Chapter 09: Wishing Star
[Let's go on a journey tonight to the sky of million stars sparkling – Hemenway's Dreamboat]
It wasn't a dream.
Before she could realize her tears flow down in her eyes. She had forgotten about this photo because after taking this photo a lot of things happened. It wasn't a dream after all; it wasn't in her mind all along.
She badly wants to see him again, to see amazing things with him in his world. But just like the spirit who came to the cafeteria, she won't be seeing him again.
How come that he will just disappear like that without telling her anything?
"I just wanted to be selfish this time that's why I brought you here, please forgive me Miku."
"I won't hate you, Len."
"Even if you don't ever see me again?"
Is this what he means?
Tears flooding down, putting down the picture as she tried to hide her face with her shaky hands. She cried, she can't stop it.
Finally realizing what he meant by that time.
"Hatsune, what's wrong?" Fukase asked worriedly when she suddenly starts crying. Making the other customer looks at them, the waitress who passed by them will surely can't ignore them.
Fukase stood up, going beside her as he tried to hug her, comforting her. He has no idea why she suddenly starts crying when she saw the picture. Later, she starts to calm down. And Fukase moved his chair closer to her to help her relax.
"I'm sorry, I just remember something when I saw the photo." Miku sniffed, drinking his cold iced coffee.
She looks so happy in the picture, with a mascot and the couressel at the back. It was a really happy day and yet why did she cry so sad when she saw the photo.
"It's alright; I thought I should pass to you this picture when I saw it in the store hanging in the wall," Fukase explained, maybe it's a good thing that he delivers it to her. He wondered why it seems like the picture held something in her heart.
"Thank you Fukase, you don't know how happy I am. Even though I just cried ago, but this photo held so many memories with me." Miku said as she picked the photo again, gazing at the happy memory.
"I don't know, but you saw me again so mess. I'm sorry for troubling you." Miku apologized as she wiped her tears with a tissue.
"It's alright," Fukase assured her, he looks down at the photo. That photo is also memorable for him; he even made a copy of it.
"Thank you for passing this picture, how can I pay you?"
"Oh no, it's alright. You know it's free in Matryoshka Land if a mascot asks you for a date."
"That's true, but after taking this picture I forgot to get it because things after the event are all a kind of a mess and I end it forgotten about it," Miku said sadly, remembering the events.
"Yeah, you just walk out when Megurine and Shion saw us waiting in line for the ferri―" he immediately shut his mouth when Miku heard him say [saw us waiting in line for the…]
She looked at him quizzically, trying to process what he had said. "What do you mean? How did you know that I walked away when Luka and Kaito saw me waiting in line in the Ferris wheel with this mascot?"
Trying to connect the dots, but she can't imagine if he doesn't say anything.
"I was the mascot in the picture." He silently confessed as he tried to hide his face.
So it was him, the poor guy in the mascot that Len possessed on that day to make her happy? But how? Is this some kind of coincidence?
"But at that time, I don't know why I asked you for a date. It's just that I suddenly have these feelings that I should make you smile at that day, it feels like in a short time that I've gotta known you and you're really sad coming at the amusement." Fukase continued. "So I had this, I don't know? Sense of duty? That I should make you smile and forget all your worries for a moment."
He is really confused about explaining those things with her, and Miku understood it very well. He was influenced by Len when he possessed him at that time.
"Thank you." Was all Miku could say it, smiling at him. Finishing the last shot of her iced coffee, Miku stood up decided that she won't be coming to the date of her friends. It seems like they are late too.
"Thank you Fukase, I think I don't want to be a third wheel today. I'm going home."
"Un, see you around. I hope I didn't creep you out." He apologized as he too stood up, escorting her to the doors of the café as he too needs to go in his job.
"No, you didn't. I swear, I owe you a lot besides I haven't thank you enough for all the trouble I made when I have a panic attack―"
"Hey." He cut her, "chill out." He smiled and laughs at her. "I'm just really glad that I was there, nothing I could ask for more."
"I don't know what to say aside from thanking you."
