Ch09 A Legacy of Two Kingdoms
~*~London, England, MI6~*~
Sir Christopher Curwenand the regional Interpol director Morse watched as Interpol agent Katarina and the mysterious Sailor V walked into his office.
"Agent Katarina, Sailor V please be seated."
"Thank you, Sir Christopher," said Katarina nervously.
"So you have information that is so important that you wanted to inform MI6 and Interpol together," said Morse.
"It's the Dark Agency." Katarina sighed. "They are a group of rogue youma."
"That explains why people kept feeling tired around their pop stars," said Morse narrowing his eyes. "I know Beryl has her hands full with those two rogue Warrior Princes in Japan but she could have informed us that a group of youma has also gone rogue."
"The problem is these are the decedents of youma that went rogue thousands of years ago," said Katarina.
"What? How do you know this?"
Katarina sighed. "Before I answer that there is something I must make clear. As long as a Dark Kingdom youma's clan isn't threatened and it doesn't interfere with gathering energy they are totally loyal to whatever group they have become a part of. You are familiar with the story of changelings, right?"
"Yes, a being of the faerie realm replaces a human child. But I…," Sir Christopher's eyes widened. "Good grief. The faerie realm is the Dark Kingdom."
"Got it in one," said Katarina. "These projects were Jadeite's speciality. He would use ki manipulation to allow a youma to take on the identity of a child that had died altering records so the deception would be difficult to detect. Though some times he did too good a job and the youma would forget it was a youma but would still do its job of energy collection at a unconscious level. But occasionally something would happen that would cause the youma to remember."
Katarina paused and then shifted form. "The recent events caused me to remember that I am Papillon of the Lepid clan." Papillon sighed. "Sailor V and I talked this over and in good continence I must request that I be restricted from further contact with sensitive or secret information because I have no bloody control over the memory archive."
"You mean everything you have seen and heard up to now…."
"Yeh. The one good thing is there is no real way to separate the wheat from the chaff. Beryl or my clan would have to slug through 16 hours per day of incidental stuff to find a nugget of information. The only thing that would make it easier would be peaks of high Ki energy transfer...or the youma's death."
"Which is how Beryl as able to find the memories of the youma who in her words 'had thrown their moral compass into a garbage can'," said director Morse.
"Yes. But the archive is limited to youma born in the Dark Kingdom. Youma have a way to pass the ability to send energy down but not the connection to memories. So we are blind, deaf, and dumb to the decedents of Osiris and his happy little group."
"Osiris? As in Egyptian god Osiris?!"
"Yes. But these are youma that have been Earthside for generations. I know how Dark Kingdom youma think. These youma I know nothing about. I have no idea other then gathering energy what the goals of the Dark Agency are."
The phone rang startling everyone. "Mr. Curwen, it's...Beryl Saotome on line 2. Only... she is calling herself Queen Beryl."
"I'll take it in here."
"Sir Christopher Curwen, I am calling you not as the CEO of Tegnum Renebris but as the ruler of the Dark Kingdom as a courtesy," said Beryl's voice over the speaker then sighed. "To be blunt and cut to the chase, you have not only the decedents of a rogue youma clan but a Sailor Senshi as well running around in London."
"It's larger then that, Sovereign of Earth, Protector of the Youma," commented Papillon.
"Sovereign of… What the hell? We're not supposed to have had an operation in England, ever!"
"The family I was placed in was in Canada. They were were killed in a car accident and their closest relation who could take care of me was in England. I am Papillon of the Lepid clan and my human identity is Katarina Taylor agent of Interpol."
Beryl signed. "I assume you told Mr. Curwen out of loyalty to the English crown. Can't fault you on that and I understand. But you do understand this puts me in an awkward position, given the Memory Archive."
"I told them the limitations. And...well, Sailor V...Sailor Venus is with me."
"Great. And what is with the 'larger then that' comment?"
"The Dark Agency, the rogue youma group, are an international pop star company. They have branches in Germany, China,...and Japan."
"Of course they do. Why should things be easy?" Beryl groaned. "As if my two rogue Warrior Princess and wondering if Sailor Pluto, Uranus, and/or Neptune is going to pop up and start turning this country into a freaking war zone. Never mind the worry that Queen Serenity might have reincarnated along with everybody else."
Papillon promptly paled. "Queen Serenity? You think that murdering maniac might be running around? That airheaded raciest psycho killed 20 billion people minimum with her ignorant stupidity. That is four times the entire population of Earth for crying out loud!" Papillon paused. "Wait a minute. What of Sailor Saturn?"
"Uh...about her."
"Oh crap."
