Chapter 9!
The next day Lorna woke up tired, she had the most unsettled night of sleep. Levi was still on her mind, he shouldn't have done this for her. But then again he takes orders from no one and does what he pleases most of the time, he had always been like that since she had first met him in The Underground City. She took her time getting washed and dressed, she then made her way downstairs to the Tavern's kitchen to get herself some breakfast.
When Lorna got to the kitchen everyone was already awake, they all looked tired and drained though. Last night had taken it's toll on everyone, Jacob who was normally full of energy first thing in the morning was falling asleep in his porridge. Many chores may not be completed today, she spoke to her Landlord for a while and he told her he was going to make a start in the bar area after breakfast. Lorna offered to help him but he told her to rest herself until tomorrow, New Years Day was always tiring after the late night celebrations. She told him it was no trouble, but he said he would be fine.
Lorna thanked him and helped herself to some breakfast, there was only one thing she wanted to do right now. She wanted to look through that book which was in her room, the letter from Levi had said it was her family records. She hadn't really had a chance to look through it yet, she had been too tired to do anything after last night. She ate her breakfast of porridge and buttered toast, she then hurried to her room. She opened the window's shutters to air out the room and she then made the bed, she wanted to tidy her room before she began to look through her family's records. But she stopped tidying up when some sunlight shone into the room, she was going to get a bit of fresh air while the district was quiet.
Grabbing her blue cloak from a coat peg near the room's door Lorna quickly put it on and put the book into her cotton shoulder bag, she was now ready to go. She hung the bag over her shoulder and let her cloak drape over her bag while she left the room, she then hurried downstairs to the kitchen. The Landlord was still in the kitchen with his family, she told him that she was going out for a walk. The Landlord gave Lorna a nod of his head while he ate his bread and cheese, he told her to take some apples with her in case she got hungry on her travels. She told him okay and helped herself to three apples from the straw basket near the pantry. She put the apples into her bag and said goodbye to everyone in the kitchen before she left the Tavern.
Lorna closed the Tavern's door behind her while she looked both ways down the street, it was very quiet outside this morning. The streets were empty and it wasn't that cold for the Winter season, it was a pleasant day. She put her hood up on her cloak before she hurried along the street, she was going to sit on the steps near the canal because it wasn't that far from the Tavern. It wasn't long until Lorna arrived at the canal of the Shiganshina District, she placed her bag down on the ground and sat down on one of the steps that led down to the water's edge. She looked both ways down the canal and watched a few small boats passing by while she leaned on her hand, the boats mostly used the canal system to transports goods to the different districts.
After a while Lorna pulled her hood down on her cloak and took the family records book from her bag, she then opened the book. She looked at the first page of the book and read through it, it was basically an introduction page to the book of the bloodline of the Faith family. She turned the page and saw the first part of her family's heritage, but it only began in the year 789. It was understandable due to the fact that the walls had been built more than 100 years ago, so family records may have not existed until they built the districts and gained a government. Lorna ran her finger tip down the page and read each name of the Faiths inside of her head, but to her disappoint it was only the records of her Father's bloodline. She would need to see the Jaeger family records to look into her Mother's side of the family.
Lorna sighed to herself while she turned another page in the book, but this was a good start on finding out if she had any relatives alive still on my Father's side. She sat and read through the records until she heard footsteps running behind her. She quickly looked over her shoulder and saw a young boy running along the canal's pathway. But he stopped halfway along the pathway and looked at her over his shoulder, he had an angry expression on his face. But she recognized him straight away, it was the doctor's son.
" Oh it's you..." Lorna said.
" Hey, I've got a name lady!" Eren frowned.
" I know, it's Eren." Lorna smiled while she turned her attention back to the book. " I remember you from The Blue Bird Tavern, you're Doctor Jaeger's son. You sat in the kitchen with April and me when your Father came to visit Jacob."
" And you're that strange woman who knocked the tankards off the bar and hid from us!" Eren said.
" That's right." Lorna nodded.
Lorna listened to his footsteps has he walked towards her, he sat down next to her on the step and took a look at the book she was reading. He asked her what she was reading, she told him that she was researching into her family's bloodline. She glanced at Eren a few times has he continued to look at the book now and again whilst she read it, but she didn't mind though. It said nothing about Jaegers in this book, so it was safe for him to take a look at it.
" So, what are you doing here anyway?" Lorna asked, she closed the book with smile. " I thought people around here spent time with their families on New Years Day, why aren't you with your parents?"
" I guess I could ask you the same question, why aren't you with your family?" Eren asked.
" My family died many years ago..." Lorna replied.