"Hey, Miku! Isn't that Fukase?" Luka said out loud as they approach me.
"It's Fukase," Kaito answered.
"You guys are late!" Miku whined.
"Sorry, we found a little kid lost in the street so we can't just ignore her." Luka apologized.
"Hey, Fukase." Acknowledging him.
"Hey." Fukase greeted back.
"Let's go? The movie is going to start within an hour and there's a long line in the ticket booth." Kaito said. "Want to come with us Fukase?"
"I already made a plan with Hatsune. So I'm calling her off from being a third wheel." He grinned at them as he looped his arm in Miku's arm, going to another direction. "Byee!"
They leave them behind with dumbfounded expression in front of the cafe.
When they were out of their sight, Fukase immediately detached himself from Miku's arm. "That was not a good escape plan but it bought them out." He laughed at it, remembering their reaction.
"I don't mind hanging out with you today." Realizing what she had said, her face flames with a blush. "I mean you had done a lot of things for me today, I don't know how to thank you enough. So I just thought maybe… but I know you're busy so I don't mind at all if you can't."
"Yeah, I can't. I have a shift today at the Matryoshka Land." Inwardly he is disappointed that he has a shift if he is allowed he wanted to hang out with her. "How about this Sunday? Are you free?"
"Sunday?" Hmnn, she doesn't have any plan besides going to the river. "Sunday is alright."
"Then it's a date," Fukase announces it, making Miku blush at the thought. It wasn't a date or anything. "Hey, can I request on the date?"
"Request? What is it?"
"This Sunday, I have a morning shift. By lunch, we will meet at the Matryoshka Land cafeteria. It was a lunch date after all; can you make me a homemade lunch?" He politely asked, with a hopeful pray.
Oh, it's just a lunch date. She smiled at him and accepting his request. With that, they parted ways, Fukase going to his work and Miku heading home.
But before going home, he stopped by at the river. It was still early to come home, time check it was 14:34. Her mother won't be calling her now to go home.
The same small forest, the trees swayed as the wind blows gently and she arrived at the river. No one was there; she couldn't feel any presence at the moment. She sat down in the grass near the edge of the river, looking down in the clear water beneath. Her hazy reflection floats on the surface of the water.
Len wasn't here.
What is she doing here anyway if she couldn't see him anymore? Looking up at the sky, she sighed in defeat. She wanted to see him for the last time, but for what? To say goodbye? The thought of it Miku couldn't stand it.
Saying goodbye to Len, tears will overflow from her eyes. The pain in her heart will only weight her down; this is just too much to accept.
Miku took off her sandal as she walked in the river and stood in the shallow. She took deep breaths as her eyes closed. This is the spot where she saw him starring at her on that fateful day, the day that their world starts to collide.
"Len," she whispered, eyes still closed as she recalls all the memories they created together "Aren't you a little cruel? Or am I cruel to you? I didn't know I was so naive the last time you see me off. I didn't know the way you apologize and said goodbye as usual but… I didn't… know that I won't… be able to see you… again"
Tears stream down in her face again, she cried for the second time of the day. Miku couldn't stop her tears from flowing because she didn't know what to do. Opening her eyes, her sight blurred by tears.
"Hey, if you're here please make my tears stop… I don't know what else to do but cry. I'm such a cruel person Len; I mean it I want to see you and I… I shouldn't cry like this. In a short time we spent together it feels like our world became one, that you're not a spirit and I'm not a human. We became beings that just want our world to bump forever."
Suddenly the wind blows stronger, and she felt cold. Something heavy landed on her, coldness spread in her body.
"Len…?" The cold envelops her whole body, closing her eyes as she welcomes the cold that slowly turns warmer in her body.
The sound of the current passing in her feet, the sound of the trees fluttering above, and the sound of the dancing leave in the branch as if they were whispering something in her ears. She cannot comprehend the words but it feels like they were conveying something to her. All of a sudden she felt light as an air, eyes still closed. And something touch on her cheeks, so gentle yet so familiar.
"Open them." A tiny childish voice said from somewhere.
