*hides from irritated readers*
Yeah... Hi? I'm back. Finally. Yes, it's been a few months of hectic life and school (well, basically just school!) and I'm so sorry for not updating this story. I haven't forgotten y'all nor have I abandoned this story! You guys mean to much to me for that xD
Anyway, this is a very short oneshot while I struggle with writer's block and the other half of the previous short story. It's inspired by the end of HTTYD 3 and the fact that I can't watch the aforementioned ending without crying. Like I said, you haven't been forgotten!
NadderoftheStars: Once again, your reviews made me laugh! They will have some school interaction in the second half of my modern AU fic
Rexsoka66: Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! Judging by your username, I assume you enjoy Star Wars: The Clone Wars? I adore that show by the way! I love the idea, and intend to write it imminently - I agree, you can never have too many of that sort of fic!
Disclaimer:
I can't be bothered to think of a vaguely clever disclaimer for this. If you haven't figured out by now that I don't own HTTYD, I don't own HTTYD.
"Hiccup?"
Astrid sat up and looked around blearily. Where was her boyfriend- No, she corrected herself, Where was her husband?
A soft noise downstairs prompted her to get up, shivering in her thin nightgown. Astrid tiptoed down the staircase, feeling the rough wood under her bare feet. A hunched figure sat next to the fireplace, sobs shaking his body.
"Hiccup…" she murmured and ran over to him and hugged him.
After a moment or two, he spoke.
"He should have been here."
She knew what he meant.
"Oh, Hiccup, I know. But Toothless had to go. Stormfly-" her voice trembled as she thought back to the moment, "-had to go. I miss her so much, but they had to, we both know that. And he's happy with the Lightfury. It's what he needed."
The two adults held each other, tears mingling on their faces as the sun began to rise over the sea.
Astrid remembered how her dragon, her best friend, had disappeared into the sunset without a backward glance.
How she had cried herself to sleep for days.
How the whole village was plunged into mourning.
Hiccup remembered how he had turned, asking for confirmation before leading the dragons away with the Lightfury beside him.
How he had tried to smile, yet only cried.
How he'd acted cheerful yet mourned in private.
Eventually, the sun rose and Astrid kissed Hiccup on the cheek.
"Come on," she said softly, and he finally smiled, mock bowing.
"Yes, milady."
And they headed into the kitchen to make breakfast. Soon after, the small house was filled with laughter and the smell of burning toast. Their hearts wouldn't heal overnight. Their hearts would always have the gap which their dragons had left. But they had each other.

Yeah... That was very short. But hey, at least I'm back in the fandom! Review, favourite, follow, whatever. Thanks for reading!
