So
Here's my entry for the November Monthly Competition on FallenClan (a forum owned by Succulentsofa)
Warning, if you don't like death or reading stuff that will make you cry, don't read this. (I shed a few tears myself while writing this, if I'm being honest.)
Uh…
Enjoy :)
MISS YOU
Wavedusk stood in camp next to his best friend, Scorchshine. The red-furred tom looked excited and determined, while Wavedusk looked serious and battle-ready, even if he felt the same way as his friend. This was their first battle as Warriors and Wavedusk intended to leave a mark on Clan history, as he'd done so before.
Wavedusk was the perfect Warrior of ShadowClan, having defeated a fox all by himself when he was just a young Apprentice with very little battle training. After that he'd continued to prove himself again and again to the Clan, saving a litter of kits from drowning in the lake and fighting off an attack from the RiverClan Apprentices. Only StarClan knew what that bunch of rowdy, impulsive youngsters were doing trying to raid another Clan all by themselves. The nerve of some cats…
Wavedusk sighed. To be honest, he was nervous about the upcoming fight. At least Scorchshine was there, he made everything better. Wavedusk took a deep breath as the leader of ShadowClan, Amberstar, padded to the front of the Clan and called the battle patrol together.
"I expect you all to fight your hardest, not just for your own lives, but for the lives of your Clanmates too." She said firmly, gazing out across the gathered group of Warriors and Apprentices. Wavedusk shifted closer to Scorchshine, giving him the "I'm scared" look. Scorchshine gave him a reassuring smile and mouthed, "everything will be fine". Wavedusk gave him a grateful glance and returned his gaze back to Amberstar.
"Are you ready?" Amberstar shouted.
A cluster of loud yes' and yeah's sounded from the crowd, the loudest coming from Scorchshine. StarClan, how is he so enthusiastic all the time?
Scorchshine seemed to read Wavedusk's mind and shifted closer to whisper, "Confidence is contagious. If you act confident, others will too. Then we'll have a better chance at winning."
Wavedusk nodded, that's smart. "He responded quietly and Scorchshine nodded with a smile. "Now who told you that piece of information?"
Scorchshine let out a quiet mock gasp. "Excuse me?" He said dramatically. "Nobody told me! I just...knew it…"
"Yeah right," Wavedusk said sarcastically, though he was grinning at the other tom's antics. "Who told you?"
"Firepatch," Scorchshine mumbled. Firepatch was the ShadowClan medicine cat, and most likely the wisest cat in all the Clans.
"I knew it," Wavedusk smirked, but jumped when he heard Amberstar clearing her throat.
"Are you two done?" She asked. "Because we can totally wait five hundred years to attack WindClan. Don't worry, they'll only steal our entire territory by then."
Wavedusk opened his mouth to apologize when Scorchshine interrupted him. "I'm deeply sorry, your highness." He said and bowed dramatically. Amberstar rolled her eyes.
"Anyways, let's go." She said and gestured towards the camp exit. "Be silent, until I give the word."
Wavedusk, and all the other cats going to fight, nodded and headed out of camp, all trying to keep their paw steps quieter than mice. Wavedusk padded silently next to Scorchshine, who had a small smirk on his face. The silver tom narrowed his eyes as a bush rustled when they passed. He saw that it was just a mouse and turned his attention back to Amberstar, who was leading the group up ahead.
After what seemed like an hour of walking, the battle patrol finally reached the WindClan border and crossed it without hesitation. Wavedusk held his breath as they entered unknown territory, half expecting a patrol to ambush them. But the air was silent and calm.
Suddenly, Amberstar came to a halt, and so did the patrol. Wavedusk hesitantly lifted his head and looked at what was in front of them, his heart stopping for a moment when he saw it was the WindClan camp. Wavedusk ducked his head again and crouched low to the ground beside Scorchshine.
"We're here," he whispered.
"I noticed," Scorchshine nodded quietly. "This sure is exciting! Right, Wavedusk?"
The silver tom smiled and nodded a little. "Sure is," he said.
"SHADOWCLAN! ATTACK!" Amberstar suddenly shouted and Wavedusk leapt to his feet, racing alongside Scorchshine into the WindClan camp. The two toms quickly started to fight the she-cat that was guarding the camp. Wavedusk scratched her cheek and ducked when she tried to land a blow, letting Scorchshine scratch her up a bit.
Not long after the she-cat ran away from them and Wavedusk bounded over to a WindClan Warrior that was fighting with a ShadowClan Apprentice, immediately helping his clanmate fight off the Warrior. Wavedusk paused for a moment after fighting off a few other Warriors and Apprentices, noticing with a smile that they were winning. But...something was off, and Wavedusk frowned. Where was Scorchshine?
I swore he was at my side a moment ago...Wavedusk suddenly heard an agonized screech from somewhere outside of the WindClan camp and his eyes widened. Scorchshine...No no no no no no...please no...oh StarClan no…
Wavedusk raced out of camp, searching the territory frantically for his best friend. He ran towards the lake and let out a relieved sigh when he saw Scorchshine pinning down a WindClan Warrior.
