A/N: Sorry for such a long awaited update. This story I had quite the writer's block on, so let's give this a shot!
Two-Bit and Steve were going to be at the main road again soon. They weren't sure if Darry had gotten there yet or not, but there was one more spot to check on their end.
"Okay, let's go out here before we meet up with Darry again," Two-Bit said parking his car, "And if we don't find anything, hopefully Darry has."
"I'm losing hope," Steve admitted. He had no idea what time it was, and it was exhausting him. The sky was beginning to look a little lighter, but maybe he was just going crazy.
"Come on man, don't talk like that. We can't be doing that right now," Two-Bit said, "We got to keep going for Soda, right?"
Steve slowly nodded, "Yeah, yeah we do"
"You've gone down such a deep hole this whole time," Two-Bit said, "You've changed a lot."
"You don't think I know that?"
"I don't know Steve, do you?"
"Yes Two-Bit! Damnit I know I've messed up! I've been a terrible friend, I get that!" Steve stared Two-Bit down as he let it out, "Don't you think I want to fix this?"
"You think the second Soda and Pony get home, you're going to be back to normal? That's not how it'll work."
Steve shook his head, "Let's just go look."
The boys got out of the car and began searching. Steve realized he wasn't going crazy, because it was becoming easier to search the wooded areas. It was going to become dangerous to search in the daylight. The fuzz could catch them lurking around, and once they found out who they were, they'd know exactly what they were up to. With the better light, Two-Bit and Steve began walking opposite directions to cover more ground. It wasn't long before Steve saw a figure laying on the ground.
"Oh my God," Steve muttered, walking closer to the figure, "Ponyboy?"
He examined closer and saw it was Pony, but he wasn't awake.
"Pony?" Steve asked shaking him, "Ponyboy?"
He wasn't moving.
"Two-Bit! Hey Two-Bit! Get over here!"
Steve heard rustling as Two-Bit ran towards him.
"Oh no!" Two-Bit gasped as he got to the ground, "Is he okay?"
"He's a little cold, but he still has color. I don't think he's been here long," Steve said, "Let's get him in the car and hurry to Darry."
Two-Bit and Steve carefully lifted Ponyboy, grabbed onto the bag they found nearby and brought it back to Two-Bit's car. They laid the young greaser in the backseat.
"Soda has to be out there," Steve commented.
"You're probably right. Okay, you go out there and keep looking. The sun is coming out, so we don't have much time. I'll drive to the main road, and see where Darry wants to bring Pony. I don't know if we can bring him to a hospital," Two-Bit said.
"Yeah, I don't know. Just go meet up with Darry. I'll look for Soda."
Steve felt himself tense up as he watched Two-Bit drive away. They found Ponyboy unconscious. He didn't appear dead though. How was Soda going to look?
Darry sat in his truck at the side of the road. He was hopeful Two-Bit and Steve were taking so long because they found something. The sun was coming up, and it was making Darry nervous. He couldn't stop looking now.
Suddenly, there was honking. Darry looked up and saw Two-Bit's car coming down the street, rather fast. He jumped out of his truck, scared but desperate to find out what was going on. Two-Bit got to the side of the road and hurried out.
"Darry, we got Ponyboy."
"You do?" Darry rushed to the door and opened it, "Ponyboy?"
Pony was under Two-Bit's jacket. His eyes were barely open.
"Pony? Are you okay?"
"D-Darry?" Pony said, weakly.
"Good to see he's awake," Two-Bit let out a sigh of relief, "He wasn't up when we found him."
"Pony?" Darry felt his eyes tear up, "What happened? Where's Soda?"
"I...I...I don't..."
"Shhh," Darry interrupted, "Don't worry about it Pony. Just rest. You clearly need it."
Darry closed the door, so Pony could stay warm. He turned towards Two-Bit, "Where's Steve? Where's Soda?"
"We didn't see Soda," Two-Bit answered, "Steve stayed to keep looking."
"Okay, okay..." Darry was thinking fast, trying to figure out what to do, "Pony needs to get home."
"I can take him home," Two-Bit offered, "I'll get him in bed, get him water, food, whatever. I won't answer the door. I won't let anyone in the house."
"No, no, I can't leave that on you to handle. I'll take Pony home. You help Steve find Soda. He couldn't be far from where Pony was."
"Okay, I can do that. We'll find Soda."
"Take my truck," Darry offered, "I don't want to move Pony anymore if we don't have to."
"Okay," Two-Bit agreed. He got into Darry's truck and began driving back down the way he just came.
Darry hurried. He had to help Ponyboy, but he couldn't get pulled over. His heart was racing and he wasn't going to know if they found Soda until they get back. The tears finally began falling, and they wouldn't slow down. Darry began praying to himself. He begged for Pony to be okay and for Soda to not be in any worse position.