"No don't!" A high-pitch voice shouted somewhere far away.
"It's your only chance..." said by an elderly in the sides.
"Open, open o-p-e-n!" Someone with a girly voice cheered.
All the voices she heard were talking at the same time to open her eyes or not, her tears were wiped away by something so warm. It feels like she was on the other side but when she finally opened her eyes, her visions were welcomed by the smiling Len whose eyes were glassy from tears and seems they about to fall but held back.
"She can see him!" Said by the tiny childish voice that seems very glad about it.
"She's not supposed to see him!" Replied by the high-pitch voice.
"It's only for a while." The elderly chided in.
"The human will be sad." Said by the girly.
Miku didn't bother the voices that spoke together in different voices, what's important is that Len is in front of her. She wants to jump in his arms and held him but something in her feet stops her from moving.
"Miku." And all of the voices had stopped talking at each other. "It will only be in a while before you realized that you and I can be together again. I already know your answer that's why you need to stop dwelling yourself on me and just be happy in your life."
He reached her two hands, bringing close to his lips. Gently kissing her knuckles and he held it there to hide his face from her.
"I love you Miku, I want nothing but the best of you starting from here."
"But Len how can I―"
"This is goodbye."
Hearts that cannot avoid the pain hit like a thunder, something pulled her down in the shallow that completely makes her wet. The level of the water reaches in her hips, making the ends of her hair soaked too. She could hear the voices laughing at her.
"Listen Miku, both of us will be going to be hurt at each other." Len set his one knee down while the other supports firmly his weight in the shallow reaching Miku's eyes at him. "Human life is too short compare to us, we could live forever. But you…"
"I know very well but this is too sad, for the first time in my life I finally found someone who can make me who I am even though I'm such a mess than in an instant I can be an actress and then when I cry I smile afterward. Did you put a spell on me, Len?"
"You know that I will never do that to you, it was you who put that spell on yourself." Len smiled at her, a smile that holds a lot of sadness. "You're strong Miku, you made this far picking up the pieces of your broken heart and made it whole again. I just happened to pass by and cheered on you. That's all I did."
Miku cried again and Len wiped her tears away, this time he pulled her in his arm. For the last time, she was able to return the embrace that no one was stopping her.
"Remember, one day you'll fall in love with someone and you'll be going to marry him and both of you will have a child. You will be a mother, and your child will grow up and fall in love too, and someday she will be a mother too. I promised you; no matter how many centuries will pass my heart belongs to you and will only beat for you. I love you Miku but this is only goodbye."
Slowly opening her eyes, seeing the trees, hearing the calming sounds of the water, Miku's groggy eyes adjusted in the evening forest. She fell asleep in the riverside. Checking her phone for the time but instead, she saw a notification, one missed call, and a message from her mother. She sighed and stood up.
Her sandal was on her feet, she thought she took it off and Len! Looking around it was still the same. Was it all a dream? Touching her face, looking down at her clothes it's all dry and good. Her eyes were swollen by all the crying, so it wasn't a dream after all.
It was a goodbye, but how will she go to handle the pain in her heart right now? Everything happened is just too much for her.
Once again her phone vibrated, a text message from her mother reminding her that she should be home by now.
With a last glance, Miku starred at the river with eyes that's about to stream some tears again but she already walks away before she could do it. She came home later without announcing that she had just arrived and gone straight to her room and lie down in her bed trying to remember anything else happened in the dream.
It wasn't a dream but it feels like everything happened in a dream. Those memories they created together will forever remain in her heart. It will be the only secret chapter in her whole life because if ever she will tell anyone they wouldn't even believe her. This little chapter will only be her secret journey in picking up the pieces of her first broken heart. It would be something unbelievable, so magical, so special and so very dearest.
Len.
In my next love, at that time I hope I can be happier instead of shedding tears. I hope there will be rainbows and butterflies instead of storms and pains. You'll be there for me, right? No matter how many love will bloom in me and no matter how many heartaches I'm going to face. You will always have a place in my heart.
