Chapter 12

Sam rolled over in bed and stared bleary eyed at the window to see sunlight streaming in around the curtain and knew that it was later than he thought. He looked to the other twin bed in the room and saw it was empty. He lay there a minute before stretching his long frame and pushing himself from the bed. He found clean clothes, thinking he should do some laundry while they were here. After using the bathroom and getting dressed, Sam wandered down the stairs and toward the kitchen where he could hear voices.

"About time you decided to join the living," Dean told him as he stepped into the kitchen.

"Why didn't you wake me?" Sam questioned heading for the coffee pot to pour a cup.

"Didn't see a reason to, you were sleeping so soundly, I thought you needed the rest," Dean shrugged. "I'm heading out to the garage to help Bobby. You still going into town with Dom?"

"Yeah, we'll do the supply run."

"Make sure to get some jerky and pie. Don't forget the pie," Dean ordered him before heading for the front door.

"Your brother sure likes his pie," Dom chuckled as he finished his breakfast.

"That he does. Let me grab something to eat and we'll head into town. It's not a big place, but they have a few nice places to shop. I especially like the used bookstore."

"That's fine, take your time Sam." Dom watched him look in the fridge for something to eat and suddenly stop like he had forgotten what he was doing. It happened for only a moment before Sam was moving again. "Would you like to work on your powers this afternoon after lunch?"

"Yeah, that would be good. Dean will be elbow deep in some engine bay and won't be in our way."

"How are you doing with them? Are you having any problems?" Dom probed carefully. He did not want to come right out and ask Sam was he having issues or problems. He wanted to give Sam a chance to talk.

"I think pretty good. I've been trying to document the times I use them to help me understand them more. I've also read a few books on psychic powers, but it's hard to trust what you read."

"That is true. If you need to talk about anything, we can do that."

"Thanks. Would you mind driving since I'm sure Dean will probably want to check his 'Baby' out while we are here."

"Not at all."

"Let me go grab my jacket and wallet and I'll be ready," Sam told him spooning the last of the yogurt from the container to eat. "Maybe we'll grab some lunch for everyone while we're in town. There's a great deli right off Main Street I like to visit."

"It's your call, I'm just the driver."

Sam hurried up the stairs to find his jacket and get his wallet. He raided Dean's wallet for money to be sure he had enough before heading back downstairs. Dom was waiting at the front door for him and they went out to Dom's car to go to town.

"Why don't I show you around some and if you want to come into town alone, you'll know where things are?" Sam suggested as Dom pulled into the outskirts of Sioux Falls.

"That sounds good, just tell me where to go," Dom agreed.

"Turn right on the next road, we'll go by the library first. It's small but has some good resources."

Dom followed Sam's directions and they drove by the library, the school where Dean and he went to school when they were young and stayed with Bobby. He showed Dom the best thrift stores in town, the movie theater, the better restaurants, and even stopped to grab drinks at one of them. He pointed out the gas stations that had the cheapest prices, where to get a haircut if he needed it and the used bookstore that they made a stop at too. They made their round through town hitting the highlights, before heading to the grocery store several hours later.

"You can pull in there and park anywhere," Sam directed Dom to the grocery store. He waited until he found a space and parked and then got out. "We'll get the basics along with some meats and fresh fruit and vegetables. I figure get enough to last about a week since I'm not sure how long we'll be here. If there is anything you want, go ahead and get it."

"I'm sure whatever you get will be fine with me. I've learned to adapt to your country."

"Winchester!" a familiar voice called to him before he got to the front doors of the store.

Sam looked around trying to locate the voice and saw a familiar face approaching him.

"Jody, good to see you," Sam greeted her as she stopped beside him and gave her a hug.

"The same Sam. You boys in town for a few days?"

"Yeah, taking a little downtime. Jody this is Dominick, he's in our line of work. Dom, Sheriff Mills. She knows about what we do and has helped us out a few times. She's a good ally."

"Sheriff, nice to make your acquaintance," Dom greeted the sheriff with a slight bow of his head and a shake of her hand.

"Well, it's good to meet you Dominick," Jody replied shaking his hand.

"Please, call me Dom."

"Alright Dom and call me Jody. We're not that formal around here. How long you around for Sam?"

"Not sure four or five days probably depends on how long Dean can stay in one place."

"How is your brother doing, you know, after what happened?"

