Frodo looked away absentmindedly. He knew what was on his mind and he would surely take a guess what was on Lucy's mind. It was only a question of whether one of them would let their guard down.

Frodo felt sure this was the right path. He just didn't count on the horrid expression on Lucy's face, nor the horrified expression on his own face, one where his eyes were red from bawling his eyes out.

Lucy looked at him now in interest, saying to him, "Are you all right? What happened?"

Frodo looked down at the floor again, gulping as he took in his surroundings. He didn't want to disappoint her, but he felt sure he would if he ever shooed her away again. "I'm sorry." He looked up at her now, keen on speaking to her. He kept his arms folded against his knees, contemplating his future.

"Lucy," Frodo looked at her now, eager to get the words out of his mouth, "I'm sorry I shooed you. The darkness, the Dark Night of the Soul, crept on me." He stared at her intensely, tears threatening to leave his eyes. "The darkness came to me. There was nothing I could do."

He gulped, doing his best to get the words, "I didn't know what else to do." He closed his eyes, bawling his eyes out. "I'm sorry. There was nothing I could do. I'm lost, Lucy. I'm lost."

He didn't expect Lucy to dive in to hug him. That was the last thing he expected from her. Still, he held onto her, unsure what else he could say or do. It was hopeless. What more could he do?

Nothing. He simply let the tears fall. He held Lucy's arm, not letting her go.

Frodo caught the gaze of Sauron, who looked at him intensely. The very sight of him was hard to witness. Frodo didn't want to face him. He couldn't see any other way out of this mess.

If Frodo dared to go down the lonely path, without Lucy, he feared he might lose her again and himself. There was nothing he could do, but contemplate on why he was taking this path to begin with.

"I'll protect you. That's a promise," Lucy said.

Frodo shook his head. He knew now what he had to do. "No." He looked up at her now in interest, telling her, "I have to face this darkness alone. We all do. I know what I have to do." He turned towards their bedroom, telling her, "This I must face on my own. If I stayed with you, then how could I complete my task?" He shrugged, "You know what I mean?"

Lucy nodded. "I know what you mean."

Frodo turned towards their bedroom door. The fog and the darkness still didn't leave their bedroom. Yes, it was time. Time to face this darkness alone.

.

Frodo moved towards his bed. So far, nothing happened. Then the door closed and the darkness consumed him. With fierceness, the darkness blasted itself against Frodo, forcing him onto his bed. Frodo clambered up on his bed, cowering. He curled up into a ball, thinking off all the times he had been with Lucy, and her bravery she showed towards him.

It was the last thing he expected to find in the darkness, but it was one he knew he had to face. He shivered, doing his best to keep the darkness at bay. It wouldn't leave. It wouldn't abate.

Surely, there was something he could do!

Then it dawned on him. He was alone. And yet, he had been alone before. The darkness and the silence were his friends. Yes, he felt better. The darkness stopped beating him. The tears calmed down. His mind relaxed. He chuckled, gracious to see Sauron and the One Ring, as well as the spiders. They were welcoming him home.

Sauron nodded, extending his hand to the fearful hobbit, no longer afraid of his own shadow, but still trembling with fear of what he was about to do.

"Stand up, and embrace the darkness," Sauron said with confidence, hopeful Frodo would take his hand.

Frodo did, at which the Dark Lord reveled. The Dark Lord laughed, a sinister laugh, but one that gave Frodo hope. Frodo turned now to his Dark Lord self, who bowed to him with great joy.

Frodo didn't have to be afraid anymore. He loved it! He loved his darkness as well as his light, for they both resided in him. Frodo smiled, even as the darkness faded and the images faded. Frodo looked back at the bedroom door, as it opened to reveal Lucy coming into his bedroom. Their bedroom, for the first time, since they met in Bag End's hallway.

Frodo smiled, nodding to her, and wiping the tears from his eyes. He hadn't known or realized how long he had been crying. It was the first time in a long time that he cried for so long. It was worth it.

"Do you feel better?" Lucy asked. She joined him on the bed, cuddling up next to him.

Frodo smirked, saying to her, "I believe I do."