" You don't know how lucky you are not to have any parents.!" Eren replied with a sigh. " You don't have a nagging Mother telling you what to do with your future, she never let's me do anything!"
" You shouldn't talk like that, you don't know how lucky you are to have parents." Lorna sighed.
Lorna turned her gaze away from him and looked at the water flowing down the canal, he truly didn't know how lucky he was to have parents. She would do anything just to spend one more day with her Mother and Father, but she couldn't change the past. Lorna's thoughts were interrupted by plopping sound, she looked where the sound had come from and saw ripples forming on the water's surface. It happened again and she turned her gaze towards Eren, he was throwing pebbles into the canal. Watching Eren throw another pebble into the canal Lorna told him he had a pretty good throwing arm, he thanked her for the compliment. After a while he stopped throwing pebbles into the canal, he turned his attention towards Lorna and held a few pebbles towards her with a slight smirk on his face. She took the pebbles from his hand and got to her feet, Eren's gaze was still firmly set on her.
" Throw one!" Eren said.
" I've never thrown pebbles into the canal before..." Lorna said
" Seriously?" Eren asked, he looked amused. " Were you born in the underground or something? You sure don't look like an earthworm to me, but let's test your throwing arm."
" A challenge? " Lorna asked.
" Of course!" Eren smiled.
Lorna turned her attention towards the canal, she thought for a brief moment about her aim before she threw the pebble. She watched it go plop into the water of the canal, it didn't really go that far and she heard Eren laughing at her about the distance the pebble had gone. She told him to shut up in an amused tone, but he went onto tell her that she threw like a weak little woman. She couldn't help but laugh with him, he was right after all because she was a woman but she wouldn't exactly call herself weak. She stood with Eren and threw more of the pebbles into the canal with him until her stomach decided to rumble loudly, he even found that amusing.
Lorna told him that she should get going now because she was getting hungry, he told her he should do the same thing too. He told her that his Mother maybe expecting him back by lunch time, he didn't want to keep her waiting in case he got a scolding. She put the book away in her bag and took an apple from it, she then offered it to Eren. He refused at first and told her she should eat the apple herself instead of giving her food away to strangers, but when she told him she had another two apples in her bag he took it without a second thought.
Eren said goodbye to Lorna while she watched him running along the pathway, he hurried up some steps and disappeared behind a house. She hung her bag over her shoulder and wrapped her cloak around herself while she began to walk back to the Tavern, the wind was now getting up and dark clouds were forming in the sky. It looked like it was going to rain, hopefully the rain would hold off until she got back home.
A few months later.
The next few months passed by quickly, Lorna hadn't seen Levi for over two months which was worrying. She wasn't sure what had happened, but she had received a letter from Erwin Smith saying Levi would be disposed for the next three months which basically meant she wouldn't be able to see him for another month yet. She knew the Survey Corps had left the safety of Wall Maria twice in the last two months, she didn't really have a chance to watch them leave Shiganshina District because she had been working hard to save up some money to buy the Jaeger family records.
Today was like any other day, Lorna was working the afternoon shift with the Landlord and his wife whilst their children were at school. The lunch rush was now settling down, so she had decided to take her lunch break early and get herself some lunch while it was quiet. She helped herself to some bread and ham from the kitchen, she then decided to sit outside while she ate her lunch. She left the Tavern and sat on a small wooden crate near the entrance of the Tavern, but it wasn't long until a small stray black cat came sniffling out her lunch. She couldn't help but smile at the little fella, he was a cute. She shared some of her lunch with him while she watched the townsfolk of the Shiganshina District carry on with their day to day activates. She sometimes like to sit outside of the Tavern at lunch time and watch the world go by, it was better than staring at the Tavern's walls.
After Lorna had ate her lunch the cat had decided to jump onto her lap, he had taken a shine to her. She stroke him and listened to him purring, he seemed to be enjoying the attention. Lorna looked up from the cat when she heard some horses hooves clopping along the street, there was a dark haired female Scout riding the horse with the Survey Corps emblem on her green cloak. She watched her ride passed the Tavern, but without any warning she made eye contact with Lorna while she halted her horse. She gave Lorna a big smile and turned her horse back around, she then pulled her goggles away from her eyes.
" There you are, I've been looking for you everywhere!" She said, she got down from her horse and clapped her hands together. " I don't think you may remember me, but I'm Hange Zoe. We meet in Commander Erwin Smith's office a few months ago, I basically barged in on you and Captain Levi."