"It's a slow process, but he's getting better. You know Dean," Sam explained.

"Well, you tell him, and Bobby I said hello and tell Dean to stop by and see me while he's in town."

"I will Jody. Better run and get the shopping done."

"It is good to see you Sam, you take care."

"I will."

"Nice to meet you too Dom."

"Likewise, Jody."

Sam and Dom watched the sheriff walk away before heading into the store. Sam grabbed a buggy and headed for the produce section first. He picked out some fresh fruit and vegetables before continuing back to the meat department to get some meats for their meals. They headed over to the dairy department to pick up milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, and juice. Dom added a box of granola bars and some Gatorade to the buggy.

"I'm going to get some laundry detergent so I can wash our clothes. You're welcome to wash yours if you like."

"Thanks, I'll do that. Don't forget Dean wanted jerky and pie."

"Oh, believe me, we couldn't go home if we didn't get him pie. I made that mistake once and lived to regret it."

"I can imagine," Dom laughed knowing how passionate Dean seemed about certain things like pie.

"I only need to get a few more things and I will be done. Is there anything else you want?"

"I think I'm good," Dom replied picking up a bottle of shampoo and pack of razors as they passed the health and beauty section.

"I should get some more gauze, bandages, and Tylenol for the first aid kit while I'm here," Sam mumbled stopping long enough to gather the items before continuing toward the checkouts.

He went through the self-checkout and scanned his purchases before bagging them. Once he was done, Sam paid and pushed the buggy toward the doors and out to Dom's car.

"The deli should be open now, so we can go by and get some subs for lunch. I got some chips to go with them."

"Sounds like a plan to me. Is it the deli we passed on the way into town?"

"Yes, they have the best subs in town."

Dom pulled up the driveway to the salvage yard and parked beside the house. The Impala was missing now, and Sam told him Dean probably had it down at the garage working on it. They got out and carried the bags inside.

"I'll put the groceries away, why don't you go tell Bobby and Dean we brought lunch?" Sam told him as he started taking items from the bags to put away.

"Alright," Dom replied heading back outside and looking toward the garage that sat below the house. He walked down the gravel road and as he got closer could hear music coming from inside the building. Dom stopped at a rolling door and looked inside to see the Impala up on jacks and Dean underneath it. He saw Bobby was working on an engine of a car in the bay beside it. He walked closer so he could be heard before speaking.

"Hey Dean," Dom called in a friendly voice.

"Hey kid," Dean replied, sliding out from under the Impala.

"We brought subs for lunch. Sam wanted me to let you know if you're ready to eat."

"Hear that Bobby, Sammy brought lunch."

"I hear ya. I'm almost done with this."

"Tell Sammy we'll be in shortly."

"Okay, sounds good." Dom headed back inside to let Sam know and help get lunch ready. He walked back into the kitchen to find Sam finishing putting away the last of the food he had bought. "They will be in shortly, what can I do?"

"You can put out some paper plates and put the chips on the table," Sam suggested.

"Okay." Dom found the paper plates and placed four around the table and set the bags of chips in the middle by the bag of subs. He looked up when he heard the door open and heard Dean and Bobby talking as they made their way inside.

"Hear you got us some lunch Sammy," Dean said.

"Yep, subs from that deli we like. And before you ask, yes, I got you pie."

"You're the best bro. I knew I kept you around for a reason."

"Funny," Sam said sarcastically. "What does everyone want to drink?"

"I say we have one of the beers we brought. They should be nice and cold by now."

"Bobby, Dom, that okay with you?"

"It's fine with me," Dom answered.

"Sure, son, wouldn't mind trying one," Bobby replied.

"Four beers it is," Sam agreed going to the fridge to get them out. He took the bottles to the table and sat them around at the plates.

Dean moved to the sink to wash his hands before taking a seat at the table. Sam and Dom took a seat and waited for Bobby to join them. Sam pulled out the subs and passed them out as Dean opened the bags of chips and dumped some on his plate before passing them along. They began to eat and carried on light conversation, enjoying the food and the company.

Bobby and Dean were going to finish in the garage that afternoon and Sam let them know that Dom and he were going to be on the deck doing a little training. Dean only nodded but did not say anything about it, but Sam could sense his uneasiness. After they cleaned up, they went their separate ways, Bobby and Dean to the garage and Dom and Sam to the back deck.