"Miku, dear wake up." Her mother lightly taps her shoulder, when she opened her eyes it was already morning.
"Dear, someone is in the door and she saw your flowers in the window, begging me to give her some of your healing flowers."
Healing flowers? Just look up to her windowsill, the glass vase stands with the flowers in it. They were about to wilt, thinking of it makes her sad more. Summer will be here soon.
"She said she needs those flowers, even if it's only one. She will buy it in any amount."
"Huh?" Finally registering what her mother had said.
"Her son is in critical condition, haven't woken up from a coma because of the accident. She's still in downstairs, desperate to have at least one flower believing it can heal his son."
"But mom, the flowers are..."
"I can't turn her down, especially since... I don't know? I'm not good at it, besides she badly needs it for the life of his son..." sadly her mother said. "I don't know if those flowers can heal her son, but looking at her right now. As a mother, if anything happened to you, all kinds of medicine, herbal plants, lucky charms, and amulet I will buy it just to save your life."
"I understand mom, please tell her to wait."
Her mother brightened up and hugs her daughter, "Thank you, dear, we don't know if the belief of those flowers was true but it could make the hope of the lady gets stronger for having the faith of waking her son soon."
Miku took a while to go down because she needs to look presentable in front of a sudden visitor, bringing down with her the flower vase with all the flowers in it. Well not actually all, she left behind the only color, the bluish one.
"Oh my dear, thank you, thank you!" The lady suddenly cried because of relief.
"Uh... no need to cry ma'am err..." looking at her mother for help, the lady looks so very tired and sluggish, and with her crying it makes it worst.
"Thank you, thank you so much."
"Would you like to stay for a while?" Her mother offered kindly to the lady.
"I need to get back at the hospital, how much are these flowers all?" The lady stops weeping, opening her shoulder bag to get the wallet.
"No need! I mean they are about to wilt so I don't know if it will be in any help or anything..."
"These flowers are real I can feel it, thank you so much, dear. I even disturbed your morning already, so how can I pay you?"
Miku looked back again to her mother, and this time she spoke up.
"It's alright, no need to pay for it besides you need the money because of the expenses you need at the hospital. For now, what we want is to wait for the good news of your son, that's all."
"Thank you so much." And the lady seems to calm down, "I'm sorry for the early commotion I have caused, I will gladly let you know the situation about my son after this."
And with that the lady finally went out, going back to the hospital. Miku sat down at the couch while her mother is in the kitchen.
Starring at the space, so much had happened this morning. The only remaining memories of Len were already gone too, except the single one she left behind at her study desk. It seems as it would completely wilt now it's the only one left, the flower will be lonely too. Just like her,
"Aren't you going out today?" Her mother asked from the kitchen.
"I only have one class today, so maybe I'll just skip it and stay here."
"Are you alright? Giving away all the flowers even the base?"
Is it alright to just give it away? Besides, they are about to wilt and those flowers really helped her a lot going through with her broken heart but now everything is back to the way it used to be. She finally accepted heartedly about the relationship between Luka and Kaito, even though both didn't know of her feelings because she kept it on her own. But one thing she'll never going to forget.
Meeting with Len, it wasn't fate that brought them together because it was so unexpected that no one could have seen in it. It was only a coincidence that he stopped by fixing her broken heart and then in an instant he was gone. Just like a bubble.
It seems like her tears have dried too, the stinging pain feels like a bite of an ant you'll just have to scratch it and the pain will be gone and it didn't hurt anymore.
The single flower she left behind may wilt and rotten but the memories will remain forever in her heart. She knows that Len was still there, waiting in that river until she can see him again.
"Mom, do you know how to make a bookmark?"
Miku will treasure it, every memory of him. That bluish afterglow flower, those pictures with him the pink bunny mascot and that picture of his back. Everything that will remind of him. During the season with him, even if her heart is in pieces chasing those tears with him is so precious. She might not stay the way she was before but she will do her best from here, even if the distance makes it hard to make it clear.
Because at the end of it, we just wanted to be happier.
"And mom what can you suggest for the food of a lunch date?"
