago after all. He pulled the wallet out of his pocket and pulled out the pictures. One of each of his kids. One of him and Nik. And one old one of him with his parents, sisters, and a tiny Steve. He laughed at that one. He put the pictures away and then put the wallet back in his back pocket. He took a deep breath and pushed himself off the bike as he exhaled. He walked across the parking lot and through the front door before he could stop himself. The receptionist, a young man, smiled up at him.
"How can I help you sir?"
"I'm here to see someone who stays here. Rebeccah Foster?" The young man, name tag dubbed him Matt, clicked away at his computer.
"ID?" Bucky pulled that out of his wallet and handed it over. "Barnes? Any relation here?"
"Yes sir. But you wouldn't believe me if I told you."
"Alright. Just give me a second." He picked up the phone and dialed a number. The call was quick. And before Bucky knew it, he was given her room number and sent down the halls. He was trying hard not to wring his hands but he knew everyone could hear his arm whirring every time it swwung. Stress seemed to make the mechanics louder for some reason. He stopped at her open door and stared at the little old lady sitting at her table, looking out the window. He lifted his hand and knocked before he could stop himself and stopped breathing when she turned to look at him. The smile that broke out across her face was as beautiful as he remembered.
"Jamie!" She lifted her arms to him and he all but ran forward and dropped to his knees in front of her. Her tiny arms wrapped around his neck while his wrapped around her waist. They sat there for a few minutes before he looked up at her. "Where have you been Jamie?"
"It's a long story Becky. It has a happy ending though!"
"Oh yeah? Do tell! But start off with how you look so young! I'm an old lady but you're still a young man!"
"Trust me, some days I feel every one of my 103 years." He sat in the chair across from her and started his story at the beginning, when he shipped out. He showed her his pictures and his arm when she asked. He laughed when she ooh'd and awed over his and Tanner's matching arms. She gushed over his kids and his wife.
"I can't believe you managed to trick her into marrying you!"
"Honestly I can't either most days. She's the best thing that's ever happened to me. Her and the kids. Tanner helped patch me up when we met." She told him about her husband and 4 children, 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandkids with 3 on the way, and 2 great great grandchildren. Of course, she had pictures. She had 3 daughters and a son who she named James after her favorite brother. They didn't know how long they'd been talking before someone was knocking on the door telling them that visiting hours were ending soon.
"Alright Jamie, you listen to me. I meet with my entire family the second Friday of every month at the park down the street. You have an open invitation. You and your family. Do you hear me?"
"Yes ma'am." Bucky smiled. He left with a large smile on his face and it didn't leave when he rode home. He walked into the compound and up to his rooms to see his family sitting down to pizza. He kissed his kids and his wife and sat down to eat with them. He told them about the family day at the park and they were all excited! They couldn't wait! He couldn't believe that his family had just gotten so big! When did he get so lucky?
Before Bucky knew it, it was the second Friday of the month and he and his family were piling into an unmarked SHIELD van with Natasha. Steve was following behind on his motorcycle. Bucky had insisted these two come saying that they were family to him. Steve especially as Becky would enjoy seeing him too. Nik had stifled a giggle that morning while watching Bucky get dressed. He was so nervous he had actually managed to rip his shirt in half! Tanner had insisted on a hair cut and outfit to match his dad. So both of them were sporting a fresh haircut, green flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up, blue jeans, and combat boots. Emi chose her Snow White dress and red cowgirl boots. The twins were sporting rompers, converse, and sweaters. Of course they're diaper bags also had extra outfits. Nik reminded Bucky about 3 times on the drive not to grip the steering wheel to tightly as he was slowly denting it. When they got to the park, he spotted his sister sitting at one of the benches surrounded by what looked like her children and their spouses.
"Nervous?" Nik asked him. He huffed out a breath.
"Slightly."
"That's okay! This is big. You're not just meeting your sister again. You're meeting her family too. Your family. I'm nervous too." He looked over at her.
"Why?"
"What if your sister doesn't like me? She's your sister! Her opinion matters!" They both heard Natasha unbuckling car seats, pretending not to be listening in on their conversation. Bucky reached over and grabbed Nik's hand.
"She's going to love you." She looked up at him. "Because I love you." They both smiled.
"I love you too. Now lets get over there before you turn the van around!" He chuckled and got out. Nik and Bucky walked hand-in-hand, each holding a baby while Natasha held Emi's hand. Tanner walked beside his dad and Steve brought up the rear, carrying the diaper bags. Becky saw them and practically started jumping up and down like a little girl!