"Thank StarClan, Scorchshine!" Wavedusk said gratefully and started to make his way towards the red tom. Then everything started to move in slow motion. Scorchshine tore his eyes away from the WindClan Warrior to smile at Wavedusk, but the silver tom didn't smile back.
Because as Scorchshine opened his mouth to greet him, the WindClan Warrior raised a paw, claws unsheathed. Wavedusk opened his mouth and began to run forward, just about to shout out and warn Scorchshine. But he was too late.
When Wavedusk was just a few feet away from them, the WindClan Warrior ripped out Scorchshine's throat and ran away as the red tom fell to the ground. Wavedusk only faintly heard Amberstar call out "Retreat!" as Scorchshine hit the ground, blood pooling around the wound in his throat.
"No…" Wavedusk whispered, feeling numb and cold as he knelt beside Scorchshine. "No...Scorchshine please...no! You can't leave me!"
"I-I'm sorry...Wavedusk…" Scorchshine said quietly, coughing up blood. "I never got the c-c-chance to t-tell you…" Scorchshine trailed off to cough weakly.
"No, don't say anything." Wavedusk said in a hushed tone, wrapping his tail around Scorchshine. "S-save your strength...I can get a medicine cat...you'll be fine…"
"Wavedusk…" Scorchshine sighed. "It's...it's no use...I'm dying, man…"
"NO!" Wavedusk shouted. "NO! NO YOU'RE NOT DYING! WE CAN GET HELP! YOU'LL BE FINE!"
Scorchshine just sighed and closed his eyes. "I...I love you, buddy." Wavedusk was unable to process the red tom's words as his flank stopped moving. Wavedusk hesitantly leaned down and pressed his ear against Scorchshine's chest, his heart sinking when he heard nothing. Wavedusk sat up, tears forming in his eyes as snow started to drift down from the clouds.
An Hour later:
Wavedusk stared blankly at his best friend's body, feeling numb and cold as the snow fell gently from the sky onto his dark silver fur. It wasn't just the cold flakes that were chilling Wavedusk, it was the pure emptiness he felt. The emptiness in his heart and the emptiness in the world. With Scorchshine dead...nothing made sense anymore.
Without him...who am I? I'm not Wavedusk. Wavedusk was the happy, laid back, funny, perfect Warrior of ShadowClan that never let ANYONE die...I let Scorchshine down...I'm the reason that he's dead...
"Wavedusk," a soft voice said from behind the silver Warrior. Wavedusk didn't move, sitting stiffly beside Scorchshine and staring at his beautiful red fur…
"Wavedusk," the voice repeated and he recognized it as his sister, Ashdawn. "I'm...I'm so sorry…"
"Don't call me Wavedusk." He growled.
"What do you mean?" Ashdawn responded, the confusion obvious in her voice.
"Don't you get it?" The silver tom spat, whirling around to face his sister. "It's my fault Scorchshine is dead! I don't deserve to have this name...it belongs to someone better. Not me." Wavedusk didn't realize there were tears in his eyes, slipping down his face and onto the frosted grass below.
"Wavedusk," Ashdawn whispered, resting her tail on his shoulders. "It's not your fault...and...and Scorchshine wouldn't have wanted you to think it is."
"Don't tell me what Scorchshine would have wanted!" Wavedusk shouted angrily. Ashdawn just stared at him.
"But you know that it's true." She said, then sighed. "I'll...leave you alone for a bit. Just don't do anything stupid."
Wavedusk watched her leave and let out a heavy sigh. He slowly turned back to Scorchshine and sat down beside his best friend, gently laying his tail across the other tom's shoulders. He sat there in silence as the sun sank beneath the trees, filling the sky with darkness.
Wavedusk looked up and saw the stars, his mouth slowly forming a small smile. Scorchshine was up there with the rest of StarClan...he knew it…
"I'm gonna miss you, old friend." Wavedusk said quietly, voice full of emotion as he started to cry again. "We...we had some good adventures together. I'm gonna miss 'em. Gosh, I'm going to miss everything about you. Your jokes, boy you could make me laugh with just a single look. And your smile...that beautiful, wonderful smile. I'm...I'm really gonna miss you." Wavedusk let out a sob and started to cry a bit harder, tears falling down his face faster than before. "I'm gonna miss you." He whispered and let out a shaky breath, staring at the sun as it sank deeper and deeper in the sky, the snow still falling. Scorchshine would have loved to see this.
I told you it would be sad.
If you didn't cry, great.
If you did cry, great and feel free to let me know in the reviews.
Anyways,
If I manage to win this I will be shooketh.
Not that winning matters very much, as I had a pretty good time writing this.
I did cover all four of the prompts, there was the first snow, a sunset, a battle, and some guilt. I just hope it was enough (crosses fingers)
I don't really have anything else to say so I'll shut up now.
