Well, actually, I've seen the movie referenced in the title of the episode, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It was...okay. Nothing much like the episode, but I don't remember that much about the movie. I guess you know what I think by that sentiment. Kung fu movies probably look cooler than their content, but if you love kung fu movies, tell me why you love them. I'm genuinely curious to hear.
By the way, a little fun fact: The belts in martial arts are white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and black. And Chris' one is red. Here's to the reviewers: Thank you, AnonBrowser, lordgemini, iwashere01 and OmnipotentAbsoluteUIGodzilla.
When we went back, I whispered to Harold "Was Courtney supposed to vote for me?"
Harold blinked at me. "How did you know about that? And wait, how did you know it was Courtney?"
I rolled my eyes. "I know Leshawna would do anything to stay in the game, and she knows you and Courtney dislike me. I would've thought she'd choose me because she could convince both of you. Considering Lindsay was in the bottom three and I know she's driving Courtney nuts, I guessed she must have switched her vote at the last minute."
Harold sighed. "Yeah, a tiebreaker was the plan. I should've seen it coming, when Courtney didn't vote with us after all."
"But why would she risk that?" I wondered.
"She tried to get us to switch to Lindsay." Harold explained. "She almost convinced me, actually, but not Leshawna. We went for you, as planned, but I think Courtney was banking on us overthinking and being swayed. Now she's probably going to work on you three to get me voted out for not voting with her."
He was right. Courtney was acting unusually friendly when I went back to our trailer. My alliance partners and I were planning to go straight to bed.
"Don't you three wanna stay up for a while?" Courtney asked us, smiling in a way I could tell was forced ."We could watch a romcom on my PDA!"
"No thanks." we all chorused.
Next, Courtney started trying to tempt us with snacks.
"Tempting," Beth said, "But we're not letting you in our alliance!"
Courtney scowled, and I quickly snagged her snack offers. "We'll take these, though." I said sweetly, tossing the chocolate to Lindsay, the chips to Beth and keeping the popcorn for myself. If she guessed about our alliance and wanted in on it, she must have been getting worried.
"I'd feel guilty about this if it was anyone but Courtney, but..." Beth admitted, tearing the bag open and scoffing the chips.
"Me too." Lindsay agreed, cramming a whole bar in her mouth at once. For all her skinniness, she could eat for Canada when it was the right treat.
"Well, she deserves it." I shrugged. "We'll have to actually buy our own snacks and do this again after the show's over. I'll really miss having you two in the bunk opposite mine."
And with that mushy exchange and a few crunchy moments, the night was over.
We woke up in...guess where? Back on Wawanakwa! Seriously, what was with all these challenges starting before we even knew what was going on? I suppose it was because movie heroes and heroines didn't get any warning, either.
Chris arrived in a martial arts suit. Flying on a wire. In a red belt.
"Hate to break it to you, Chrissy, but no martial arts have red belts." I snarked. "Was the costume trailer out of white ones? Cause we both know you gave up on judo after two classes."
Chris ignored me, and just did a bow and then said "Honourable competitors, welcome to the Total Drama kung fu reward challenge, shot on location here, in the beautiful Japanese woods!"
He then declared he was pairing people up – Lindsay with Courtney, and Beth with Harold.
"And what about me, Chrissy?" I asked.
Chris gave me a stern look and said "I was just getting to that. You earned yourself a penalty last night. Remember?" He looked at me very pointedly, letting me know that he wanted me to play along with whatever he was going to say. "You know, when you snuck off set to..go.." A skateboard was thrown to him by someone off set and he finished with "Skateboarding!" triumphantly.
Okay, it was plausible. I did like skateboarding. But I couldn't just let him make up a story that was so obviously fake.
I shrugged. "Nope. I didn't go skateboarding, but if that's the story you want to stick with about why I snuck off set, fine, I won't act like I tried to replace the snacks Courtney offered the other girls. And sorry, Court, but I didn't get around to it."
Chris didn't seem cross when I said that, so I guessed that contradicting his story that much was okay. The point was, I didn't get to compete. The two teams had to choose a fighter and a trainer. Of course, Harold and Courtney insisted on doing that. As soon as they'd left along with the cameras, Chris returned while I'd been standing there, looking lost.
"Okay, before you yell at me, let me explain." Chris said. "I didn't expect you to get this far. No one did. The producers have been getting on my back all season because they didn't think I gave you a hard enough time. The thing is, imagine the uproar and the plummeting ratings if my little cousin actually won the season! I'd be accused of favouritism and we'd lose most of our viewers. And I really want a third season. So here's the deal: You stir up some trouble, pick a team to sabotage and do whatever else I tell you for the rest of the season, and we send you off in the final three with half a mil. Please, Toni!"
I hesitated. It wasn't the money I'd wanted, it was the glory of winning. For the moment, I'd just have to try and play along. If I could let him think I'd do it, I'd at least get paid even if I legit lost.
"Fine." I said with a scowl and a sigh. "I'll do it."
