Chapter 9 Interrogating Madelyn
Prentiss kept an eye on Madelyn while she sat on the bench. Madelyn watched the agents around her. The entire time she maintained a calm composure.
Morgan lightly stepped over to the table and leaned down to look at the bag.
The bag appeared to be almost empty. All the pockets were open.
"What did you leave in here?" Morgan asked.
"A present," Madelyn answered with a smile.
"A present," Prentiss said.
"Not for you!" Madelyn said to Prentiss. "The present is for Spencer."
"Can we know what it is?" Morgan asked.
"No, you don't open someone else's present." Madelyn said to Morgan with a smile.
Morgan carefully tried to see what was inside the bag.
"You can't open it," Madelyn said. "It needs to be Spencer."
"Spencer isn't here," Prentiss said.
"Yes, he is," Madelyn said to Prentiss "He is close. I know he is."
Madelyn looked towards the bag. "I grabbed it when he threw it away, it still smelled like him. He smells like a library, I think. I know he likes books."
Reid remained out of sight.
He was waiting on Hotch and Rossi to arrive.
They were also waiting for a bomb sniffing dog to smell the bag. It was not decided yet what her plan was and what was in the bag.
Meanwhile the rest of the Agents had fanned out looking for Henry. It was most likely that he would be close.
Prentiss looked Madelyn. "This is about Henry; this isn't about Spencer."
"Did you know that men that have a good relationship with their mother prove to be better mates." Madelyn said. "Its been proven that the so-called 'mama boys' are more attentive to their wives and girlfriends."
Morgan was watching Madelyn's body language. She was too calm. If there was anything dangerous in the bag, she would have shown more signs of distress.
"Reid is a Federal Agent he isn't a 'mama boy'," Prentiss counted.
"Did you know that Spencer writes a letter to his mother every single day. He drops the letters in the box so carefully."
Morgan looked at Madelyn.
"How do know about that?" Morgan asked.
"I looked over his shoulder one day when he was having coffee. I figured it out." Madelyn said with a coy smile. "He didn't know I was there. I was as quiet as a mouse."
"When was this?"
"A while ago." Madelyn said. "I want to talk with Spencer."
"You don't get to talk with Spencer, you lost your shot with him the moment you started stalking him." Prentiss said.
"I only wanted to get close to him," Madelyn said. "I had to see what he wanted."
"You got close," Morgan said. "Do you know how much you hurt him and Henry."
"Do you have any idea how much trouble you are in right now." Prentiss said.
"I haven't hurt anyone," Madelyn declared.
"You kidnapped a child," Morgan said. "Henry's scared wanting his mother and father."
"I didn't hurt him at all," Madelyn. "He's perfectly safe."
Madelyn raised her voice and shouted out loud to the park. "Spencer, tell them I would never hurt a child, especially one close to you. I did not hurt Mattie, did I?"
"You know how scared that kid was when we found him?" Morgan said.
"I only talked to him; I didn't touch him."
"Why don't you tell us where Henry is?" Prentiss asked.
"Why don't you tell me where Spencer is?" Madelyn said.
Madelyn was playing with them. She was not worried.
Prentiss and Morgan exchanged a look. There was not anything dangerous in the bag.
If there was, Madelyn would have had a stronger reaction, being that close to the bag.
Reid resisted the urge to come around and confront Madelyn. He wanted Henry back.
He looked up and saw Hotch and Rossi coming towards them along with the bomb sniffing dog.
Rossi stayed with Reid, Hotch and the dog's handler went over to the tables.
Morgan, Prentiss, and Hotch watched the dog sniff the bag and ignored it. That gave them the okay that they could open the bag.
Madelyn watched, not saying a word.
"Open it up." Hotch said to Morgan.
Morgan picked up the bag and placed it on the table.
"I told you that belongs to Spencer." Madelyn shouted getting up from the bench.
Hotch and Prentiss both grabbed a hold of her and maneuvered her back onto the bench.
"You don't move," Hotch nearly growled at Madelyn. It was a tone that he only used in certain occasions. It was usually used to make suspects feel small and insignificant.
Morgan opened the bag and pulled out a digital camera. He turned the camera on and scrolled through the pictures on camera.
"They are pictures of Henry," Morgan said. "They start with him in the park today."
Hotch moved to the beginning and looked at the pictures from the start.
There were shots of Reid and the rest of the team sitting at the deli. A few showed Reid dropping letters into mailboxes. There was one with a picture of Rossi and Reid at a coffee shop, it was dated the day before.
Then Hotch got to the pictures from that day.
There were pictures of Henry at the park playing on the equipment. Hotch continued looking at the pictures. There were far away shots of the team coming out of Sophia's apartment. The next picture was Henry. But he had his hair combed back with a purple ribbon and was wearing a pink jacket. He did look like a girl in the picture. There was nothing in the background that said where Henry was.
"This is more than enough proof of you kidnapping Henry," Hotch said. "The best thing that you can do right now is tell us where Henry is and hope that he is not harmed."
"I won't say anything else," Madelyn said. "Except to Spencer."
Hotch stepped away and went over to Rossi and Reid.
Rossi was clearly blocking Reid from going to Madelyn.
"Reid, listen to me," Hotch said.
Reid shook his head. "Let me talk with her. She wants me."
"We are going to find Henry," Rossi said. "We will wear her down."
"That will take time," Reid said. "Henry doesn't have that. It will be faster if I talk with her."
"We can't have you do that. You are emotionally involved." Hotch said.
"I have a clear head." Reid said. "I will keep it for Henry."
Reid walked around and looked at Madelyn.
Madelyn shot up when Reid came into sight. "I knew you were near."
"This game needs to end; we are both tired. It's time we got to know each other," Reid said taking a seat next to Madelyn. "Please tell me where Henry is. We can get him back to his parents then we can sit and talk, maybe play poker over coffee."
The team was watching the interaction between the two. Reid was calm and Madelyn was playing into it.
"Alright." Madelyn said. "Here are my conditions. Spencer will leave his badge, gun, and cell phone. There will be nothing that will trace us. We will leave in a car that I have selected. When I know we are not followed I will take Spencer to Henry. Henry will be fine if you agree."
Everyone on the team at that moment thought of one thing, Frank Breitkopf and Gideon.
This was the same type of deal.
"I accept," Reid said.