Lorna watched has Hange took hold of her horse's reins and led the horse toward her, but Lorna's attention was quickly distracted by the cat hissing on her lap. He jumped from her lap and hurried into the alleyway next to the Tavern, it seemed like the cat didn't like horses. She turned her attention back to this Hange Zoe, she was now standing in front of her. Lorna couldn't help but shuffle backwards on the crate because Hange was in her personal space which made her feel uncomfortable, the same had happened in Erwin's office.
" I'm here on the behalf of Commander Erwin or maybe Levi, I've not decided who's business I'm here on just yet." Hange said, she slightly bent down to Lorna's eye level. " But I remember you, those eyes of yours are very bright in the daylight. Do you know how the human eye allows light to enter them?"
" No..." Lorna replied.
" Well the light enters the pupil which is a hole located in the center of the iris of the eye that allows light to strike the retina. The pupil appears black because light rays entering the pupil which either is absorbed by the tissues inside the eye directly or it's absorbed after diffuse reflections within the eye that mostly miss exiting the narrow pupil!" Hange replied with cheery smile. " Can you believe I gained this knowledge by experimenting and dissecting Titan's eyes? Their body forms are basically like humans, we are more similar to them than pigs. It's a deeply thrilling subject if you are willing to listen to me, but I'm not here to teach biology lessons. I'm here on the behalf of Levi and Commander Erwin, I'm here to deliver you monthly allowance!"
" Who's Levi?" Lorna asked while she looked both ways down the street and continued with her white lie. " I have no idea who you are talking about Miss Zoe, you must have the wrong person..."
" Oh you don't have to play dumb around me because of the townsfolk, he's the cleaning freak with the vulgar mouth." Hange chuckled. " He's got no respect for his admirers, if only he would crack a smile now and again he would probably make some new friends!"
" I still have no idea who you are talking about Miss Zoe, but if you would please follow me inside of the Tavern." Lorna said, she picked her plate up from the ground. " The streets are no place for conversations, maybe you would like a tankard of ale."
" Oh I've got no time for ale or banter, all you've got to do is receive this bag of gold coins from me and then I'll let you get on with your job!" Hange said while she took a money bag from the inside of her jacket. " You've not been paid for the last two month, you must be short of money if you're working in a Tavern to support yourself. I'm not sure what Commander Erwin pays you for even though I would love a detailed report on your duties, your present in his office always stirs my curiosity."
" I visit Erwin to discuss my finances with him, it's basically very innocent..." Lorna said.
" Oh that old chestnut, but I'm more interested in your visits with Levi!" Hange smile and dropped the bag of money onto the empty plate. " He's a very hard nut to crack, so abrasive and vulgar with a streak of irritation running through his spine! But his body posture spoke differently when he was with you, it was like he had dropped his guard which I found fascinating."
" I've got no idea what you are talking about, he's just an old friend of mine!" Lorna said.
Hange laughed out loud for some reason, Lorna had no idea why she was laughing or what she was laughing about. She then noticed a few people stopping in the street, they were looking at Hange with confused expressions on their faces. The woman was drawing too much attention to them, she could now see why Levi had no patience with her. Lorna quickly got up from the crate and told Hange that she had finished her lunch break now, Hange told Lorna that it was a shame because she was enjoying their conversation.
Lorna gave Hange an awkward smile and told her that was nice seeing her again, she was beginning to creep her out. She watched Hange leading her horse away from the Tavern, but she stopped her horse in the middle of the street and rubbed it's nose while she turned her gaze back towards Lorna. She stared at her for a moment before she began to speak with her again, it felt like she was studying Lorna for some strange reason with her eyes.
" I shall now take my leave, I've got experiments to complete and people to see!" Hange said while she mounted her horse. " My experiments will not complete themselves and I need to buy some medicine before I return back to my garrison, but wouldn't it be interesting if my experiments could complete themselves. Oh my scientific thoughts do entertain me sometimes, could you imagine if Titan's could do experiments on humans?! The knowledge I could gain from their autopsy methods, bite down on the human's torso and rip it apart with their teeth!"
" You've lost me, what are you talking about again?" Lorna asked.
" I'm rambling nonsense once again, I need to learn how to make mental notes instead of sharing my thoughts out loud!" Hange laughed, she tapped her feet on the horse's side to make it walk. " I'll remind you to Levi, have a good day!"
" Erm, goodbye Hange..." Lorna said.
Lorna watched Hange riding her horse down the street, she was a confusing yet smart woman from what she had witnessed. But she hoped Hange would never deliver her monthly allowance ever again after that performance, there was now more people in the street watching Hange riding away because of her odd behaviour. Lorna turned her attention back to the plate and took the bag of money from it, she then glanced both ways down the street before she hurried back inside of the Tavern.