Chris grinned at me. "Okay, now go to the makeup trailer. There's an outfit and a makeup artist who knows what I want you to look like. Then go spy on the teams to figure out how to sabotage. And you can make a confessional about being my mole if you want. The producers will cut it out if you say too much."
You'll never guess what. Chris wanted me to dress up as a geisha. Even I knew kung fu and geishas weren't from the same country. I hated to wonder what Harold would say, because I was sure he'd want to say something.
I did make a confessional. "Okay, so the deal is that I'll get five hundred grand if I sabotage the teams and do a bunch of other stuff to stir up trouble. And you know, if Chrissy had asked me to do it at the start of the season, I might've said yes, but I can't do it now! Especially with these teams – my allies are on both teams!" I sighed. "I guess I could go for Courtney and Lindsay, but it's a reward challenge. No one's going home. I guess...I could lie about it, but I really hate doing that." I sighed. "I'll see how it goes this episode, then decide what to do."
I couldn't honestly say I was going to try and only pretend to sabotage the teams and then lie about it, just in case Chris saw the confessional, so I made that up. And I hated having to say it. In fact, the only good thing about being a mole was that I got to have my hair straightened and then put up with combs to make me look more Japanese. For once, my hair had no way of tangling. No geisha would ever have tangled wavy hair.
After that, I observed the teams. I could tell that Beth had absolutely no idea what kind of fighting styles Harold was on about, while Lindsay just looked terrified as Courtney barked orders at her. Neither of them seemed on the right track to win, at least at first.
As I continued going back from one team to another, I noticed a marked improvement in how Lindsay was performing. Courtney had calmed down a little and was pushing her hard, but not so hard that she'd crack under the pressure. Beth, however, continued to stare at Harold and look puzzled half the time. The other part, she awkwardly tried to get into positions and take swings.
At the end of the morning, Chris finally revealed how the kung fu fight was going to take place. Thing was, the fighters would be put into robot suits, and the trainers would use joysticks to move them around. So the training was essentially pointless. Plus, pretty much any cheat advice I could give wouldn't really do much.
As for me, I was standing by a gong. "When the beautiful geisha sounds the gong," Chris said, "The match will begin."
"Uh, Chris," Harold spoke up, "I'm afraid you guys are confusing cultures. Geishas are Japanese, but kung fu is Chinese."
"I'm sorry about this, Harold,' I said, "But I think you're the only person who's actually bothered. Frankly, I'm just glad I got a good hair care moment out of this outfit."
My advice to each team was easy. When I went to Beth and Harold, I whispered in Harold's ear "Lindsay's fierce, but she's not very balanced. Get Beth to go for the ankles."
Then, when Courtney excitedly tried to get information out of me, I told her "Don't worry. Harold will be trying a ton of fancy fight moves. Just go straight."
I went back to my place, and Chris nudged me. "So, which team has the inside track?" he asked me quietly.
I shrugged. "I guess probably Beth and Harold. They're not as good as Lindsay and Courtney are, but I gave them information that's more easy to use. It stirs things up regardless, right?"
Chris looked torn between annoyance and triumph. Then, he grinned. "Well, I would rather you give one team an inherent advantage...but I guess closer competiton does get us better ratings, so you've got a clear road right now."
As it was, Beth and Harold won. Lindsay's robot was knocked on its back when Harold kept making Beth's robot swipe at her ankles. Courtney shot a death glare at me, but I shrugged sheepishly at her. It wasn't my fault I had to feed them info that didn't work.
While the two girls were on kitchen duty and had to make fish noodle soup, I was supposed to keep trying to push an advantage to one of the others in their second challenge, where they had to climb a mountain and brew tea for a Sasquatch/Kung fu master. They had the water while climbing, so if they spilled any, too bad.
I didn't know what to do to sabotage them this time, even though I was on a wire so I didn't have to climb. The two weren't even working together any more. After some thought, I just whispered to Beth "Remember to pace yourself. Harold's good at a lot, but he's physically weak, so if you go steadily, it should be easier to beat him."
As it was, Beth did eventually win, although only by a few seconds.
Ugh. As reward challenges went, it was the most boring thing I'd ever experienced, especially as I had to just hang around and whisper things instead of actually playing.
I went to ask Chris something while the others were enjoying their soup. "Um, am I going to actually get to compete in the next two elimination challenges?" I asked. "I mean, that's most of what I came here to do, and people will start asking if I don't."
Chris gave me his most annoying grin. "It would be kind of suspicious if you didn't, wouldn't it? We'll keep you in and with pay as long as you play along with us and keep stirring up some trouble without getting caught. Or telling anyone. And yes, you will get to compete in the next few challenges. That was the last reward challenge, by the way. There's four episodes left and five of you. We might have to do a double elimination after the second where we'll send you home with someone else, but it all depends on how much overtime I have to do before I leave for vacation."
I shrugged. "Whatever."
But I knew one thing. If sabotage was as boring as it was this episode. I might not want the half million. Maybe I should just go back to trying to win.
I know, dull, boring episode. After the Rock'n'Roll episode, I felt like the season was going a bit flat. But hey, space and animal buddy weren't too bad. Sorry this was a bit lackluster. See ya!
