"nice to see you too Kate" the stranger replied following her down the corridor and in to her office.
"you still haven't answered my question. Jim" she folded her arms turning to face him
"blunt as always. You haven't changed one bit" Jim smiled
"and you still seem to be spewing the same old bullshit. So, I will ask you again. What the hell do you want"
"fine. Have it your way. I want to see the girls" he said
"no way not going to happen" Kate said looking straight at him.
"oh, I disagree" Jim said with a snide smile
"really why the sudden interest in the girls. I mean you were never interested in them for the first 6 years of their life"
"I did my fair share"
"really, well let's see who was the one that was in the hospital 24/7 when Sovay was in the NICU attached to all sorts of machines, who was the one that was sleep deprived when they were screaming at every other hour for feeds or cutting their teeth. Where were you through the nightmares and bed wetting. Where were you on the first day at school, plays, sports days or parents' evenings" she said
"you know how it is Kate."
"you were stationed at home for all of that you just couldn't be bothered so don't you dare use that as an excuse. Where are the birthday and Christmas present for the last 3 years? Besides the girls don't want to see you"
"that's only because you have filled their heads with stuff to poison them against me" he said backing her in to a corner
"I have not. They are 6, they have their own minds and they are not stupid. They can see you don't care you can't even be bothered to spell their names right"
"only because you insisted on some dumb foreign way of spelling them." he said
"seriously that's the excuse because you didn't like the names I chose. You were hardly there. I went to every scan on my own, had to go through labour on my own and watch as they carted Sovay of to the NICU on my own. You wouldn't even discuss girls' names"
"it still didn't give you the right to drag them to the other end of the country away from their family" he said
"what family. I don't have a family to speak of and yours like you refused to see them. It was a too good opportunity to not take the transfer. Better hours so I can spend more time with them."
"is everything okay Lieutenant" Commander Marshall poked his head around the door after hearing the raised voices.
Stepping round from Jim she smiled grateful at the timing. "fine Sir. Jim was just leaving" she said glaring at him.
"you are going to regret this Kate mark my words" he said as he walked out
"Kate?" Marshall asked as she sat down visibly shaking
"I'm fine Sir" she stammered.
"you sure? It's just it seemed very heated and half the floor heard" he paused
"sorry Jim is my Ex-husband and I was kind of hoping he wouldn't find me up here" she sighed
"is there a safeguarding issue I need to flag up"
"no, it was nothing like that he is just a prick. It's the girls I am worried about, I have only just got them settled and he will just railroad all of that" she sighed
"well, if you want to talk, you know where to find me" he smiled
"thanks sir" she said as he walked out.
Sinking back in to her seat she tried to hold back the tears. She had finally found happiness up here and now he had to show up and ruin everything. She had to stay strong and not let him win but she was not going to let him hurt the girls again he had already broke their hearts once she wasn't going to let him do it again.