About an hour later Sir Christopher Curwen was sitting in his office leaning back in thought. He was feeling like he had been dropped into an episode of Doctor Who. At least the force running around out there weren't on par with the Daleks. Though a solar system killing moronic maniac, her two possible three loyal soldiers, and a life draining energy being was getting freaking close. And instead of a Time Lord what did England have? A single youma what worked for Interpol, a talking cat (which was why Sailor Venus had insisted on brining her 'pet'), and a barely 14 year old girl on par with a division who was a thousandth of the firepower any one of Queen Serenity's loyal soldiers. If the idea of a 14 year old girl running around with the firepower of around 20,000 men was frightening, the idea of a person with thousand times that firepower or 20 million soldiers was terrifying. It had only been the close proximity of the Moon Kingdom's capital that had allowed the Earth Kingdom to stand up to the insane firepower the Moon Kingdom had had.
Which brought up the other terrifying fact. Each youma back then had been on par with Sailor Venus and there were a million of them or the equivalent of 20 billion soldiers because the Dark Kingdom was effectively Sparta on an overdose of steroids. But then he realized that they weren't all battle soldiers and found out even during the World Wars the most in a year Beryl could send to Earth had been not even a 100 youma and they had been scattered all over the globe. There was no formal command structure and while called 'generals' the four directly under Beryl weren't exactly military minded and there was no chain of command. The Dark Kingdom may have numbers but it didn't have the structure to function as a modern army. If anything it was more like the Ancient Greeks and their city states with the various youma clans trying to achieve prestige for their own clans rather then the Dark Kingdom as a whole. More over both Beryl and Papillon agreed that the youma of today were nowhere near the power they had back then.
But the Moon Kingdom's soldiers...that was a totally different matter. Everything Beryl had been able to gleam showed in terms of raw power they were just as strong now as back then. While he felt the stories of Sailor Saturn being able to blow up planets had been Moon Kingdom propaganda the idea of a 10 year old with even Sailor V's power level wasn't the sort of thing to give you pleasant dreams never mind one 1,000 times that power level. Time would tell if what he had learned today would result in nightmares.
~*~Jubian ward, Hikawa Shrine, some time later~*~
"Ladies, My Queen," said Jadeite solemnly. "We may have another problem."
"Now what did those two idiots do?" asked Usagi.
"Nothing. This is in regards to Meiou Setsuna, a university physics student who is visiting the various youmafied schools for a paper she is working on. I was going to touch base with her to see just what her paper was about and see if I could help...until I got a look at her. At which point I booked it out of there."
"What prompted that reaction?" asked Usagi
"Long green hair, piecing red eyes, stands around 170 CM. Sound like anyone we know? More over the university she supposedly is from has digital records on her but no hard copies. I checked."
"That is just freaking great," grumbled Rei. "The one Sailor Scout who survived the war and therefore actually knows and has used her power set is poking around. I guess we're lucky it wasn't Uranus or Neptune. But my memories, even assisted by the great fire, give no indication if she is on our side...or Queen Serenity's."
"Can't help you much there," commented Beryl. "Pluto was a cypher in my time. The only thing anyone knew was a legend of the only 'evil' queen the Moon Kingdom ever had, Queen Hecate, being taken out by one of her predecessors at the cost of her own life."
Ami brought up the Mercury computer interface and after a moment blinked her eyes in surprise. "According to this, Queen Hecate did exist about 20,000 years before your time and was killed because she wanted to ruthlessly imprison those who opposed her...in a prison outside this universe with no darkness or light just perpetual twilight formed from the life energy of those that had challenged the queen."
"So the Dark Kingdom was actually her baby, cute. And the thing was so badly worded it didn't distinguish which queen." Beryl sighed giving a humorless chuckle "So even if I hadn't resisted we would be still be in this situation."
"I don't get it. The Earth wasn't part of the Moon Kingdom so why did it get clobbered?" asked Usagi.
"Because it founded the Moon Kingdom," said Ami. "It had to given the state of the Moon and the other planets."
"And it was related enough that the command messed up its ki based technology," commented Ko Ron. "As a matter of reference just how powerful is Sailor Pluto?"
"Other then being an Outer and being either just above or below Sailor Saturn in terms of raw power I don't have much," said Beryl looking at Ami.
Ami nodded and frowned as the data flashed before her eyes. "This only lists three abilities: Teleportation, Death Scream attack (which is comparative to a more focused Silent Glaive Surprise), and...Time Stop. Thankfully that last one seems to be flawed to where it can give the user a serious case of dead though otherwise it seems to do 'what it says on the tin' so to speak."
"Can not will. Great," sighed Beryl. "The one good thing is she was uncertain enough not to use it 12,000 years ago. So it isn't like she can pop in and kill all of us before we can even react. At least with Death Scream we have a way to dodge, or in the case of Mistress Saturn block that."
Beryl gestured a staff of gray crystal appearing in her hand. "Speaking of which," she said looking right at Mistress Saturn. "Time to practice the moves I put into your head so they become as natural as breathing."