"Jamie! You're here! I was beginning to think you weren't coming!" He hugged his sister and laughed. She was practically buzzing.
"I wouldn't have missed this. I did bring back up though." He gestured around him to Steve and, again, Becky broke out into a huge smile.
"Steven Grant Rogers? Is that really you?!"
"The one and only!" Steve gave her a big hug, mindful of the fact that she was a tiny woman in her 90s and he was Captain America. She squeezed him and then turned to Nik.
"You must be Nik! You're more beautiful than your picture!" She threw her arms around Nik. "Thank you for saving my brother. And for loving him."
"The pleasure is all mine! He's one of the good things in my life." Nik smiled. Becky turned to Tanner and Emi then.
"And hello you two. I'm your Aunt Becky! I'm your dad's sister. That's probably weird huh?"
"Not at all!" Tanner spoke. Emi was doing her best to hide behind her brother's leg. "I actually found you. Gave dad a pamphlet with your name in it for his birthday."
"You did?! Well thank you so much! Thank you for giving me back my big brother!" After being introduced to Natasha, Becky introduced her brother and his family to her children. Bucky smiled when she pulled a man towards her. "Jamie, this is your nephew, James! James, this is your uncle Jamie!"
"Hi. I've heard so much about you!" James shook Bucky's hand vigorously. "I've literally grown up hearing stories about you and pretended I was you. And now I get to actually meet you? Wow Uncle James!"
"It's good to meet you James. And, please, call me Bucky."
"Uncle Bucky?"
"That works for me!" Bucky chuckled. The entire day was a whirlwind of introductions and conversation. Emi stuck close to her dad and Aunt Natasha most of the day. Tanner played with his cousins and answered all kinds of questions about his arm.
"Papa, kogda my mozhem poyti domoy?" (Dad, when can we go home?) Emi whispered while sitting on her dad's lap.
"Skoro. Ty v poryadke?" (Soon. Are you okay?) Bucky whispered back. Emi just shrugged. Bucky looked over at Nik who was talking to one of his nieces, Jenny. He scanned the park and spotted his son chasing a couple of boys. Wait a second… those boys had his son's arm! In a blink, he placed Emi on the bench and was on his feet walking swiftly towards the boys running and laughing away from his son while holding his arm. Tossing it between them.
"Give it back!" Tanner yelled.
"No way cyborg!" They tossed it again and then stopped on a dime when a larger metal arm caught the smaller one mid-air.
"I do believe you were asked to give this back. Why'd you take it anyway?" Bucky growled.
"We were just playing!"
"Playing with a boy's arm? Not good enough." Bucky tossed the arm to Tanner who caught it easily and strapped it back in place. "Lets go Tanner. It's getting late."
"Yes sir." Without another word, he walked passed his dad toward his mom who had stopped half way between them and where she had been sitting when she saw Bucky get up.
"One freak taking orders from another. I can't believe we're related to them." One of the boys murmured. Thanks to Bucky's advanced hearing, he heard every word. He turned back to the boys.
"Being an assassin the last 70 years has made me very protective of my family. Don't mess with my son again." Bucky turned away from them and gathered his family together. He kissed his sister on the cheek and claimed the younger kids were getting tired so they needed to get home. "Thank you for inviting us Becky. It was absolutely amazing meeting everyone!"
"Thank you for coming out Jamie. I love your wife and kids! Baby James looks just like you! You're so different than you were when we were kids Jamie. More mature but just as youthful as ever!" Bucky smiled at his sister.
"It's all thanks to Nik and the kids." He glanced over at Nik and smiled at her.
"See you next month?" Becky asked her big brother.
"I'll visit you as often as I can. I don't want to miss more time with you that I already have." She pat his hand the way old women do.
"I look forward to all your visits then. Tanner and Emi, come here." The kids trot over.
"Yes Aunt Becky?" Tanner asked with a smile.
"Tanner, thank you for reuniting me with your dad. It means so much to me. You continue being the amazing young man I know you are. And you let me know if you need anything from me, okay? Both of you!"
"Okay!" They both chimed.
"Now give me a kiss before you leave." Tanner kissed her left cheek while Emi kissed the right. They didn't see Natasha snap a picture. She had captured a lot of pictures like that throughout the day. She knew how important memories were to Bucky and she wanted to preserve every one that she could for him. When everyone had said their goodbyes, the family piled into the van (or swung onto his bike), and headed back to the compound. Nik smiled back at the kids, three of which were fast asleep in the back seat. Bucky was sure to make trips to see his sister as often as he could. He brought the kids and Nik and sometimes Steve. There would never be a birthday gift that would ever top this.