Mistress Saturn nodded as she swung the Silent Glaive which Beryl effortlessly parried and soon was on her back her feet knocked out from under her. She changed from and swept Beryl off her feet.
"Got to remember you can do that little trick," said Beryl as both she and Saturn rolled to their feet. Beryl smiled as Saturn parried her thrust and then had to counter the recovery. "You're getting better."
"We are learning to flow from one to the other," said Saturn in that weird echoey voice she had when both the spirit and the host spoke. "We want to take it up a notch."
Beryl nodded. "Ki blast!"
"Silence Wall!" Beryl nodded as her ki bounced off the invisible wall.
Beryl launched herself in the air but Saturn simply smiled. Beryl found out why as she slammed into an invisible barrier. "Just because we said Silence Wall doesn't mean it is actually a wall."
"Cute," replied Beryl pulling herself to a standing position on top of the barrier. "And you didn't follow it up why?"
"Can't," said Saturn as she hit a part of the barrier. "This variation is solid on the inside as well."
"But why would, uh oh…" commented Beryl as Saturn jumped forward and Beryl found her self trying to stay on top of the invisible sphere. Beryl leaped off the sphere and gestured. Saturn in her invisible sphere slammed into a Hard Thought wall. At which point Newton's Law kicked in and Saturn slammed into the side of her own sphere.
"Ok. That is a major flaw with this technique. Ouch."
"True, but you improvised your power in a way I didn't think possible."
"Very skilled," said Sham Pu nervously.
"And with very dangerous implications regarding Pluto...and Queen Serenity," commented Ko Ron.
"Uranus and Neptune were no slouches either," warned Beryl. "But you are right. We need to worry about the one we know is out and running around then the three who might be. Speaking of running around I wonder where Genma the Wonder Idiot is."
Elsewhere a bear like youma was wondering where it had all go wrong. At least as a panda he had still been male but this new form was a weak female. One good thing was other then the bear like features and black and white coloring this looked nothing like the panda form his wife, Nodoka, had seen him in. As an added bonus he could speak so no more signs to give away who he really was.
As Genma walked he heard crying. Following the sound he found a youma in an alley a tanto in its hand. "I can't live as a monster. Why can't I do the honorable thing?" it said as it thrust the tanto deep into its belly and pulled upward. Reflexively Genma ran up and grabbed the tanto. It was only then he realized not only was there no blood but no wound either. "What?"
"I've tried to cut my own throat, my wrists, and my belly open and nothing works," wailed the youma.
Genma pulled the youma to her feet as she continued to babble and sob. Genma shook his head. What was he doing? Why was he getting involved? Then it hit him. 'The duty of a martial artist is tp protect those who cannot protect themselves.' How long had he forgotten that? Genma then narrowed his eyes. More importantly why had he remembered it now?
It didn't matter. This person had such a bad reaction to becoming a youma that they were trying to kill themselves. It was his duty as a martial artist to help this person and if he couldn't do it on his own find someone that could. Thankful the youma didn't resist as he lead her to the only place he could think of...a police station. The irony of his constant statement 'The life of a martial artist is filled with peril.' wasn't lost on him.
Of course they would want a name. Clearly using his real one was out of the question but a name did flash in his mind. Funny how this idea seemed so natural. Almost...like he had done it before. Shrugging Genma led the youma into the station.
~*~Some time later at the Hikawa Shrine~*~
Ko Ron may have not been showing it but even as poorly skilled and trained these reincarnated warriors of the old Moon Kingdom were, they actually frightened her. As powerful as Beryl and her reincarnated sister were, Beryl was quite clear that any one of the Outers could hold their own in terms of raw power.
It didn't help Beryl revealed that all Mistress 9 had really done was make Saturn better able to access and control the power she had. That meant the ki aura that make you feel if you were seeing a personification of Death itself was part of this Sailor Senshi's power set. Ko Ron wasn't sure if her training was enough to shake off the aura of dread that anyone able to sense Ki likely felt. That feeling was strong enough she was sure it would throw off her concentration and when facing someone of this power level...that would be a fatal mistake if they were playing for keeps.
Beryl smiled as she gestured. Out of ground came a statue of gray crystal holding what looked like a pole arm sized key. Ko Ron then nearly fell off her staff as the statue started to move. Mistress Saturn parried the statue's attack and dodged Beryl's.
"Neat trick."
"Thanks. Got the idea from the story of the Golem of Prague. Has one major downside."
"Which is?"
Beryl grinned. "Isn't it obvious?"
"Your reflexes seem slower and you are fighting more defensively," Mistress Saturn's eyes widened as she blocked the statue'sswing. "Your mind is trying to control two bodies at the same time." Mistress Saturn jumped back and slammed the Silent Glaive into the statue's head causing it to shatter.
"What?" whispered Beryl. "I didn't think...crap." Beryl then cartwheeled out of the way of the Silent Glaive and grabbed the statue's weapon using it to knock the Silent Glaive to the ground and then rushed Mistress Saturn knocking them both to the ground.
"You seemed surprised." commented Mistress Saturn as a quarterstaff make of Hard Thought held her down by the neck.
"I was taught Hard Thought was unbreakable unless you purposely made it with flaws. Should have known better. It is a type of crystal and all crystals have flaws and imperfections."
"Well my offense clearly needs work. But if your Hard Thought is breakable the same must be true of Silence Wall."
"Actually no," said Ami. Silence Wall is actively reinforced by ki. Hard Thought isn't...it's ki reinforcement is passive."
"That and I couldn't sense any flaws in the Silence Wall that an attack like Breaking Point could use to break through," said Ko Ron.
Eight notes were heard. "Looks like training is over," commented Beryl as she pulled a small grey phone. "Beryl here."
Beryl frowned and then scowled. "I see. Keep her from trying to hurt herself. I bringing help."
Beryl then closed the the phone with a snap. "Usagi, Elder, I need you both to come with me. One my fears just became a reality and I need your help."
"What fear is that?" asked Usagi.
Beryl looked at Usagi her eyes as hard as flint. "One of the youmaized people just tried to kill themselves."
~*~Police Staton, Jubian ward~*~
Genma frowned as Beryl and several others entered. Beryl talked to one of the officers who pointed to him. Beryl nodded walking towards him. Normally he would be panicking but he felt strangely calm.
"Thank you,…"
Well here it was the real moment of truth. "Yangyin of the Ursa clan, Queen Beryl."
Beryl nodded smiling. Then she frowned. "How bad?"
"She was trying to slit her belly without a second. She found out that doesn't work."
"No, it wouldn't."
"I am curious," said one of the officers. "As to why it didn't work."
"It has to do with the youma shapeshifting power," said Beryl. "Unlike their human...ancestors they are effectively homogenous."
"You mean in youma form we have no heart, liver, or brain?!" asked Ami.
Beryl smiled. "I said effectively. I didn't say they actually were. It's complicated. To vastly oversimplify, their ability to shapeshift means they can close up any wounds to their organs to point it might as well count as instant regeneration. They can move their organs around so that lopping of a youma's head would be ineffective."
"Of course things that effect the entire body, like poison, fire, and radiation, are as deadly to a youma as they are to a human. That is one of the reasons why Petaran of the Floria Clan was so deadly – she had the rare ability to actually generate cyanide."
"So that is how she was able to tear through so many of her fellow youma."
Beryl nodded. "Thankfully for us her ability was so rare that in the 12,000 years I ran the Dark Kingdom I haven't seen any youma with that ability though there have been others in the Flora clan that can generate other nasty toxins."
Beryl walked to where the youma sat hugging her self. Kneeling down Beryl reached over and raised the youma's head. "Heard you tried to kill yourself."
"I'm a monster. I'm impure. I'm lower then Burakumin."
Beryl's eyes flashed with anger and she back handed the youma knocking her into a wall. "Listen to me," snarled Beryl lifting the youma with both hands and slamming her into the wall again. "In this form you are a youma. A being who ancestors stood against the Moon Kingdom and the evil that was Queen Serenity. Through their blood you are related to kami such as Osiris, Isis, Ra, and many that even I do not know. Blast it, through their blood you are related to Tennō Heika... and to me."
The youma blinked her eyes. "I'm related to Tennō Heika and you?"
Beryl nodded.
"And you both would accept me...as this?"
"Yes."
The youma started to cry and Beryl let her go and then hugged her.
"If you excuse me," said Genma. "I have to find a Man in Gray and unload some of the Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū on his sorry ass."
"Assuming you can catch… wait a minute. Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū?" Beryl let the youma go and Genma found himself slammed into a wall. "Saotome Genma, I presume." Beryl paused. "You could have run away and hid but you didn't."
"Being turned into a youma and see her trying to kill herself awakened something in me I had lost. The martial artist I wanted to become...before I met the master."
"Happosai," growled Beryl who then frowned again. "That name you gave."
"It seemed so...natural."
"You wouldn't be the first youma sent to Earth that reincarnated as a human. Your wife was not happy with you but this...changes things."
Genma looked at the youma. "Even if her family rejects her, she has you...and Tennō Heika."
"That is why I said that anyone rejected by their family would accepted in mine."
"There is one big problem with that. Me." Ganma sighed. "You weren't there when I mentioned the Chardin family. Though that bad idea Soun and I came up with together."
"What did you two do?" asked Beryl her voice cold.
"Promised our daughter's hand in marriage to pay off an insane dinner bill."
"And since Ranma is also my sister but biological your offspring… Wonderful." Beryl sighed. "Thankfully my personal wealth will be able to cover it with interest if this Chardin family comes knocking."
